with meteorologist, katie fehlinger live on the cbs-3 skydeck, are you toasting out there yet, katy? >> absolutely had to step inside of the air conditioner, even during the little minute break that we had. really is hot out here, guys. starting to really feel that scorch sunshine, as we're basically at the high angle of the sun, right now, at high noon. now, you mentioned that air quality alert. let's take a look, who is involved. in shorts, everyone, everyone sit in a air quality alert today. now, this is most notable, for the sensitive category of folks. basically, these fall into the category of children, the elderly or any casino of respiratory illness, this is the kind of air pollution level that could bother you. so, now is the time, that you want to just be taking it easy, really, ten to 4:00 p.m. 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. is the window of when the worse of the heat will bother you here. but, fine particle clues, ground level ozone high today. storm scan3 totally quiet, no storms rumbling through here at all, no rain, nothing. so in other words, these

temperatures are only going to spike from here. some smart ways to beat the heat, all common sense type stuff guys. remember, your car can also turn into an oven in minutes, if it is sitting out on that black pavement, and in the direct sunlight, so please be smart about it today. we're in the upper 80s already, and we think we've got the wherewithall to tack another five on to the temperature of 87 at philadelphia international airport so we're shooting for 92 today. regardless, though, it is hot out here right now, and we're going to keep you pretty toasty the rest of the afternoon, with that full sunshine, it is the summer solsus after all, so longest day of the year, that means, we've got 15 hours and 38 seconds to be exact of daylight today. before the sun drops over the horizon. now, that said, if you are, you know, using common sense, this is actually great excuse to hit the pool, hit the beaches, in all of these resort towns, low mid 80s, he can peck takes for daytime highs, with the sunshine, certainly, sitting by the water is going to feel awfully nice, in the meantime, jim, brooke, it is hot out here on the skydeck, i definitely need

to come inside and cool off. >> sounds good to me, thanks, katie. well, it is a historic day in the city of philadelphia, the city now the first major metropolitan area taxing sugary drinks. our trang do live at city hall where the mayor has just signed the sugary drink tax into law within the hour. trang? >> reporter: jim, the mayor signed that bill, right here, over at this desk before a packed house, gave him standing ovation, an as he walked into the room, many people here supportive of the tax because of the estimated 90 million it will provide to universal pre k, mayor kenney says, that this tax will provide 2,000 seat for pre k to open up, in january, of 2017 big fight for them. nutter administration tried to pass this twice, but this tax again is one and a half cents for every ounce of beverage

which includes sodas, diet sodas, any sugary drinks less than 50% juice or milk. we're prepared for sure, been talking with our law department, which is extremely capable of handling this situation. going forward, nothing has been filed yet. so hard to comment on something that's not happened. but we're prepared to fight it. >> preparing lawsuits because they say this tax is a sales tax, and they say it is not legal. meanwhile, this tax, if all goes according to plan, it will start collecting it in january of 2017. but we will have muff more of this story tonight at 5:00 and 6:00. live from city hall, trang do, cbs-3, "eyewitness news". >> thanks a lot, frank. warminster police trying to track down tire slasher. greg argos joins us from laugh early chevrolet to tell us how many car own remembers affected, and why police they have good shot of catching the culprit. greg? >> good afternoon, brooke, yes, big mess here, laugh

early chevrolet in warminster, 27 vehicles, 27 pick-up trucks, take a look, with their tires slashed, each of these tires will have to be replaced, and, this is not the only location police say that was affected. now, this is surveillance video given to us by laugh early chevrolet in warminster, sales manager here, joe take err, says the motion activated cameras caught this guy around 3:00 a.m. saturday morning, armed with something sharp, possibly a knife, and stabbing holes in tires here. in total, 27 trucks had all four tires destroyed, and police suspect the same person is responsible for damaging tires, on three other vehicles, at nearby hertz rental car bills, and five more at the york auto glass shop. here at laugh early, the damage was done, very quickly. >> very -- was done very quickly actually, probably was here three minutes, four minutes, if that. >> now, all morning long, here, employees have been replacing these tires, and all of the sales manager says,

some $22,000 in damage was done, and right now, warminster police have not made any arrests. live here in warminster, greg argos, cbs-3, "eyewitness news". wow, bizarre story there, thanks, greg. in feasterville, investigators are trying to piece together the complicated financial history of a man found living with 12 girls. the homeowners, lee kaplan, faces charges including statutory sexual assault. one of the girls is 18 years old, and police say kaplan may have fathered two daughters with her. police also believe her parents, exchanged the girl for help, with their family's financial troubles. >> stay with "eyewitness news" for continuing coverage of this story, as new details emerge, we'll bring them to you on tv and on line at cbsphilly.com. investigators say, it could be days before they located body of driver whose mini-van was pulled from the delaware river sunday morning. eyewitnesses say the vehicle was speeding down oregon avenue, and cross-columbus boulevard, then crashed through a fence at the shipyard, and plunged into the

river. police divers spent hours searching the river yesterday, but they came up empty. now, getting new information today about what the orlando shooter was thinking and doing, during his deadly shooting rampage a week ago. weijia jiang shows us the fbi releasing transcripts of the gunman's negotiations with police. >> omar mateen spoke with police three times during his shooting rampage in inside the pulse night club, during one call, he said, i'm in orlando, andy the shootings. another time he said there was a vehicle with bombs out outside and you people are going to get it, and i'm going to ignite it if they try to do anything stupid. the fbi released excerpts from the calls monday morning, but some parts are redacted including mateen's pledge to isis. >> we're not going to property gate their rhetoric, their violent rhetoric, and we see no value in putting those individuals names back out there. >> mateen's wife remains under suspicion, but has not been charged. police say she was with him when he purchased ammunition, and when he took surveillance

of disney world, and pulse night club. >> we're nearing the conclusion of our processing of the crime scene, here, outside the pulse night club. >> the 49 victims of the attack were remembered at mass vigil sunday night, estimated 50,000 people gathered in downtown orlando, as the names of each victim were red allowed. people said the event helped them focus on healing, and moving on. weijiaweijia jiang, cbs-3, "eyewitness news". the maker of the semiautomatic rifle used to kill at sandy hook elementary school defending it self in court today. hearings began in connecticut this morning. attorneys for the gun makers say the law protect them from the lawsuit brought by sandy hook families. also in the news today, the supreme court left assault weapons bans in play at connecticut and new york. senate planning a vote tonight whether to stop potential terrorist frost buying guns with lawmakers hoping to prevent future tragedies like

the massacre in orlando, but democrats and republicans are pitching different plans. as cbs correspondent craig boswell shows us, proposals are unlikely to pass. >> mr. mcconnell -- >> the senate set to vote this evening on legislation aimed at keeping guns out of the hands of terrorists. democrats have a proposal to stop people from buying guns if they're on the no fly list or terrorist watch list as well as expanded backgrounds checks for firearm sales made on line and at gun shows. >> mrs. compelling evidence, not necessarily probable cause, but reasonable suggestion pigs, that this could be a terrorist threat, they can deny the weapons. >> but republicans wore that i people could wrongly ends up on these lists, their plan, sponsors by senator john cornan would require the fbi get court order to stop the sale of gun to proposed terrorist, proposal being backed by the national rifle association. >> it provides due process for the good people, and it gives law enforcement the ability where they can conduct these

in other news, texas pilot in the hospital this noon. >> his plane meanwhile is on the roof of a houston building, the plane crash landed on the roof of a macy's distribution center. disappeared from radar, in end prepare to houston airport, took officials about an hour to find it. the 54 year old pilot suffered non-life threatening injuries, the federal aviation administration is investigating, what led to the crash. well, starting this morning, millions of ticket master customers are eligible to receive free ticket. but some are having trouble getting them. ticket master settled a lawsuit over ticketing fees, its distributing $45 million worth of cash, discounts, free tickets. customers must have purchased ticket between october 1999 and february 2013. so are you eligible in well, log on to ticket master website. click on vouchers, you may have to wait, though, some people report the website has been crashing, also, seats only good for selected shows. always something in the fine print. still ahead on "eyewitness news". >> blazing heat out west,

residents near san diego orders erred to evacuate sunday, when triple digit temperatures ignited brush fire in a dessert community. >> i went in, got the olds lady, got her to get the dogs out, i went back in, looked out the back door, a wall of flames. in santa barbara county, crews working around the clock to contain the so-called sherpa fire. now, in its sixth day. their efforts are being hampered by steep terrain, and high winds. >> if we had a week without winds, we would be great. unfortunately not predicted. >> over the weekends temperatures topped 118 degrees in arizona. creating dangerous conditions for people spending time outdoors. >> the water, nice little sun, shouldn't be too many people out there. so we'll go until i feel tired. still lethargic, i'm column back down. >> rescue crews sent to help hikers near tuscon, sunday two, died, believed from heat related illnesses, one, still

missing. and crushing heat is expected to get even worse, forecasters say, highs in phoenix could hit 120 degrees today. hena daniels, cbs-3, "eyewitness news". >> those are high numbers all ought west. >> and the course of the heat through the southern four corners region, actually a lot of all time record highs, that are even going to be challenging from this. so, let's actually turn our folk us to that, take a look at some of these all time records, that would you need to beat. we are talking temperatures that are very difficult for us here in the delaware valley to even imagine, we just haven't experience philadelphia, look at this, death valley, all time record there, 134 degrees palm springs, 125, phoenix, 122, if they gets to 120 in parties every phoenix, flirting with all time territory, vaguest tuscon, into the upper teens, in other words, these are the forecasted highs for today, at sky harbor international 116

what we are expecting, but regardless, you know, go into s other observation sites around there, where/could easily be flirting with 120, 123 palm springs, 124 needles, just unbelievable the kind of heat they're experiencing, very apetaly named location. storm scan, very, very wide zoom here. the unfortunate news you won't see any rain come in, any time soon here, to these areas. rather, the heat continues, that winds that we heard about in the package continuing, also, worth a mention, the tropics also lighting up right now, at the moment, you've got tropical storm daniel, starting to move on shore, in mexico, so a lot of other international and national headlines being made in the weather department, for our area, it is primarily a frontal passage, followed up by area of low pressure later in the week, otherwise just starting off the summer season on pretty toasty note. right now nothing but sunshine, you can, how much, see this next frontal boundery starting to head our way. and, by tomorrow, it puts us in at least through the southern counties, a slight risk for some severe weather.

so with a we may end up finding here specially for the second half of the day tomorrow, is through kent, cape may, even southern cumberland, points south. those counties, the potential for some stronger to severe thunderstorms, again, late day hours, primarily when it looks like that would fire up. because all you're going to be doing meantime building up the heat, building up moisture content, so when the system crosses it ends up sparking instability you need to see stronger storms, that's not today. that's tomorrow but nor now great beach weather, and latter up on the sun block, and moderate risk for rip current. live neighborhood network, looks awfully inviting doesn't it? in the sunshine up and down the shore towns 18 degrees, daytime high, uv index up there, sun block required, and also, swim near the lifeguards, always good rule of thumb, but specially when you get past low up to moderate risk for rip currents, you just got to take it easy out there and be --
