7:00 am
takes over the mike during an acceptance speech. before literally getting the boot from sharon osborne today thursday, january 7th, 2016. >> announcer: from nbc news, this is "today" with matt lauer and savannah guthrie leave from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. and good morning, everybody. welcome to today on a thursday morning. if you call it powerball fever when the jackpot is 450 million, what are you going to do saturday? >> you're going to explode. spontaneous human combustion. >> i can barely do the math. >> it's getting interesting. let's get to the top story. a race to free a group of miners who have been trapped for hours more than 70 stories below
7:01 am
tom costello is following the developments. tom, good morning. >> they have brought in a giant crane to help free 17 miners who have been trapped y'all night below the cayuga salt mooin 50 miles south of syracuse, new york. we're told they've managed to get several of the miners out. they're lowering the basket and lifting them out two or three at a time. they became trapped at about 10:20 last night when they were headed down to the mine floor about 2,300 feet below ground to begin their overnight shift. despite overnight temps in the teens the at the surface of the mine, the mine operator cargo says none of the trapped miners is injured and rescue workers have been able to lower down water, heat packs, and blankets to keep them all warm. unclear how long this operation might take to lift all of them out, but, again, we're hearing some of them already up. sash na,
7:02 am
>> tom costello, thank you. bad news for those waking up hoping to be a powerball winner. there were no winners. saturday night. ite e going to get crazy good on saturday. nbc's kerry sanders is back on powerball watch again. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. if you're waking up this morning and you have go to work and you're sort of sad, this may cheer you up. take a look alt how much larger the jackpot is when they do the pull on saturday. $675 million. so before you take your tqckets and rip them up because you lost, just take a look at the numbers that were pulled last night. so this would have been a record jackpot at $550 million. it would have been the fourth largest jackpot. there was at least one winner, somebody who got a million on their ticket in the houston area.
7:03 am
the powerball numbers are -- so no winners there. the ticket-buying frenzy, as you said, will get even crazier. at one point yesterday when the ticket value of the jackpot was going to be going to be $550 million, they were selling more than 1,300 tickets a second. so a tremendous number of tickets being sold at $675 million. consider this, guys. that is more than the budgets of some tiny nations. that's a lot of money. >> it's well put, kerry. it's a lot of money. thank you very much. let's do politics now. donald trump is escalating his attacks on ted cruz reillterateingreiterating.
7:04 am
it's worth looking into. peter alexander. peter, good morning to you. he praised him on twitter for announcing his canadian citizen ship 18 months ago but cruz is pushing back accusing trump of simply trying to detract from the real issues in the race by making political noise. >> are you ready? america's birther in chief donald trump trialing to fuel doubts whether ted cruz born in canada is eligible to run for president in the u.s. >> how do you run against a democrat and you have this hanging over your head if they bring a lawsuit? >> cruz has repeatedly dismissed trump's concerns. >> the constitutional laws are straightforward. the very first congress defined the child of a citizen born abrod is a naturalized citizen. >> and then john mccain. >> he's a war hero because he
7:05 am
>> the party's 2008 party born in the panama canal zone. >> they think there's a question. i'm not a constitutional scholar on that, but i think it's worth looking into. >> while trump dominates nationally, a former republican party chairman tells nbc news right now the hawkeye state cruz is set to lose. this provocative news ad just hit the air. >> the politics of it would be very, very different if a bunch of lawyers or bankers were crossing the rio brand. we will build a wall that works. we will secure the border. >> now he's taking my idea for a wall. i'll build a wall.
7:06 am
reminding people of boots on the ground. carly fiorina kaling them out, yeah, but can you rock these? >> speaks of shoes, thousands of trump supporters may be left cooling their heels tonight. his next rally is next to the home of bernie sanders. they were serious about overticketing. hear this. the campaign issued about 20,000 tickets to a 1,400-seat venue. the residents being warned to expect overflow demonstrations in the streets. matt and savannah? >> all right. peter alexander, thank you. one man who didn't get into the presidential race, vice president joe biden and now he's decision. c senior white house white house correspondent chris jansing has hi, chris. good morning. >> hi, matt. seldom more poignantly than late yesterday. more than two months after he stood here in the rose garden,
7:07 am
announce he would not run for president, bind says candidly he wishes things were different. >> sure, i regret it every day, but i think it's the right decision for my family and for me and i plan on staying deeply involved. we've got two good candidates. >> that decision was made with his head, not his heart following the death of his son beau. he concluded it was simply too late to mount a serious challenge against hillary clinton and bernie sanders. at 73 this,, this would have been his last shot at his lifelong dream. he says now, it's what i expected. matt, savannah? >> chris, thank you very much. speaking of president obama, he's giving us a rare sneak preview of what we can expect to hear during his final state of theionion address next tuesday. >> what i want to focus on this tuesday in the state of theionion address, not just the
7:08 am
just what i want to get done in the year ahead, but what we all need to do together in the years to come, the big things that will guarantee an even stronger, for our kids. >> presidential aides have described the upcoming speech as nontraditional taking a big approach to the challenges facing our country, and we'll talk to the country about that address and other issues facing him in his final years in office when we take the entire show to the office next tuesday. by the way, vice president joe biden is also going to join us live. another hot button issue in washington on the campaign trail and internationally, north korea's claim of a successful hydrogen bomb test. it has reig nated concerns about that nation's military advances. nbc's chief foreign affairs correspondent andrea mitchell is following this story again for us. andrea, good morning. >> good morning, savannah i.
7:09 am
though the white house highly doubts it tested a hydrogen bomb. even though he could be bluffing it's clear there's no stopping the unpredictable leader. >> he's young, untested, and has his finger on the nuclear bomb. commander of a million-man army, missiles and nuclear arsenals for the fourth time testing a hydrogen bomb. >> we have this man mand man over there who probably wows use it. >> he's a lunatic and dangerous and this administration has done nothing about it. >> this underscores the gravity of the threats we're facing right now and also the sheer folly of the obama/clinton foreign policy. >> reporter: was it an intelligence failure? u.s. spies spotted it but no specific warning of the timing
7:10 am
north korea even blind-sided china, it's closest ally. >> what's important is not only that china take action but the world take action. >> has the u.s. put pressure on china? >> we put considerable pressure on china. it's clear they need more. >> they have 28,500. 54,000 in the region. including the uss ronald reagan. experts say he is still trying constantly to build the most modern survivable and lethal nuclear weapons force he can. savannah? >> all right. andrea mitchell, thank you very much. we have breaking news in paris. an incident at a police station involving a man with a knife and it's being investigated as
7:11 am
let's go right to kelly cobiella. what are you hearing thb? >> good morning, savannah. it happened a couple of hours in northern paris at a police station. you'll remember the anniversary of "charlie hebdo" and there were commemorations happening in relation to that anniversary. what we understand and a lot of this is understand confirmed aet this point. man with a knife entered this police station in northern paris. there are unconfirmed reports that there were wires extending from his clothing and that he may have had some sort of suicide belt on and also unconfirmed reports by nbc news that he shouted before brandishing this knife. again, a lot of this still coming in, still developing. he was shot and killed at that police station in, and that northern neighborhood in paris has been logged down and investigated. again, a lot of details wlb or not there was a suicide vest or whether or not this was a
