stepped away from work for a minute. >> wow, west coast. i had graduations/birthday party with 30 18-year-olds. it was like herding chickens. very big one. >> like a day at the office, right? >> i'm so tired. i'm so glad to be here. i'm so glad i'm here! i wasn't sure how it was going to go. >> you survived. >> i survived herding massive, crazy chickens. so we're going to get to the weekend's developments and the presidential race in a moment. we got a lot of news for you. i just wonder, though, what you think of this zoo story. it's not really us but i asked you before the show started and you started talking. >> we all have kids that age. i will confess to have little object objectivity. i have a 4-year-old kid and i was a crappy enough mother that my kid ended up in the enclosure. i would want them to do what

they did. >> the cincinnati zoo is defending its actions. after a child fell into the animal's enclosure. i want to know how that happens. >> it happens because you have a 3-year-old. >> i do, too. everyone has to take some responsibility. i would take a little bit of responsibility. but i think they did the right thing. >> the zoo's director said the gorilla had to be shot so authorities could rescue the 3-year-old. this is obvious but now there's growing outrage over the incident. blake mccoy reports. >> reporter: outrage over an incident at the cincinnati zoo when a 3-year-old boy fell into the gorilla enclosure on saturday. for ten agonizing minutes onlookers watched including boy's mother who cried out to him. at one point the 420-male silver back named harambe grabbed the boy's ankle and dragged him through the water. zoo officials opened fire

killing the gorilla and rescuing the boy. zoo keepers defended their decision. >> naturally, we didn't take the shooting of harambe lightly. but that child's life was in danger. >> on social media a fire storm. people upset the gorilla was killed. many blame the boy's mother who runs a daycare center. an online petition urges she be charged with negligence. in a facebook post, the mother defended her herself. a subsequent statement thanked the zoo for its actions. >> being a gorilla and unfortunately it paid the ultimate price for something that was not his fault. >> reporter: zoo officials say a tranquilizer would have taken too long and enraged the gorilla more. they're trying to figure out how

the boy got in the enclosure. it's followed by four feet of vegetation before a 15-foot drop into a mote. harambe he harambe heard splashing and jumped in. a small vigil outside the zoo where organizers say something is being lost in the blame game. >> in the middle of this fighting, the victim is being forgotten. >> inside the zoo, flowers surround a gorilla statute as the exhibit remains closed. >> yeah, i think so, mika. >> no. i can't believe anyone is complaining that the gorilla had to be killed. i'm not sure why the enclosure involved something that a child could climb over with not another thing the child could not climb over -- >> yeah. >> everyone is blaming the mom. are you kidding me? you should not be able to get into a gorilla enclosure at the zoo. >> maybe the animal people see it differently. we're all parents. >> what would -- >> i'm not defending them!

i have a 4-year-old who can easily climb over something. >> this is not a story. >> it's horrifying. that the gorilla had to be shoot. the zoo has a protocol that if there's a human and a gorilla and something happens that's it. i hate that gorilla was killed. >> me too. >> a beautiful animal. and i hate the kid was able to get in. but anyone who has a 3 or 4-year-old you turn your head for two seconds they wander away. >> it's up to the zoo to keep kids out. >> agreed. >> agreed. >> no debate here. you're welcome. you're welcome. >> that reminds me -- >> no, i'm serious. >> do you see the lines on his face? >> how did luke olson get in there? oh, come on! >> all right. >> can i please get to politics? >> can't get away. >> on hillary clinton? >> yes. the interesting thing is that

bernie sanders match up from last week now trailing her 47 to 45. when it comes who voters think will win in november, clinton's lead over trump has been whittled down to one point. trump up four clinton down four. bernie sanders, by the way, leading trump by 12 in the head-to-head. and now trump won't debate him. he refuses. >> because it would be inappropriate. >> that's not true. >> inappropriate. >> what? >> donald trump? >> doesn't take a challenge. >> no he didn't say that. >> yes he did. >> i didn't watch the news. i don't have to. donald trump is afraid to debate bernie sand ers? >> i don't know about afraid. >> he said he would and then he said he was joking. he said he would welcome it. >> i saw jimmy kimmel. >> let me tell you what happened. >> he looked serious when he said it.

>> he won't debate second place guy. he believes hillary is in there for the wrong reason. >> based on the fact that the democratic office is totally rigged -- >> there you go. like wise, the networks want to make a killing on these events. a be bernie sanders didn't take the news well. >> what? >> i would have loved -- >> oh, i know. first, he said he would do it. then he said he wouldn't. then he said he would do it.

then he said he wouldn't do it. so i would hope that if he changed his mind four times in two days, change it a fifth time. you know, trump claims to be a tough guy, pushes people around. hey, donald, come on up. let's have a debate about the future of america. [ cheers and applause ] and i say to donald trump, you're a big macho guy. if you have any guts, come on down and let's debate! >> said it in north dakota when he clenched the nomination he stood before the group and said i would debate bernie sanders. we'll raise money for charity and bernie accepted. >> yeah. but apparently -- >> says he won't. >> he did elevate bernie sanders even more. to keep bernie around for awhile. keep in the center of the conversation for a few days. >> this is the art of the deal and he wants the networks to give up the proceeds for the

night to charities. >> i think he likes having hillary clinton getting crushed from both sides. >> yeah. >> and the presumptive nominee. >> he doesn't want to right now. maybe he'll change his mind. after all he's done he uses the word inappropriate. it would be abnormal. >> yeah. >> all right. on sunday weekly standard editor bill kristol teased there would be a third party joining the 2016 race tweeting out this -- why would he tweet that if it's not true? is it true? >> well, a real minute -- >> donald trump fired back an hour later. this preemptive strike.

trump went after kristol calling him a dummy. >> that'll do it. >> and warning if kristol did manage to get an independent candidate to run, republicans could, quote, say goodbye to the supreme court. trump continued to insult kristol while calling republicans to unify. kristol responded to trump's outbursttweeting. who has a bigger ego kristol or trump? >> all right. >> is bill kristol serious? >> trump campaign manager weighed in on the possibility of a third party candidate. >> third party run by any candidate is a complete disaster. you're handing over the white house to the democrats. which means four or five potential supreme court justices that hillary clinton would have a chance to appoint. if she does that you can say goodbye to the second amendment. if mitt romney decides he wants

to get in the race. number one, he's a faced candidate. number two, he failed twice. if he runs a third time, he'll fail again. he'll allow a democrat to appoint four or five supreme court justices that will be devastating long-term to our country. it's a failure. >> you know first of all, do we think kristol is going to be doing this? >> i think we don't know. i think that the notion that it would be a spoiler is not the case. we don't know what would happen. >> that's not the case. >> we have to explain -- because i've had conversation. you have to explain to people it's not now about a third party candidate that gets on 50 ballots. it's about something that kicks this to the house of representatives. >> right. >> i think it's the bridge that everyone that isn't following this minute by minute doesn't understand. you don't need to be on 50 ballots. so all the conversation around independent candidates has been about deadlines for ballot access. this is about a different

conversation and it is not too late. >> so you to stop the other ones to get to 270. >> to get enough electoral votes. if you get an electoral vote you get thrown into the house and suddenly if you're house members and voting for hillary clinton, donald trump, or mitt romney, you're going to have a lot of people in your party certainly a lot of your numbers for you if it's mitt romney to vote for mitt romney. and look what happened over the past two or three weeks. right. hillary had a terrible, terrible time with all the new fbi information coming out. the new e-mail information coming out. donald trump had some of his roughest two or three weeks over the past two or three weeks. their approval ratings keep going down. the poll last week had mitt sitting at 20%. and mitt got a lot of his votes from hillary supporters. there are a lot of democrats that don't want to vote for hillary. there are a lot of republicans

that don't want to vote for trump. this might be the time that a guy that is not all excitement. we've seen what excitement has gotten, as some people may say. let's go with a steady guy. mitt romney, you know, he started at 20%. he could do something here, if he decided to jump in. >> that's the model that mike murphy and other people have been talking about. go steal a couple of states. you don't have to get on the ballot all over the country and try to win the election outright. if you win ohio, let's say -- >> three or four states. >> you focus all your time and resources and energy you could pull those out enough that nobody gets the 270 and it goes to the house of representatives. you need that person. right. who is that person who can win states that are tough to win? >> who has a traditional reagan principles and confident and steady. >> i don't know who -- you're right. they have to find a person. maybe combine five or six people

and get the person. what states do you win with romney? i hear perot did well in '92. he didn't win an electoral vote because he didn't win a race. i think hillary clinton gets stronger and whether it's mitt romney or you pick mitt romney i don't know who it would be. >> i wasn't nailing him down but say it's romney and say it's trump. do we honestly believe that romney takes enough -- i'm asking you, do you believe he takes enough democratic votes in 5, 6, 2, 3 even just one or two states. >> he's 2535- -- i don't know hw low hillary clinton's numbers go. >> let's say it's romney or somebody else. the states you look at. utah is actually at the top of the list. >> one of trump's weakest states. >> an independent state. >> a state that republicans should win. >> states where they haven't won

but could win. you look at states where republican governors win and democratic states and you look at wisconsin. >> okay. >> you look at possibly michigan. you certainly would look at the upper midwest. you look at minnesota. you look at states like iowa. you look at states like oregon that have, like, sort of tough independent streaks. that's good places to start. i would suggest, too, a guy like mitt romney would look south. utah -- trump doesn't have support in utah because of the values voters. >> right. >> they gave him a good run for his money. i'm from the deep south. ted cruz that is a guy that ain't going to play statewide in the deep south. if mitt romney they knew how to hammer him in mississippi, arkansas, tennessee where real value voters. that's a place where you're hammering the right way your

support bleeds. trump bleeds into the low teens. you could. it just depends on who that candidate is. >> i don't disagree with any of the scenarios you mentioned. i don't see how this turns out not in favor of mrs. clinton. utah should be a republican state. wisconsin, michigan, oregon. you're right. if he's able to defeat her the plurality wins. >> you got to get to 270. >> if you win wisconsin, michigan, and oregon and you're mrs. clinton. >> no, win statewide. >> right but mrs. clinton. >> who does romney take votes from? >> from both. >> right. indi i understand but if mrs. clinton beats them she wins. >> right. >> i don't imagine democrats in wisconsin are saying am i going to vote for mitt romney or hillary clinton? >> a lot are saying i don't like hillary clinton. >> true. but once sanders exits the race and sanders, warren, and others are campaigning for hillary against -- >> sanders is going to campaign

for hillary? >> he's not pulling out a vice presidential slot. >> he's already said he does not want to see trump be elected president. i can find -- >> before he spent three months. it's not mathematically possible for sanders to be the nominee. he's been calling her things as nasty and damaging as trump has. so next week do you have credibility with the democratic base? >> fair enough. >> do you believe he's going to endorse donald trump? >> no. >> lths make it easy. >> it's not an outside shot. but the thing that is fun is -- i'm not saying it's not going to be romney. you look where romney's numbers are, he takes from hillary and trump. i would be surprised. if there is a candidate out there that has a little more of a populace streak or a tough populist run. >> who is it? >> i don't know. you can have somebody -- >> general. >> the upper midwest then you

yesterday. the most impressive video we saw from pete's, colorado. let me show you the tornado. this was over the top of that dirt road. that's why it had an amazing picture. it was literally like a vacuum sucking up all the dirt into the bottom of if. and it extended to the north up to the cloud base. pretty amazing stuff. one barn was destroyed. no injures. there's the final picture of that. what was left of bonnie is spinning off the south carolina coast. that's exiting, unless you're at martha's vineyard a dry day in new england. middle of the country dealing with strong storms on the border of kansas and oklahoma. a wet morning for much of minnesota. over the next three days the worst will be in texas once again. we'll see as much as 3 to 4 inches of rainfall across the state over the next three days. we have a lot of rivers in major to moderate flood stages. they'll stay high until we stop raining in the lone star state. another warm one today. probably one of the warmest all week up the east coast and the

crowd. >> are you saying not as many people because of donald trump? >> i'm saying they didn't bother. they're in town. they're wandering up-and-down the mall. a lot of them are right, you know, across the way at vietnam veteran's memorial and other places around that stretch of the mall. they didn't bother to drop by. they weren't that interested. >> a small crowd only by donald trump standards compared to his crucial crowd. >> right. he looked out and he look eed disappointed. >> yeah. he said he expected mlk-sized crow crowds. >> that's so wrong. >> you're making fun of the analogy. >> his analogy. >> it's so wrong on so many levels. you can't -- i mean, you know, come on. come on. >> and when eugene and joe say the same thing in unitson maybe we have a point. >> hillary clinton spent monday

marching in a memorial day parade. she's cancelling events in the northeast to return to california early for five straight days of campaigning. a sign of the rising stakes. she doesn't want to lose california. and while it's possible that she could secure enough delegates to shut the book on the nomination before polls even close there, bernie sanders is looking for a comeback. over the weekend, he spoke at event after event with thousands of people. here he is in oakland, in front of what police say was 11,000 people. but the biggest crowd wasn't his. sanders showed up at halftime as the golden state warriors sought a game seven come-from-behind victory against the oklahoma city thunder. he watched with danny glover. sanders did not wear the free yellow t-shirts that thousands of others did. when warriors won with con fetdy in the air he took it as a metaphor for his own campaign.

>> they're down three games and turned it around. >> wow. >> all right. so california, nicole, you're from california. talk about how important this is for bernie. like, even if he can't win, i think the clinton camp with as many losses as they've wracked up over the past month or two, they find a california loss pretty devastating. >> totally devastating! and i can't think of what the republican analogy would have been. i guess it would have been, umm, our guys staying in until the convention even though trump had it locked up. they would be getting slaughtered by the media. and you say anything bad about bernie attacking hillary and how he's doing real damage, which is evidence in the poll, not a personal opinion. you know, they go berserk. when you're leading a movement, when your supporters are that passionate, and you have a

chance of winning the biggest prize left in the calendar california how do you go away? and hillary four days after the last primary endorsed obama, i don't see it. i don't see sanders. you think on june 11th. >> he said he's not going to. >> we talked about it. bernie sanders is not running a political campaign. he's leading a movement not only to change the democratic party but to change america. if you win in california, very diverse saying he doesn't do well in diverse states. but if he wins the big prize. if he wins in california, mika, that movement continues to take off. and then you have -- >> a movement -- >> you have to consider bernie sanders as your vice president. >> a movement that is based on a message. which many argue hillary clinton had a hard time for two years we've been asking what is her message. and here now over the weekend is bernie sanders. >> hold on a second. if you're driving your car. i have more and more people tell us they're listening while they're driving in.

mika is holding up a "boston globe" and it talks about hillary clinton's slogan is hard to pin down. she doesn't know what her message is. willie geist, not a problem for bernie sanders. >> no. i mean, look, she still has 3 million plus votes. she's ahead fair and square. but if she loses california that becomes a problem. he said he's going to the convention. whatever happens in california he's going to the convention. if she's locked up the nomination, he continues in this fight, what does he want at that convention to do what hillary clinton supporters will hope he will do, which is to go away. he's a pest to them now. >> right. everybody is saying, you know, perhaps he can control the platform. who cares about that! you have millions of people following you. you have tens of thousands of people coming out. you have raised $180 million and $27 a pop.

you want something more. >> you have all that. >> you want to be vice president and you want to have a stake in the game and you want to have power over policy. >> you have all that and so you a message, and here he is hammering it home again. take a look. >> what the establishment always does, they do it today and they did it a hundred years ago, is to tell people that in real fundamental change isn't possible. they tell you to think small not big. well, like one of my opponents -- yes, that's true. now, i don't want to mention her name, but that's true. >> senator sanders has the right to run. no question. he ought to be able to read the sign posts as well as anybody else. and if he did that, he would know that it's all but over. i know the passion of a

campaign. i know when you're in it, and you just keep go, go, go until the last hours there. well, the last hour is close by. >> what do you think? >> if he loses california, i disagree. i think the call for him to get out of the race will grow unanimity. he had every right to run. you gave it all you had. the score board says one thing and you have to move on as much as you have raised the important issues. two, she has -- one can argue she's been weakened by him continuing to stay in the race because he continues to raise the issues. i think the corollary he keeps democrats excited. i don't see the democrats supporting or independents supporting him saying i'm going to support mitt romney or i'm going to support donald trump. i think at the end of the day, they'll come around to her because they understand issues he cares deeply about. she has the greatest chance.

>> number two, you're dreaming. number two -- >> i don't -- [ talking over each other ] >> i've seen conservatives win. bob dole won. john mccain won. when mitt romney won saying there's no way in hell -- tell me i'm going to vote for them. >> the donald trump is nominee, i think, if you take bernie sanders at his word. he's made clear he doesn't want to see a billionaire elected who claims he cares for middle class values. i happen to believe he will work on behalf of the democratic ticket. will they hug and kiss and have the kind of reunion that many want? maybe not. the warriors were favored to win this series. so the warriors in many ways are like hillary clinton. they came back and won the race. for him to compare himself to the warriors is slightly unfair. >> if she picks -- >> you seem passionate. >> if she pick s him as vice president everyone could be

take the polls seriously that say the race has tightened nationally, but when you look at the state polls, you still have this daunting electoral map that faces any republican candidate, and that really faces donald trump. and it's very difficult to see him put it together. not to say it can't possibly happen, but it's still stacked against him. >> yeah. over the weekend bernie sanders spoke at event after event with thousands of people in every audience. here he is in oakland. in front of what police say was 11,000 people. the biggest crowd wasn't his. he showed up at halftime as the golden state warriors sealed a game seven come from behind victory against the oklahoma city thunder. while the odds are long he can somehow win the nomination. in an interview with chris jansi jansing, he remained defiant. >> if you don't win california now, will you drop out?

from that. he's not ready to walk away from that. he doesn't think he has to. his supporters don't think he has to. they know the numbers, too. we sat down with a group of young women, because they're the ones that hillary clinton really needs to win over. right. he's winning by twice at what she has in terms of women under 29. it's unbelievable the support he has. my question was, but if he's not the nominee, could you support hillary clinton? could you go what would you do? >> bernie made it clear he's not giving up until the end. i'm going to stand with him. the race is still tight. it's not yet fully decided. it's looking really close now between hillary and bernie. >> you mean in california. >> in california. there's a chance overall in the whole race. >> he's been consistent in his messaging and throughout his political career to take the money out of politics. to really focus on the working

and middle class. and that really resonates with me. i know there's a lot of talk about polls and numbers and delegates. but for me i'm going to support the candidate most in line with my values and that's bernie. >> physical nominee is not bernie, though, hillary? >> i'm taking it one step at a time. >> if the nominee is not bernie, i have to do a reevaluation. >> donald trump? >> no. absolutely not. i'm a democrat, after all. and i'm not racist. so, you know, i mean, i would to reevaluate who i'm supporting that the particular juncture. i'm not there yet. it's a little bit presumptive to get to that point. >> right now bernie is a candidate running for president. when this moment of time right now i'm voting for that man. >> when people say to the two of you, you're hurting hillary clinton's chances to take the white house that she's now

having to divert attention she should be focussing on donald trump and put it toward. that's a poor argument. >> we're watching the republican party go up in flames. so to see, like, somehow there be a threat in the democratic party is kind of absurd at this point. >> this is a microcausam of what we're seeing in the polls, which is that young women, like everyone else, they don't believe that hillary clinton is trust worthy. they don't believe that what she says is necessarily what she's going to do. she has a real problem and better than any sanders could help bridge the gap but he's not there yet. there's no doubt about the fact -- he said to me donald trump is dangerous. he said to me on saturday. but in terms of making that leap and wholeheartedly going in and saying, all right, hillary clinton is our person. he's not there yet and you can see they aren't. >> wow. >> given the lead hillary clinton has now and the fact that probably next tuesday a week from today after california

and new jersey, she'll have enough delegates to be the nominee. don't you think the journey we heard from some of the young women will be what a lot bernie sanders has i'm with bernie. i'm not voting for donald trump. does that mean they stay home or vote for hillary clinton? >> you know, the thing is there's an in between. let's bring in chris isse eliza. there's an in between. you have people that stay at home. you have people that vote, and but then, actually, more extreme you have people that are going to vote and make phone calls. vote and canvass neighborhoods. vote and tell people in church. vote and tell people at their pta meetings. vote and go every they go handing out clinton/bernie stickers or whatever. it seems it's the biggest problem for hillary. if she wants to engage on

politics. >> what the establishment m always does. they do it today and a hundred years ago is to tell people in real fundamental change isn't possible. what they tell you to do is to think small not big. no, i don't want to mention her name, but that is true. >> nobody will have enough pledged delegates to win the democratic nomination. either secretary clinton or myself will be depending on super delegates. that's a fact. and i think, you know, there's some discussion that some meteor is going to say the campaign is over. she's the nominee on tuesday night after the votes come in from new jersey. that's not accurate. i don't think the dnc thinks that's accurate. their most important

responsibility is to make certain that the democratic party has the strongest candidate possible to defeat donald trump. i believe if you look at all of the polling done in the last two months. whether it's national polling, whether it's state polling, we not only defeat donald trump in virtually every instance but do better against him than does secretary clinton. >> are you worried that hillary clinton is going to lose to donald trump? >> am i worried? am i worried? what do you think i'm going crazy. why do you think i'm running all over the state of california doing three rallies a day? we're going have a letter going out to super delegates today or tomorrow, as soon as i'm finished with them, making that point. i'm scared to death. >> he's all over the place in california. the latest national nbc wall street journal poll shows sanders up 15 points. >> whoa! >> by comparison -- >> 54 to 39. bernie sanders over donald trump. maybe that's why donald doesn't want to debate bernie.

>> i wonder about that. >> but the nbc news political unit estimates her lead could be larger if sanders were not in it. as much as 8%. that, of course, you wonder if she has to recruit him somehow. and, chris, you say you're exhausted follow thing him around. >> he's killing me! a 74-year-old man and i can't keep up. no, he is -- you know, he feeds off the audience. >> but still. >> no. he keeps adding things. if i see one or two events on his calendar, i'm sending and e-mail saying what is he adding? >> wow. gene robinson, talk about other candidates that have done this. i know barack obama has done it. but beyond that, we don't have a lot of parallels between what is happening with bernie sanders right now, do we? >> well, it is fascinating what happened with bernie sanders. he's definitely started a

movement, and i guess it will cultivate that movement. it could have dramatic and long lasting impact, i think, on the democratic party. and a larger impact on the course of the nation. that said, what he hasn't done is getten enough votes to beat hillary clinton. she's gotten more votes. she's gotten more delegates. she has beat him fair and square. if he takes california she'll still be ahead. she'll probably wrap up, technically, the nomination. >> which underlining my point even in the face of this adversity his crowds grow bigger. the money keeps coming in. he's even more intense. what is the parallel for someone this late in the campaign and this position having all these crowds and all the money pouring in. the guy raised over $180 million by now. >> i can't think of an exact parallel in terms of the movement. you can look back to 2008 and hillary clinton did well in those late primaries. she gave as well as she got.

she gave better than she got, actually. in terms of against barack obama, but he had a lead that could not be surpassed. her lead over bernie sanders is greater than obama's lead was over her in 2008. so, you know, she did really well, i mean, for all the talk about how sort of kind of plodding and immediate of courser -- mediocre she is runni running for president. she does pretty well. she's done really well. >> the new reports that question the fitness of the trump campaign for the coming general election an associate press report says, quote, donald trump trails hillary clinton by months even years when it comes to digital campaigning. >> is that bad? does he have time to catch up? >> for instance, the clinton campaign brought on data analysts from obama's 2012 re-election and has been prepping for months.

while the trump campaign will have access to the rnc's data, it is also seen the exit of rick wily who promised a state-of-the-art campaign. earlier this month, trump said it's his rallies and personal appeal that will win him the white house, quote, i've always felt it was overrated. obama got the votes more so than his data processing machine. i think the same is true with me. and when it comes to staff size and, here is what trump campaign manager said. >> you have the mind set of hillary clinton where you have to have hundreds -- she's got 800 people on staff. we've got 70 people on staff. right. they think that bigger is better. we're very efficient. and what we've seen is success time and time again with a smaller and more efficient team. that's the way we would run the government. >> respectfully, it sounds less like a presidential campaign and more like "game of thrones." >> there is media hype. i can tell you this that paul and i have a fantastic

relationship. we work together very closely every day. we're making decisions together every day for not just his campaign but for the future of what we want to establish here. and it's very important to know, very important to know there is no sunlight between paul and i. every decision is made together. we talk 10, 12, 15 times a day. >> you talk about lean and mean, willie. it was corey and hope and a couple other people that won the republican nomination along with donald trump. that was it. you get to a general election and it's a massive undertaking. and that data collection that he's sort of smearing about that wins general elections. >> this is another example, i think, where the strategy from the primary is not transferable to a general election, which goes to a lot of fundraising the way they conducted themselves. he can fundraise his own campaign throughout most of the

primary. so they obviously -- this has been out there. they're light years behind the clinton campaign. hillary clinton has a fundraising network that goes back literally a generation. so this is one other area where he's going to be a little bit handicapped against hill. >> i think more than a little. the criticism of hillary clinton she's running a conventional campaign in an unconventional year. talk to anybody who worked on the obama campaign. talked to the people who raised almost $200 million online for bernie sanders. they will tell you the value of technical and what it's done. >> chris jansing and eugene robinson. thank you. the greatest that never was. bernie sanders and donald trump won't debate after all. why? i think they should! and now the democrat is the one coining nicknames. >> so i say to him, mr. macho, i am open to a debate any time, any place. >> and i say to donald trump,

a few shorts on the first. it took two ballots to win the vice presidential spot. the libertarian party selects each position separately. johnson's next task, securing a spot on the general election debate stage. something no third party candidate has done in nearly a quarter of a century. to do so, he will have to climb to 15% in the national polls, which the cut offset by the presidential debate commission. recent polling placed johnson around 10%. the party is likely to be the only third party option on the ballot in all 50 states this fall. however, the ticket believes they can appeal to both bernie sanders base as well as disaffected republicans. >> we seem to have some appeal to the millennial's, right now bernie sanders' base. i would think a bunch of republicans might view our brand of republicanism as palatable. the point is, we don't agree with other pet-- party. we don't agree with the

president. we see polls all the time and some are big leads and some are prohibitive. hillarys looked prohibitive. mccarthy went in and softened him to the point. >> and then the super delegates, by the way, gave it to hubert humphrey who never entered a primary. that's how he became the nominee and effect they were all super delegates. >> maybe a combination of two '68 races. maybe mccarthy meets bobby kennedy. bobby had the remarkable crowd. especially in california >>well, the peace cause got splintered won by kennedy entered the race. you have mccarthy and kennedy and kennedy gets assassinated. '68 was a crazy here. martin luther king also assassinated. >> right. >> four days after, i think, lbj got out of the race.

>> how does it end? >> oh, no. >> this seat, this seat is where i learned to stop predicting in this presidential cycle. there is video of me sitting in this seat saying when donald trump hit 12% in the polls saying to you, you don't think he's going to get any higher. i believe that's a direct quote. >> right. at least you admit it. >> and i think, like, a month later i did another prediction about, you know, trump collapsing on my show and then i just stopped. so how does it end? who is the next -- >> we'll let -- let's put trump to the side. if bernie sanders, if she gets the delegates she needs at the end of next tuesday night, he said he's going to the convention. he'll try to sway super delegates. they should consider the idea of last week. he brought all the things up. what does he want from her before he says, okay, the nomination is yours if he says that eventually.

>> i don't think there's anything much you can really give him. the truth of it is -- all the talk about what you get in platforms and stuff is not that important. you know, he -- i think he's waiting to see she gets it. he's watching the polls and everybody in washington wants to dismiss. the poll s bernie beats trump b a way out the margin of error. every clinton supporter says but those polls don't matter. and then they tell you every other poll you take matters. but those polls don't matter. the ones that show, you know, bernie beating him. and him and hillary in a tie. this is what super delegates are for. they're too save the party at the last minute from a possible mistake. meaning at something like -- >> look at that 54 to 39%. if you're a super delegate and in states like this it's probably smarter move taking the

bit of what it was like to campaign with mitt romney in a general election at some of these hillary clinton events. same size and same peach over and over again. same elected officials. as opposed to the bernie rallies where you have boundless enthusiasm. i think they clearly understand that her not doing well in california while at the end of the day the math is going to be on their side. it's a risk they don't want to have to take. and the other thing i'll say what you were talking about with democrats of the past, the other thing about these super delegates they are democrats. right. bernie sanders has been a democrat for, you know, five minutes compared to the clintons. there's a lot of loyalty built up there. so i don't know it's necessarily just the safe conventional choice. hillary clinton worked hard and for many years to get to this point and to have those officials on her side. >> cas kasie hunt you have the covered the stop trump campaign

and -- you are experts on the ill-fated movement. what and where is the overlap between the sanders movement and the trump movement and is it exaggerated or does it exist? >> i think that there is some overlap but it comes from trump supporters for the most part. from people who are activated and in this process because they're excited about donald trump, who, you know, weren't active necessarily before. bernie sanders supporters, and i think if you talk to clinton officials, they'll, you know, they've taken a dive deep into this data to try to figure this out fop try to find out what is exactly that overlap. how many points is she currently losing because bernie is in the race, et. cetera. they believe that almost all of those bernie voters that aren't with her now are going to come home to hillary clinton at the end of the day. and my experience, at bernie sanders rallies reflects that. it's hard to go to a bernie rally and find somebody who says i'm totally going to vote for

donald trump if it end up being hillary clinton versus donald trump. you get people who say i'm not voting at all. not much the other way around. you can't find bernie sanders supporters at trump events. >> if you look around the paper today. clinton's slogan hard to pin down. a lot of talk the new york times had a piece she's trying to find her footing and it's not going well. she can't find a slogan. she can't find a message. is this hand wringing in a democratic primary or a problem that can stick with her? >> in the general it's probably not very important. it's easy to be the anti-donald trump. he's going to hand her something every day she can be against. it's the price of being around presidential politics for decades. you end up collecting a whole

the department of veteran's affairs has faced plenty of criticism lately. now there are concerns that the integral watchdog responsible for keeping the agency in check is also failing the vets. according to usa "today" a senate investigation found systemic failures in the inspector skrrn's review of the veteran's affairs medical center in wisconsin. the watchdog is accused of discounting key evidence and witness testimony. the paper said the investigation also claim that's va inspector general has no standard for determining wrong doing. this comes as the nation honored american service-members who have lost their lives protecting their country, and as president obama spoke of the obligation that americans have to care for its veterans. meanwhile donald trump this morning expected to give more details on how he plans to doll out millions raised for veterans

at that january fund-raiser in iowa. the news comes after the trump campaign besiejed by reporter request that the evidence that the fund-raiser did in fact raise $6 million. why did it take trump four months to distribute the money raised. joining us now the reporter who broke the story wide open, the washington post david. >> i don't understand. he said he raised the $6 million. why is he taking so long to get the money out. >> did he raise $6 million? >> no. since then they said it's $4.5. maybe $5.5. it seems not to be $6 million. >> have they given any money out? >> yes. they have given away $4.1 million. money came from trump a few days ago. >> what was the delay in getting the money out? >> was there a delay. >> trump told you had had given the money old? >> trumps spoke person said he

veterans groups. what is the process? how long does it take? >> there's never been anything like this. where trump took the money and said to people when they gave money, you know, all your money goes directly to veterans. so the four month delay i wouldn't say that's unusual. the question is he gave a lot away when he groups picked out the beginning and gave them some of the money and they've been saying we're finding new groups to give to. the question will be were they finding new groups or they keeping the money and giving it to people they know. >> based on your reporting, do you suspect donald trump would have given the $1 million had you not been pestering? >> not at least when he gave it up. they told us they had given out the money when they hadn't. and it was only trump himself and the pressure we put on him that caused him to admit he hasn't given it. he gave it one fell swoop in the middle of the night. >> are you saying -- i mean. >> it's just reporting. >> i can't tell you he wouldn't

you have to explain that it's not now about a third party candidate that gets on 50 ballots. it's now about something that takes this to the house of representatives. this is the bridge that everyone that isn't following this minute by empminute doesn't understand. you don't need to be on 50 ballots. all the conversation has been about deadlines for ballot access. this is about a different conversation. and it is is not too late. and it's not -- >> you just have to stop the other ones to get 270. >> get enough electoral votes. >> if you don't get them to 270 and you get an electoral. if you are voting, you'll have a lot of people in your party, certainly a lot of your donors pressure you, if it's mitt romney, to vote for mitt romney. look at what's happened over the past two, three weeks. hillary has had a terrible, terrible time with all the new

fbi information coming out, the new e-mail information coming out. donald trump has had some of his roughest two or three weeks. their approval ratings keep going down. that poll last weekend had mitt at 20%? and mitt got a lot of his votes from hillary supporters. there are a lot of democrats that don't want to vote for hillary. there are a lot of republicans that don't want to vote for trump. this might be time that a guy that's not all excitement -- we've seen what excitement's gotten us, some people might say. let's go with like a steady guy that knows how to run things. romney started at 20%. he can do something here if he decided to jump in. >> that's the model that mike murphy and some others have been talking about. go steal a couple of states. you don't have to get on the ballot all over the country and try to win outright. if you win ohio or a handful and

focus all your time, resources and energy. pull those out enough that nobody gets to 270 and it goes to the house of representatives. you need that person. everyone is talking about we can pull this off. who is that person that can go in and win states that are tough to win. >> traditional reagan principles and someone competent and steady. >> i differ. they have to find a person. maybe combine five or six people n get that person. what states do you win with a romney? perot did well in '92. he didn't win an electoral vote because he didn't win a stat. once sanders gets out, you consolidate the democratic party. i think hillary clinton gets stronger. pick romney -- say it's romney and say it's trump, do we honestly believe that romney takes enough -- do you believe he takes enough democratic votes in five, six, two, three, even just one state or two states? i don't think so. i think a romney helps mrs. clinton. >> i don't know how low hillary

the same thing in unison on tv, maybe we have a point. >> okay. >> in other news, the battle for california is intensifying. >> hillary clinton spent monday in chappaqua marching in a memorial day parade. but she is canceling events in the northeast to return to california early for five straight days of campaigning. a sign of the rising stakes out west. she does not want to lose california. and while it's possible that she could secure enough delegates to shut the book on the nomination before polls even close there, bernie sanders is looking for a comeback. over the weekend, he spoke at event after event with thousands of people. here he is in oakland in front of what police say was 11,000 people. but the biggest crowd wasn't his. sanders show up at halftime as the golden state warriors saute game seven come-from-behind victory against the thupder. he watched with danny glover,

though sanders did not wear the free yellow t-shirts, thousands of others did. when the warriors won with confetti fluttering in the air, he took it as a metaphor for his own campaign. >> down three games to one. they turned it around. i think that is what our campaign is going to do as well. very good omen for our campaign. >> wow. >> so california, nicolle, you are from california. talk about how important this is for bernie. even if he can't win, i think the clinton camp with as many losses as they've wracked up over the last month or two. they'd find a california loss devastating. >> totally devastating. i can't think of what the republican analogy would have been. i guess it would have been our guy staying in until the convention even if trump had it locked up. they'd be getting slaughtered by the media. if you say anything bad about

bernie attacking hillary and how he's doing real damage, which is evidence in the poll, not a personal opinion, they go berserk. when you are leading a movement, when your suspecters are that passionate and when you have a chance of winning the biggest prize left on the calendar, california, how do you go away and fade into the night? and hillary endorsed obama four days after the primary. i don't see sanders -- >> he already said he's not going to. >> bernie sanders is not running a political campaign. >> he's leading a movement. >> he's leading a movement not only to change the democratic party but to change america. and if you win in california, very diverse state, he doesn't do especially well in diverse states, but if he wins the big prize, if he wins in california, mika, that movement continues to take off. and then you -- >> a movement. >> -- you have to consider bernie sanders as -- >> a movement that's based on a message which many argue hillary clinton has had a hard time.

for two years we've been asking what is her message. here over the weekend, bernie sanders -- >> hold on, mika. if you are driving in your car. more tell us they're listening. mika is holding a boston globe. hillary clinton's slogan is hard to pin down. she changes them all the time. fighting for us. she doesn't know what her message is. willie geist, not a problem for bernie sanders. >> no. look, she still has 3 million-plus more votes. won more states. she's ahead, fair and square. but if she loses california, that suddenly becomes a problem. he said he's going to the convention. whatever happens in california, he's going to the convention. if she's locked up the nomination, he continues in this fight, what does he want at that convention to do what hillary clinton supporters will hope he will do which is to just go away. he's a pest to them right now. what does he want from her to walk away? >> well, perhaps he can control the platform rules.

who cares about that. you have millions of people following you. you have tens of thousands of people coming out. you have raised $180 million at like $27 a pop. you want something more than rules. >> you have all that. >> you want to be vice president, and you want to have a stake in the game, and you want to have power over policy. >> you have all that, and you have a message. here he is hammering it home again. take a look. >> what the establishment always does, they do it today, and they did it 100 years ago is to tell people that real fundamental change isn't possible. what they tell you to do is to think small, not big. well, like one of my opponents, yes, that's true. no, i don't want to mention her name, but that's true. >> senator sanders has the right

to run, no question. he ought to be able to read the sign posts as well as anybody else. and if he did that, he would know that it's all but over. i know the passion of a campaign. i know when you're in it, and you just keep go, go, go until the last hours there. well, the last hour is close by. >> what do you think? >> if he loses california, i disagree. i think the call for him to get out of the race will grow. will be unanimity. you had every right to run. gave it all you had. the scoreboard says one thing and you have to move on as much as you've raised these important issues. two, one could argue she's been weakened by him continuing to stay in the race because he continues to raise these issues. a corollary could be that he keeps democrats excited. i don't see those independents who are supporting him saying i'm going to support mitt romney

or i'm going to support donald trump. i think at the end of the day they'll come around to her because they understand issues he cares most deeply about, she has the greatest opportunity -- >> you are just dreaming. >> i think -- i differ with you. >> i have seen conservatives when bob dole won. i've seen conservatives when john mccain won. conservatives when it was mitt romney saying, there's no way in hell -- tell me this november i'm going to vote for him. >> but donald trump is the nominee. if you take bernie sanders at his word, he's made clear he does not want tosy a billionaire ele elected. i happen to believe he will work on behalf of the democratic ticket. will they hug and kiss and have the kind of reunion many want? maybe not. the warriors were favored to win this series. the warriors in many ways are like hillary clinton. they came back and won the

long game" and joins us live on set. >> i want to ask you about donald trump. but first the title of the book "the long game." it's very funny. when i had talked to donald during the republican primary, i said, donald, you have the short game and the long game. you're acting like a day trader every day. play the long game. it's interesting. the title of your book. talk about it. >> the short game has never worked for me. i don't think it works for most people. the long game means you dig in. you suffer the inevitable setbacks. you don't give up and you keep pursuing the things you think are important. and that's been the story of my career. this is a book about my life and how it worked for me. instant gratification, typically in my judgment. >> but it's done all right, though, for the republican primary winner in 2016, though.

>> the voters this year were looking for something very different, right of center voters and left of center voters are also expressing themselves in a similar way. so -- but regardless of who we end up with in the white house, you were constrained by the constitution, by the system. >> can i just say, and i want to talk more about your book. but when i read people saying that we're going to turn into this fascist country and donald trump, if he wins is going to do this, that's and the other. i wonder if anybody has any sense of history at all. our system. barack obama thought he was going to do so many things. george w. bush. every president walks into office with this arrogance thinking i'm the smartest guy that's ever been here and the system always grinds him down. can you explain how james madison and hamilton were pretty smart guys and nobody is going to walk into washington, d.c., and take over. >> yeah, look.

you're absolutely right, joe. madison divided the power and nobody can do everything they want to. and every president is sobered by the reality. all kinds of impediments. in today's politics when people are legitimately unhappy, the average person is about $3,000 or $4,000 a year worse off today than when president obama came to office, you can understand the anxiety and the desire for a kind of quick turn around. what i think and the reason i don't have any trouble supporting donald trump is i don't want four more years justice like the last eight. n i don't want hillary clinton -- >> but isn't hillary clinton somebody who has played the long game? isn't she should be that like trent would come up and say hillary clinton is a joy to work for because she keeps her head down. she -- this is when she became a senator. and she is very respectful of

the institution and very respectful of those who were members of the institution. >> her philosophy was never centrist. >> right. and given where the dynamism is in the democratic party, there's no chance hillary clinton is going to be any different than barack obama. >> speaking of the long game, you had quite a long game reading this i learned for the first time that as a child you had polio and from there you went to be in a pretty darn good baseball player. talk about that and talk about your mother specifically fighting to make sure that you could walk and live the life of normal kid. >> it was a polio epidemic in 1944 all over the country. and it hit me. we lived in alabama. and it hit me at age 2 in the summer of '44. it's like a flu-like session you have. n when the flu goes away, you

are either recovered, dead or somewhere in between. it affected my left quadricep, the muscle between the knee and the thigh. we were 60 miles from warm springs, georgia. and my mother took me over to warm springs, and roosevelt had set up a polio treatment center there. they taught her how to do the physical therapy regimen. told her to do it four times a day and to watch me like a hawk and to try to keep me from walking. can you imagine a 2-year-old? so for two years between 2 and 4, she literally never took her eyes off me. i couldn't walk yet. my first memory in life was the last visit to warm springs. i was 4. they told my mother i was going to have a normal childhood. i wouldn't have to wear a brace. wouldn't have a limp.

and it was an early defining moment about digging in, working hard and overcoming adversity. so i ended up having a very normal childhood thanks to her and an early lesson in hard work paying off. >> i want to ask you about the republican party in 2004, which was the last summer where a convention launched a gop candidate to the presidency. we've obviously come up short in '08 and '12. and the party stood for things. you were an incredible partner to my old boss george w. bush. we stood for free trade and forward spread of democracy in the middle east, an economic policy. our nominee now stands strongly against all those things, and that's obviously where the base of our party is. how did we lose touch with the base of our party? >> well, i think donald trump is a phenomenon. >> really? you doin't think our party changed their views? >> i didn't change my views n i

don't think donald trump is going to change the republican party. >> you don't think he has? >> he's appealed to a lot of voters. he's the nominee. i don't have any problem supporting him because he's going to pick the next supreme court justice. i'm confident based on the list he put out this would be someone from my point of view with the right choice for the country. i don't think the republican party is going to change. what he is helping us do is reach out to voters that have not lately voted for republicans, and that could make him for competitive in november. >> what about the supreme court nominee that president obama has put out? >> well, if you look at the history of vacancies created in a presidential year, they don't get filled. >> what about him? >> that's the -- >> is he playing the long game supporting the nominee -- >> the issue is who should make the appointment. we're in the middle of a

presidential election. you'd have to go back 80 years to find the last time a vacancy created in a presidential year was filled. you'd have to go back to grover cleveland in 1888 to find the last time a vacancy created in a presidential year was confirmed by senate of the opposite party. you know that if the shoe were on the other foot, and this was a republican president making a nominee to a democratic senate, they wouldn't be confirmed in the middle of the senate. >> schumer said it, biden said it, reid said it. the point is this is not an issue upon which the senate has to ask permission from the president. we both have constitutional responsibilities. he gets to make a selection, and we get to decide whether to fill it. >> do you really? you have a choice the president has put out there that probably would not be -- appeals to both sides to an extent where you could say let's cut our losses and go with this. or you can wait for donald trump

to put out -- to go with a list that he has given you all. is there anything that he has done in this election so far, anything, that makes you believe he will stick to his word? >> yeah, well, first let me say -- >> what? >> it's not about garland. it's about who ought to make the appointment. second, if you want to talk about garland, barack obama called somebody a moderate doesn't make him a moderate. he or somebody just like him will be nominated if hillary clinton wins. >> if hillary clinton wins, then do republicans rush to try to get him because hillary's selection could be worse? >> i don't think from a conservative point of view, i don't think you could have a worse nominee than merrick garland. >> there's nothing about him that's moderate. barack obama calling somebody a moderate doesn't make them a moderate. people still call ginsburg and

breyer moderates. they're not. >> i'm sorry. >> donald trump has this list. what has he done and said so far in this campaign that leads you to believe he'll keep his word? >> he's put out a list of outstanding potential nominees for the supreme court. >> do you think he'll stick to it? >> i do. absolutely. >> and mika is saying, based on -- >> what do you know about him and -- >> i don't think there's any question. i've talked to him about this issue. i don't think there's any question that he'd nominate somebody on the list or somebody similar to the list. >> should paul ryan endorse donald trump? >> jewell to ask ryan about that. my view is trump has earned the nomination because he got the most votes. we need to be respectful of the electoral process that has produced this nominee. >> does trump help, let's say, in new hampshire. is it he help kelly ayotte in new hampshire? what are you saying to senators, because it will be different

what's in your wallet? 47 past the hour. joining us from outside trump tower in new york, nbc's hallie jackson. trump expected to make an announcement this morning. what do we expect? >> trump is expected to talk about the donations that have been made to veterans charities around the country after that fund-raiser at the end of january. remember when he skipped that republican debate and instead held a rally? he said he raised about $6 million for different veterans groups. up until now, there have been questions about where that money has gone. how much cash was really raised and where that money actually went. trump is promising to provide a full accounting of all of that at a press conference here at trump tower starting in a little bit. and as is the typical here on the streets of new york, you always get folks coming out. a couple of folks blowing some rams horns next to me.

you can probably hear it. we expect to see more protests outside of trump tower. some veterans groups on the democratic side, or at least lean progressive will be here talking about trump's treatment of vets. this press conference begins at 11:00 eastern time. also trump on twitter lashing out at the possibility of maybe an independent challenger. some sort of conservative candidate coming into the race even at this late stage. all of this sparked after bill crystal sent out that tweet promising some sort of independent conservative challenger that's has a strong game, a real chnance, he says. sources indicate a possibility within the week you could see an update on that side. the viability, it's such a long shot. almost more of a moon shot. but trump taking it a little seriously even after flirt with his own independent run after the primaries. >> hallie jackson, we'll be looking forward to your coverage. the stories driving the day on

time for biz before the bell. dom, you are watching verizon this morning. tell us why. >> i am. a big deal on that verizon strike where nearly 40,000 workers walked off the job. an agreement between two major unions and the telecom giant
