cbs3 "eyewitness news" at 11. beautiful sunday quickly turns stormy. rare late october storms come fast and furious with drenching rain. thunder and lightning. plus the rain fell hard in camden as well. some folks were caught without their umbrellas and had to scurry to find a dry spot as the skies just opened up. and look how quickly the day turned into night. time lapsed video was taken from the camera outside our cbs3 studios. the storm clouds were quickly rolling in. it was a stormy end to this weekend. good evening, every weren't u i'm natasha brown. thank you so much for joining us. storms were severe actually in some spots. meteorologist lauren casey has a storm report for us. plus a look ahead to that all important halloween forecast. layer ren, how doing. >> thanks, nat shaft i love that time lapsed so cool. yeah, though storms came roaring in so quickly. as soon as they came in, they were out of again and storm scan3 so quiet you can hear a opinion drop.

quite the difference from the thunder, the torrential rain and those gusty gusty winds that came through with association with some of those strong and even severe thunderstorms but right now the last of the showers moving offshore and even the cloud deck clearing out across the lehigh valley poconos and we'll continue to see gradual clearing throughout the overnight period the storm threat come to an end but we did see as i mention merchandise severe storms especially in around center city philadelphia and the surrounding suburbs. montgomery county, strong wind gusts brought down trees and wires in jenkintown, berwyn, pennsylvania, numerous trees down in chester county and that's because as these storms rolled through, they were producing wind gusts of 45 to 55 miles per hour. pennsauken 54-mile per hour wind gust reported at the airport 48 miles per hour. but tomorrow morning, getting you out the door on monday morning and a halloween morning, sunrise at 7:29. clear and chilly quite a difference you'll need that winter coat. 47 degrees and as we head into the 9:00 o'clock hour, a lot of sunshine around nice and crisp

49 degrees and looking good but going to feel much cooler by late day tomorrow. 56 degrees through 3:00 p.m. temperature as we head into the evening hours, all the ghosts and goblins coming out getting little chilly 50 degrees for the 7:00 o'clock hour then eventually falling down into the 40s so much cooler for our holiday as we kick off the month of no around the corner we'll warm things up again i'll have the details on that coming up. >> all right, lauren, thank you so much stay on top of trick or treat forecast download the free cbs philly weather app it's available on i tunes and google play. now to campaign 2016 news tonight. where the focus once again was on the discovery of new e-mails tied to hillary clinton. the fbi has obtained a warrant to review the e-mails found on the computer of clinton aid uma be a dean. clinton hit the campaign trail today in florida. meeting with early voters before holding a rally. she did not specifically mention the fbi bobby but did say there was a lot of noise and distract in the campaign. also donald trump campaigning in

new mexico right now. as he continues to hammer away at clinton on the investigation. trump stressed today that the only way to combat what he called clinton's corruption was to vote for him. a new cbs poll shows 70% of those questioned feel the e-mails will not sway the out come of this election. but just how accurate are those polls? "eyewitness news" reporter joe holden talked to political science expert to find out. >> reporter: you've heard a lot about them. every day another poll. dozens of them actuall actuallyg virtually every contest out there. donald trump has championed polls that show him on top. recent numbers have dramatically tightened with latest revelati revelations concerning clinton e-mails and fbi director james comey. >> his candidacy has completely sort of blown up what we have expected. >> reporter: we turn to polling expert in west chester university political science professor dr. john kennedy. that's right. john kennedy. so what's the wisdom in

examining polls and analyzing the results? >> you can never put too much stock in one particular poll. that's why you have to look at the aggregate the surveillance race. >> reporter: case in point a cbs news poll in pennsylvania showed clinton ahead of trump by eight points. nationwide, though, another story the numbers are much tighter. trump is ahead in an la times poll. clinton leads in handful of others. it's a tight horse race. the work of polling has also changed. cell phones and caller id have made it more difficult. the response rate believe it or not is a miserable 10%. >> so that means if you see a survey of about a thousand people in a state or a nation, you can assume they probably contacted about 10,000 people in order to achieve that sample. >> reporter: while on the topic of polls the allentown morning call conducted one regarding pennsylvania's red hot senate race. democrat challenger katie mcginty and incumbent republican pat toomey this poll shows both candidates are tied. in center city, joe holden, cbs3

"eyewitness news". we are down to the single digits now. just nine days until election day. stay with us for continuing coverage here on television and online at cbsphilly.com. now, septa and the transit union went back to back to negotiations today. back to the table both parties hope to avoid a strike on tuesday. if the workers do walk out it could mean major issues for some riders. "eyewitness news" reporter trang do has more on how a strike could affect commuters. >> reporter: the two sides returned to the bargaining table this afternoon and have been inside the sheraton for several hours now. mayor kenney he and other elected officials are monitoring the talks closely and will intervene only if asked. for the roughly 575,000 people who rely on septa every day, the looming possibility of a strike inches closer with no deal yet between transit workers and the agency a day before the deadli deadline. >> i'm aware, very aware of it,

because it will affect me. i will have to walk. >> reporter: if twu local 234 and septa do not reach an agreement by november 1st, city bus and trolley lines the market frankford el and broad street and broad ridge spur lines will come to a screeching halt. >> this is really going to be a tough situation for me because i don't have no other means of transportation. so i just hope they can figure everything out. >> we most city. we move the city. >> reporter: friday union members prepared sign force their morning 5700 members should a strike occur. union leaders say the biggest points of contention center around wages, pensions and health care costs. riders we spoke to were sympathetic. >> i understand. i'm a state worker myself. so i understand if they don't work it out. they have to do what they have to do. >> reporter: if local 234 does strike, regional rail already overcrowded will be the only mass transit available in the city. mayor jim kenney says he's hopeful it won't get to that point. >> we've been in this situation before, and either it's been one

day or avoided so hopefully we'll hope for the best. that's all you can do. >> reporter: septa released a service interruption plan if the strike does happen. we have a link to it on our website that's cbsphilly.com. several major employers in the city have offered up shuttle service to their employees that includes the city of philadelphia, penn and drexel. from center city, i'm drank do cbs3 "eyewitness news". well, thanks to a gas tax hike tuesday will be the final day of cheaper gas for drivers in the garden state on friday the average price of a gallon of gas $2.4. on tuesday a 23-cents a gallon tax hike will be in effect. lawmakers say the money raised from the hike will go towards funding the state's transportation projects. >> the infrastructure on the roads are so bad. they're deteriorating to such an extent in new jersey that if the money is dedicated to refurbishing that, i would feel okay about the price hike. >> well, those who oppose the

price tax hike the gas tax hike that is argue 23 cents a gallon increase could rise in the future if revenue targets are not met. police in south philadelphia meantime are investigating a car accident that caused a gas leak in south philly. "eyewitness news" here in the 1300 block of columbus boulevard where police say a car crashed into a building around 1:00 o'clock this afternoon. we're told the accident caused gas leak and pgw was called to the scene for repairs. and philadelphia police say a body was found in fairmount park earlier today. the body was discovered near 2400 reservoir drive. investigators say someone saw the body as they were passing by that area around 2:30 this afternoon. police are still trying to identify this person and establish a cause of death. one woman is dead after a fire rips through a northeast philly apartment building. investigators say the flames broke out about 6:00 o'clock this morning in the 2300 block of tremont street. we're told the woman was 61

years old. police have not identified her just yet. there's no word yet on the cause of the fire. now the most powerful earthquake in nearly four decades shoot italy today. 6.6 magnitude quake the latest tremor to rock the country it was centered in the mountains in central italy. cbs correspondent jonathan, has the latest on the damage. >> reporter: audio from surveillance video captured the rumbling of the powerful 6.6 earthquake as it hit central and southern italy early sunday morning. by day break, the damage from the strongest quake to hit the country in near the 36 years was visible. >> it's very sad day for my home country. >> reporter: in one of the hardest hit areas, historic cathedral and other buildings crumbled to the ground and roads were split in two. the destructive quake was also felt in rome where buildings rocked and chandeliers swayed. officials say after shocks are a major concern. a group of nuns ran for their

lives when their church began to shake. firefighters cleared debris from roads to allow emergency vehicles access to the injured. entire villages that were once popular tourist attractions are now piles of rubble. in the mountainous region plumes of dust billowed above trees camouflaging the devastation on the ground. italy is still recovering from an earthquake in august that killed nearly 300 people. there were no deaths from this latest quake. many people are afraid to go back indoors out of fear that there will be even more and possibly stronger after shocks. jonathan bigliotti for cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> motorist has quite the story to tell. she was rescued from the wreckage of her suv after the break how many days she was trapped inside her car after crashing into the woods. plus, trick or treating with a bit of a twist. safe alternative to going door to door but the little ghosts and goblins still get a lot of candy.

foundation seventh annual pink roses teal magnolia brunch. "eyewitness news" at the crown plaza in cherry hill, new jersey, earlier. there was a silent and a live auction. guests were able to bid on flyers tickets, lottery games and much more. there was even a health fair as well. "eyewitness news" also stopped by the pennsylvania convention center today where college admissions counselors hosted a free college fair. more than 400 colleges and universities were on hand to answer questions about searching and applying for schools. experts were also there to show students how to fill out their federal student aid applications as well. the night before halloween it is often mark with acts of vandalism and other crimes. it's known as mischief night. but in camden, new jersey, police and city leaders are trying to change all of that with a safe and fun alternative to mischief night. police say reaching out to kids at a young age can lead to important relationship building. >> we want to engage the

community, and make an impact and build trust with the community, and that's been our objective and so far we're achieving that with some challenges, however, we continue to just build trust with the neighbors and the kids. >> shortly before the event began a couple dozen people road by on quads, some made some obscene gesture at officers but ultimately police did not have to make any arrests. now the star of hope baptist church in northeast philly held their eighth annual community trunk or treat event today. the church says this is a safe and whole some alternative to door to door trick or treating. there was plenty of free candy and several other activities for all of the kids who came out as well. they had pretty snazzy costumes on as well. >> yeah. >> everybody all geared up. we'll have to have our coat on tomorrow night, lauren. >> yes. >> over our costumes. >> yes. >> we got to show the costume. >> show off the costume. briefly be able to show it and then bundle back up again. >> layer. a layer action. but. >> okay. >> today we did not need the

[ laughter ] >> i knew you were going say that. >> see what i did there? awesome shelf cloud rolling through right over the center city skyline. it was so cool captured this image if you see a shelf cloud it comes on the leading edge avenue strong potentially even severe thunderstorm. so if you see one of these coming your way, you want to head indoors asap it is genera generated by rail rain cooled air causes that sinking motion and cloud to form on the leading edge of the thunderstorm. these thunderstorms were certainly potent especially right around the philly metro area. that's when they were at their most intense you can see the time lapse. i put it back about six hours. you can see this line just racing across the area. it was moving at about 50 miles per hour. that's pretty quick for a storms forward pace you can see the line did weaken as it moved into parts of south jersey and now that line well offshore.

cloud deck started that clear on out. the cold front has moved through the delaware valley. high pressure will take control and quiet our weather down. but we did pick up some much needed rainfall. very quickly. yardley picking up almost an inch of rainfall. princeton over .80 of an inch over half an inch in plymouth meeting and berwyn where we had tree damage about half an inch of rainfall from these fast-moving storms but now all is quiet across center city philadelphia. temperatures are still mild for right now. 60 degrees winds have shifted from the south to the north. that will cher in cooler and drier air. we have a chillier night ahead so if you have those windows open, might want to close them before you head to bed. it will get cold to tonight. be witching halloween, cooler one but nice pleasant one in store. we kick temperatures once again as we head into november with more 70s in store and we had 80s today. 83 degrees the high temperature in reading. that was a record. 80 in atlantic city was record. we were 2 degrees shy of the record in philadelphia with a high temperature at 79 degrees. but we are seeing that cool down

especially north and west of the city. we're already in the middle 40s in the poconos. 54 degrees right now in allentown. also some freeze breezy conditions, breezy at times to contend with. with these northerly winds kicking up so that will add to that wind chill element especially early tomorrow morning. so overnight tonight a chilly breeze, 47 degrees. clearing skies and then for our monday, our halloween, mostly sunny, cooler and crisp with a high temperature around 58 degrees. and future weather going to confirm really not too much going on. continued clearing into the overnight period. no concerns for the monday morning commute as we head into the evening hours, for all the trick or treaters getting out there, nice, dry conditions but you'll probably need that winter coat across the region tomorrow, a chilly day in the poconos. but beautiful sunshine if you bundle up check out some of that fall foliage, 46 degrees the high temperature top at 56 down the shore. and temperatures consistent as far as highs tomorrow afternoon berks county, lehigh valley, up into the middle 50s on your seven day forecast, temperatures are not consistent at all. we're at 62 kicking off the
