we have leave team coverage on this hot day today. we begin with meteorologist lauren casey in our weather center. lauren. >> thanks natasha. brutal heat we're contending with in this multi-day extreme heat event. we have an excessive heat warning effect in the poconos, that will expire at 7 o'clock this evening but for the rest of us we go until 9 o'clock tomorrow evening as another hot day and humid day is in store. temperatures right now 96 degrees in philadelphia, we're at 95 in dover, 91 degrees right now in atlantic city. and we all know if you spent one second outside so far today, it is the humidity as well. check out some of these feels-like temperatures. 107 in philadelphia, just about two hours ago our heat index was at 111. we're at 110 right now what it feels like when you step outside in millville and feeling like 106 in wildwood. if you're heading to the phillies game prepare for the heat and humidity.

94 degrees for first pitch. we'll still have some sunshine around maybe a very spotty thunderstorm but most of us staying dry and just dealing with this heat. still feeling like 105 degrees. we'll talk more about what's in store as we head into the day tomorrow. still dealing with the heat. not quite as humid so i'll have some little bit of good news, little nugget of good news coming up in just a few minutes. >> we'll take anything. thank you very much, lauren. fans of jimmy buffet trying to stay hydrated as well down the shore. thousands are in atlantic city for a big concert featuring the legendary singer. "eyewitness news" reporter anita oh is live on the boardwalk with the very latest. anita. >> reporter: well, natasha, there's a little bit of a breeze but it is still very hot, very humid and it is hard to breathe but that has not stopped tons of people from making their way down here to the boardwalk. you can see the crowds of people walking by to see jimmy buffet take the stage. it's been three years since the margaritaville singer was last in atlantic city. he's performing today along

cleaning up the front yard here said that a tragedy occurred and that the family would have no further comment. meanwhile neighbors say they were asleep and didn't hear anything. gunfire erupted on vicki court a usually quiet cul-de-sac in hamilton new jersey around 4:00 a.m. police arrived to find dominic neal with a critical gunshot wound to the head lying by the front steps. >> this is like right here, right around the corner here so it was a little scary. >> reporter: detectives interviewed homeownerrer who said he went out to his front porch to smoke between 3:30 and 4:00 a.m. he saw neal coming up the walkway in a black hoodie with his head down, one hand on his waist band and the other reaching for the door. homeowner said he shouted at neal to stop and when he didn't the homeowner fired three to four shots through the storm door striking neal once. neighbors say they didn't hear a thing. >> didn't hear anything at all, no commotions or anything and i didn't realize anything was going on until i came out 6 o'clock in the morning with my dogs. >> reporter: police did not

release the homeowner's name but say he's a corrections officer. >> kind of keeps to himself. i know he is a corrections officer and, you know, i don't really speak to him a lot but, you know, like i said he keeps to himself and, you know, there was -- there's been no problems. >> reporter: officers found neal's car a block away near the intersection of buchanan and mcclellan avenues. investigators say the homeowner's girlfriend was inside the house and did have a domestic violence restraining order against neal. medics rushed neal to capitol health where he later died. so far no charges have been filed in this case. in hamilton township mercer county, i'm trang do, cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> a stabbing outside of pat's stakes sends a man to the hospital. it happened about one too. 45 this morning. the 20-year-old victim was stabbed once in the shoulder and was treated at a nearby hospital. it's still not clear what led to the stabbing. no arrests have been made just yet. and delaware state police are looking for this woman.

investigators say she poured bleach on another woman inside a target because the victim was blocking the aisle with her cart. the violence happened in brandywine hundred last thursday. the bleach also struck a one-year-old child that was in the victim's shopping cart as well. they were treated for minor injuries. you are asked to contact police if you recognize this suspect. and now louisiana is under a state of emergency as flooding rains kill at least two people. right now high water rescues are under way. cbs news correspondent omar villafranca has the latest. >> reporter: the national guard used a helicopter to rescue a man clinging to a tree branch in louisiana saturday. more than a thousand people had to be pulled to safety after historic flooding. >> our house is gone under. our cat, horses, everything is gone under back there. >> reporter: the rain started falling friday causing rivers across the state to overflow their banks. more than 100 roads are now

closed. >> you can't get through, cars are getting washed off the road. >> reporter: in walker a graveyard flooded and caskets were floating above ground. the governor of louisiana has declared a state of emergency. >> asking everyone to simply evacuate if you're supposed to do that f you're being advised do that. >> reporter: officials expect another four to 6-inches of rain to fall before it's all over. a flash flood watch remains in effect through sunday for most of southeastern louisiana. in jeannie holmes' neighborhood the water is knee deep. she is still trying to recover from flooding five hos ago. >> the pictures you can't replace and they're actually still in the big green rubber made from last advertisement i've never put them up. while some homeowners are waiting to survey the damage holmes says it's time to move. omar villafranca for cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> well, now on the campaign trail. the vice presidential candidates rallied voters today. republican mike pence made a stop at joe willie's that's a

burg are joint in his hometown of columbus indiana. during today's visit pence exchanged greetings with members of the army's elite 101st airborne division and also took selfies with other supporters. democratic vice presidential candidate tim kaine is in new hampshire tam he went after donald trump at a rally in manchester for so far refusing to release his tax returns. recent pos polls show kaine and hillary clinton holding a slim league over donald trump and mike pence. the man who brought to life one of the most beloved characters in the star wars saga has died. kenny baker started his show business career at 16 as parts of a performing troupe and later worked as a deejay. the 3-foot 8-inch actor died today at his home in preston, england. no cause of death is known just yet. kenny baker was 81 years old. stay with us.

everything naand it doesn't take is so wholesothe whole paycheck. giant's exclusive nature's promise. eat well for less. my giant. >> eight philadelphia pools are closing early this summer season due to staffing issues and this includes the northern liberties pool on fairmount avenue. other pools that were slated to close this weekend are now staying open because of the dangerous heat. 13 of the 21 neighborhood pools that were supposed to close will now be opened from noon until 5:00 tomorrow. and you can find a list of all those locations on our web site cbsphilly.com. now today's heat and humidity could not stifle competition at the second annual mayor's cup right here in philadelphia. cherri gregg from our sister station kyw news radio station reports from the belmont plateau. >> reporter: searing sun and nick humid air was no deterrent as more than 800

runners lined up to hit the trails. >> runners set. go. [cheers and applauseism they participated in one of five events including a half marathon. >> we've got emt on site here. we've actually got a medical coordinator who is one of the volunteers he's an emt as well. >> reporter: race coordinators put water and gatorade stations along the race route. the runners were quickly drained by the heat. >> they looked okay. some of them are tiring out a bittism and that's just a mile in. >> it's hot. it's real hot. >> reporter: leo says an out of control heart rate meant he he had to call it quits at mile four. >> once you're out in the sun for 2 miles i pretty much knew that i was going to be cooked. >> reporter: with medics close by several other runners also tapped out but most made it through. >> it was brutal. 85 at the start and hotter on the blacktop. >> reporter: jamie morganstern ran 10 miles. her secret double the cups of water. >> i poured one over my head

and one into my mouth every stop. >> reporter: in addition to this water to fight this unbearable heat there's been a lot of encouragement going on to keep these runners going. and some splashing. >> woo who. >> thank you. >> reporter: plus a mind-set on one thing. >> i wanted to win. >> reporter: today she beat the heat. at the belmont plateau cherri gregg kyw news radio for cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> oh, boy, it certainly is hard to beat the heat no doubt about that. it attacks from you all angles. >> there's no escaping it. the shade doesn't really help. >> no. >> nothing really helps and as soon as you step outside you just start perspiring immediately. >> melting. >> basically everyone is melting today and that's because of these temperatures we have up into the mid up to are 90's so i guess the place to be is down the shore but really can't find much relief there either getting a live look at ocean city new jersey. looks a little sparse out there certainly for a saturday. probably a lot of people spending some time indoors in the ac because we were near a

record high temperature today in philadelphia. our high temperature so far for today, 97 degrees, just 2 degrees shy of the record of 99 set back in 2002. we did break a record today in atlantic city. got very close in places like allentown and reading topping off at 96 degrees. 96 the high temperature in millville and temperatures right now are still extremely hot. 94 in wilmington. 96 degrees in philadelphia. we're at 95 in dover. down the shore check out these temperatures. a little bit of a sea breeze starting to get going right now, ocean city you're down to 82 degrees but at rehoboth beach up into the middle 90's right now. and checking in on our live neighborhood network, yes, much of the same extreme heat. dover air force base 97 degrees, haddon heights sitting at 95 degrees currently. so we have the extreme heat and then on top of that we have that insufferable florida-like humidity that's allowing those feels-like temperatures to just shoot up

into the triple digits where they've been throughout the day today. 107 is what it feels like when you step outside in philadelphia, feeling like 106 in wildwood and dewpoints they tell the story of that insufferable humidity. dewpoints in the mid to upper 70's to near 80 degrees. yes, this is tropical-like humidity but we're going get a little teensy break as we head into the day tomorrow. we'll go from insufferable dewpoints down to just oppressive but we're still going have the heat there as well, so those heat indices are going to be rising up into the triple digits once again tomorrow afternoon. it will just feel slightly more comfortable. overnight tonight chance of a spotty thunderstorm, very warm only falling back to 81 degrees. that would be a for an overnight low. then tomorrow 96 degrees. our record again 99 so we'll get close to that. mostly sunny skies with late day thunderstorms developing. we do have a few storms right now on storm scan3. all of them west of the i-95 corridor. berks county seeing a good bit of storm activity over the last couple hours, at least the most across the tell

valley now have this kind of cell that's moving eastbound. frequent lightning a brief heavy rainfall. national weather service is talking about the potential of issuing a watch for portions of the poconos. that's where we're going to seat best chance of shower and thunderstorm activity as we head into the evening hours and future weather is showing us that i think east of the i-95 corridor our chances are pretty slim for any storm activity over the next several hours and for tomorrow, you're relaxing down the shore, still very hot, 92 degrees. that will be the driest location with just a chance of an isolated late day thunderstorm. best rain chances again going to be in the poconos with downpours and thunderstorms looking likely kind of on and off throughout the day but our high temperature will reach up into the upper 80's in the poconos tomorrow. mid 90's for many of us once again topping at 96 degrees in atlantic city tomorrow. 96 in dover. and our future heat indices showing us what's in store as we led into the evening hours. now, i guess the good news is this is the worst day we get a little bit better as we head into the day tomorrow but

check this out. future heat index even after midnight tonight, it still feels like middle 90's in center city philadelphia. future heat index rising up into the triple digits by tomorrow afternoon. not quite as high. i think most heat indices will stay below that 105-degree range. great news, right? then as we head into the evening hours, again, we are going to see those elevated heat indices still feeling like 90's by 10:00, 11:00 in the evening tomorrow evening and then on monday dewpoints tick down a little bit further so not quite as humid. 90 degrees, thunderstorms looking likely on tuesday. that's the day to have the umbrella. wednesday and thursday temperatures take a setback into the upper 80's and we'll see those rain chances kind of minimizing as we head throughout the week but altogether, not a ton of relief. >> oh, boy, i know, we're over here grunting and groaning. >> i know. >> but seriously coming in

today my car said a hundred degrees. high to do a double take. >> i will 105. >> you did? really. >> very accurate. >> yeah, it would appear to be quite accurate. thank you so much lauren. >> my car is smart. >> oh, no, say it isn't so with the qb situation. >> i have great news. just the news eagles fans did not want to hear. quarterback of the future and second overall pick carson wentz is hurt. no exact timetable for his return. he has a hairline fracture in his ribs. happened in the second to the last play thursday night when he was o hit on a blitz. a ct scan revealed the fracture. the team hopes to have him back by the end of the preseason. also today lane johnson spoke for the first time after it was reported that he is facing a 10 game suspension for peds. johnson expects the ban. he blames the positive test on a supplement he bought online. he says the supplement was approved on the player's union web site. this is not the first time for him he was suspended four

games in 2014 for using adderal. >> i've learned my lesson and i feel like the players have no rights. i feel something in the industry is not regulated so you do not know what's in it. it's hard to believe coming from a second time offender but i want that to be clear that the nfl pa does not stan up for players. they don't check the supplements and when you call them that you tested positive for something they approved it doesn't matter. >> jerad eickhoff will be on the mound for the phils. randy wolf will retire as a philly. last night rookie jake thompson made his citizens bank park debut. five innings gave up three runs and two hits and six strikeouts. the game was tied up in the fifth. bases loaded. ryan howard cleared them with this long homer to center field franchise record 14th grand slam. ryan has been on a tear lately. he's batting .462 with three homers and eight rbi's in his last eight games.

>> welcome back. young people learned what it's like to be a philadelphia police officer today. the fifth district hosted its first ever community day on ridge avenue in roxborough. "eyewitness news" was there for all the fun. some of the kids even got a chance to isn't it a police cruiser and check out all the equipment. the captain of the fifth district says this really is their way to build relationships with the community. also the academy of natural sciences is celebrating insects this weekend. "eyewitness news" at bug fest. we love bug fest, don't we? kids and parents will get a chance to see hundreds of live critters build a beehive also work on a giant termite mound.
