that crash happened, is under investigation. parents, educators and activist, continue to fight for increased fighting for cash strapped philadelphia school district. >> fun our schools, fund our schools. >> reporter: councilman johnson and teachers union president jerry jordan were among those rallying outside gw child's elementary school. some hope that the pennsylvania house might vote on $29 per pack cigarette tax today but that has not happened. if it does pass, that tax could generate 80 million-dollar for the district. school district staffers are feeling the the squeeze. they say resources just aren't there and students are now suffering. "eyewitness news" new jersey reporter cleve bryan is live at the state capitol in trenton with more on a package of bills designed to protect women from abuse, cleve. >> reporter: that is right there are 70,000 cases of domestic violence in new jersey every year and none of them grabbing as much attention as ray rice case, now today, new jersey lawmakers turned their outrage into action. >> we must end this violence, we must end the cycle of domestic violence. >> reporter: addressing domestic vial isn't political but it is personal for gabriel mass car. my mother is a survivor of domestic violence. we all survived tight. >> reporter: her childhood consisted of several stays in battered women shelters until her parents divorced. now you she has a chance to make a difference. >> given a opportunity to be a

legislator we can do something bit. >> reporter: monday new jersey general assembly considered six domestic violence bills that include greater self-defense protection, allowing victims to testify through video, and mandating counseling for offenders. with the the ray rice abuse case fresh on lawmakers mind each bill passed unanimously. >> we can height even the conversation, we can address some of the issues and we can help those individuals that are in this situation. >> reporter: lawmakers say these measures are just the start and many more need to be done even after the outrage over ray rice and other nfl players accused of abuse subsides. >> this issue of domestic violence isn't just about ray rice. >> reporter: for mascara each bill passage is victory for victims surviving domestic violence and many month lost their lives. >> my family was lucky because my mother got out and seek help and she was able to be strong enough for a very abusive relation ship.

the clean up is underway tonight in mexico's baha peninsula after hurricane odial made land fall. it was a powerful storm that hit the resort town of san lucas this morning, forcing thousands into hotel ballrooms
