welcome back everyone. hurricane matthew slammed into haiti southwestern coast earlier this morning. residents are bracing themselves for the region's strongest storm in nearly a decade. life threatening floods, landslides and sustained winds of up to 145 miles an hour are expected to come with this category four storm. organizations are standing by to begin emergency relief. your heart certainly goes out to everyone down there. we have to watch and see what will happen here.
12:17 pm
>> we dodge this is going to really strike quite a bit of real estate over time. you mentione mentioned 145 miler that's incredibly strong for landfall. we'll sever stronger storms out in the open water for that to make landfall at that speed on that island in particular it's just so unfortunate. >> it really could be devastating. unfortunately i think we'll be seeing lot of very tragic looking pictures coming out of haiti in the days ahead here but this storm is obviously still on its track it's still got a lot of other places that it may strike or even just have a glancing blow to. we are one of them. let's get out there on talk a little bit statistical information we mentioned that wind at landfall. it was impressive. we've certainly seen stronger storms at landfall super typhoon out in the pacific that was strongest ever reported camille from 1969 here in the atlantic and struck with 190 miles an hour sustain winds but winston was you will there that heat figi, mer ran tee was recent near taiwan and matthew has now gone into the books here as one
12:18 pm
of the strongest win of the strongest rounds of wind at landfall that we've seen in the meantime here's matthew your eye gets drawn to it immediately now we also have another tropical storm in nicole. so this storm possibly becomes an issue for bermuda specifically. i don't think it's an issue for anyone else. we'll discuss in the minutes ahead here, but take look where the track goes. there's bermuda. it's essentially going to head that way. but then likely fizzle nearby. so hopefully it in fact does that. regardless we are mud today will be on stand by to see what happens. let's good become to matthew and talk about what the situation is over all with the atmosphere pattern here and why this system is making so many twists and turns. you have an area of high pressure trying to nudge in here right now despite the clouds but we are going to see some sun in the next couple of days from high pressure but it's blocking the overall flow. along comes a trough in the days ahead, and this storm matthew is trying to nudge right into it. so both of these pieces are basically going to help steer
12:19 pm
the storm. so the biggest thing to me is the speed of this jet stream. fit gets here with the right timing it could either, a, bring matthew a little closer to the coastline in the delaware valley or, actually help it make a right hand turn and go out to sea. so that's where the question marks really remain. but i still think in my own personal gut we're going to end up seeing a glancing blow from this. near the coastline especially. but again time will tell because it looks like it will likely be saturday night no sunday many days away. in the meantime storm scan at the local level you see the clouds nudged in here not the prettiest afternoon unfolding you can tell that also from our life neighborhood network shot here at pleasant valley middle and high schools. temperatures in the mid and upper 60s currently not going to tack too much on to that however with sunshine will possibly be a shower not enough to warrant the umbrella still worth mention. wednesday, thursday, friday all calm and clear. now maybe the time to start thinking about how you'd prepare if in fact we've got tropical activity this weekend but again the impacts from matthew would
