national weather service has category this tornado as a ef to second on a scale of zero to four. it traveled 4.7 miles ending just about where we are right here. i'm told it is wide so it was about 400-yard across, and produced wind speed of 105 miles an hour as soon as daylight exposed the damage, those living in the largely amish, mennonite community, did what they most often do, and they got to work. >> by this morning, i didn't see that many on the road, they must all becoming to lend their hand, with the clean up. the just pretty a amazing. >> reporter: knowing clean up would be almost as swift as the storm locals turned up to document this rare touchdown. >> like a converge event path along a enter line indicates air flow into the center of the tornado, and it is more concentrated focus. that is typically the telltale sign of a tornado.

>> reporter: national weather service spent the afternoon surveying the damage in order to determine the category of tornado, eventually deeming it ef2 meaning wind speed topped 120 miles an hour. chopper three provided the clear scope of the damage, from overtop of the small town of salisbury, where over 40 buildings were torn apart. >> it was probably on the ground, six to eight minutes, moving around 40 or 50 miles an hour. >> reporter: a tornado warning was issued at 7:21 p.m. giving those in the area about ten minutes before impact. >> i will be honest, i didn't think much of it but it was windy. >> reporter: one of the most striking parties that no injuries were reported, but even more striking, it is that when we were out here this morning we saw many roofs completely off, now look at this. this is how this community respond. the so fast, so swift, so steady, many of these structures have been somewhat rebuilt, others disassembled and ready to be rebuilt from

"eyewitness news" new jersey reporter cleve bryan, joins us live from cherry hill with a look at damage there, cleve. >> reporter: ukee, always the the way this struck just pulled up in the last 20 seconds but there is extensive damage, throughout south jersey here in cherry hill. the lets get right to that individual ohio. with chain saws and heavy equipment, crews labored to remove this enormous tree. the roofies gone, two bedrooms are destroyed and downstairs living room now has a sky light. but according to the home owner the tree fell on a favorable angle. >> i was watching television and she heard a very large what she described as an

explosion. there was nothing damage or that we lost isn't replaceable. so everybody is fine. it is all i really care about. >> reporter: cherry hill fire department says in all they got 60 calls for down tree branches and wires. wood crest section of the town had some of the worst damage. >> this is unbelievable, i have lived in this neighborhood since 1984 and i have never seen any devastation like this. i backup to something just like this and i had my daughter sleep downstairs last night. we were terrified. >> reporter: further south, the limbs are gone but damage could take weeks to repair after a tree fell in the day care and preschool in vineland. this is the room where the babies sleep in cribs. tree fell shortly after the business closed for the day. >> there were no children in here. no parents, no staff. so we were really, fortunate. >> reporter: owner carol deola the knows it was a close call and that puts the mess in the perspective.

>> damage we could fix but human lives, that is something else. so we were really blessed. >> reporter: there is front of the house here in cherry hill. tree came down with such force, it just blew the brick fisod off the front of the building. family says they probable willly won't be able to get back in their house for several weeks, possibly months as the day care won't be opened, until at least the beginning of the next week. reporting live from cherry hill, cleve bryan, cbs-3 "eyewitness news" good much more montgomery county is also cleaning up from storm damage, two people inside this home on new second street at east church road in cheltenham last night when part of the tree came crashing down on it. they were not the hurt but as you can see the damage to the home is, significant. take a look at this scene in chester county, this is the brandywine creek which spilled over its banks. this is near routes 10926. our walt hunter will have more on the brandywine flooding coming up in a live report on "eyewitness news" at the 5:30.

wild weather may have contributed to this building collapse in trenton. video from the trenton post facebook page for vacant house on the 800 block of south broad street. brickwork from the front of the home landed on the sidewalk there. the nearby hems were evacuated as a precaution but there were no injuries. the worst of the storm is gone, but the aftermath of the storm is still being felt, not just in all of the clean up but also in the the air. meteorologist kate bilo is in the weather center with more on when the wind will die down, kate. >> the wind are still very strong and of course that is still a dangerous thing because all of those trees that the saturated ground, everything is shaky outside, and these strong wind could still have a a threat to bring down tree, tree branches and things like. that i want to start with the loop of the storm coming through last night. the a as we paused it right here, there is that rotation on the radar picture that tornado that touched down in eastern lancaster county. this ises was a ef2 tornado, right around white horse in lancaster county. ef2 ratings of 120 to

125 miles an hour with the the path length of 4.7 miles. fifty buildings were damaged with that system. again, ef2 not something we see around here very often, that means again considerable damage on the enhanced fujita scale. lets look the at what else we saw across the region. the trees down in mount laurel. major flooding, and car flooding in bethlehem. large tree on the house in wind field. water rescues active water rescues in berks county. the in the wake of the storm back edge of it is bringing another round of showers and even some snow showers, we have got reports on twitter around honey brook in chester county snow was coming down. you can see light snow showers and rain showers, edging in the the city at the the moment. the winds still incredibly strong gust particular over 30 f the region. that may last us into tomorrow, coming up we will tell what you to expect wind wise tomorrow and we will have better news for weekend as well, ukee, back over to you. as you are aware the same storm system that hit our area spawned deadly tornadoes in the state of virginia.

six people were killed when twisters touched down last night, in waiverly just south of richmond, a two-year old child and two men lost their lives. the virginia's governor has declared a state of emergency. clean up is also underway in north carolina this is video from raleigh-durham, in oxford. tornado touched down there leveling homes and businesses. fortunately no one was killed. a lot of home and car owners are dealing with the aftermath of down trees but is what covered by your insurance and what is not? coming up, consumer reporter jim donovan is on your side with important things that you need to know before filing a claim. turning now to a developing story, shore medical center in cape may county is warning 23 patients that they may have been exposed to hiv and other infectious diseases. hospital officials say that former pharmacy employee fredrick mcclean was charged with stealing morphine and replacing witt saline. they are concerned that iv patients between june 203 and

september of 204, may have been exposed to the the employee's blood. shore medical center is offering the patient's free testing for exposure to hiv, hepatitis c, and hepatitis b. a drive by shooting caught on camera in chester delaware county, take a look at the surveillance video from wednesday afternoon. you see a dark colored minivan pull up and someone inside opens fire on a park car on the 400 block of west third street. twenty-nine year-old darren shaw was shot and killed and police are now asking anyone with any information to give them a call. philadelphia's top prosecutor goes on the defense, district attorney seth williams is speaking out the at criticism mount over handling of the lesean mccoy assault investigation. suv fell through ice in minneapolis and it happened next to a thin ice sign. the it is common to drive across thin ice covered lakes but warm up has authorities seeing more vehicles break go through ice. the driver was okay but it was an expensive plunge, it cost nearly $4,000 to pull the suv out of that lake. fishing boat runs a ground in the waters off new york city last night. when coastguard came into help, they ran into a big problem themselves. their rescue boat overturned in the rough waters churned up by last night's storms. all five members were wearing suits and able to swim some shore but fishing boat was in distress and taking on water. >> they were getting water washing over the railing and going in to the vessel. they were using pumps to pump over and overtime they floated

and thinks where though ended up and grounded. >> reporter: coastguard helicopter pluck seven stranded fisherman to safety. they were taken to the hospital for observation. a cross the region clean up is underway after last night's wild weather. many homes and car owners are dealing with the aftermath now of down trees. >> now if you have experienced tree-related damage three on your side consumer reporter jim donovan has information on filing insurance claims for those repairs. >> those were crazy wind, watching my windows go in and out. >> is there confusion when it comes to these types of claims. so here's what you need to know. trees down in yard, trees down on houses, treason top of cars. it is inevitable after a powerful wind storm. but what is covered by your insurance and what is not depend on a number of factors. if your tree falls on your house, your insurance company will pay for removal of the tree from your home, and it will repair your home as well. if your tree falls on your neighbor's house, your neighbor's home owner policy will be responsible.

even. that is the good news but we have these strong gusty wind gusting over 30 miles an hour to near 40 miles an hour a across the the region. still strong enough any weak trees or anything like that with the saturated ground could still come down but wind are not quite as bad a as they were yesterday. we are still dealing with creeks and streams running high. lets look outside, take you up to bethlehem. this is looking if you look past the parking lot there you can see the creek up in bethlehem. you can see how high it is running. i was driving past schuylkill on kelly drive and see how high water is running there as well. the not breaching banks but boy it is close. luckily we have a nice dry stretch of weather and we should dry things up. but you can see right here here's the creek and it looks like a little run off happening in the yard area, not getting in the parking lot so that is good news. here's a live look at our neighborhood network sites where it is chill any kutztown. the kutztown area middle school only 34 degrees. been a very gray day. we had sun trying to break out mid afternoon but then the clouds, won the battle will and now we are tracking the chance for a few rain and snow

showers this evening. you can see it is last little wave of moisture around back edge of the storm. it is starting to weaken and die out. not all of this is reaching the ground but you are seeing flakes flew. i saw a couple rain drops and flakes fly today in the city and up in the lehigh valley a few snow flakes here and there. not expecting any accumulation with this. we will see cloud eventually break overnight tonight. a few rainfall record was set record, 1.91 inches in philadelphia, old record for the date was 1.84 inches setback in 1979. we had heavy rain that led to flash flood warnings, schuylkill being closed late last night eastbound. the it was a mess out there things are getting better but it is a gradual progression as we wait this major storm to move away. what is ahead tomorrow. wind chills in the 20's. throughout the weekend we are much milder by sunday but next week another chance for rain and that comes in mid week. temperatures have plumeted in the wake of the storm. we are 21 degrees colder then we were this time yesterday. a 26 degrees drop in

temperature in lancaster. temperatures have been dropping throughout the afternoon. peak wind gusts to day 40 miles an hour in philadelphia, 40 miles an hour in mount pocono. 36 miles an hour in atlantic city. windy weather continues through the rest of this afternoon gusts to 35 miles an hour, tonight, into tomorrow, and sustain wind at ten to 20 with gusts to 30 and that will continue right into tomorrow evening as high pressure moves in with the departing storm you will get that pressure gradient and wind will stay strong. that high continues to slide eastward throughout the weekend and we will get in a more calm flow with the west wind developing this weekend and temperatures, will be on their way up. wait until you see this three day forecast, overnight gradual clearing gusty wind, 33 degrees. tomorrow mostry sunny, windy, cold, 39 is the high. doesn't feel better than 29 all day long. but take a look at how we rise. thirty-nine on friday, 44 on saturday, and then 60, april-like on sunday. it will be a beautiful day. doesn't look windy, sunny. i have been looking for a 60-degree sunny not the too

a path of devastation in lancaster county. chopper three over the aftermath of the tornado in salisbury township. it damage homes and other structures. the national weather service says it was an ef2 with wind between 120 and 125 miles per hour. the strong storms last night led to damage all across the region. "eyewitness news" continues 59:30, hi everyone i'm jessica dean. i'm ukee washington. heavy rain sent brandywine creek spilling over it banks. "eyewitness news" reporter walt hunter joins us from chester county where drivers had to scrapple tomorrow find ways around flooded roadways, walt? >> reporter: ukee, the brandywine creek still looks a good bit like brandywine lake, although, waters are receding at this hour, not before, however, causing a number of road closures and detour is here that made it a very confusing day for drivers.

district attorney seth williams takes his anti bullying campaign to andrew jackson elementary school in south philadelphia. the d.a. stopped to talk with the students this morning about making good decisions, and how they can be advocates of change. the children pledged to take a stand begins bullying. they were given a certificate showing jackson elementary is a bully free zone. we are honoring game changers making a positive impact on communities of color throughout our area this black history month. cherri gregg from our sister station kyw news radio explains how an area non-profit, turned one of the cities most horrific tragedies into an opportunity to save lives. >> reporter: july 5th, 2014, the day fire raged through the 6500 block of gesner street, the inferno burned through 13 homes and claimed lives of four young children. >> the fire here started on the front porch and it just ran the block.

it was an incredibly devastating fire. >> reporter: judge renee cartwell hughes is ceo of the red cross eastern pennsylvania region a big part of the non-profit's job is to respond to disaster. the one on guessinner street still harms them. >> they did not have a working escape plan or smoke alarms. >> we felt there was more to do then just respond to a fire. >> reporter: inspired by that tragedy red cross teamed up with the philadelphia fire department to launch, no more fire deaths. >> you cannot predict when this will happen. you have to know what to do. >> reporter: red cross volunteers went door to door, installing 3500 free smoke alarms and helping families map escape plans. starting in the same neighborhood that spark the effort. >> since july 1st we can document three families have been saved. >> reporter: red cross reports a 63 percent reduction in fire deaths in the last year. their goal, to reach all
