the safety of those behind the badge. >> officers lay their lives on the line every day and this job has not gotten easier. >> and that officer is suffering from a gun shot wound to the leg. >> now he is expected to recover. our live team coverage begins with julie live at boston medical center. julie. >> reporter: lisa, david, that officer whose name is being withheld is in fair condition. he's expected to be okay. thanks in large part to a newly issued department tourniquet. >> i'm at 33 mount bowdoin terrace, shot. >> the nine-year decorated veteran police officer was chasing down a dangerous drug dealer, a felon, when he was shot in the leg. >> unprovoked, again, our officers not having their weapons out, from what i understand. >> members of the drug unit had

cornered up in a car on mount bowdoin terrace in dorchester. >> at first, i thought it was fire crackers and then when i heard two more gun shots, i got up. >> i heard police yelling, police, and he kept on running. >> commissioner evans says the injured officer tried to tie his newly issued tourniquet, when a fellow officer came to his aid. >> i don't know what he was thinking. >> the suspect's father who saw his son not long before the shooting says he can't explain any of this. >> he is from a good family. we don't condone that kind of behavior. i don't know what he does when he is not here. when he is here, he is a respectful kid. police are here, they do a good job protecting us. we have a lot of respect for the boston police. >> headley is expected to be arraigned on monday. live at boston medical center, wbz news.

digging into his background, our i team found grant headley has a long criminal past. most are drug and weapons charges. in 2008, police labeled him a career criminal. headley served several years in jail. in fact, he was released in april and on probation at the time of today's shooting. now the commissioner says this shooting was completely unprovoked and it comes on the same day that a gunman ambushed a police officer in philadelphia. police everywhere say their job is more dangerous than ever, jim armstrong is live with more. jim, wearing a badge feels like wearing a target for some officers. >> and david, tonight it's not just police who are saying there are too many guns on the street. we talked to one man whose fiance lives right up the street. she was home this morning and watched the whole shooting happen just steps from her house, which was especially painful for her and her family because just yesterday, they

were able to tackle him and not use deadly force. >> but that level of restraint, he suggested, is getting harder to maintain. >> our officers lay their lives on the line every day they go any easier. >> this has become a daily it cannot stand. we have to change the way we do business. >> and tonight, both the police officer's union as well as the commissioner himself say a big part of the problem, there are simply too many illegal guns on the streets. we're live in boston tonight, jim armstrong, wbz news, lisa. >> jim, thank you. more now on the officer who was ambushed in philadelphia. the gunman claimed he was doing it for the islamic state. walking right up to the officer's car and firing into that cruiser. tonight, paula evan is in the satellite center with the latest. paula. >> despite getting shot at 13 times. that officer did manage to get out of the car and return fire, ultimately taking down the gunman.

a police funeral. >> surveillance photos show the gunman approaching officer jesse hartnet's patrol car with his weapon drawn. another image shows the suspect reaching inside the vehicle, firing at point-blank range, hitting the 33-year-old officer three times. >> a police officer is shot. >> he exits his police vehicle, starts chase, despite being seriously injured. >> the suspect, edward archer, was arrested near the scene and later told police he shot the officer in the name of islam. >> according to him, he believes that the police defend indivisible are contrary to the teachings of the coran. >> and one in south philadelphia not too far from where the shooting took place. >> archer has been a criminal history. and that the gun used was stolen from a philadelphia police officer two years ago. officer hartnet was seriously injured, but expected to be okay.

indication that the shooter is tied to some sort of larger terror plot. the suspect was treated and released into police custody. he is due in court next week. live in the satellite center, paula evans, wbz news. >> paula, thank you. tonight we have our eye on the storm. the threat of black ice overnight before a weekend soaker and possibly a run at record high temperatures. we are all over the place here, eric. >> lots to keep us busy here in the weather department. we'll start with tonight and anywhere near the coastline, still very mild, near 40 degrees. but inland is where we are watching. 32 in keen. 33 and orange at 34 degrees. a little bit of drizzle around so far tonight. more off to our west, and as this moves in, a clans chance for some icy areas. overnight travel into tomorrow morning. as we look at this hour by hour, outside of 495, everyone else staying above that freezing mark, so just regular drizzle. a lot of clouds out there during the day tomorrow, and similar to what we had today. eventually temperatures do jump

us and the icy threat goes away. sunday, a soaking rain, 50s, and strong winds. we'll take a full look at your forecast coming up in a few. >> eric, thank you. tonight the family of an injured boston pride hockey player confirms she has a significant spinal injury. they say she has no feeling in her legs and limited movement in her arms. a week ago, lang stepped on a hockey stick in the first period of the winter classic and crashed head first into the boards. tonight, she remains hospitalized in intensive care. in a statement, her parents say we have received an incredible outpouring of love and support from countless friends and family members while we try to navigate this overwelming situation. lang's family has set up a website to help with her healthcare costs and all national women's hockey league players are wearing lang's number, 24, on their helmets. those dangerous chemicals that triggered an explosion that badly injured four workers

been destroyed. late this afternoon, you can see the flames there. earlier today at the dow chemical plant, safety investigators had their first chance to go inside as they try to figure out what caused the blast. >> who is to say this is one of the more complex and larger hazmat incidents we responded to. >> it is cooperating with investigators and is in close contact right now with the family's of the four who were badly injured. lisa. >> accused of getting so drunk on the job, he couldn't open the door for police who came to check on the child. susan conaway had a blood limit. officers finally broke down the door to the apartment. was fine. connolly is facing charges. and a man is in police custody now accused of stabbing another driver in a case of road rage. this happened near the south shore plaza yesterday. police say 32-year-old, mario roman got into a fight with the

to el chapo's arrest. >> travelers pinning down a passenger who they say attacked a flight attendant. take a look at this. passengers heading from new york to chicago restrained the woman while the united airlines pilot made an emergency landing in detroit. the passengers say this woman started shouting to get off the plane. she has been charged with assaulting a crew member. secret service agents say they stopped a man plotting to steal one of the president's dogs. agents arrested scott in his washington, d.c. hotel room yesterday. they found an arsenal of weapons and ammunition in his truck. stockard told the agents he is jesus and wanted to kidnap beau or sonny. >> dogs will have to get their own secret service agents. >> don't they have them? >> they are safe tonight, that's the good news. let's talk weather, because it's going to be all over the place. >> i'm trying to figure out, because tomorrow not so bad, sunday -- is that right? >> that's pretty good,

a lot of clouds, a good day to hang out, watch some football, get some extra rest. january so far has been cooler than december by a wide margin, but still easy to take. running above average and more of the same is on tap this weekend. so here's the set up. we have a storm off to our west. this will track up through the great lakes and for the most part, bypass us. high pressure in canada is filtering in cool air. we could have icy spots tonight and into tomorrow morning. not an issue near the coastline. well above freezing all of southeastern massachusetts. orange at 34 degrees. a few pockets close to that freezing mark and what we have is a cold air damming setup. funnels, and runs up into the appalachians, it drains down the side of them. you see virginia there at 39 degrees. that cold air going well off to the south. our overnight low temperatures close to freezing in several towns. mainly along and outside of 495. so just a chance for a little

here's your hour by hour, a lot of clouds. speckled areas of drizzle showing up into tomorrow morning. a few snow flakes are possible, best chance of seeing the flakes into new hampshire for tomorrow. a lot of clouds, not going to see the sun this weekend, i don't think. as we head into tomorrow evening, if you have saturday night plans, rain showers become numerous. more of a damp atmosphere. areas of green, stays above freezing, so no issues with freezing conditions there. spotty freezing drizzle. it's not a big concern for us. it's something to be cautious of through the first part of tomorrow. a high of 45 in boston. bedford up to 40. pittsburgh up to 38 degrees and and islands. then that bigger storm on sunday brings in all sorts of heavy rain. it's going to be pouring buckets on sunday. it starts by mid-morning and rains heavily through the midday and into the afternoon. perhaps even some thunder and lightning in some of those downpours.

air and a lot of wind. as we head into sunday afternoon. rain totals, 1 to 2 inches. it's a good soaking region wide for everybody. could cause areas of flash flooding and heavier downpours. scattered outages. these areas in red here, far eastern massachusetts, especially toward the cape, 40 to 60-mile per hour gusts possible out of the south, southeast, and still strong gusts inland as well. something to watch a very afternoon. and the other thing to note, look at the highs, right next to record levels. a really good shot at tieing them and that warm air goes northbound and it will be raining all the way up into canada on sunday. skiing and snow boarding. saturday is your pick of this weekend. here's your full accuweather seven-day. monday, we cool back down into the low 30s. tuesday, a transition day and wednesday, data watch for a chance of snow showers. david and lisa, a storm nearby. something we are keeping an eye on. >> we'll keep it out there. you always say that.
