12:01 pm
to give us a update on what happens here. we know the officer was shot in the leg and undercover officer who was chasing a suspect. we don't know more details than that which we are hoping to hear from the commissioner he. but they are personal difficult press conferences for the commissioner when any of his officers are shot in the line of duty. the commissioner ironically was just in washington, d.c. invited by the president to take part in a round table on the issue of guns and proposals. he was before a committee on beacon hill talking about violence on the streets yesterday. and the issues around safe guns so he is angry about this getting guns off the streets and violence on the streets and the danger that his officers face. so what we need are details. we are told the officer is going to be okay. these are noncritical injuries but still any officer shot in the line of duty is very difficult. we expect to hear from the commissioner to receive more details. reporting live from outside boston medical center beth

you can see two vehicles taped off and a number of investigators there as well. >> we are joined by the formerpolice commissioner first can can you walk us through how this unfold on the ground when officer being shot? be with you. when a situation unfolds like this, it results in a rapid and complete response by anybody who was in the area. i happened to be at the south boston roadry by the state police barracks when the the call came in and i salt massive response of the boston and a few state police going up in the area. it's an all hands on deck comes out. they want to make sure the
12:06 pm
officer is safe. and they want to make sure the suspect is crap tured as quickly as possible. >> that's the case. suspect was apprehended quickly. also, the weapon found as well. in terms of a best case scenario it played out in a quick way. >> right, it did. is this there's no question and we are not sure of exactly what the circumstances were here but any time an officer is shot and the suspect cush vibes theincident it's a testimony to the restraint of the police officers involved in it. and we hear that this police officer was patrolling the neighborhood this is something they do every day. this part of dorchester is it a notorious area because we are getting mixed information from what neighbors are saying versus what some police are dorchester.
12:07 pm
that chris and i think that you know if the neighbors who live on that street perceive the streets to be a safe street, that would be in contrast with some of the statistics from the general area. now, this particular street has not been the site of any shootings but just a block away at olney and geneva there he's been several incidents there over the years. i swounded to that area myself for several homicides that occurred. the intersection of bowdoin and geneva is a stuff area that had a lot of gun violence and the facts will bear that out. just the block aor two away people can be living in what they perceive to be a better neighborhood but quite frankly there has been a lot of gun violence within a mile of that incident. >> and speak of gun violence
12:08 pm
washington, d.c. talking about this very issue. >> right. there was the town hall meeting last night that was a interesting discussion about the future of our country and how we will deal with this problem but commissioner evans has made great progress in that area. you know the city of baltimore had over 340 homicides last year city of 600,000. and the sit they of boston had a little over 40 or so i am not sure of the exact number but it is amaying the progress and work the wofton -- boston police have done in the area. >> speaking of the ongoing progress boston police are making throughout history the mast several decades one of the big things is officers on the neighborhoods. how important is it that police officers continue that work getting out into the areas to
12:09 pm
there feel safe. >> it's extremely important and it's the cornerstone of community policing. the desire and the mandate that officers get out of their police cars and talk to residents and establish relationships in neighborhoods where there are problems. that's the fundamental basis of community policing and almost every police department in the country talks about doing community police but few do it as well as boston. >> we appreciate you taking the time to walk us through this and the process and we will continue to touch base with you on this as well. let's look live at boston medical center. that's where we are awaiting a news conference with commissioner evans to update us on the the situation there. we appreciate you being with us this noon we will have much

>> the call came in at 10:25 of the drug unit officer shot in the leg taken to boston medical center where we are told he is speced to be -- expected to be okay but events leading up to this unknown we are hoping to get it from commissioner evans right now. >> >> good afternoon with me is mayor walsh and staff and police patrolman's association. just to give you a brief outline about 10:20 this morning, our officers from the drug unit were involved in an investigation of an individual who they-- who is know to the officers to be a drug dealer in the area well-known to the officers. at that time the officers knew
12:13 pm
license and his license was suspended. they boxed him into stop him and at that time when the officers were getting out of the vehicle, the suspect who is grant headly who is 27 from dorchester got out of his vehicle and began to fire unprovoked at the officer. the officer quickly exchanged gunfire. off. the officers who were with the injured officer gave foot pursuit and tackled the suspect and were able to confiscate the automatic handgun which looks for a 40 millimeter at this time and bring him into custody without the suspect being injured.
12:14 pm
and has been locked up for prior firearm charges. he was locked up in 2012 when he was sentenced to three years in custody. he was released in april last year and is out on probation. he is out selling drugs and that's why he was pulled over. i want to commend my officers. i think you know we are fortunate here that we don't have an office here suffered a more severe injury. he has a serious leg wound and is up in icu and the doctors down here have done a great job but i also want to commend my fellow officers. respond. good. officers are equipped with tourniquets and they put it on the officer and the help of the h and h ambulances they got him down here quickly where he is
12:15 pm
again, very fortunate that he is not more seriously injured. he is a 9 year veteran assigned to the drug unit and highly decorate and we were about to give him an accommodation for a drug arrest he made and we are all here and thankful that he is obviously is not more seriously injured and i think it goes to the idea of the restraint our officers use. the individual just shot one of our officers and the officers were able to tackle him and not into custody. thank god you know he is also in custody but he is also not shot. with that the mayor and then you guys can ask questions. >> first of all i am grateful we are not here under a worst situation and circumstance. my prayers go out to the family
12:16 pm
commend -- officer and i commend him for their work and commend the officers of the police department there's a lot of stuff that goes on and criticism of the police departments and her in boston our police department is certainly is the best in the nation doing their job every day and the risks they tay every day going out there. also i want to say we have too many guns on the street. you know we are working very hard. the boston police department took 800 guns off the street last year took a thousand off the year before and we have too many guns. and i could say we are not going to tolerate anyone going after the police department. their job is to protect the community and protect the neighborhoods and that's when they do every day day in and day out. and in this situation i want to pass on my prayers to the family for a speedy recovery and to let people know appreciate the men and women of our police department in
12:17 pm
now you can ask pad rose the president of the patrolman association to say a few words. >> i with a be the to say thank god the officer is alive -- i want to say is thank god the officer is alive. we face the dangers every day and it's far too common for people to take shots at police officers across the country and it can't be tolerated. the public has to step up and as far as the guns go i agree with the mayor 100%. there are far too many guns out in the streets. the officers in the city of collecting them arresting people with the guns and bottom targets. we are the targets. and that's wrong. we are the men and women out city. public shouldn't stand for this. it's outrageous. last night in philadelphia a assassinated.
12:18 pm
cruiser ambushed him and fired i believe 13 times into the cruiser. country. it cannot stand we have to thank you. >> he jumped out and was he away? >> from what i understand as soon as he got out he started to shoot before the chase was on so unprovoked again our officers not having their weapons out, from what i understand he was shot. >> any idea how many shots he got off. >> it's a active scene if you've been up there they are collecting shell casings and confiscated the gun. so, again, still trying to determine. >> the officer's wife. >> she is here thank god and she is by his side. no children from what i understand and he is shaken up and his uncle is here and i think we are resting knowing he
12:19 pm
officer. >> tying the turn quit did he help -- tourniquet. >> he tried to do it initially because all officers have it but a fellow uniformed officer nearby hear the call and tied it off and helped him and that was fortunate. it could have saved his life and could have -- at least saved his leg. >> did he have the gun on him when he was tackled. >> i am not sure if he had it on him but a gun was found close by. >> a couple more questions. >> what's the officer's him in. >> i don't want to give it because we are not sure his family has been notified and we will get that out as soon as we know again we just got his wife and he has believe it or not his mother underwent serious surgery and we really don't want to alarm herself and i don't want his name out at this time. >> how difficult is this for you it's an area where one of your officers was shot last year and here again you are
12:20 pm
in the line of duty and i am sure it's personal for you. >> it is. i think our officers lay their lives on the line every day and the job hat nos got -- has not gotten easier given what's going on across the country people have a lot of negative views for us and you know we work our best out there to make the neighborhoods safe and we are out there so young kids aren't getting shot and it bothers me someone would think it's okay to shoot at a policeman and you know, as said, this individual has a dangerous past. i am sure he is desperate and doesn't want to go back to jail and that's probably sort of what happens when morning-- we were down a individual what violent history and probably didn't want to go to jail but unfor the in the thely most people in those neighborhoods they are great people. you know, but there's dangerous kids that we have to get off the street and like the mayor said and like what the president said, you know, there's way too many guns out
12:21 pm
people. you know. you know it's unfortunate and >> how. [audio not understandable] far so far. >>i don't know but there's been outreach i got to it will you. i reached out to the naacp and the urban league from here. and they reached out to me and they are very concerned and okay. and so, you know the clergy has rallied around us. the associations have and so the community is very much concerned and they are also okay. >> last question here please. >> well, prelier limb nary i am told -- preliminarily i am told it's automatic glock 40 millimeter again preliminarily that's what i am towed. that's high velocity type of handgun and again the officer has a serious wound.
12:22 pm
and now it's nonlife- threatening. >> what did you say to him. >> we thearchgd him for his service. we told -- tharchgd him for his service. -- thanked him for his service. we to him in our minds he is a hero because he is dog guards work taking guns off the street so young kids and mothers don't have to deal with you know someone getting killed on the street i said i appreciate his service and his bravery and hope for a peedy recovery. >> a -- >> he said he is appreciative. you know. i think when the mayor comes and pay as visit everyone realizes you know, it's serious and we all both me and the mayor and all the command staff and whole city appreciates what our officers do day in and day out everyone realizes this job difficult. but what's happening in other
12:23 pm
we have the lowest homicide rate in 16 years. 38 homicides this year. and so, we are doing a lot of great things to make this city safe. >> pass on any of his words i know the investigation is going but anything he said. is okay. i think he is gratified his officers were able to apprehend you know you never lose the cop and in you and he is happy we got the guy and the personal responsible because that's when they set out to do was take a dangerous felon off the street and ultimately they did what they had. unfor the netly the officer got shot and he will be great but that's the dangerous work we do every day. >> end on that note thank you so much. mayor thank you. >> you have. >> we have lin listening to a news conference with commissioner evans updating us on the situation leading to an officer involved shooting in dorchester. this happened at 10:20 this morning.
12:24 pm
news that office wert drug unit were investigating a well-known drug dealer who had a suspended license and they boxed him in and the suspect is a 27-year- old from dorchester and that this individual had fired at officers. there was gunfire exchanged and that the suspect took off. and he was eventually tackled by police. >> and commissioner evans saying that his officers showed great restraint. he said that the officer who is a 9-year veteran was actually up for a commendation well decorated officer for a recent arrest and he did commend his officers for showing great restraint in taking that suspect down without causing injury to the suspect. in april. they say he's violent person and he is well-known to police as a drug dealer. >> also calling him a dangerous felon at one point commissioner evans. again, this wounded officer
12:25 pm
has a serious leg wound and is in icu but with his wife and uncle who are by his side giving him comfort. >> and i think one of the big points both mayor walsh and commissioner evans says is there's too many guns on streets. >> right they he emphasized that point just repeatedly their frustration we will switch gears and get a check of your forecast with pamela gardner. hi pamela. >> hi. we have overcast skies temperatures in the 30s and 40s and for the rest of today we will keep the clouds around with areas of drizzle developing and temperatures falling into the 30s. overnight some of the drizzle could freeze especially when you get outside the 1 28 belt low temp of 38 in boston and especially in western and northern parts of new england we could see a bit of a light wintry mix. here's 7-day forecast looking ahead to the weekend saturday 43 degrees after a bit of a slick start to the day sunday 52 with wind swept rain and at least we are warm but colder next week. back to you. >> thanks very much. we will continue following this breaking news for you this
