at this hour, the republican party is trying to douse the flames of the latest trump controversy that has set the political world ablaze. veterans groups are demanding trump apologize for criticizing the parents of a fallen muslim soldier. khizr khan and his wife who are speaking out against the republican nominee. just moments ooh trump helihis first rally since firing back at what he called vicious attacks from the khan family. but he steered clear of the controversy instead warning voters of a rigged election in november. it comes after obama addressed a group of disabled veterans making these comments about military family who lost loved ones. >> as commander in chief, i'm pretty tired some of folks trash talking america's military and troops. no one has given more for our freedom and our security than our gold star families. >> house speaker paul ryan and mitch mcconnell have both put

2:04 pm
make this right, if he were to apologize, for example? should he apologize? >> i think he should apologize. i would like to see a genuine apology from him with the realization of the hurt that he has caused. and this goes across party lines. i would never want to see any gold star family criticized for exercising their opinions on any sort of platform at all on either side of the parties. i would also like to see the leadership, the gop leadership come out and make stronger statements to and about mr. trump to repudiate what he has said. it was very unnecessary the way the mother of captain khan was insulted, and as a gold star mother, my friends and i who are

fellow gold star mothers, we absolutely abhor this type of tactic and going beyond the pale in this election cycle. >> let me follow up with you on that point. we have heard a number of the gop leadership, mitch mcconnell, paul ryan, come out with sistve strong words saying this is a hero we're talking about and this is not the way we speak to gold star families. are you saying that's not strong enough and more needs to be done? >> i believe what he says that captain khan was a hero, but he made no mention of mr. trump in that statement. and that is what i think myself and the people who are also gold star families are looking for. we would like to see this behavior recognized and chastised and stopped. it demeans our process.
2:06 pm
it demeans our election process. and it demeans the sacrifice of our soldiers and those that are serving now. >> is this actually disqualifying, do you think, as a voter? >> pardon me? >> is this disqualifying, do you think, that donald trump would make these statements? does this disqualify him, in your eyes? >> through my eyes, i would rather say that i think he is a long way from being a diplomatic leader at this point. i don't want to politicize this issue. to me, this is about a gold star family that was taken out into the media and mistreated by a political candidate for their own gain. fd and to me, that is what the real issue is and voters will have to

understand the death apth of th sacrifice. my advice for mr. trump is to meet with the families of the fallen. i point to george w. bush's statement today. he doesn't want to be involved in the race but put out a statement today that he prays for these families every day. that's the right response. >> i want to unpack your answer. there's a lot there. would you go so far as to call the comments un-american. >> i don't call any comments un-american. we have a wide and robust spectrum. they certainly were awful. i would not make them. i have rebuked them. i was here with alex witt yesterday. i said pretty much the same thing. the khans are american patriots. mr. khan is very eloquent on the set with chuck on sunday and very gracious to mr. trump. and he has to practice with the empathy and he ought to sit down with gold star families. >> do you have any indication baseod what you're seeing with mr. trump and the tweets he's putting out. that he would meet with them? >> it's my recommendation.

if i were him, i'd call up gary sin ise who is the bob hope of our generation and spends time with these families. i'd ask gary to come to my campaign and sit down and counsel me on how to do this. it's hard if you are a civilian like me. i married into a military family. i learned via my wife and her family how to deal with this. if you are a civilian, it's hard to learn how to deal with it. sometimes you don't know how to do it. he began in his interview with george stephanopoulos to start off the right way n then veered off course and dug deeper. it should stop. >> you raised the example of former president george w. bush who a lot of folks have talked about today in terms of how this situation should be handled. president obama. both of them criticized by veterans families, gold star families. when you make an enemy and wage a war in this way with a gold star family, can you be commander in chief if you don't understand that unwritten role? >> george w. bush had a

t pat toomey. captain khan is a hero. you have people put in a tough position of figure out how to respond to donald trump. >> let me draw the line between gold star families and politics. i have worked for years. goals star families are different. i want to put them over my assessment of the politics has nothing to do with how i believe they ought to be treated. on the political side, donald trump's running a volatile campaign. he is counting on the vandals overrunning rome. he's counting on massive turnout, previous that have not previously voted, winning pennsylvania and ohio and people that feel left out, disappointed, disengaged. i do not believe this episode or any one episode that does not involve race would cost him the election. the judge curiel comments were the ones where i thought republicans were about ready to abandon him in droves. he's moderating. he's a learning machine, learning how to navigate politics. i don't think this will have a lasting impact on the election.
2:14 pm
it ought to have a lasting impact on how america treats gold star families. >> what about down ballot races. i understand donald trump. you don't think it's going to hurt these down ballot races? >> if those candidates treat gold star families with respect, and they all have. john mccain's statement was the hardest hitting of them all. kelly ayotte has been a force for great good on the armed services committee for soldiers, sailors, are amen and marines as is rob portman. i don't think it will have an impact on them. but every one of them, and most of them already have, learned how to talk to gold star families. >> i want to read you from your column over the weekend of donald trump. he has many flaws and some strengths but he isn't a racist or dangerous demagogue a mussolini. i guess my question would be what proof do you have for all of that, and is there anything he could say that would make you say, you know what, i'm not

wikileaks and wikileaks nor the russians will ever tell us but nobody else has said they've done that. that's the circumstantial part of it. in terms of policy, it's very clear to me that mr. putin and the kremlin would prefer mr. trump for very rational reason. mr. trump says things that the russians like. he says things like we should reconsider whether crimea should be recognized as part of russia. he says things like we should reconsider our relationship with our allies. he says things like russia is not in ukraine. most surprising thing he said recently about foreign policy yesterday. those are all things the kremlin supports so, of course, they want to see trump as the next president of the united states. >> since you raised some of his recent controversial comments, ambassador mcfaul, let me read you some of trump's latest tweets trying to walk some of that back. one of them reads, when i said
2:43 pm
in an interview that putin is not going into ukraine you can mark it down. i'm saying if i am president. already in crimea. so clearly trying to walk back that first statement where he seemed to muddle that. so with all the obama tough talk on russia and ukraine, they've already taken crimea and continue to push. that's what i said. so he's trying to turn this around, trying to walk it back. do you buy it? >> well, that's not what he did say. he didn't add that dependent clause, if i were president. and that's -- maybe everybody makes mistakes. if he wants to clean it up and say he has no intention of recognizing crimea as part of russia, that would be fantastic. he has no intention of relitigating our relationships to our nato allies. that would be fantastic. but there's a deeper problem. when you're president of the united states, you don't get to say one thing that has giant implications for our national
2:44 pm
security and then say, oh, i really didn't mean it. i'm glad he's cleaning up the record but i also think it underscores just how either how little he knows about foreign policy or how sloppy he is about it when he's talking about it. let's not forget he's also the guy that encouraged the russians to conduct espionage against the united states of america. >> i want to just finally ask you about this issue of the republican party's platform. trump's campaign manager paul manafort was pressed about this over the weekend and whether or not he had any influence over shaping the platform which ultimately saw softer language in terms of sending weapons to ukraine. he was very adamant. he had no influence and said no one in the trump campaign had any influence. some have said that's not quite accurate. what is your take, and do you take him at face value that the trump campaign didn't have any impact over the party's platform. >> let me be honest. i have no special knowledge
2:45 pm
about the deliberations over the republican party platform. all i would say is this. for years now, it has been a position of most prominent republicans in the congress to advocate for lethal assistance to ukraine. ando obama administration has resisted that. and now that they've changed that, that's a major policy change with respect to the republican party and mr. trump. >> all right. just finally very quickly, does the clinton campaign, obviously secretary clinton has been criticized for some of her decision-making while she was secretary of state. donald trump has jumped on a number of different points, benghazi, for example. does she run the risk of using this against him and opening up those old wounds, if you will? >> you know, my own view as an american voter and national security expert is, let's debate the policies today. let's debate what we're going to do about the russians and then
2:46 pm
the voters can decide, do they want a president that adopts a lot of views the kremlin is advocating or do they want a president that is going to stand up to the kremlin. that's the issue at the end of the day. not what happened several years ago. >> michael mcfaul, thank you for your insights. we really appreciate it. >> thank you. as we wait for hillary clinton to take the stage in omaha, questions about her private e-mail server continue to follow her on the campaign trail. find out why her latest claim is being flagged by fact checker. stay tuned for that. it's not a banner that goes on a wall. it's not something you do now and then. or when it's convenient. it's using state-of-the-art simulators to better prepare for any situation. it's giving offshore teams onshore support. and it's empowering anyone to stop a job if something doesn't seem right. at bp, safety is never being satisfied. and always working to be better.

reconnect with the life you've been missing. americans are buying more and more of everything online. and so many businesses rely on the united states postal service to get it there. that's why we make more ecommerce deliveries to homes than anyone else in the country. the united states postal service. priority: you director comey said that my answers were truthful and what i've said is consistent with what i have told the american people, that there were decisions discussed and made to classify retroactively certain of the e-mails. >> hillary clinton talking about the controversy that continues to overshadow her campaign, her use of a private e-mail server. we want to take you live on omaha, nebraska, where hillary
2:51 pm
clinton is just taking the stage. what you just heard was clinton's interview with fox news, where she claimed fbi director james comey backed up her public statements that she did not send anything marked classified at the time from her private e-mail server. "the washington post" fact checker gave that claim four pinocchios. comey said some e-mails were already classified when they were sent. let's bring in the panel once again. thanks to all of you for being here. let's start with this e-mail controversy. it doesn't go away. this weekend she got four pinocchios. why not just apologize, i made a mistake which she has said but she always does this sort of trying to turn the page to explain it away. >> it's been just this lingering scab that won't heal and that keeps on getting worse and she keeps putting her foot in it. it's just, it's inexplicable that at this point in the campaign she just keeps digging
2:52 pm
the hole deeper. i think she will say it was a mistake and i wouldn't do it again, but then she has to say something to defend herself and that something just has this unfortunate tendency to go a shade too far. >> several pinocchios too far. >> this is the one issue i think that continues to feed voters' lack of trust in her which is her biggest issue. >> you know, with donald trump, i think people look at him, people who don't trust him look at him and think there's something mental going on. they don't know is he a little bit crazy. hillary clinton truly cannot open her mouth about an issue people don't trust her about and sound like she is calculating in her head there's no craziness going on, she knows exactly what she's doing, she cannot open her mouth without lying. and giving the impression to people she thinks she can outsmart them and she can't. >> she always sounds like a lawyer which is not a good thing for americans. talk about if donald trump hadn't gotten into this dispute with the khan family, how much attention would she have gotten
2:53 pm
for her answers on fox news sunday? there would have been a lot of focus on whether she had told the truth, whether she was honest and trustworthy. instead, the big story coming out of the sunday shows was about that dispute. >> it's opportunity caused on both sides because the democrats have had an extremely successful convention which i'm not sure that hillary clinton was humanized enough to get everyone to vote for her, but it wasn't the crooked hillary, we didn't hear about e-mails. we heard about her lining chelsea's drawers at stanford because she's super mom. all of a sudden she reminds us, reminds voters of why they have concerns. >> we do know she did get a small bounce so far out of the conventions. it's not labor day yet, though. what do you make of this polling? >> i think she got a bounce out of the convention because it was a very well-run convention, unlike with donald trump. hillary clinton actually had
2:54 pm
people outside her immediate family members and her powerful political associates who could testify she had done a nice thing for them, which was to her great credit. and i think come november, however bad republicans might think it's going to be, it's going to be worse. >> i'm being told by my producer that warren buffett just challenged trump to a dual release of their tax returns. what do you make of that? talk about this strategy of secretary clinton campaigning wi warren buffett? >> i can pretty much guarantee trump wouldn't take the challenge. >> wouldn't it be great. >> warren buffett, huge standing in the business community, traditionally republican. why is she in omaha, nebraska? because it's one of two states that distributes electoral votes so there's a chance for getting one electoral vote in this omaha district and that tells you that while some people think this will be a blowout, the clinton campaign is preparing for this to be close enough that one electoral vote from omaha, nebraska might make the
2:55 pm
difference. >> can i say one thing about warren buffett's tax returns? even without him releasing them which i would be delighted to see, we know something about his tax rate. he's told us he pays at a lower effective tax rate than his secretary. why can't donald trump tell us if he's not going to release them what his effective tax rate is? there's a challenge. >> they are both under audit. we know donald trump will get plenty of questions about this during the debates and is making a big issue of these debates. two of them fall on the same night as nfl football games. he's saying i'm going to talk to the commissioner, try to get the dates changed. is that realistic? has that ever happened before? >> trump is making a controversy to further his point the system is rigged, the powerful people, not him, of course, are conspiring to prevent americans from seeing the debate. i think in the end the trump campaign and clinton campaign will end up negotiating the dates of the debates. who knows when those will be. in the end the campaigns will decide. >> they are not committed to the debates. the party has negotiated them but that doesn't mean you can force a candidate to be there.
2:56 pm
i assume trump is starting a negotiating process where maybe we don't end up with two debates. maybe we will end up with one like we had in 1980. >> that would be too bad. >> ladies, great conversation. thank you so much for being here. lot of fun. that does it for "mtp daily." we'll be right back. ures with toothpaste or plain water. and even though their dentures look clean, in reality they're not. if a denture were to be put under a microscope, we can see all the bacteria that still exists on the denture, and that bacteria multiplies very rapidly. that's why dentists recommend cleaning with polident everyday. polident's unique micro clean formula works in just 3 minutes, killing 99.99% of odor causing bacteria. for a cleaner, fresher, brighter denture every day.
