>> i don't know where to start when i talk about prince as an artist. ♪ ♪ purple rain purple rain ♪ and prince's last performance. why the fans lucky enough to see it alive said it was more like a church service than a concert. ♪ good morning, everyone from the studio 57 newsroom here in new york. i'm anne-marie green. overnight, the outpouring of grief and tributes to prince moved from coast to coast. medical examiners plan to perform an autopsy on the music superstar today. prince's unexpected and unexplained death yesterday shocked the music world and shocked his fans. he was only 57 years old. prince had been touring up until his death but recently canceled several shows. mark albert is in chanhassen, minnesota, and begins our coverage. >> reporter: crowds gathered

here all through the day, all through the night to pay their respects. some people came in tears. some people came to comfort others with hugs. many people brought flowers. some of them purple flowers to put on the chain link fence here. the flowers now going up in spots as much as six-feet tall. one woman brought her two young children here. she says she wanted to make sure they were a part of this. others paid tribute with music. ♪ hundreds of prince fans took to the streets of brooklyn to dance and sing. spike lee hosted the bash to honor his friend. earlier people gathered at new york city's apollo theater to stage their own impromptu celebration. >> i grew up with prince, so it -- this one hurts. >> this thing called life. indianapolis prince died thursday morning at his suburban minneapolis compound after he was found unresponse 95 an elevator. he was briefly hospitalized last week with what he said was the flu. >> just amazing the love everyone in minnesota has for him.

just great. >> reporter: in downtown minneapolis, a huge crowd gathered for an all-night block party to celebrate one of their own. ♪ i just want your >> reporter: from his musical style to his fashion, fans say prince will be remembered for rewriting the rule book. >> prince was nice with that guitar. ♪ >> reporter: prince won seven grammys for his music which blended functi eed funk, dance, soul. >> he was like a shakespeare or mozart, something out of his time. >> reporter: though 5'2", he was a towering present in the music industry and among the people who knew him best. >> he's our royalty. he's minneapolis. ♪ >> reporter: the exact cause of prince's death is still under investigation. in tribute, the bells of the clock tower of minneapolis city hall will chime to the tune of prince songs on sunday afternoon. mark albert, cbs news, chanhassen, minnesota.

of course the tributes are pouring in. perhaps none as poignant as president obama's saying in part, "as one of the most gifted and prolific musicians of our time, prince did it all -- funk, r&b, rock and roll. he was a virtuoso instrumentalist and electrifying performer. a strong spirit transcends rules, prince once said. and nobody's spirit was stronger, bolder, or more creative." there's poignant, and then there's powerful. here's jennifer hudson's nod to the icon alongside her cast from broadway's "the color purple." ♪ purple rain purple rain ♪ >> after the show, j. hud tweeted together, "we all sang together. after all, prince has touched us all." fellow musician jane may -- john mayer posted, "he inspired a generation of musicians to strive for greatness above anything else," writing, "guitar

players and all musicians everywhere will be picking up a much heavier instrument today." mick jagger had this to say on twitter, "prince was an original lyricist, a startling guitar player. his talent was limitless. prince was one of the most unique and exciting artists of the last 30 years." and oprah winfrey put it simply, "prince, the doves really are crying now. listening to your music, remembering you. r.i.p., prince." "late, late show" host james cordon said he topped his list for carpool karaoke. visibly emotional, he taped a new intro to the show after learning of prince's passing. >> i'm going to miss not being able to hear his new music, and i will miss not being able to see him live again. i will always cherish the fact that i got to be in his audience, just to be in his orbit for just those few nights. what a thing to have been alive when prince was making music.

we are all incredibly lucky. we will miss you, prince. are you truly one of a kind. sometimes i wish life was never-ending, and all good things, they say, never last. best from our show. >> coming up on "cbs this morning," we will talk to another icon -- stevie wonder -- about prince's music and legacy. on to politics now and the republican party rejected an effort to rewrite the rules of their national convention. members of the republican national committee met yesterday in florida. the proposed rule change would have given individuals delegates more power, making it harder to choose a new candidate. the debate comes as some in the gop are looking for candidates other than donald trump or ted cruz. >> we played this much of the game already under one set of the rules. would be kind of unfair to change rules in the middle of the game. >> trump has called the nominating process rigged, especially if the fight goes to

a contested convention. his campaign remains confident he will win the nomination on the first ballot. looking to ease the concern among nervous republicans, adviser to trump assured party leaders that trump will moderate his tone and adopt a more presidential demeanor soon. ted cruz said trump is giving in to political correctness after trump was asked about north carolina's bathroom law and said transgender people should be allowed to use any bathroom they wanted. meanwhile, bernie sanders remains determined to stay in the race. in a fund-raising pitch, he tells voters there is still a path to the nomination. last night, another powerful earthquake hit off the coast of ecuador. the last thing that country needs. the magnitude 6.0 quake and some aftershocks follows saturday's devastating quake that measured 7.8 and killed nearly 600 people. so far there are no reports of new damage. recovery efforts from the weekend quake are moving slowly. tens of thousands remain without

shelter and scrambling for food. more than 8,000 were injured. this morning, houston will see something it has not seen in a few days -- the sun. more importantly, no rain. thunderstorms hit flood-ravaged southern texas again yesterday. since sunday, more than a foot of rain has fallen. water was released from one houston reservoir where there are record water levels. and some residents of wharton, 50 miles southwest of houston, have been ordered to evacuate after the colorado river overflowed its banks. today in london, president obama meets with prime minister david cameron. the president arrived in britain last night. several british politicians had told the president to butt out of the debate over when britain should stay in the european union. mr. obama wrote an op-ed piece saying britain's presence in the e.u. magnifies british influence and helps spread british values. before meeting with the prime minister, mr. obama will have lunch with the queen. yesterday, the president wrapped up his visit to saudi

arabia. he met with leaders of six persian gulf nations. the threat from iran dominated the discussions. that's one of the issues that strained u.s. relations with saudi arabia. the president admits there are differences but says the strain is overblown. the florida man who landed a gyrocopter on the land of the u.s. capitol will be spending four months in jail. douglas hughes was sentenced yesterday. he says his flight a year ago was an attempt to call attention to the influence of big money in politics. he pleaded guilty to a felony charge of operating a gyrokorcor without a license. coming up on "cbs morning news," the cast of "hamilton" goes crazy with a tribute to prince. we'll show prince's last performance. this is the "cbs morning news." minneapolis star tribune" says it best on their front page, "this creative giant couldn't be contained." news of the icon's death is dominating headlines this morning with many papers devoting their front pages to the power of prince. and "variety" reports what fans heard and saw during prince's final shows. ♪ purple rain purple rain ♪ >> he performed last week at an atlanta theater backed only by his own piano playing. one fan described as more like a church service than a concert. ♪ in other headlines now, the spelling bee gets a little tougher. and a hefty price tag for a high-profile hacking. "the new york times" reports it cost at least $1.3 million to hack a phone used by the san bernardino gunman. fbi director james comey hinted at the february yesterday during a technology conference in london. the agency paid an undisclosed group to i ddecode the apple

iphone. the "washington post" report the nba's stance on defending gay and lesbian people. they say next year's all-star game will be moved out of state if the law isn't changed. >> this was a sense from the owners in the room that this is much bigger, not just than an all-star game for the nba, but this is much bigger than the nba. >> the commissioner declined to set a deadline for making a change. the all-star weekend events are scheduled in charlotte in late february of 2017. the s&p lost ten. the nasdaq dropped two. uber has agreed to pay up to $100 million to settle a labor dispute. uber drivers in california and massachusetts will continue to be classified as independent contractors instead of employees. operating expenses would have gone up significantly for uber if drivers were classified as employees. sears holding company is closing 68 kmart stores and ten sears stores. the liquidation of store inventories in the sale or sublease of property will generate cash for the company. sears, struggling with a long sales slump, said it was accelerating the closing of unprofitable stores. and victoria's secret is reportedly getting out of the swimsuit business. buzz feed reports the manufacturer known for its lingerie will stop selling swimwear after this year to focus on other more profitable lines. earlier this month, victoria's secret announced it would be streamlining its operations. >> jill wagner at the new york
