as candidates clamour for support in iowa where the latest poll shows a dead heat between trump and cruz. cruz today cautioned voters that trump is quote "no ronald reagan"... as the real estate mogul, courting evangelical votes in a speech at liberty university, while, at the same time, across the atlantic, (nats) the first petition has commons actually debated banning the republican frontrunner from the united kingdom... due to "hate speech" - referring to trump's calls for a travel ban on muslims entering the united states. with just a fortnight to campaign trail will likely get - or if - it gets better. in washington, i'm dianne gallagher. and we will of course have full coverage of the iowa caucuses right here on kwwl and on our website

for the third time this year -- an iowa basketball team knocks off a number one. uni upset north carolina --- iowa knocked off michigan state -- and tonight it was iowa state's turn. kwwl's mark woodley joins us now to talk about the cyclones big win over oklahoma. yeah ron -- the state of iowa appears to be the place where giants go to die -- but as far as vegas is concerned -- this was not an upset -- the cyclones actually came in as a two point favorite -- what a finish to this one -- cyclones up three -- but oklahoma's isaiah cousins -- from the arc -- puts it home to tie the game at 75 apiece -- cyclones next possession -- monte morris -- clutch on the jumper -- cyclones back up 2 -- 21 seconds left -- they hit their free throws -- and the cyclones got it done --

moved back to 5- hundred in big 12 play with their first win over a number one team in 59 years -- we'll have more from the big cyclone win coming up later in sports -- it's been months since a vital bridge in eastern iowa has seen traffic...it's been closed because of structural problems. tonight, people living in waverly were given an opportunity to weigh in on the green bridge...which has become a costly problem for the city. kwwl's jessica hartman talking with community members who say not having the 3rd street bridge is a problem. that's right. its caused all traffic to be diverted to the only other bridge into the business district and children on the

100 years now in disrepair. shirley crawford "in five half mile out around to get where you are going. it just seems they could do something to patch it up." its now the talk of the town - is it worth saving or do thousand in repairs lasting 5 years to 16 million for a new bridge. engineer "well it would be wise financially and long term solution to build a new bridge, but i didn't grow up in this community. i don't see the bridge as an icon, to me personally. so for those that feel that way, its an improtant part of waverly. for some the memories don't out wiegh the costs and

the city council reviewed the options tonight and will now gather public input over the next week. a local police officer is seriously injured after being punched by a resident.. it happened at soapy waters laundromat in cedar rapids. 33-year-old nathan brocks faces multiple charges in the assault. police were responding to a domestic disturbance call at the laundromat sunday afternoon.. they say the officer was speaking with brocks when he punched him -- knocking him unconcious. he fell and hit his head on a cement parking barrier. you can hear some of the incident on the police scanner audio... "i'm out at soapy waters." (man screams) "215 can you start to soapy waters?" "code 2 ambulance for an officer." other officers tased brocks before taking him into custody, because they say he fought back.

this time. a community is rallying around local business owners after a large fire destroys their restaurant. here's video from the weekend fire that burned down "back home country cookin" in strawberry point. it took three departments more than two hours to contain it. here's a look at the aftermath. the restaurant has been in business for about seven years one of the owners spent about 30 years in the restaurant business in florida -- but decided to come back to her hometown and part of their town "back home is such an intricate part of our lives, and you dont think about that until it's gone other and the community and brenda and her family" meanwhile -- fire crews still aren't sure what caused the fire one firefighter is injured after a fire at a storage center in

take a look at the fire here at the goodyear tire storage in fort dodge. crews had a hard time putting out the fire due to tires and propane tanks inside the building. another building next to it also caught fire -- but the amount of damage is not known. luckily --crews say the firefighter's injuries were minor. new at ten--bone chilling temperatures affecting a number of businesses across eastern iowa. sundown mountain in dubuque certainly not immune to wind chills in the negative. in fact, they had to close early sunday night because the temps dipped so low. kwwl's brad hanson joins us live now from sundown mountain in dubuque. and brad, this is yet another challenge in what has already you might recall, warmer temperatures actually forced sundown to open about a month later than usual. and after a good stretch, the

challenges for the staff here. the temps may have spiked at only four degrees, but still no shortage of skiiers and snowboarders at sundown mountain in dubuque. despite the steady flow on the slopes, chilly weather has caused some issues here. "this year's certainly been challenging." among those challenges--having to close early because of dipping temps. (mark gordon, sundown mountain general manager) "we had pretty decent number of people on the hill, but around 6 o clock, we saw the temperatures were getting below what we wanted them to be, so we early, and everybody understood." and that hasn't kept people away.
