"eyewitness news" reporter justin finch is live outside the building in center city this morning. justin, so what's the next happening there at the criminal justice center?

>> reporter: jan, brooke, good morning. for now the cjc is closed for business today, so that repairs and the investigation can get underway. after that elevator crash thursday morning injured two, one now home from the hospital. the other, that sergeant was critically injured. sergeant paul owens continues recovery at hahnemann hospital today. sheriff jewel williams paid a visit. >> he is in a lot of pain. his family is there with him, his mother and his wife. >> reporter: the veteran recovering from surgery, broken bones, head trauma, internal bleeding after the chaotic thursday morning at the criminal justice center. "eyewitness news" was there at the philadelphia police and fire department responded, and evacuated hundreds from the cjc. >> all we heard was a big bang, we just grabbed our stuff and just left. my supervisor said let's go. >> the mayor's office reports staff elevator car crashing up and through a shaft ceiling at the justice center penthouse. sergeant owens age 48 was

inside. then, debris from that collision smashed onto a second car below. the only court staffer inside. >> what happened? >> i don't know. something exploded inside the elevator. >> then whisk away in shock to hahnemann hospital for treatment, hours later our camera was outside hahnemann when smith released and headed home. no doubt relieved. >> good? you're okay? >> city records show all cjc elevators passed inspections back in june, the malfunction cause now under state investigation. and back live, you can see, that police tape covering those stores here at 13th and filbert. now, some court business will resume today. talking preliminary a rangment, bail operations, and emergency services, the city meantime mandates that the elevators here be repaired and re-certified before the building can reopen and that elevator be used by court staff here again, sergeant owens is recovering now, at hahnemann hospital from

surgery, cjc should be open for business regular business that is by monday morning. live here in center city, justin finch, cbs-3, "eyewitness news", jan, brooke, back into you. >> thank, justin. now that elevator accident happened just after a hearing for monsignor william lynn. he will be retried on child endangerment charges in may of next year. lynn was released from prison on tuesday, he was convicted for the way he handled complaints that priests were molesting children. but the state supreme court overturned that conviction last week. lynn is free on bail, and living with relatives. reputed philly mob boss, joey merlino, among 46 people indicted in connection with alleged organized crime activities. he was arrested in palm beach county florida ann period before a federal judge. the wide ranking charges for the group include racketeering, conspiracy, arson, and firearms trafficking. authority say the mafia family's operated in new york, pennsylvania, massachusetts, and florida, over the last six

years. this morning, six people are in custody after big drug bust in north philadelphia. investigators say they seized more than 520-pound of cocaine with street value of $23 million. most of the drugs were found in a warehouse at second and cambria. >> this seizure represent a very large amount of cocaine that did not hit the streets of philadelphia, that did not infect our children and our families, and that did not bring over $23 million in cash back to the drug trafficking organizations. >> the drugs believed to have come in through the port of philadelphia from at far away as puerto rico and the dominican republic, the raid a result of month long investigation involving local, state and federal authorities. >> philadelphia police need help finding a man wanted for attack ago woman in kensington and that's not the only crime he is accused of committing. this is surveillance video of the man they are looking for,

police say he grabbed a woman last month, and choke her until she was unconscious. when she finally regained consciousness, she was naked behind a building on jasper street. police say the same man is wanted for murder and four rapes. >> new this morning, police are investigating a shooting in southwest philadelphia that has left a man fighting for his life. this happened on the 2200 block every south 69th street, just before midnight. the victim was struck in the groin, leg and abdomen. he is in critical condition. so far there is no motive or description of a suspect. >> in campaign 2016, expert say, donald trump is struggling to get his campaign back on track, a mid series every miss steps this week, and declining pole numbers. he campaigns in iowa and wisconsin today. on thursday, trump's own runningmate mike pence split with him once again. pence voiced his support for the re-election bids at senators john mccain and kelly. pair of polls out yesterday has trump trailing hillary clinton by several point nationally.

nerves. >> all i heard was a big boom. >> reporter: the national weather service confirms a 80-mile per hour tornado touched down over half mile track. at least four buildings, believed to be abandoned, collapsed. many cars were also damaged, during the storm. two minor injuries were reported, officials centuries cue crews, with search dogs, out to comb through the wreckage. >> we take all of the precautions, so we have -- that's why we have the dogs, dogs really well trained. >> at the height of the storm, tens of thousands of people were without power. >> the winds was so strong, the win was picking us up. >> the damage happened mostly in and around the city's seventh ward, an area hit hard by hurricane katrina in 2005. >> brian web, for cbs-3, "eyewitness news". just so hard to seep, devastating, the people of new orleans are dealing with another weather issue, as if they haven't had enough. but what can you do? >> thankfully nothing like

that here. >> luckily it was only on the ground for half mile. could have done much more damage. here we are doing quiet conditions this morning, getting a live look, at down the shore. ocean city, new jersey, beautiful, the sun coming up. what a nice start to our day today. live look on "skycam 3". cape may county, gorgeous, and if you're strolling on the beach on this friday morning, you are luckily -- lucky, but almost to the weekends, and conditions are nice once again this morning. waking to up some cool temperatures, certainly by august standards, temperature right around 70 degrees, in philadelphia, 64 in allentown, 59 degrees your current temperature in mount pocono. we will get a look at some of the suburbs, 606 degrees right now in mt. holly. at cool start in quakertown, at 61 pottstown. we have dry air in place, temperatures able to cool pretty efficiently during the overnight period. dew point starting to creep up a bit in philadelphia. now up to the middle 60s, might be seeing little bit of the muggy factor, up toward the lehigh valley and poconos, nice and dry, head into the second half of our day today we will start to feel bit more

humid, mostly sunny, high temperature right around 87 degrees, average high in philadelphia, and overnight tonight, not quite as cool, with the increase in the moisture temperatures will cool down as effectively, so 73 degrees, under increasing clouds, our sunset at 8:09. storm scan3, showing us very quiet conditions, just couple of showers, starting to pop up near baltimore, otherwise, we keep it nice and dry. we do have a weather system up winds that will roll through as we head into the day tomorrow bringing us chance of some scattered storms, that could be on the stronger side. but nice, sunshine returns by sunday, monday, looking and feeling good, as well. and for today, down the shore, feeling good as well. mostly sunny, bit more humid, 83 degrees, water temperature, 75. right now, as we head into the day tomorrow, things looking stormy, so do watch out for that storm factor. steamy, as well, high temperature at 90 degrees. and then as we head into the second half of the weekend, beautiful conditions return. that humidity drops right off. we like that. one day, humid, and then gone.

we can deal with that for one day. >> yes, one day as we were kind of saying saturday, one day to have a little bit of rain. we can deal with that. we can deal with anything on a friday, right? tgif guys, good morning, just waking up with us, roads looking really good. only dealing with one other accident that's now since cleared out of the way. you have a couple of updates on septa. but overall guys look at the roadways, gorgeous out there, they are looking actually very quiet, usually we see this on friday. kind of oddly enough heat up in the 5:00 hour, kind of hold steady even into the 6:00 hour, and then moving on to the 7:00 hour it is really anyone's guess. we know it will start to get busy in the 7:00 hour. overall for the 6:00, we kind of see it hold steady like here for the most part, what we typically see, then of course you can see the gorgeous sunshine, so moving in the eastbound side, probably hit you little bit. you will need your sunglasses, schuylkill westbound at city avenue once you jump off the boulevard you can see it here, your looking good. eastbound side, looking a lot lick this, moving into center city, but overall, schuylkill, you are looking great.

we're right outside the olympic park where millions from all over the world, will be watching, as those games begin. and as you said, there has been so many concerns, leading up to the games. along the lines of what you are tacking about, also the seek a -- zika cyrus, shotty construction, dirty water, and now they want to be back to it fun loving culture. >> along the copa cabana beach, making memories ahead of the olympic games. >> i'm excited to see everyone with the energy, i've never seen it before, only in television. >> armed police officers watch the crowds, very closely. >> my intent is just nice to see the presence here, what i would expect at olympics. >> military ships can be spotted right off the coast. >> the landscaping, beautifully painted buildings what most tourist also see along the walkway built specifically for the olympics. what you can see behind me,

have this is what most think of when they think of rio, construction, worn down buildings. finishing touches being done on new subway line expected to officially open today. it was supposed to be finished months ago. as for team usa, most members here and ready to go. including the most decorated olympian ever, swimmer michael phelp, with 22 medals. he will carry the stars and stripes in tonight's opening ceremonies. >> just the honor, the opportunity, to do that, it is incredible. >> phelps is looking to add to his collection of gold, and so will all of the other american athletes. while thousands of fans from around the world get a taste of the olympics, in south america, for the first time ever. the opening ceremony will last about three hours. and while there has been no official words on who will light the coldren, lot of spec lake it could be soccer star,

palaia, how much, there could be hiccup with that, too, because as people say, he has contractural issues, brooke, jan. >> that's interesting, i know it is crowded and hard getting around there right now. what's been your experience? >> reporter: i have to tell you we don't have one of those official olympic parking passes because we just don't have one, so our driver had to be able to get around in normal traffic. and it took almost two hours to get between here and copa cabana beach a little more than 10 miles from olympic village. so it is very, very congested, very crowded, one of those things that the government actually gave a holiday yesterday and today, making it little bit easier, still lots of crowds. as you can imagine, the last several days leading up to the olympics, has not been that crowded around olympic park. but all of that will change once the games begin. >> wow. i thought the traffic here was bad. >> my goodness, thank you, jamie. let's get a check now on the wetter. >> yes, lauren, weather

crashing through the sealing. it sent debris to second elevator shaft which hurt a woman within that elevator. city records show the elevators inspected in june, they were all check again yesterday, the building will stay closed today. pa investigating possible contamination risk in west depford, gloucester county. over the last several years, people who live on berkley court found little pieces of plasmic their yard, see it there, epa soil testing revealed pieces were from crushed car battery casings, and could pose a lead contamination risk. a battery recycling business was actually on that site, until the neighborhood was developed, in the late 1980s. it is illegal. that's not an easy question to answer. so this happened a long time ago most likely, so i can't say whether it was legal or illegal at that time. >> the township should have caught onto that when they sent their inspectors out to check on the plumbing and all. >> now, the township

administrator says they're cooperating with the epa. the epa says they'll continue to test homes in that development. a georgia dad is in jail because police say his twin, 15 month old girls died after being left in a hot car. officers say the girls were spotted in an s.u.v. yesterday, as temperatures hit more than 90 degrees. when police got to the scene, they say, neighbors and the girls' father were trying to cool down the girls with ice packs, in a kitty pool. the girls were pronounced dead at a hospital. jail records show their father is charged with two count every involuntary manslaughter, and two count of wreckless conduct. >> this morning, police are investigating after they say someone booby-trapped a trail in northern new jersey. this happened in high mountain park in wayne. police found broken bottles, wooden planning with nails sticking out of them, anbarb wire. they're telling everyone to be careful when they visit this trail. >> this morning, investigators leaking for a plan who george zimmerman says punched him in
