>> from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia, this is cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> a shocking crime in one of the safest sectioning of philadelphia. police are vesting a sexual assault in rittenhouse square and officers say the victim was followed home. now, the woman a doctor at the hospital of the university of pennsylvania says she was forced into her home and raped. good evening everyone, i'm natasha brown. thanks for joining us.

"eyewitness news" reporter matt o'donnell rivers is tracking the latest on this investigation. he's joining us live from rittenhouse square with more. matt. >> reporter: natasha, police detectives were on scene here along the 1900 block of spruce street for the majority of the day trying to figure out who this suspect is while telling the public to keep an eye out. the suspect remains at large tonight with police describing him as a 5-foot seven hispanic male wearing a black t-shirt and blue jeans. police said he followed the victim home to her apartment on the 1900 block of spruce street around 12:30 saturday morning after she left a nearby bar. ah when she got home he came up behind her grabbed her neck and forced her to hope the door. once inside the victim was sexually assaulted. the suspect then left and the victim called police. neighbors who live nearby were surprised to hear the news. >> seems very safe, like that's why i'm surprised it happened here. you don't expect nothing like this to happen in rittenhouse. >> reporter: what went through your mind. >> like it's not safe to walk

around by myself necessarily after coming home from the bar because you feel safe in this area but always got to be aware that you may not be. >> reporter: and police did say there are surveillance cameras in the area. they'll be looking through that video to see what, if anything, they can find out about this suspect. we're live near rittenhouse square, matt rivers, cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> all right, matt, thank you so much. also police in new castle county, delaware, have charged 20 year old james daniels with rape robbery and possession of a deadly weapon. he's accused of punching a woman and forcing her into a car where he allegedly sexually assaulted her and hit her with a baseball bat. police say he drove off with her belongings. he remains jailed unable to post bail. police are looking for man who robbed three businesses in southwest philadelphia in six days. in each of these cases the suspect enters alone, talks to a worker and then suddenly pulls a gun from highs right hip and demands money. this video from the 56 street food market thursday

afternoon. now no one has been hurt so far but officers do want him off the streets as soon as possible before he becomes more aggressive. and police are also investigating a deadly stabbing in philadelphia's hunting park named officers say just before 4:00 a 37-year-old man was stabbed in the chest on the front parch will porch of a home on the 1300 block of erie avenue. he was pronounced dead at the hospital. police say the suspect took off down erie avenue. if you have any information, please contact police right away. and a shooting in the northeast, it leaves a man dead. it happened just before 2:00 this morning at colgate and rosalie streets in lawncrest. the victim, a plan in his 20's was pronounced dead at the scene. eyewitnesses reported seeing two black males in hoodies running from the scene. the victim's name has not been released. a kensington man is in critical but stable condition today after being shot outside of a chinese food store. the 23-year-old told police

that he was sitting on the step when he felt a sharp pain and realized he had been shot in the groin area. police on the 2600 block of lehigh avenue just after 11 this morning. there's no word yet on who fired that shot. and summer is officially here everyone and along lincoln drive plenty of folks were celebrating with a lovely leisurely walk today but will the nice weather stick around? we can only hope so. meteorologist justin drabick joins us now from the cbs3 sky deck with a check on that first forecast. hey, justin. >> hi, natasha. that's right, summer official arrived at 6:51 this morning but not really feeling like summer today, more like springtime. temperatures only in 70's. we have some cloud cover still hanging across parts of the delaware valley but check out the high temperature. only made it up to 79. the average high, 84 degrees and our record high 99 set back in 1923. so, again, another weekend with very pleasant conditions and low humidity. now, the summer solstice

officially arrived this morning. that's when the sun reaches its farthest point north in the northern hemisphere. gives us the longest amount of day. tonight sunset 8:33 in the evening. by late august talking about sunset an hour earlier. days get a little shorter now through the rest of summer. today obviously the longest amount of daylight, just over 15 hours here in philadelphia. a couple of spotty light showers moving off the coast in southern new jersey, clearing skies to our north. so this will set up for a quiet night an nice finish to their week. upper 70's to around 80 degrees for the warmest temperatures this evening. very pleasant with low humidity hanging onto 80 degrees this hour northeast philadelphia. so, here we go. rest of the region plenty of sunshine, mid 80's for philadelphia. we're warming it up. upper 70's at the shore. very pleasant in the poconos, low humidity with highs in the mid 70's. we'll talk about when that summer weather returns in the seven day forecast in a few minutes. natasha. >> justin thanks so much. tonight we are now learning the identity of the victim in yesterday's deadly

collapse in cherry hill, new jersey. officials say 38-year-old jose ortega of camden was killed during demolition of an old blockbuster video store on route 38 in cherry hill. camden county investigators are still looking into how the collapse happened but preliminary reports indicate it was accidental. and a house fire in oxford circle, it sends one person to the hospital. firefighters were called to the 700 block of rutland street just after 1 o'clock this morning. they had the fire under control in about 20 minutes. the victim's condition is not being released just yet. the red cross was called in and provided food and clothing to five people who lived there. the cause of this blaze was not immediately known. and now to the crisis in iraq where two more cities and a key border post have been seized by islamic militants. cbs correspondent are wendy gillette shows us how iraqi soldiers are now trying to show their strength reporter: thousands of heavily armed shiite soldiers displayed

their military mite marching through the streets of baghdad and other cities, they're loyal to radical anti-american cleric al sad dover. two more cities have fall thrown extremist. on friday the islamic state of iraq and syria or isis can easily move rebels back and forth from syria to iraq. on saturday, isis overtook another town along the euphrates river about 175 miles from baghdad. the seconds area in the largely sunni anbar province to fall under its control. [speaking foreign language] >> interpret. this man ran to kirkuk. he says we have lived with sunnies and there have never been any problems. where these people came from we don't know. there's a shortage of medicine in kirkuk. many burn tires and trash to protest a gasoline shortage in kurdish north iraq. an estimated 300,000 refugees

have poured into the region recent days. there's mounting pressure on prime minister nor preal maliki to build a unity government and win back the trust of the iraqi people. wendy gillette for cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> of course stay with "eyewitness news" for the latest on the crisis in iraq. we'll bring you updates here on television and online at cbsphilly.com. and officials are pointing to the crisis in iraq for rising gas prices. in new jersey, prices have already jumped for nine straight days after falling for nine days before that. aaa reports the average in the garden state is $3.54 for a gallon of regular. in pennsylvania, drivers are paying $3.75 a gallon and in delaware, the average is $3.63. the national average is $3.68. it has been 75 years since the founding of the coast guard auxiliary, the all volunteer group marked the occasion with public tours of rescue boats and fun family activities at penn's landing. auxiliary members spent many hours training at their own

>> dramatic cell phone video captures the moments after a small plane crashes into a home in central minnesota. you can see the flames there shooting from that house after the single engine plane crashed into it. two people in the plane were killed. one person in the house was able to escape unharmed. officials are investigating the cause of this crash.

he may be a convicted felon but that hasn't stopped thousands of people lus ting after jeremy meeks. so many people liked his photo he was nicknamed the handsome felons. he's an admitted gang member with a lengthy criminal history including nine years in jail for grand theft. he was arrested in a gang sweep this week is that being held on a million dollars bail. in a jailhouse interview meeks tried to explain why he had a gun. >> i appreciate the, you know, that everyone thinks i'm handsome. i'm not trying to go at anybody but if i have to back someone up off me from my -- for my own safety, then that's what that was for. like i'm not out there trying to kill people. >> one person who isn't happy about this media frenzy, his wife. the so-called handsome felon is married. he's got two young children. competing in a triathlon is an accomplishment all its own but when it's for a good

cause success is all the better as we know. "eyewitness news" in fairmount park for day one of the try rock philadelphia triathlon. more than 3,000 people, 500 from johnson and johnson signed up to swim the schuylkill river and bike and run through the park all to raise money for children's hospital of philadelphia. one of the participants a grateful man whose daughter battled cancer. >> it wasn't easy. >> it was hard. >> yeah. >> she was diagnosed with neuroblastoma stage four which is a very rare and aggressive cancer and the folks at chop were fantastic. we always said any time we can give become to them we surely will. >> the best try athletes in the world compete olympic distances tomorrow. organizers tell us they expect to raise $325,000 by the end of this weekend. most super heroes fly but this group, they're running. they've got their capes on, though. "eyewitness news" at the navy yard in south philadelphia for the super fun run. similar races are held nationwide to raise money for

charities such as wish upon a hero. most race the 5k but the little caped crusaders they ran their hearts out in are a special win k. every participants was awarded their very own superhero cape. hundreds of people flocked to main street in manayunk today for the manayunk arts festival. it's the 25th year of this events. nearly 300 artists will showcase their work. about 200 people from around the country come to this. it will also be open tomorrow from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. oh, boy, justin, it's races, it's festivals, everything is going on and what a better day to do it. >> summer officially arrived. the calendar says summer but didn't feel like it today. temperatures in the 70's. >> yeah. >> again another weekend very nice. >> beautiful. >> low humidity. we'll keep that going for sunday. then we change things up next weekend. live look at the shore, a few more clouds today, a couple light showers over the past

few hours, nothing heavy but not stopping anyone at the ocean city boardwalk. a lot of people out there enjoying the nice evening setting up. now check out storm scan tree. we had the clouds and a few showers around earl. beginning to move to our south, clear skiing to our north, very nice in there lehigh valley and the poconos in the sunshine, these clouds should thin out from the city and head southward later tonight. skies part to mostly clear into the overnight hours and not much happening again tomorrow, area of high pressure builds in from the north that keeps us sunny, very quiet with low humidity. it is cooler, though. compared to yesterday at this time check it out about four to 8 degrees cooler for philadelphia down into dover, delaware. so that's a sign of that cooler air mass that's starting to move in from canada. 77 the current temperature trenton and philadelphia. we have more sun up in allentown. still hanging onto that 80 degrees but it's a very comfortable 80-degree mark. dewpoint temperatures again shows us how much moisture and humidity is in the atmosphere. very low. once again we're in the 50's. that's very nice for summer

time. so the comfort index very high. current dewpoint 55. same deal on sunday. tells us how much moisture content is in the air so that pretty much brings us to the pleasant mark again for the seconds half of the weekend. if you have outdoor plans tomorrow get outside and enjoy it. wind is really the issue why we have the low humidity. it's currently out of the north but tomorrow it switches a little more out of the east but still that's not a southerly wind so that does not bring in the whom heat and humidity. towards monday the winds change around more serial, you start to feel a little bit of a difference. tuesday is when the humidity returns to our area. 80's tomorrow, warmer than today, plenty of sunshine. high pressure system dominating our weather into the start of next week so monday looks good. temperatures a little bit warmer in the mid 80's and then tuesday warm front starts to move on through. it will pump into the humidity again. warmer temperatures up into the mid to upper 80's and we'll start talking about some shower and thunderstorm chances for the middle of the week but very quiet overnight into your sunday, maybe a few afternoon clouds.

there may be a sprinkle up in the poconos but most areas stay dry. monday looks great, plenty of sunshine. once again a very nice pleasant conditions. tuesday more sun, we do warm up. that's when it starts to become uncomfortable with high humidity levels but very nice tonight. keep the windows if you want. partly cloudy, nice 62 for center city. 50's out in the suburbs. easterly breeze at five to 10 miles per hour. great looking sunday. plenty of sunshine, warm and pleasant, 84. that's right an average for this time of year. southeast wind at 10 miles per hour. and if you're hanging out at the jersey shore or delaware beaches, another great looking day. air temperature upper 70's. more sunshine than today so the u.v. index will be higher. make make sure you have the sunblock handy. rip current moderate so make sure the lifeguards are on the stand when you enter the water. mid 80's sunday monday and tuesday with a decent amount of sunshine. warm it up middle of the week, wednesday upper 80's. that's our best shot to see scattered showers and storms. we'll keep it in the middle

of hunter pence nice guy hands it to this cute little girl. what does she do? this is how she shows appreciation. throwing it back. the guy was a good sport about the whole thing. >> the nba graft dray is the on thursday. the sixers looking to score big with pick three and 10 but there is a new complication with one of those picks. joel embiid underwent surgery to have two screws implantd in his foot. he was in line to go to the cavs with the first overall pick. he's expected to be side behind for up to six months. that leaves another big name up in the air for the sixers. the team has been interested in andrew wiggins but with an injured embiid there's a chance wiggins play not be there at number three so the sixers could choose to trade up or there's hope for the best. the flyers season starting to take shape. the league announcing today the team's first game in the regular season will be held october 8th against the bruins in boston, then back to philly october 9th for the home opener against the devils. flyers holding their annual --

first annual charity softball game at the alumni there at campbell's field. former flyers including paul holmgren taking place taking on members of the media. including a vip meet and greet and all you could eat barbecue above pavement all proceeds go to charity. to the world cup u.s. getting practice in today ahead of tomorrow's big game against portugal. dramatic win against ghana places them in a good position to advance. portugal coming off a four-nothing loss to germany. they face elimination heading into tomorrow night's match. kickoff at 6 o'clock. three games scheduled for today. starting first group f exciting finish for argentina getting the only goal of the game. germany favoring off against ghana. that game end in there a two-two tie. match just getting under way between nigeria and bosnia. that game still scoreless. legal trouble for hope solo.

the long time goalie for the u.s. women's nationals team. solo arrested on domestic violence charges after she allegedly assaulted both her sister and nephew at a home in seattle. officials say she appeared to be intoxicated and upset. she'll remain in jail until monday when she will make her first court appearance. details really just coming in about this story. >> thank you lesley. appreciate that. the summer solstice celebrated in style. still ahead on "eyewitness news" we'll show you which majestic place people in england flock to to witness
