blizzard watches orange effect. the main theme, we talked about all week is the same. the mid-atlantic and us on the fringe after that big snow to our south. tonight. it's going to died toward the gulf coast. tomorrow, it will leave the rockies, pick up the moisture needed to produce that rain and snow and it moves of the eastern seaboard taking a storm. southeast. what we are watching is a quiet thursday and friday and saturday morning. but as we have been to saturday afternoon, that's i was going to try to extend farther northward. the biggest question here is exactly how far north that's no will make it. night. this is the latest. we have the potential for .5 feet of snow in southeastern massachusetts.

areas north of the pike looking at little to no snow and low- impact. we will talk more about what goes into the storm and the chance of coastal issues later in the newscast. tonight, airlines are trying to get word out to travelers including boston passengers to change their flights before the storm. delta, southwest in american are among airlines now waiving their change fees to reschedule your weekend flight and if you are traveling this weekend, expect major delays. breaking news, a 12 -- a 25- year-old man was hit and killed crossing route. police say he was in the crosswalk and the driver did stop. there are detours right now. no word yet whether the driver will face any charges. developing, state police are confirming that the referees for the patriots- chiefs playoff game left the footballs in the air pressure

police say a hyatt employee called payment date trooper had to drive the balls down to foxboro. the balls, only to be used by the kickers arrived about one hour before kickoff. this was first reported by zach coloft. ironically, the mistake came two days before the anniversary of the deflategate scandal. the weekend showdown out west between the patriots and showed up -- patriots and broncos. they are playing for the lamar hunt trophy on display in denver. >> tom brady and the patriots returned to the practice field in foxboro fine-tuning their plan for peyton manning and the broncos but it's another player grabbing headlines for helping a total stranger who was trapped in her car after a crash. >> she is telling her story for the first time. jim smith is live in foxboro. >> reporter: we have all heard the phrase football hero over

concerns touchdowns being scored on the field. tonight, we have the story of a real-life hero who just happens to play for the new england patriots. linebacker darrin fleming is no stranger to football stadiums but now he is being called a hero of the field. last thursday, he was driving on brief on when he came upon a car crash. a woman who does not want her identity revealed was trapped. >> there was smoke coming from the front and then i started to kick open the passenger side window. that's when i saw someone approach and he gestured that he would kick the window open for me. he did after a couple attempts. i saw he was wearing a patriots sweatshirt and was athletic. i assumed he was a player. >>reporter: doctor stephanie kuby witnessed the rescue. >> he was kicking out the door in the window. he was not a small man so it

he was determined. she was calling out the window to get out. she was very scared. >> reporter: darius fleming said he acted on instinct. >> i was like i will be right back. i've got to get you out. i just started kicking it. they didn't break right away. i wasn't sure if it was going to but on the third kick it did work >> reporter: it's safe to say he now has a lifelong fan. >> i was so grateful he was able to be there. he pulled over and that he was heroic in that way. >> reporter: fortunately, the driver was not hurt but unfortunately, darius fleming suffered a nasty cut on his leg when he kicked the window in. he had to get 22 stitches but he went on to play in saturday -- the saturday game against the chiefs.

>> reporter: david allen's worked at laughlin kennel for two years. this master for the deformed leg made him start taking video and pictures pics -- pictures. >> he was in a cage half his size he couldn't even stand up.>> reporter: dogs are bred in this outdoor kennel. several dozen puppies are kept in the basement waiting to be sold. allen's claims the dogs were kept in small cages covered in feces and in some cases died. >> i would walk into dead puppies in the morning. they would expect me to clean them up. >> reporter: we received these complaints from the state department of agricultural resources. on come from -- came from kathleen -- who seems the family of the puppies shipped in. >> it's heartbreaking. i contacted the mdar three years ago and never received a response. >> reporter: other complaints come from customers who say they bought dogs with kennel

some say there puppies died. they are the same types of complaints we uncovered when we investigated elite puppies of allegiance. since then, allegiance closed it store. its owner now works at laughlin kennel. >> there are times when i can get sick. >> reporter: this week, we asked for regulators buy stores with multiple complaints can continue to sell sick animals. >> has the state over shut down a puppy store? >> the state has actually shut down a store within the 21 years i have been with the department. >> reporter: the kennel is fighting back calling owens allegations ridiculous. they insist their dogs on come from puppy mills and their death raid is low. they tell me i-team, our facilities are inspected and licensed with several surprise inspections throughout the year. were inhumane conditions, we would not be allowed to stay in

south of boston is where a lot of the focus is. north of the pie, there is going to be a sharp cut off. we just got some new information in line with what they have been talking about. event. the light snow came through dc, total anarchy. dozens of accidents, gridlock on the roads. not a very good warm-up for the blizzard on the way. that's the small storm. the main storm will dive along the edge of that cold toward the gulf coast. is really wraps up on eastern seaboard. let's talk about the near term first. it's chilly outside, teens to mid-20s and for the most part in the teams tomorrow morning. still breezy with a dry wind. and other january day. this whole week has been classic midwinter. mainly sunny tomorrow with wins at 10-20 miles per hour. it calms down toward evening. sunset at 4:44 pm. another day to layer up. very similar to today.

as we head toward the weekend. tomorrow is the start of the storm system. as we have into -- into tomorrow night, strong thunderstorms along the gulf coast. then, big shield of snow developing here. heavy snowfall falling in dc and arrives in new york on saturday morning. saturday afternoon, snow tries to push and -- in to northern new york. how far north will the snow make it? there will be a shut down in the snow not just here in new england but across the southern tier of new york and southern nothing at all. here's the latest thinking. no real changes from earlier. we have got a chance for a half foot of snow and maybe more in southeastern massachusetts. as we head toward the cave, the islands, the south coast, over toward scituate, highlighting the opportunity for significant snow.

boston and the pike, we could still see several inches of snowfall. north of the pike, zero to 1 inch of total snowfall. there's going to be a sharp line. as we head through the next couple days, these might move more for south and we will also probably tighten them up. mold in massachusetts, new hampshire, vermont and maine, this is not a big event for you. the biggest totals, new york, philly, baltimore, dc, roanoke, north carolina. if any of your plans are taking you to charlotte, raleigh, dc, newark, those airports are going to have huge cancellations if not shutdowns. for us, we are watching flakes develop on saturday afternoon and evening arriving first were the south coast and the cape. most of the saturday evening and saturday night winding down on sunday morning. where watching some strong winds as the storm passes off to our south and east. gusts could be as high 65 miles

power outages. those winds drop off in wind. those strong winds coming out of the north, northeast will stock water and surf. we have high tides as of the full moon on saturday. a late sunday morning high tides , pockets of minor coastal flooding, erosion and if it comes any closer, that could escalate. i think we are three days out. you just want to say up to date with the forecast. it's not a huge storm like last year but it could still have an impact. on sunday afternoon, some sun (the 30s. even low 40s by tuesday. a bit of a warming trend compared to the cold of this week. don't count him out. >> bill belichick explains why he is not underestimating peyton manning in this weekend's championship afc game. >> -- governor baker will be delivering his state of the commonwealth address tomorrow. you can watch it live right

the patriots practiced indoors today but it look like more of a walk-through with the guys wearing sweats. the big topic this week is tom brady versus peyton manning. brady has had another sensational season and looks in peak form. manning has been injured in the struggling with arm strength. belichick says there is no way he is taking number 18 lightly. >> there is no player off our team that i have more respect for them peyton manning. has preparation is consistency, skills, i would never underestimate him under any circumstances.>> tend to shift our attention to denver. dan roach joins us with more. >> reporter: respect is a worth it doesn't get used as much as it used to in sports. we have already had some trash talking early on but when you listen to the two quarterbacks, plenty of respect coming from both. peyton manning will be facing
