we start with breaking news tonight.... emergency responders have the busy intersection of charleston and maryland parkway shut down tonight after a very serious crash. i'm christine maddela. i'm john huck. police and fire crews were called to the scene shortly after 7 .. fox 5s cyndi lundberg is live at the scene to show us what happened. this crash happenned just after seven. if you look behind me there's a red car that's crumpled around a pole i'm told that car hit the silver car. witnesses told me a man was driving the red car.. a woman was in the passenger seat. the driver was conscious when he was put in the ambulance... the woman was not. we spoke to a different person who told us down the street... she was also hit by

" right now we don't know who was in the silver car that was also involved here or what their condition is... we're waiting for more information from police and we hope to have an update at 1030... reporting live cl

today johnson junior high school students didn't report to class again as decontamination crews trie make sure the building is mercury-free... but a few dozen students and their parents did show up to school to drop off bags of clothes, shoes... anything that could have been contaminated. this is day three of the school saga. you may remember on wednesday, hazmat crews locked down the school to screen each student for mercury contamination. the last of the students were released around five a-m thursday morning. fox5's miguel martinez valle has been listening to parents frustrations and asking school
10:03 pm
they're doing to keep kids safe. one of the biggest questions we're still trying to answer: when were kids first exposed to the mercury? some parents say their kids played with mercury last friday, others tuesday... crews didn't start decontaminating the school until wednesday. if exposed students went home with contaminated shoes and clothing... that could potentially spread the contamination to their homes... " what about my house, i have two little kids who were also contaminated, when am i going to find it out? " tania babajan's son is one of nine kids exposed to the mercury. she's now worried the rest of her family could get sick. " all of us actually these two- three days, we kinda feel dizzy, and i thought maybe it was because of the fear... im shaking, i have my little one, and i dont know what to do" " so what you do is you contact the school, they will take your informaiton, they will make contact with the epa" " we are reaching out to those parents who are still upset, we are making those phone calls
10:04 pm
asked to put anything they thought contaminated in a plastic bag" " and then take that to the school for testing" " some joggers, a shirt" more than 45 families did just that... " i'm here to get my shoes tested to see if there was any mercury residue on them" " i believe i took my shoes on friday, which is the day they thought the mercury was there" " the clothes that i was wearing the day before the hazmat lockdown. i just wanted to make sure they didnt have mercury on it" " - howd it go? : good -they weren't contaminated? : no - thats good" didn't want to track mercury everywhere" but the evironmental protection agency kept 10 bags with students' stuff that tested positive for mercury. one of those bags belonged to babajan's son. now the e-p-a will have to check their home... i talked to the babajans today. they told me the epa is heading to their house tomorrow to test for mercury contamination.
10:05 pm
you think may be contaminated, you can still drop off bags at johnson middle school this weekend. nevada is no stranger to mercury exposure... back in 2003-- a spill at a "pau-wa- lu middle school." in gardnerville was a major event. "three young men bring dental mercury to school on a school bus and then scatter the mercury through 4 classrooms. by doing that, they contaminated the classrooms and they contaminated a 45 passenger school
10:06 pm
the epa says a total of 61 kids came in four classrooms came in direct contact with the mercury. floors had to be ripped up in classrooms, desks were thrown out .. students lost cliothes, shoes, purses and backpacks. a custodian at the school mistakenly poured the mercury down the sink. that required them to rip up the entire bathroom to replace the pipes. the school was closed for four days, and it cost 100 thousand dollars to clean after months of debate.... lawmakers unanimously vote to reorganize the clark county school district. under the plan--- the power will be taken away from the district and given to the individual schools. each school will set up a volunteer board-- made up of teachers, parents, staff and students. that board will hold meetings and decide on the school's budget. "hopefully the parents will notice the openness that schools will be
10:07 pm
they're getting involved and getting engaged in their child's work. they dont have to be an organizational team member to be engaged in their child's school" " the district will decide how much each school gets based on how many students there are at the school. the plan will be implemented by the 2017 school year to stay up to date on all of the developments with the district's reorganization... be sure to download our fox5 mobile app... tonight a school continues to mourn the loss and celebrate the life of al otremba... more than five years after her brutal death.... the - then - arbor view high school sophomore was kidnapped while walking to a friends house...raped.. tortured..and murdered by javier righetti back in 2011.... fox-5's vince sapienza was at tonights arbor view football game.. and spoke with members of the family.... he's in the newsroom with more on this story... john..christine... i spoke with alyssa's mom.. jennifer...who says it was a tough day.... but not as

"her life can continue to touch other lives and i miss that face, i see it every single day, i know she is with us, i feel her presents." "i think having a football game like this dedicated to her and honoring her is more of a sense of community, bringing us together to remember we're here for each other." in a sea of red. the one thing that stuck out the most...were these neon green

alyssa's favorite color was green. and every member of the band wore one in her memory. "it was just sort of an extension of her. an extension of our family here sister was also in band, it's comforting." more than five years ago alyssa otremba stayed home from school sick. that night she walked over to a friends house to borrow a text book. she didn't return home. she was kidnapped by javier righetti. she was raped..stabbed 80 times and her body was later burned. "a lot of people say it's being in the wrong place at the wrong time, and it's not, she had every right being where she was." "the best way i can describe my life is it's groundhogs day and like the movie, you wake up and it's the same thing over and over and you can't wake up from the nightmare." inside the arbor view band room is a picture of alyssa and a neon green bear. the school also gives out an

acted more like adults than many of their parents did after the situation was discovered. the school did what they needed to do to protect the children. you can bet there would have been criticism of the school and possible lawsuits if they had done anything different. parents these days tend to blame the schools for not properly raising their children for them. voicemails!! what a joke. what a waste of time for the parents. every question that we had that was valid they didn't want to answer. and guess what? none of the school administration was here. so the people that supposedly care about our kids and want to keep them safe day in and day out, why were they not here to answer any questions? why'd they leave it up to the clark county school district police department and the epa? i want to hear from the principal, the vice principal. they were nowhere to be found. tim says... every florescent bulb in that school contains 1-3 grams of mercury. the epa comes in throwing their weight around, telling parents they can't take their kids home. typical overreaction. one more reason to disband the epa and start over. these government agencies are so overgrown and have too much power. i would have gotten a group of 20 of the parents and marched in and grabbed my kid and gone home, end of story. what are they gonna do, shoot us? we have a caller! i'm just wondering why there's such an uproar about that mercury deal. back in the 40's in grade school, we had a lot of it. we used to throw it in the hallways and down the street. play with it and
