lot of cheering and excitement some people were reluctant about the lack of profit sharing. but the sands corp isnt budging they told me the return on this project is minimal to begin with. other perks of this project..it'll be home to unlv's football team and itll create thousands of jobs in the process so a lot of excitement as we enter the next stage. right now its unclear when the special session will start - but develoeprs are eager to get this going so that they can pitch a deal to the nfl and get the ball rolling on a possible team relocation vote. a major step in bringing the raiders to las vegas... but the process is not over yet. we'll go back to work" " that work will take place at a special legislative session... if governor brian sandoval decides to call one to discuss the stadium plan. the governor sent a statement to fox5 earlier today, saying he still has some questions, and he will move forward once his questions are resolved. governor sandoval says, sandoval says, quote "nevada has served as the standard bearer for global tourism, gaming, and conventions for decades. in order to remain the top destin must explore potential opportunities and push forward to lead this international industry into the next generation of travel and tourism." we'll have more on that process and some of the obstacles coming up at 5.

unlv held its state of the university address today.... highlighting some of the excitement on the way like the presidential debate. and the university president also brought up "hey reb"... and the changes coming to the mascot. fox5's christine maddela joins us live in the newsroom... u-n-l-v president dr len jessup started off talking about change. he said some people fear change, but he thrives on it, and thinks change is important for individuals and he then talked about the many changes coming to u-n-l-v. personnel changes, and more visibly- a change to the athletic logo. "hey reb" has been a source of contention for some students and community members. some feel the mascot looks too much like a confederate soldier... even though hey reb was designed to be a mountain man. the school has seen some protests... even senator harry reid mentioned the mascot should get another look. unlv has conducted some studies, and found most students do

offfensive. butnow the school is budgeting 50 thousand dollars for a consultant to give hey reb a makeover. launched committee how to update or refresh univ's logo, we're not getting rid of the moniker rebel, but every 10 years, the univ has refreshed the logo and it's been about a decade, time to do a refresh. we have a good committee both on campus and off to do that in the next couple of days most recently, unlv's student newspaper announced it would change its name from "rebel announced it would change its name from "rebel yell" into something more politically correct, so as to not offend students. dr jessup's state of the university address is just wrapping up. we're talking to students and staff at u-n-l-v about the logo change and will have more tonight at 10. dr jessup also said he's planning to take advantage of the spotlight on unlv this

program "every fifteen minutes" visited the school today. metro goes to high schools all over the valley to recreate a crash scene-- using the students as the victims. the kids watch as the crash unfolds. metro makes it as real as possible to make sure the message sticks with them. "their injuries are critical. one of them actually caused this scene. another one is injured and had to be cut out of the car. the other one was dead at the that we want these kids to realize is that it happens. it does happen to my peers, it's not always someone else's problem." the idea is based off a statistic from 19-80 that says-- every fifteen minutes... someone is killed by a drunk driver. "every fifteen minutes" visits about 4 high school every year. metro is investigating a fight, that ended with several people being hit with pepper spray. it happened this morning-- at around nine a-m... inside the lobby of the alexis park resort.

people got into an argument and at one point... someone used pepper spray! the fire department was called for medical aid. twelve people were treated but none of them required a trip to the hospital. police believe the fight may be related to a vehicle theft. police are looking for a man they say has robbed at least seven local busnesses. take a look at this video... this robbery happened near rainbow and charleston this month. police say the man gave an employee a demand note, and got away with some cash. the suspect is about 40 to 50 years old. police did not say what kind of business targets. if you have information that can help police, call crimestoppers at 702-385-55-55. a group of soldiers in an accoustic band can play pretty much whatever you ask. and today, they took over fox5! fox5 is at that concert for veterans this afternoon. we will show you some of the highlights tonight at 10. a follow up now to a story we have been covering since january. the wife of a retired metro police officer continues to make progress... after suffering a traumatic brain injury. sergeant john sheahan joined us today on fox5 news this morning to give an update on his wife kristi. you may remember him as the face of our "behind the badge" segments before he retired. his wife became seriously ill in january... and doctors were not sure if she would survive. sergeant sheahan says his family got through this difficult time thanks to the support of the metro police department. "when this stuff happens, metro really comes together as a family. i was retired

police employees assistance program kicked in and helped out, police department really came together and found out what we needed. my daughter that lives in minnesota, we flew her down here and she was met by someone from metro who took her to the hospital. second half of fox5 news at 4. here are some of your national headlines. the family of a texas woman whose death in police custody sparked national outrage... has settled their wrongful death lawsuit. sandra bland's family will receive one-point-nine million dollars, in compensation for her death. you may remember, bland was arrested last year during a trffic stop. three days later, she was found dead in her jail cell, and her death was ruled a suicide. the trooper who arrested bland was fired after he was indicted for alledgedly lying about the circumstances surrounding bland's death. several changes were also made to waller county's jail procedures. it's back to the campaign trail for hillary clinton. the democratic nominee for president says she is feeling better, after being diagnosed with pneumonia. there have been several reports of samsung's note-seven's battery exploding... incuding a case here in the valley. today... the government officially issued a recall. samsung recalled the phones on its own a few weeks ago. the consumer product safety commission is now warning people the battery can overheat and catch fire. the agency also says there are 92 reports of this happening in the u-s. this includes 26 cases of people getting burned... and 55 reports of property like cars and garages burning. samsung will start replacing the note-seven on september 19th. this situation just stinks for one rhode island couple. their picturesque farm wedding was ruined... because a neighbor dumped a huge pile of manure just yards away from the ceremony! michelle san miguel shows us what the bride's furious parents plan to do about it. as if dealing with the smell of manure on your wedding day isn't bad enough

is launched by china. could it be the first step in a mission to the moon - or even mars? a florida feline earned the nickname "zombie cat", after climbing out of his own grave. he now has a new forever home, but it didn't come without some fights. adam winer shows us how a community rallied around this little survivor. you can barely tell what bart the cat went through from just from looking at him today. (sherry silk/humane cat had a spirit like no other and he was determined to live." this was bart in 2015-- hit by a car, he was presumed dead, and buried. 5 days later ... bart clawed out of his grave -- earning the nickname, "zombie cat." (sherry silk/humane society ceo) "it was touch and go. he almost died. the first couple weeks the vets were giving him a 50-50 chance that he would make it." bart was on a feeding tube for 7 weeks and he lost an eye. between the surgery and the intensive care, the humane society spent just under 11-thousand dollars to keep bart alive.
