next couple of hours. 45 mile per hour wind gusts just a few minutes ago, so it's a windy day today as cold air comes rushing in. snow showers and flurries are possible, especially north and west of town. the temperature may recover a couple of degrees, but i'm thinking steady or slowly falling through the day. it will feel colder because of the wind. when we come back, we'll look at the seven-day forecast. first, good morning to sarah, see what's happening on the roads. >> good morning, tony. good morning, everyone. nice start out there. just dealing with high winds, so wind warnings are in effect in all of the area bridges, and that includes the bay bridge. everything flowing well on 97 north and southbound through glen burnie. b.w. parkway in great shape. the entire beltway running smoothly. 54 on the north side. west side checking in right around 52 as you make your approach to i-95. let's start in the area of 50 right at sandy point. if you're traveling to or from the bay bridge, wind warnings are in effect there, but no

real delays there at the toll plaza. another portion of 50 right at st. margaret's, and we're looking good here as well. we'll keep you posted on any new problems that develop. that's the latest on traffic pulse 11. >> today is the last big push before the iowa caucuses tomorrow. as 11 news reporter tracie potts tells us, the latest poll shows there could still be a surprise in store before a winner is declared. >> people here like to see their candidates talk to them, shake their hand. and right now, more iowans are leaning toward rick santorum. >> trust your judgment and lead. make that right decision. >> the "des moines register" puts santorum third, but second, virtually tied with mitt romney in the last two days of polling. >> a full-spectrum conservative, rick santorum is rock-solid on values issues. >> that's the issue between these two, who's more conservative? >> you can't have a strong

department statistics report that 196 people were killed in the city in 2011, the lowest since 1978 when 197 homicides were reported. it is a far cry from 1993's peak murder rate of 353. per capita, baltimore still ranks as one of the deadliest cities in the nation. city leaders credit a sustained focus on repeat violent offenders and increased community engagement for the continued drop in murders. also new this morning, baltimore city detectives are handling an investigation into an overnight shooting in southeast baltimore. the shots were fired just before 10:00 last night in the 500 block of north elwood street. no word on the identity or condition of the victim this morning. in harford county, authorities say two stabbings occurred within half an hour of each other may have a common connection. both attacks happened in the edgewood area along the 1700 block of meadowwood court between 10:30 and 11:00 cast night. investigators tell 11 news, in each case the victims report they were walking in the area and got involved in some type of fight. one of the victims had to

undergo surgery, but is in stable condition. >> there's still no word this morning as to what may have sparked a three-alarm blaze that left 14 people homeless. one firefighter was injured while battling the flames, which broke out around 6:45 sunday morning on south bouldin street. when firefighters arrived, they noticed heavy smoke and flames coming from the home. >> it actually got up into the top area, which is simply the corner of the roof and actually spread to eight other homes. >> no one was seriously injured in the fire, although one person was taken to a hospital with a mild case of smoke inhalation. meanwhile, firefighters in howard county were put to the test battling a fire at a family-run farm in woodbine. these pictures show flames devouring the barn along the 2600 block of jennings chapel road. 60 firefighters responded to the two-alarm blaze, which included the rescue of several horses and other barn yard animals. investigators are now searching

for the cause. a homeless man is behind bars, accused of setting a motel fire last week. police tell 11 news they believe 48-year-old barrie lee murphy started the fire at white elk motel during a fight. it happened just before 9:00 last monday night. none of the people staying at that motel were hurt. >> ravens fans fired up this morning after sunday afternoon's big win to close out the 2011 regular season. >> not only did the win over cincinnati give the team the division championship, it also ensured that part of the road to the super bowl will come through baltimore. 11 news reporter kim dacey joins us live from m&m bank stadium with fan reaction. >> as you said, the ravens win yesterday means they will be playing a home game right here at m&t bank stadium during the playoffs. they also get a bye week for the first week of the playoffs. that's next week. fans were, of course, elated at the big win yesterday, even

investigators may have a glimpse of an arsonist in southern california. investigators have released the security camera video pointing to a person of interest in nearly 40 fishese set in and around los angeles in the past few days. you'll see the man in black coming up from the underground parking garage. you see him there on the right-hand side, right behind the woman there. investigators say this person of interest was also spotted at the scene of another fire. the arsonist is mainly targeting vehicles. meanwhile, a manhunt is underway for a gunman at mount rainier national park in washington after a park ranger was shot and killed. police have identified 24 benjamin barnes as a person of interest. police say barnes was a survivalist and iraq war veteran, is also the suspect of four people at a house party south of seattle. a bit of deja vu as for the second straight year, another mass death of birds has plagued a town in arkansas. last new year's, thousands of

>> good morning. sarah caldwell with a look at your morning commute. not bad out there. we're looking at a pretty smooth start, except for the winds. we have high winds and, of course, wind warnings in effect at the area bridges. one problem of night in aberdeen, some fire activity along stephanie road. be extra careful there. 95 looks good north and southbound out of the northeast. 54 on the north side through parkville, no problems on the j.f.x. this morning. the southwest corner of the beltway checking in at 55 miles per hour. 95 through howard county at around 59 as you make your approach to 32. 295 in good shape. let's give you a quick look outside, and we'll check the bay bridge. toll plaza here at sandy point,

nothing significant there. again, wind warnings are in effect. live view of traffic in the area of oak court coming off the ramps from southbound 795, and a nice start on the northwest corner of the beltway. that's the latest on traffic pulse 11. now tony has a check on the forecast. >> last night an arctic cold front went through. now it's sweeping through the east coast. you can see the temperatures drop off off to the northwest, in the teens across the northern plains. this is going to be a slow process here. it's not going to be a quick shot, but that cold air is oozing its way over the ridge tops into maryland. you can see it closer here. eventually that coal air is going to get in here, so it's difficult to say what's going to happen with the temperatures today. i think they'll basically hold steady or slowly fall as we head into the afternoon. we're just going to say upper 30's and low 30's. it's 39 in cockeysville. you have to factor in the winds

as well of. the winds are gusting close to 40 miles per hour, so it feels like it's in the 20's. that's what you want to dress for this morning. we just had a 45 mile per hour gust at b.w.i. the winds will settle down as we head into the afternoon. because of the cold air raking across the lake water to our north, the lake-effect snow machines have turned on, and some of these flurries may make it into the baltimore area, but the bulk of the snow is going to be in western maryland and west virginia. winter storm warnings are in effect for garrett county. they could pick up 150, 12 inches of snow today and tomorrow. so this is going to be a good snow event for the ski resorts out there. they've been rooting for some snow and looks like it's finally going to come in. so breezy, colder, maybe snow flurries, a mix of sun and clouds, temperatures will stay between 36 and 41, but feeling much colder than that. overnight, partly cloudy skies, cold, maybe snow flurries. temperatures will drop back into the 20's, and it will feel like it's in the teens because of the wind. seven-day forecast, as we get

through the next few days, high of only 29 tomorrow. a chance for snow flurries. the winds will diminish a little bit. 33 on wednesday. we'll drop into the teens wednesday and thursday morning. it will warm up at the end of the week, make it close to 50 by the time we get to the weekend on saturday. >> in this morning's consumer alert, if you're trying to keep warm this winter, avoid dangerous portable heaters. a reminder from the consumer product safety commission highlights heating products recalled over the past year. they include the slow pro air tech aloha breeze and comfort 1500 heaters sold at wal-mart. also on the list, the portable electric heater. they can all pose a fire hazard. for the first time in 60 years, the united states has exported more gasoline, diesel and jet fuel than it has imported. according to the u.s. census

bureau, 2011 is the first time fuel has made the top of the list. while we have to import a lot of crude oil, it is sending out more refined fuel than taking in. this is mostly because of rising prices in other parts of the world, combined with declining domestic demand. although the recession in this country officially ended 2 1/2 years ago, the u.s. economy is still suffering an economic hangover, especially when it comes to jobs. what if we told you thousands of americans found work in 2011 at some unlikely companies that are expected to provide many more jobs in the new year? nbc's lisa myers explains how some of these jobs are coming home. >> seven to 10 business days. >> this facility is not in mumbai or bangalor. >> $175. >> it's here in dallas, texas. more than 90% of the workers

are americans. in the last few years, the indian global outsourcing giant ages has expanded its operations in the u.s. five-fold t. now has nine call centers and more than 5,000 workers. these are the newest trainees in dallas. how many of you were unemployed when you got this job? most of you. for kathy gray, who had exhausted all they are savings, this job was a life saver. >> i felt kind of desperate. was he going to be able to find work that was going to pay me enough to keep my head above water? >> company officials say what's happening here is important. after more than a decade of american jobs being outsourced overseas, at least a few of those jobs are coming home, returning to the united states. why? high unemployment has kept down wages in the u.s., while labor costs in india and elsewhere have risen.

in the bloomberg business report. >> good morning, wishing you all a happy new year. the markets are closed today in observance. the question is, how will big economic issues like europe's debt crisis and our economic recovery shape out in 2012? meantime, here are some things you can definitely look out for. have you noticed that milk prices have been getting more and more expensive? the good news is that dairy price hikes are expected to slow down this year. the usda says that farmers are boosting their milk production, which will definitely help out with supply. that will make that milk more affordable when it comes to those cookies dipped in milk. but the cookie prices, they may be headed higher. usda says that food prices will rise up to 3.5% this year. major u.s.-based food manufacturers like kraft, general mills, and kellogg's are expected to see a 4% growth in their sales this year. it's because of price increases last year and more demand from emerging markets. manufacturers have also jumped on the cost savings programs, which will also help. so look out. 2012 could be a good year for

let's take a look at some of those actual conditions. the colder air starting to work its way in from pennsylvania. it's 29 in altoona. 42 in annapolis. the temperatures today are either going to hold steady, maybe even drop off a couple of degrees. we'll just say upper 30's to around 40. it's going to be breezy. there's even a slight chance for snow flurries, especially north and west of town. it's going to get even colder tonight and tomorrow. we'll take a look at the forecast when i come back. >> a couple of stories of interest this morning to those of you who work the overnight shift in this morning's medical alert. >> and none of it is good news, i hate to say. the crazy hours might bring an increased risk of diabetes. researchers at the harvard school of public health analyzed data collected from more than 170,000 nurses, and they found the longer women work the night shift, the higher their risk to the extent those who work nights for 20 years or more had a 60% increased risk for diabetes. experts say shift workers tend

we'll switch over to a live view of traffic on the key bridge. wind warnings are in effect this morning, but no impact is being felt here at the key bridge at the moment. everything running smoothly to and from the bridge. that's the latest on traffic pulse 11. now tony has a check on your forecast. >> i think you spotted two cars out there. that's good. yeah, there was one or two on the bridge. everybody's off still this morning. that's a beautiful thing. weather's changing for us here over the next 24 hours. we had an arctic cold front go through last night, and the coldest air mass of the season is now sliding over towards maryland. it's going to take a while to make the transition. it's not really cold today. you'll notice it more tonight and tomorrow. but if you look upstream from us, the winds coming out of the northwest, you can see the colder air across the great lakes where temperatures are in the teens and even some single digits showing up. it's slowly working its way over towards baltimore. it's 38 at the airport right now. 41 downtown. 36 in parkton. it gets colder the further north and west you go. it's 32 degrees in hagerstown, so it's difficult to say what the temperatures are actually going to do today.

they'll probably continue to drop off, and then maybe spike up a degree or two and then fall off late again this this afternoon. it's going to feel cold because of the wind. wind chills will be in the upper 20's and low 30's either way. we just had a 45 mile per hour wind gust at the top of the hour. 37 in annapolis. the winds will stay with us all day today. and as i mentioned, winds coming out of the northwest, so you got the lake-effect snow machines going now, so some of those snow showers and flurries may make it all the way down into baltimore later this morning. but the best chance for snow will be out in western maryland. they've been begging for snow at the ski resorts, and they're going to get it over the next 24 hours. garrett county under a wind storm warning right now. they may pick up anywhere from six to 12 inches of snow between now and wednesday morning. so natural snow at the ski resorts, and that is actually good news. forecast for us around baltimore, breezy and obviously colder than yesterday. yesterday we were in the upper thifts. slight chance for snow flurries, partly cloudy skies,

temperatures between 36 and 41, but it will feel much colder than that. sunrise at 7:26. overnight tonight, partly cloudy skies, cold, winds will diminish a little bit, but the temperatures are going to drop into the lower end of the 20's. seven-day forecast going into the weekend, coldest day will be tomorrow. still a chance for snow flurries, still breezy, high of only 29 on tuesday. that's not wind chill. the actual temperature, only 29. then we're going to drop into the teens wednesday and thursday morning. 16 on wednesday morning. 33 for a high in the afternoon. still in the 30's on thursday. and then it will warm up, close to 50 by the time we go into next weekend. >> 5:47, 38 degrees on tv hill. coming up, we'll take a look at one of your answers to our water cooler question of the day. >> and take a look at last night's winning maryland lottery numbers. possible as well. when we come back, we'll take a look at the seven-day forecast. first let's say good morning to sarah, see what's happening on the roads. hi, sarah. >> good morning, everyone. a nice start out there. very light volume. the one problem of note is in aberdeen. fire activity along stepney road and aldino. so be careful. other than that, 95 looks good north and southbound coming out of the northeast. 57 on the north side over toward the harrisburg expressway. so far, so good on the j.f.x., and west side checking in right around 58 miles per hour at i-70. we're at five minutes on southbound 95 to get you down to the fort mchenry. eight minutes as you travel down to the harbor tunnel. 11 minutes on southbound from the beltway southwest down to 32. winds are an issue. at the area bridges, all of them have wind warnings in effect, so something to keep in mind. let's give you a live view of traffic. in the area of 29, north and southbound in great shape. we're looking at very light volume still around the area as lk
