her minis here, the storm roared into florida as a, category one hurricane overnight bringing with it vicious wind and torrential rain, and it was the first hurricane to hit the sunshine state in more than a decade.

but as we move further inland her minute weakened in a tropical storm, and, the down tours left, communities under water in the golf coast. hermine could threaten your day at the beach as we kick off long holiday weekend. this is a live look, in ocean city, where the risk for dangerous rip currents, continue. and, good afternoon, i'm brooke thomas. aim joe hold men for jim donovan. we have new, information on the storm's track in the the last hour. lets get over to meteorologist katie fehlinger in the cbs-3 weather center. katie. >> national weather hurricane center got the systems updates its track and information and public advisories and all of that sweet of products every three hours. we have a new forecast track to show you. and it is a cone of uncertainty to go witt. lets start off as we take you out to the radar and satellite composite. three hour loop here. now system starts stringing itself out, still very heavy rain band but circulation, it is most confined across southeastern, georgia and now moving across the south

carolina state border and it is essentially moving straight north to northeast, here. and it is eventually going to be impacting our area. so let's walk you through this very up to date, track map here. the currently hermine still a tropical storm moving north east now, as we go in about 18 . it sped up by 4 miles an hour since last check. meanwhile here's the entire storm track. do you see how it starts to weaken as it gets closer to our area it looks like it will be a very close, hugging, near the coastline, of that track, and i will be fine tuning this, our whole team will be fine tuning this as we get closer but right now it looks like the shore sees the main impact and further inland you go the threat starts to lessen a bit more. other thing we're worth mentioning here notice it is from saturday up until wednesday. that is the system still lingering around. so it will be a prolonged event. right now though as we backup to the here and now it is gorgeous. upper 70's across the region. quick check of the regional

forecast rest of the day at least today is a great excuse to get outside with low humidity and comfortable warmth. one day is looking fantastic. but it starts to go downhill pretty quickly by tomorrow. much more on that later in the show. brooke, back to you. florida's governor says that a homeless man died when a tree felon his tent from winds whipped up by hermine. people in the carolinas are bracing for the effects of the storm. correspondent kenneth craig is in charleston south carolina with a look at the conditions there. >> reporter: waves flashed the bulkhead on charleston's waterfront while shop keepers san bagged storefronts ahead of tropical storm hermine. the storm made land fall overnight near florida panhandle as category one hurricane, the first for florida in more than a decade. 7-foot storm surge and several inches on have rain flooded streets, and down trees, knocked out power to more than 100,000 residents. >> we will spend coming days assessing the damage and responding to the communities

and florida families. >> reporter: hermine is bringing heavy rain and 60-mile an hour wind to georgia, and south carolina. >> we're taking this storm very seriously. >> reporter: charleston mayor john hecklandberg reminded residents that just because hermine is not a hurricane, it is still a threat. >> we are expecting serious wind, serious rainfall, and that can lead to flash flooding. >> reporter: here on charleston's waterfront hermine is more of a spectacle then a threat at least for now. >> we're enjoying it right now. not really pressured i guess. >> i love it. love it. >> i absolutely adore it. >> reporter: benjamin moore has lived here all of his life. he is taking this storm in stride. >> i'm afraid it will veer and go inward that is what it usually does. >> reporter: from here hermine is expected to stall off the coast of new jersey for labor day weekend. kenneth craig for cbs-3

"eyewitness news". now because of her mean airlines are changing charge fears. american, united, delta and southwest are using flexible, rebooking policies, forstrom affect passengers. jet blue, silver and spirit are also waving, any change fees. well, in our area many shore towns are prepping for what every hermine really may bring this holiday weekend. "eyewitness news" reporter alexandria hoff is live, in sea isle city this noon with more on that, hi, alex. >> reporter: hey, joe. katie mentioned earlier it is a beautiful day out here albeit windy and with some choppy seas, of course, threat of rip currents keeping life guards on their toes but the question remains, how close the storm will come to the coastline? but i think we know that the impact will be felt either way, the question is just how severe. right now we have captain tom willan with the sea isle police department and we want

to talk about emergency preparedness. because it is so beautiful out i almost feel it the is tougher for people to understand what is coming our way. >> it is the calm before the storm. we're getting everything lined up and preparing ourselves for what we expect to be a rain, wind event. unfortunately we have become comfortable dealing with those and we just want everybody to be prepared. >> reporter: do you think at this point, it is time for anyone to be considering other plans for the weekend. >> just like everybody we're asking everybody to monitor the weather, updates, and continue to just be ready, for any shifts this is storm or any change that they may come but to have a plan is the big thought. >> reporter: sure. we were talking before about flood prone zones and fact that these back bay areas if it does flood if not given the opportunity to recede that could be a tidal flooding issue. but you deal with that on the other end on the roadways. >> yes, one of our biggest hurdles when we're dealing with these storms during and after these events is the

campaign 2016 comes rolling through philadelphia, again, this time, the donald trump campaign comes to town. our anita oh is live in north philadelphia where some anti truck demonstrators, want their voices heard. anita, good afternoon. >> reporter: for the past hour protesters have been gathering here on north broad street ahead of the donald trump's expected visit with african-american community leaders. is there already a police presence here and a crowd forming, with a dozen protesters that you can see, and across the street that says slavery made america great and one of the organizers here tells me that is a dig at trump's campaign slogan make america great again. the republican presidential candidate is expect to land here in philadelphia, at 1:30 and make his way here to the view here on broad street shortly after donald trump is expect to meet with african-american community leaders for round table discussion for about 45 minutes. many protesters say they are frustrated with trump's comments about minority groups and say this is a peaceful

government power against drug price increases comes after the public outcry over increases for the epi-pen emergency allergy treatment. police say they are searching for the driver and involved in the deadly hit and run in mayfair. our own justin finch shows us that investigators have some clues and police have some advice for the hit and run driver. >> stretched along the 5800 block of frankford avenue a fatal hit and run investigation. fifteenth district officers pulled up about 12:45 this morning to find a badly injured biker lying in the road. amid the remains of the horrific wreck. >> this was a very violent crash, the bicycle that the victim was riding was broken in half and the victim's body was launched about 15th 50 feet north of where we believe the initial point of impact was. >> reporter: the four three-year old victim was

pope francis this weekend will declare mother teresa a saint. canonization hold special meaning for people in our area. about 60 from the philadelphia archdiocese are in rome for the mass. cbs correspondent jonathan vigliotti, reports. >> reporter: mother teresa touched the world with her mission to help the the poor, sick, and dying in india. >> the poor needs our love and compassion. they give us much more then we

give to them. >> reporter: she became a nun at 16 and two years later left her home in yugoslavia to work in the convent in india. she eventually opened up the first school in the slums of calcutta. mother teresa became one of the most recognizable faces of the 20th century for her care of both young and old. she was awarded the noble peace prize for her work in 1979. >> i'm grateful and i'm very happy to receive it, in the name of the hungry, of the naked, of the homeless. >> reporter: six years later president reagan honored her with the presidential medal of freedom calling her a hero of our time. >> mother teresa was busy, as usual, saving the world. >> reporter: sometimes called the saint of the gutters, mother teresa did have her critics, some say her missionaries of charity did not the do enough to provide relief to the dying and she was fiercely against abortion.

welcome back. tropical storm hermine is rolling toward carolinas after headaching land fall in florida overnight as a category one hurricane. it was a first time, 11 years florida had been directly hit the by a hurricane. authorities are attributing one fatality to the storm, a homeless man who died, when a tree felon his tent. >> this happened, you know, early this morning. we're in here, with the hurricanes, tropical storm. >> we have the update. we have downgraded from a tropical storm after it moved

on shore since it lost energy to the gulf of mexico. we are watching it move back out to sea. that is where we could see this upgrade briefly to a hurricane again. we will see what happens. regardless this is an evolving situation so we really advice that we are giving you latest on what we know right now. stick with us. we will see things change, evolve again as we continue modeling coming out and we will get ever closer. that is, of course as you get closer you can pinpoint things more easily. lets she you one more time storm scan three this nice live zoom and a system that started to string itself out here. a lot of heavy rain, significant just broad band of that soaking rain through carolinas and southeastern georgia. this continues to lift north east. as we mentioned earlier at 18 miles an hour. it has, in fact accelerated by a couple miles an hour. meanwhile right now we have tropical storm watches posted for southeastern, delaware, through lower bay and up and down new jersey coastline and

if your travels take you to long island, hamptons you will deal with tropical storm watches there as well right through the weekend. so that is the story, guys. again, this will be with us, really through the course of saturday, sunday and very likely into monday as well as we track the continued rain threat as well as the continued wind threat. the as we look at the toss built of the rain amounts here, before it is all said and done portions of florida and georgia as it pull as way could have have an inch and a half to two and a half inches. then they are in it for carolinas and through southeastern most delaware and, extreme south east new jersey. because it looks like this will just hug the coastline right now. so that means it could be multiple inches of rain, in a couple of choice communities, and the further in you go, you may end up with a couple of whimpy rain showers, philadelphia i'm talking to you and that is it and you end up with a crummy weekend but not like what you'll see at the shore. it will be a sharp cut off when it comes to wind, when it

comes to rain and those kinds of major impacts. stick with us. it will be able to be fine tuned county by county as we get closer to this. the sustain wind speeds, these look impressive. we will start off at 10:00 p.m. tonight as we watch the brunt up the coast. look at the eye that may form off of us, there. up we go to the del marva peninsula, southern new jersey where you could have a wind field that extend into portions of central delaware, southeastern new jersey and wind speeds could get as high as 40 or 50 miles an hour. brunt of this is off shore but if you are going near the the shore points, so again, this will be a big concern over the course of the weekend. it will certainly be breezy further inland but still just a chance we will end up with higher wind speeds in the city but they could peak as high as zero to 35 miles an hour perhaps. then by the time we hit tuesday, things are finally winding down with the worst at least of the win. you may not have any to report through southeastern, pennsylvania. so here's a good solid recap of what would be the worst case impact at the shore.

specifically. wind gusts could peak as high as 55. at worst case you could deal with half foot of rain, just rain, at the shore. so that will easily lead to flooding. and then high surf and that leads to coastal flooding to, and rip currents, beach erosion all of that continuing to be a theme. at least aim not seeing anyone in the water for folks at the shore outside beach patrol headquarters. lovely daze. watch for that rip current risk right now. things do go downhill, as we hit the weekend. stay there we will be right
