that will do it for this hour. mtp daily starts right now. if it's tuesday, we will take you in the trump campaign as the nominee launches a series of attacks against fellow republicans. tonight donald trump strikes back in the gop civil war with swift retaliation against speaker paul ryan. plus new details on the drip, drip, drip e-mail scandal and why republicans have noplace to hide. this is mtp daily and it starts right now. good tuesday evening. i'm peter alexander in washington, d.c. for my friend, chuck todd. donald trump said the shackle ares off as he targets his party
2:01 pm
in a vintage trump tweet storm. we have brand-new polls post debate. these are the new numbers as well as the republican party that is tearing itself apart. trump and house speaker paul ryan. the republican party. moments ago, kelly o'donnell and they spoke with the running mate and took at shot at speaker ryan. at least seemed to acknowledge a party in turmoil. >> paul ryan is my friend, but i respectfully disagree with his focus in this campaign. i think we should let trump be trump. >> is the party in crisis? >> i think the country is in a lot of trouble. >> but republicans are fighting republicans. >> i don't find myself thinking about party right now. >> here's what makes trump's tweet storm and pence's knock on ryan so puzzling. it appears to have slop stopped the bleeding and trump is
2:02 pm
turning on his party. according to the news survey monkey, voters say clinton won, but that was an improvement from the first debate that he lost by 31 points. a purnl poll is new in the field yesterday. after the debate has trump down points against clinton in a-way matchup. trump was down 11 points before the debate. it's the same story and the two-way race. he is down seven. that again is a big improvement. he was down 14 points before sent night's debate. these numbers come from a smaller sample than usual because they were only there for a single day. the top lead is nine points. that's over the course of the three days. they seem to confirm the initial take away. trump lost, but won big by going nuclear on clinton.
2:03 pm
then the tweet storm against his party. despite winning the second debate in a land slight, every poll, it's hard to do when paul ryan and others gives zero support. he lost all polls we have seen. then the floodgates open again and paul ryan had a bad conference call where the members went wild at disloyal disloyaltidisloyalt disloyalties. they are far more difficult than crooked hillary. they come at you from all sides. they don't know how to win. i will teach them. and then this. with the exception of cheating out of the dems, they have proven to be far more loyal than the republicans. we will have more on that later. this appearing to be pent up anger for truchg. it is so nice that the shackles have been taken off me and i can fight for america the way i want to. paul ryan fired back in a
2:04 pm
sharply written reduke. paul ryan is focusing on defeating democrats and all republicans running for office should probably do the same. let's bring in the panel. april ryan has american urban radio network. michael steel with the press secretary for the former press secretary. the president and ceo of latino and msnbc contributor. nice to see all of you with us. right off the bat, donald trump staunched the bleeding as it were. it was a better base that was satisfied. and the new poll said basically, republicans should stick with this guy. we like this guy. why is he going after them in this way and effectively increasing the fut within the party? >> if donald trump loses to hillary clinton, it's because donald trump lost. the establishment republicans were not anything else.
2:05 pm
he lost an utterly winnable race. >> the message should be good change. he clearly hasn't put a good messenger for that, but he needs a base and you need republicans in general and more than just the republicans. >> this tweet storm with the coordination are a major scandal and instead we are talking about trump tower and magic thumbs. >> i think part is it demonstrates the fact that he is not a polished republican. he needs to expand with women and instead of going after that, he is preparing his next stage. what am i going to do after the election? we are starting to see that his team knows they lost. it's more like what am i going to do now and i recognize that i'm going to give hillary
2:06 pm
clinton a presidency a heck of a hard time. >> this paradox, there are career-ending consequences no matter which way the villains and vulnerable republicans and house and senate go. if you stick with trump, you may hear about it. if you break with trump and the base, how is paul ryan handling this? >>. >> the tell tale sign of how paul ryan is handling this which is very good is the fact that how many candidates did donald trump rally with? how many do you rally with in his time in the primary and when he came the nominee? that is telling you something right there. this was a term that maybe i can swallow kind of thing, but paul ryan understands he can't salvage this and he is his own worst enemy and they tried to help him save himself, but that has not work and he is trying to save the ship and democrats are feeling they have a chance to win a lot of house and senate
2:07 pm
seats. this is going against all tradition. >> and this is behind closed doors. what he is trying to do is not to make sure there is encroachment. >> that's his job. >> how long can ryan stick with trump in this situation? his integrity is on the line. we pulled this up. he withdraw his support in 2012 after commends were made about women. some girls, they rape so easy. in that situation, paul ryan said i'm not going stick with this guy. these k34e7b9s are different, but he was condoning or saying he had been involved in sexual assaults. how low can you go? >> i think the speaker is reserving the right to do more than what he feels is appropriate. he is focused as he should be entirely on doing what's right for his members. trump is very popular and there

are members that endorsed him enthusiastically. there are others who are uncomfortable and what they need to do is run their own campaigns and the campaigns that are right for their district and do what is determined by their conference. >> that rallies the base and made made what is appreciated and goes after hillary clinton. they come out with a new ad. here's part of it. >> hillary clinton failed every single time as secretary of state. now she wants to be president. hillary clinton doesn't have the fortitude, strength or stamina to lead in our world. she failed as secretary of state. don't let her fail us again. >> highlighting moments where she was coughing and stumbling at the 9/11 memorial or she appears weak. he said this is about stamia na?
2:09 pm
effective or not? >> i will say this. for those who hate hillary clinton who knows a lot of his base have a dislike for her, that will work. at the last debate and the first, that was not the hillary clinton. we didn't see her with the glasses and trying to stable herself. she is a strong woman. stability is an issue when it comes to her health or his health, but that's not who we saw. i think this video for those who dislike her will ring true, but for others it rings hollow. >> what he needed on the last two debates and before the sdandal was to apologize and two, get republican women to vote for him. that said she is a working woman. you are going after her for that and being human. it's hard.
2:10 pm
she has a record whether it's e-mails or repeated failures of judgment and a pretty anemic record as the senator from new york. there is no need to go into this area that she is suffering secret low from a debilitating illness. >> when you come to the e-mails and donald trump brings that up. that's against the law. people are not talking about this. >> it used to be a republican and you guys respect him very much and he even found there was nothing wrong with what he did. the fact that she mishandled the e-mail. >> it was a serious error in judgment as everyone acknowledges and the revelations involve the clinton campaign coordinating with the obama justice department. >> how much of that is russia?
2:11 pm
>> you guys stay with us. thanks to you. i want to go to steve king of iowa who is joining us. thanks for being with us. >> thanks for having me on. >> help us understand the trump strategy. he scored up the base by going after hillary clinton and did it well. a lot of people agree. he was strong again. why start a war with his own party? >> i would say that whether he started a war with his own party and looked to me -- >> why continue a war with them? >> he has that happen when he is not done with the battle he finishes and moves on. it takes him a day or two to get that done. he started it and he needed to be on that stage and needed to have a good performance and he did. it's a unanimous decision over hillary clinton, but he lost the bounce he should have had when
2:12 pm
the conference call came in. they learned or speaker was not going to campaign for donald trump nor defend him. >> it took away his bounce. did you think your speaker is a weak and effective leader as donald trump said? >> i wouldn't go so far as to say that. paul ryan's intentions are good. my relationship with him has been good. i think this was a wrong move to make and it divides the party instead of unifies it and almost sacrifices the presidency and he has to rebuild in the four weeks that are left. >> do you think donald trump is wrong in calling him weak and ineffective? >> what it means is i have a good relationship with paul ryan and i want to keep it and ex-panot it. if i disagree, he respects me and i respect him and we ought to be able to say what we think. >> will you vote for paul ryan as the new speaker in the new
2:13 pm
session? >> i don't know the answer to that at this point. we will have to see how the election plays out and what might be happening. again, i'm not working against paul ryan. i have been supportive of him. he serves up a difficult task and now he needs to chart his own course. this is no longer the course that john boehner started for him. >> par scold some for distancing themselves from trump. is there nothing that trump could say or do that would cost him your support? >> the same question applies to the supporters of hillary clinton. i don't know what he might have said that will show up on the tape. i know this. what came out in that audio tape, but it's pictures with an audio tape. that is not nearly as bad as what we have seen from the clintons over decades. actions verdict words, it is an easy decision. we have a constitution to protect. >> just because of that, why does it matter that it was just
2:14 pm
audio and we didn't see his face saying it? >> he doesn't dispute it and i don't either, but for example, there is no videotape of hillary clinton being interviewed. there is no audio tape and no tribute. there are sketchy notes. that's a lot bigger deal and we should not let the nation be caught up in a statement that no one will defend versus the actionings of the violations that are clear that hillary clinton submitted. >> don't why so many colleagues are fleeing donald trump and the behavior and past talk of grabbing women with sexual assault even though he said he never sexually assaulted anybody? >> i understand that some of them want to save themselves and distance themselves and they think if they do that, they are more likely to be reelected and have a stronger majority in the house and hole majority in the senate. i need to remind them that they

are joined at the hip with our nominee. as his numbers go down, their numbers go down. they can go together than we are to be divided. republicans decided that they want donald trump as their quarterback and we ought to be looking at this and say i'm going to block for you and if i need to pitch in, i will pitch in. we need to go and if not, i think we will be thinking separately and that's where the disagreement is. >> the shackles are off, donald trump said. does trump think he has run a restrained campaign than the problems for him? >> maybe by donald trump standards, he has. we will have to find out on that. he has gone beyond what anybody expected a year and a half ago when we brought him in to iowa. a lot of people thought he had
2:16 pm
no chance. >> how about your standards? by yours? >> here's what i would say. there was not a lot of high expectations for the ability to succeed in the debate on sunday night. he walked out a lonely man and walked off the stage victory yaus by every measure. we don't know what he is capable of doing, but he has risen to the challenges and we will see what his strategy is going forward. i want a strong leader that allows us to pass a conservative a jentda and that's what america wants and they should not be blinded by the trump tape that seems to be sweeping the nation. be objective and make the right decisions for america. >> you said clinton is somebody i can work with. it's not donald trump. you can accomplish not your agen agenda, but you can work with hillary clinton. >> i know i can work with donald

right now. if donald trump doesn't win this thing, he has unearthed a lot of anger in this country, and a lot of people's dissatisfaction who doesn't just dissolve and go away. >> you know, president obama says this nation is not as divided as some people would like to believe, but there is a definite divide. donald trump and some of his rhetoric, starting off with barack obama and the birther issue, and then talking about the wall, has created a chasm. and then this issue with the police versus the community. i mean, it's so many different things. we've got a list and i know i'm missing so many pieces. but there is a divide. and donald trump talked early on about a revolt. he talked about anger. he talked about, you know, let's have a riot. he talked about these things. so he put the words out there. and going back to the bible, the bible talks about, as a man speaketh, as is he. not only that, he is a walking

contradiction in every sense of the word. when he gets his way, everything is fine, but when he doesn't, people remember those old things that he said. >> but these divisions i think in large part are fueled by fear right now, on both sides. donald trump has a new ad calling hillary clinton dangerous, showing pictures of isis and terrible things happening around the world. hillary clinton about trump, told "the new york times," i'm the last thing that stands between you and the apocalypse. >> but she's not dealing in fear. she's basically saying, these are his words. let's not forget, he's been going after our institutions of checks and balances. he has gone after reporters for trying to keep him honest. he's gone after federal judge, judge curiel, when he said, i don't like the way you're prosecuting. when i'm in the oval office, i'm going to use personal vendettas. and recently he said, i'm going to jail a political opponent. >> that was just this weekend. >> michael, go ahead. >> let's remember, the country is extremely frustrated with washington. >> two-thirds of americans say we're on the wrong track. >> no person personifies the

washington establishment more than hillary clinton. former first lady, senator, secretary of state. this is a person who came to washington straight out of law school and has, other than a brief sojourn in arkansas, as basically made her life's work in this town. she embodies the establishment these people are revolting against because of the anger and frustration they feel. >> but i think what the problem is, i think it's on both sides, for the democrats and the republicans, you cannot just focus in on your base, because when you focus in on your base, you leave so many people out there alone. and feeling like they are not covered. andic that's the problem -- i don't think, i know. we're seeing the republican party implode. >> i don't think the anger and frustration with washington is confined to the base of the republican party. >> let's be clear. when president obama came and said i want to actually be the president for everyone, mitch mcconnell clearly stated that he wanted to make sure the president would fail. as a result, you cannot negotiate with someone who does not want to brick you -- to negotiate with you. >> i want to interrupt, this is not a conversation we'll be able to finish right here, but an
