>> reporter: and it is not nearly as strong as it was before. the wind is still gusting over 30 miles per hour. believe it or not we verified blizzard conditions in eastern massachusetts yesterday in several spots. let's take a look here including the vineyard and nantucket and including at the immediate coastline. keep in mind, even if you don't have the highest snowfall totals it is all about the wind speed. you need speeds of 35 miles per hour or greater. here is the key, less than a quarter of a mile for three consecutive hours or more. the current wind gusts have died down.

him -- the care that he needed. he was about an hour away from having to be put to sleep and his wonderful foster mom was able to go pick him up, dana right here. and we got his diabetes managed with insulin. so he needs insulin injections twice a day, which is very manageable. humans do it every single day all the time. >> absolutely. >> he still has a lot of love to give and a lot of life to give. he's almost 12 years old. >> breaks my heart he was with one family all those years. now when he really needs to be cared for is when he needs the love and needs the home. we're hoping for the best for that little guy. >> he's a min pin mix. >> they tease me because i think everything is viszla. let's do a quick home ward bound

. good sunday morning, everybody thanks for staying with us. i'm kerry connolly. our team coverage begins with danielle nile, are who is in sandwich and pamela gardner is in the studio. >> good morning. thankfully the storm is moving out and we'll have time to dig out from all the accumulation we've had had on the cape and islands.

the system, waking up to a clear and cold start to the day. satellite radar pictures show everything out by noon. near freezing for the high temperatures, but it's deceiving sunshine because it's so chilly. the winds subside a bit, a little bit of a gust to the north stays, especially on the cape and islands. danielle is live in sandwich. that's where we had the jackpot zone, but you're also tracking the wind and concern for coastal flooding later on. >>reporter: it is a snowy scene, pamela, absolutely. we've got a foot in parts of the cape, over that in a few communities.

it's on the signs and lamp posts. we're in sandwich. the marina is right behind me and the wind has been subsiding slowly. it is not nearly like what we had yesterday. current wind still gusting in spots. over 30 miles per hour in some spots and still isolated gusts over 40. i think the biggest factor with that this morning is there is no more damage to be done. the wind is not damaging, but it's adding that bite to the air. so the wind real, the real feel is running in the single digits and teens. it cuts right through you. want to be bundled up. eastern massachusetts, as we approach high tide, will see pockets of minor coast willal flooding and splashover. high tide coming up just after 11 a.m. so from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

we could see isolated pockets of moderate coastal flooding. so that with the high tide, the astronomical high tide. but at least the snow is done. the cleanup is going to continue continue. it is a sticky snow. we've had clouds that have gone by. i just checked the ever source outage map and it's under 1,000 customers without power, great news. i thought the number would be much higher, given the strong wind gusts carried from yesterday. power will be restored hopefully by later this morning for most customers. >> that is great news, danielle. one of our loyal viewers, denise, wanted me to to tell you, to brighten your day, there is the orchid show at the resort and conference center not far from you. that would brighten your day, wouldn't it? >>reporter: i think i'm going to go check that out.

eric had a live shot in sandwich and the conditions went from literally nothing to practically whiteout in about 20 minutes. traveling down from boston along route 3, snow started in plymouth. that's when conditions started to go downhill. like a wall of snow came in with that gusty wind. last evening was just impressive. we had tropical storm force gusts, hurricane gusts on nantucket. that visibility went to zero really fast and we started to see things go downhill on the cape. we had plow trucks come by, less than 1,000 customers without power this morning, which is great news given the strong wind gusts, pamela. the hope is that over the next couple of hours, the rest of the customers will have power restored. there goes the plow truck right behind us. they've been doing a good job. just take it slow on the roads and everybody should be a okay.

>> the storm is moving out. of great news. we'll have plenty of time to big out are from the snow on the cape. we'll get to danielle in just a second. it was a record setter in the mid-atlantic areas. top three snow storms actually in the new york city. local jackpot the cape and islands. ten to 15 inches in most areas. we're still watching late morning high tides, minor coastal flooding issues will many satellite radar shows the storm is gone, noah accumulation expected for the rest of today and quite some time, actually. clouds starting to move out f of southeastern massachusetts. clear in boston and definitely into werster county. temperatures stay around freezing. we have sun , but falling to 28 degrees by 3:00 and a few more clouds move into the forecast. daniel is standing by in sandwich. all morning long, we watched the storm move out from your pictures.

especially to east coast hubs. at least 600 flights nationwide planned for monday have been grounded. the city of boston for the most part got off easy comparatively. some areas saw about six inches of snow, though. and roads and streets are still pretty treacherous while plows and sanders are trying to do their best work. strong winds and high tides caused severe problems up and down the east coast. streets along the jersey shore were flooded out. this was the scene along the new jersey shore in margate city. that was one of the areas that hurricane sandy devastated back in 2012. baltimore also hit pretty hard. the city was digging out from nearly two oh, feet of snow. some people getting around on snowmobiles.

tides are ramping up anxiety of homeowners worried about flooding. jim smith reports. >> we were very lucky and missed a big bullet. >> brenda talks a walk on her front deck. the early saturday high tide came right up over the sea wall. but thanks to protection, the house is safe. >> this is what my husband did to protect the house this year and we feel really safe because that's wood and we don't think any waves are going to get through it. >> the wind was how long all night long, maximum gust of 51. the 11 p.m. high tide was expected to be extra high thanks to a full moon. but the south shore seems to be weathering this storm. >> we remember the big storms. the blizzard of '78, last year all the storms from last winter. winter.

noon and through the later part of today, mostly clear skies expected. a few more clouds late in the day. temperatures around freezing. we're tracking all the snow totals coming in. we'll go back out live to danielle standing by in sandwich. that was our jackpot zone. but across the country, impressive numbers coming out here, right? >>reporter: pamela, little shift in track. we could have been in the one to two to three feet of snow. so i don't know about you, i'm kind of thankful we're only dealing with six inches in boston, a little over a foot here in the cape and islands. it is wet and pasty. it's windy, adding a bite to the air. check out totals. they have been remarkable to our south. top rated snowfall storms here is what we're talking about. the totals were over several inches in places like maryland, down to dc as well.

26.8 inches of snow. in new york city, philly picking up 20.8. washington, d.c., 29.3. for baltimore, this is the biggest snowstorm ever. ever in history. with 29.2 inches. it broke the old record from february 16th to 18th in 2003. so incredible snow totals. jackpot readings. hancock, maryland, 36 inches. fredrick, 34. 40 inches in west virginia. and winchester, virginia picking up 33 inches. absolutely remarkable. i have a friend that just moved from florida to virginia and on thursday she got tons of groceries, drinks and stayed inside for the past four days. they were doing a p four day hunker down. >> definitely a good idea.

home. hopefully you're staying warm. danielle. we're watching for flooding today 10 a.m. coastal flood advisory and coast an warning for the cape and nantucket, expecting a splashover with that as well. temperatures in the teens and 20. with the little bit of winds we have, it feels much colder than the temperature. real feel temperatures from boston to manchester and lawrence, feeling like 14. current wind gusts are still strong. 35 on the vineyard. but nothing like yesterday. today's high temperatures running in the lower 30s. but with the snowpack, we're keeping temperatures colder than they otherwise could be.

with many areas in the suburbs in the single digits. a subtle breeze overnight as well. temperatures in the single digits for tomorrow morning bus stop forecast. the tuesday into wednesday our next chance for rain. but temperatures are extremely warm 40s. can you believe it? >> break out the bikini. just kidding. i won't even do that in the summer. last year we were the once measuring snow in feet. today that is in washington, d.c. right in the middle of it all is don champion. >> the sun is finally shining in the nation as capitalment the washington post called the storm a blizzard for the ages. and it was indeed. take a look at capitol hill.

digging out is not going to be easy. >> a major snowstorm hammered the northeast. the foot traffic in new york city's times square was noticeably quieter saturday night. the national weather service says more than two feet of snow fell in the big apple. >> this is a storm that's got a lot packing a lot of punch. >> major coastal flooding is a concern. philadelphia could get two feet by the time the storm ends. >> well beyond the idea of a winter wonderland. there is no romance in a blizzard. >> this woman wasn't going to let it stop her wedding. the dusquesne basketball team was finally free after being stranded on the pennsylvania turnpike. the storm caused blinding whiteout conditions.

. welcome back. we're talking about the ge headquarters move to boston that was announced recently with boston's chief economic officer. i'm curious about the mindset of the walsh administration when it comes to economic development. you guys have fought steve wynn

tooth and nail even though he's spending close to $700 million, or promising too, on traffic and infrastructure issues. and yet its hugs and kisses for ge, which isn't spending a nickel on improving the parking and traffic issues down in the sea port where they might go. square? >> if you look at the offer to ge, it's all about i think a big part -- about investing and public intrastructure. people are reporting $145 million. a large part of that is the state investing on streets, investing in parking, investing in transit. city announced we would be investing in the bridge as part of the ge deal. this is going to leave a legacy of stronger public infrastructure in the sea port district.

>> we were hoping to come together with him and mitigate the development that they're bringing. still in the works. we're not there yet, but i think this is a different deal. this is a deal where there is direct impact where ge is paying taxes and coming to one of our neighborhoods to make sure the infrastructure works for everyone in the neighborhood. sea port. >> but wynn is help promising to deal with the sullivan square issues, right? that impacts boston. >> absolutely. those conversations are going to continue. >> i've heard people saying, and this may be a false equivalent, but money is going to -- public

ge. how can there be money available for that? helipad. and it would only be if there was an area that did not have it and showed a need for it. we've received pretty positive reactions from other corporations in that area to say exactly what we need. we need a public helipad because there are needs for us as well. so these improvements aren't g e restricted. they're not private improvements. they're improvements for the whole district, the whole city. >> i've got to wrap, but is it a question of priorities? i think people -- working class people trying to get to work would like to see the green line or red line. >> absolutely. let me be clear. that's really priority. transit improvement is part of the package to ge. >> listen, we just scratched the surface on this.

blizzard verified here on cape cod. several spots verified blizzard conditions from the cape and islands and up to the south shore as well. nantucket in the vineyard stretching up to marsh field. keep in mind it's three hours consecutive in a row visibility quarter of a mile or less. the vineyard and nantucket had four hours sustained of 35 miles per hour gusts or greater and blizzard conditions. 15.3 inches here. 13.3 on oak bus. sandwich with a foot and born 10 inches of snow. pretty impressive. it's wet and sticky as well. we're talking about the boston comparison too.
