report. >> 4000 police officers have been deployed. a police spokesman said their highest priority was to protect safety and to uphold people's right to protest. the leipzig offshoot says it expects around 40,000 supporters, but 19 counter demonstrations could attack get -- could attract 60,000 more. but honestly, i want to take a stand. you hear what they say, and you know the point made in leipzig or more radical than those made in dresden. i simply want to raise my voice against that. should understand that we are here and we havefor garbage like that -- people should understand. >> the march comes today's after a rally was canceled in dresden because of death threats against the founder of the movement. a selfie of him styled as hitler

has been picked up by german media and triggered outrage. he said the photo was intended as a joke but it has forced him to step down. the german government condemns the anti-islam movement. >> i have no intention of speaking with the organizers, and there are many good reasons for that. i find many aspects repugnant to put it mildly. >> the last mass demonstrations before the collapse of communism in east germany in 1989 were in leipzig. this is where the peaceful revolution began that led to the fall of the berlin wall. now opinions in the city are polarized and tensions are high. quick as we heard there, very tense situation in parts of leipzig. florian joins us from there now. we see some of the police behind you. what is the situation right now and our police expecting violence?

>> 20 minutes ago, it was very loud here because the supporters had started their march. they were about 1.5 hours delayed due to the fact that half of the city is basically block off. there are lots of police blockades in order to make sure that the pro-and anti-demonstrators are kept apart, so is very difficult to get to the starting point of the march. they have started walking down one of the major alleys here. the anti protesters were very loud. they said we don't want any of that here. the police have their hands full trying to get those two groups holding them apart. there have been minor incidents by left wing extremist

apparently incidents that involved clashes between the two groups, but also clashes just with the police. >> 48 hours ago, police forbid the same type of demonstration anti-islam protest in dresden just a number of kilometers away , also in the state of saxony. today it's as this even larger demonstration can go ahead. that is a contradiction. >> it's not really a contradiction because it was never about numbers. plus, it was the dresden local police that said we don't feel able to secure this march last monday, because there was an actual threat against the former leader, and the dresden police, obviously in accordance with the interior ministry of saxony, they said we cannot guarantee a

safe process, so they called it off. but there was a lot of criticism for that. i'm pretty sure the leipzig police at no point were considering calling this off. >> the organizer has resigned. is that going to affect this anti-islam movement? >> we will have to see. what is clear right now is that it is definitely a pr disaster especially on a day like this. this was supposed to be the high note, the climax of this movement so far. people had expected 40 to 50,000 people here. we are far away from that due to several reasons, but this is definitely a dance on this whole movement. >> we will be getting back to you throughout the evening. thanks very much.

>> french authorities say nearly 3000 people in the country could be involved in terrorism. >> two weeks after the paris attacks, the prime minister announced new counterterrorism laws that will make tapping suspect easier and give police better weapons. three of the men arrested in conjunction with those paris attacks may have supplied weapons to the killers. in tel aviv, 12 israelis have been stabbed in an attack on a bus. there are in serious condition. police are saying one was a 23-year-old palestinian man. he is said to have stabbed the driver first, then log the doors and turned on the passengers. he has been arrested. ukraine says it's call up of reservists will boost its military strength to a quarter

million soldiers as it continues its drive to put down the separatist rebellion in the east. with the cease-fire there in tatters, germany is looking to find ways to de-escalate the situation. >> the meeting comes against the backdrop of renewed fighting. ukraine says russia sending regular soldiers to support separatists in the east. >> organizing thousands of soldiers to be sent into the region. thousands of casualties hve been reported, including civilians. >> this is a pro-russian rebel convoy. fierce battles are raging here and around the other rebel stronghold don't. but the ukrainian government says is not just rebels doing the fighting. kiev maintains that almost 10,000 regular russian troops have been sent in secret to support them. on tuesday ukraine launched a

massive mobilization to call up more volunteers and reservists. >> the government has submitted to parliament to increase the size of the ukrainian army to 250,000. that's an increase of 68,000 troops. >> moscow denies it soldiers have entered eastern ukraine. russia's foreign minister said the rebels have agreed to withdraw heavy arms from a previously agreed demarcation line. >> as i've artie said, we will work towards an immediate cease-fire in ukraine. -- as i've already said. we will talk about it within the framework of the normative format. this is our top priority. quick the so-called normandy or tech consists of russia, ukraine, france, and germany. they have met in this format several times before but have so far failed to find a lasting

compromise. >> with crossover to simon who is standing by outside the villa where these talks are being held right now. the german foreign minister was due to make a statement. tell us more about that. >> the german foreign minister has just been speaking to the press in the last few minutes. he told us that he was hoping very much that the russian and ukrainian delegations have come here with the power and the will to constructively negotiate. he said that he would like of course to achieve a cease-fire. that's what everybody is hoping for because people are suffering in eastern ukraine. but beyond that, what the parties are hoping for, rather what the german government is particularly focusing on on here this evening is to keep lines of communication on -- open between

russia and ukraine and to obtain some sort of breakthrough if possible. but i have to say, the foreign minister did not sound very optimistic. it's hard to be optimistic even that president poroshenko again said today that there is nothing to negotiate in terms of territory in eastern ukraine. >> it's hard to be optimistic given the fact that there have been agreements already in the past. why are they not just being implemented? >> that's right, they are not being implemented because the fighting is continuing on the ground. france and germany have continued, and others have continued to insist that any agreement must be a political agreement, not the result of military action and that it should be on the basis of that agreement signed last september between the warring parties in minsk, which essentially said that heavy weapons should be pulled back from the contact line, the military line between

the two sides. he said again just now that that must be the basis of any agreement, so that's what everybody is working with. but we may be looking at a few hours of talks again here this evening. >> were certainly interested with the outcome of these talks later on. very much for this. >> crane was also high on the agenda at the 45th world economic forum in davos. >> the ukrainian president was also among those who addressed the delegates on opening day at the swiss resort. >> he returned home to deal with the escalating violence. before leaving davos he reeled off a list of demands detailing what he wants from russia and the rebels. >> cease-fire, close the border,
