and humid already, but it business to get even worse. good afternoon everyone aim he jim donovan. i'm brooke thomas. as we head in the weekend we are facing hottest temperatures this summer. lets get a first look at forecast with meteorologist katie fehlinger in the cbs-3 weather center. >> if afternoon to you both. this will be a are hot, stretch for our area and it comes this time for so many people coming to town for the democratic national convention and it looks like this will be a stretch of days that lasts us, well into next week, but we really do have a core of the heat, that is going to be most palpable in the days ahead. that is where we will turn our focus to the excessive heat watch while which turn in the warning but for now just a watch and kicks in effect tomorrow morning, and it will last us right through to monday, afternoon, so a three day stretch, of what we coin, excessive heat. now at the moment on storm scan not much is happening locally but we will show you this wider zoom for a region. we had then are storms rumbling through western pennsylvania a sign have of

gerald was gunned down in an ambush by a lone gunman killed by police. he had been on the force for just one year, after time in the u.s. army and marines. funerals for the other law enforcement officers kill in the ambush will be tomorrow, and monday. fourteen children and church van driver in the hospital after a crash in the poconos. well, it happened about 2:00 this morning on route 423 near tobyhanna monroe county. one person was air lifted to the hospital but rest of the injuries are minor. van was heading to new york after a trip to the pocono resort. there is no word on what caused the accident. and a massachusetts lawmakers is making a play for the 2017 nba all-star game. nba is moving the game from charlotte, north carolina because of the league's objections, to a state law, that limit anti discrimination protections to gay, lesbian and transgendered individual. massachusetts house speaker

welcome back. what forecasters call a heat dome is hovering over large areas of the country today. >> we are in for it, beginning today, dean reynolds shows us how the city of chicago is fighting back, against the extreme heat. >> i'm extremely hot. >> this humidity is terrible.

>> yes, it is. >> reporter: more than 150 million people will be struggling with oppressive temperatures as the heat dome moves east. in texas, brutal sun caused this highway to buckle, in madison, wisconsin school district officials had to cancel summer school. in chicago, fire fighters have been put on zero to 15 minute rotations, to prevent overheating. the city is trying to do its part to bring temperatures down. >> so this little plot of grass is probably doing a little bit of cooling for the prudential building. >> reporter: chicago's former chief sustain ability office karen wigart says darker surfaces like concrete and asphalt, retain high temperatures, and, so-called, deep islands. >> in the day, the heat is absorbed and often actually released at night n day and night we even up with a harden requirement and move out more, we will get more trees, and green.

to what is typical for summertime heat. i'm not saying we will never see temperatures like this but it does get brutal when you factor in humidity on these days. lets start off with a quick check of storm scan. we were talking about possibility of thunderstorms and over the last couple of hours, lot of those storms have been dwindled and fizzled out across western pennsylvania. now eventually we will see more of them, firing up over our area. so especially through northern branch of the region we will likely end up with a possibility here for some of these what will be isolated showers and storms, so to potentially strong locally strong or severe. most, basically central sliver of the delaware valley sits in the marginal risk, lowest on the totem pole and your pomp up variety further south and off to the northerly high valley, northern most tip there of bucks county and portions of the pocono sit in the slight risk for any of these heavier storms, downpours, gusty wind, small sized hail, we will keep an eye on the radar as day progresses. nothing right now though but temperatures are certainly spiking, aren't they, pair of

eight in philadelphia, allentown, trenton and ac, heck in the 90's in the most outlining suburbs in reading right how but you have to factor in the humidity. over next few days we have see a worst chunk of where that heat will be at its most brutal. tomorrow is the worst, feeling like 105, possibly hotter then that in some community, more like a whooping 100 on sunday, it is ever so slightly less humid but still pretty rough stuff and then, on monday, as we are right back into 104, as far as the peak of the heat index values. all of the common sense stuff we talk about, if we don't have benefits of the air conditioning space or maybe you don't have that at home, you want to just, find a mall, movie theater, anything to stay cool in this a and limit your outdoor activities the at the height of the day. 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at its worst at this time of the year. beautiful shot from a pocono cameras at cam aal back. they have the right idea smirk and splashing at the water park at cammal back. of course head to the shore
