some accidents this afternoon. kwwl's jessica hartman has been out on local roads today. she joins us live with the details. jessica? well mac -- it really depends where you're driving. because conditions are different throughout the state. slick and snow packed roads causing a roll over accident on its top in a deep ditch. emergency crews took at least one person to the hospital. and here is a look highway 2-18 in waterloo - - roads are wet but not snow packed. traffic is flowing at normal speeds a long there. a different story in the residential areas. this is the six corners ago. cars taking it slow and being cautious of the many directions of traffic through the snow packed intersection. cedar fall reporting 13 accidents and waterloo's total is currently around 35. we've got you covered live in waterloo...jessica hartman kwwl news. as holiday travel gains momentum

we will continue to brin gyou updates on road conditions. meanwhile -- storm damage is reported in linn county -- tied to storms we were tracking last night. this video was recorded in hiawatha. as you can see -- the wind snapped multiple trees in the area. the wind didn't only damage trees. the owner of twisters gymnastics in hiawatha reports thousands of dollars in damage from last night's storm. kwwl's kristen rogers joins us live from the gym. kristen? that's right he said it all happened very quickly. i saw some of the damage for myself and it's hard to believe the amount of damage that can be caused in such a short amount of time. strong winds blew heating units from the roof down to the concrete. the gym's owner says each of the

thunderstorms expected through the christmas holiday. sarah dallof, nbc news mississippi's governor phil bryant is declaring a state of another round of layoffs is coming to an eastern iowa farm equipment company. unverferth manufacturing company in shell rock say workers were told about the layoffs earlier this month. the company won't say how many workers will be losing their jobs. the layoffs take effect on january fourth. experts say a down turn in the agriculutre economy is to blame. a university of iowa student will be the first woman in iowa to enlist as a national guard combat engineer. 20-year megan reaska is a sophomore at the university of iowa. she enlisted on december 21st and will be the third woman to join an iowa national guard combat arms unit.

during the holiday. the french and british embassies are warning their citizens -- as well of possible threats against westerers in the busy and popular shopping district. beijing police are increasing their presence at shopping centers in the area as well. the mbassies are urging for extra vigilance. a person is shot and killed by a police officer in a mall this christmas eve. it happened in charlotte north carolina. details are scarce at this point -- but investigators say an argument broke out in the crowded shopping mall this afternoon. they say the person who was killed by police was armed as well. no other injuries were reported. dozens of protesters gathering on michigan avenue in chicago -- which is already crowded

these protests arethe latest in a series of demonstrations in the city -- since video was released showing a white police officer shooting a black teenager 16 times. a similar protest was held in the area on black friday. many of the protesters are holding signs that read rahm resign aimed at the city's mayor. yesterday's black lives matter protest was a decoy -- to defer police attention from a different demonstration. the mall of america was used as a deocy location to start a protest at the minneapolis saint paul international airport -- to block a terminal on a busy holiday travel day. the protest did cause some delays on the busy travel day -- but didn't result in any cancellations. a total of 15 activists were arrested at the mall of america and the airport. the governor of california gives a gift to robert downey, junior -- by pardoning his 20 year old drug conviction. downey was among 91 people pardoned. the oscar- nominated actor

national retail federation released a report saying 90 percent of americans still needed to buy gifts. while we're seeing snow -- places like new york have forecasted temperatures warmer than on the 4th of july. i can't believe it's christmas eve, it's too warm. today is the warmest christmas eve on record in history... it's a christmas for short sleeves and t-shirts. a meteorologist from new york city tweeted today's forecasted high is 76 degrees -- which is one degree higher than the high temperature from independence day. look to the skies overnight -- and you'll see the first christmas full moon since 19-77. nasa sys the last full moon of the year should peak just after six o'clock tomorrow morning. a full christmas moon won't happen again for another 19 years. with the bright sky -- santa won't soley need rudolph to guide his sleigh. if you have pet --there are some hidden holiday dangers you should be aware of. pet poison hotlines experience a spike on holidays -- partially for dogs

experts also say artificial sweeteners in some holiday treets can be deadly to dogs. veterinarians remind pet owners to make sure foods are out of reach for pets -- to keep them safe. the u-s department of agriculture is waiving the fee santa would face for bringing his reindeer into the u-s. the permit gives all nine reindeer the okay to enter and exit the united states -- but it must be done between six tonight and six tomorrow morning. the u-s-d-a's chief veterinary officer says the department wants to do everything in its power to help santa make his deliveries. meanwhile -- a team of people are busy tracking santa's every move this christmas eve. the north american aerospace defense command has a group of people tracking santa during his magical journey -- and they've had eyes on the sky tracking saint nick for the last 60 years. these trackers are watching his every move and answering questions from kids. to track santa's journey online. -- you can visit our website at kwwl dot com.
