between here and basically through ducksbury on route three massdot reporting it's not moving faster than 25 miles probably less and you can see a little bit of what has caused this. there was clearly a dusting here. we saw some of that evidence of almost whiteout conditions andslippery underneath that. now, the massachusetts state police started to warn about this around 3:00 saying that especially in the ducksbury area there were slippery conditions about upwards of 20 340e9or vehicles off the road -- 20 motor vehicles off the road and we have pictures. there was a car that ran off the road and went into tree. a tractor trailer that slid off and another truck so conditions this don't seem to have improbed very much -- improved very much. we are talking a dusting of snow and slippery conditions and slow moving here.

paul burtson live where the suspect face adjudge. paul. >> reporter: i can tell you that suspect faced a number of charges today including attempted murder and assault and battery. everyone is still scratching their heads trying to find out what caused the man to attack the office here was trying tohelp. >> he came close to losing his life. >> reporter: officer russell poissant is e-- is recovering at home after trying to help this man. you don't expect. you are looking for the person with a gun and the victim attacks you. >> reporter: police say on new year's day silveira was claiming someone was chasing hipping with -- him with a gun when the office are tried to help him from running into a oncoming car he attacked him. >> at that point in time, he struck the officer in the battle for his life.

there have been i would say close to a thousands people waiting out in the bid bitter cold for more than an hour in order to get into see donald trump tonight and perhaps you can hear in the background they are chanting trump's name. that was starting to be drowned out by a chant of open the doors. and i can understand why. because it's bitter cold here in lowell tonight. that's not deterring the faithful. from turning out and as you can see in video we shot earlier today, people did start lining up earlier. and there has been a lot of talk in recent days here in the lowell area about a student led protest and they sut up a free speech done about 100 -- zone about 100 yards away from the front door for protesters to gather there. was a small group there earlier and this appears to have grown to maybe about 50 or so young people with signs. we will fill you in more on that at 6 and tonight at 10 and 11, we will have a full report

the site of the terror attack in san bernardino california reopened today. 600 employees returned to the inland regional center. they met in small groups to talk about the the attacks that killed 14 people. now the actual conference center where a husband and wife supporting isis opened fire will be closed indefinitely. and today the president is vowing to move forward on gun control measures by-passing the republican controlled congress with an executive order. >> this is not going to solve every violent crime in the country, it's not going to prevent every mass shooting. it's not going to keep every gun out of the hands of a criminal, it will potentially save lives. >> the president did not reveal the details of the order but it's expected to include measures to expand background checks. house peeker paul -- speaker powell ryan -- paul ryan calls it a overreach. >> a crash that caused a big problem. >> the accident that shut down a major highway for hours.

. that is big mess on route 1. sky "over the scene after a car slammed into the utility pole knocking down the wires across both the north and the southbound lanes. the accident happening before 11 this morning. >> and one of the southbound lanes is actually still closed at this point. christina hagger is live. >> reporter: for utility crews and massdot crusades race to get route 1 back and running by the evening rush hour and they did it. southbound side of route 1 is down to one lane for a small stretch where they are working to restore power but this road was completely shut down for most of the day northbound and southbound. countless drivers rerouted to avoid this scene. a silver car mangedeled by the -- make led by the weight of the utility polite crabbed into and everything on it.

and plymouth and toward the cape seeing that snowfall a report from larry in centreville says light snow there. we will track it as it shifts further east in the evening time frame. terry sent this from plymouth. the road are slow. it's very cold too. there will be no melting. wind gusting out of the north northeast for many. we willa few gusts own 3 -- over 33 miles per hour. and in terms of the snow we will move the focus toward the towards the islands. right now it's not looking terribly intense but it's enough to make things slick and that's the bottom line of the tomorrow morning before tomorrow. time. so-- the entire time. a coating to a couple inches possible from the line toward the cape and island. not a big storm but one to stream caution. falling back. 23 in boston.
