wade and paula ebben. the news on wbz starts right now breaking now, hurricane hermine making land fall. fierce winds and major flooding striking florida. shelves cleared, homes boarded up, and the powerful move right up the east coast next. hard to believe, but this is the first hurricane in strike florida in 11 years. >> and tonight that state's governor is warning that hermine's direct hit is life threatening. the wind, waves, and flooding rains are battering the gulf coast. eric fisher has the latest information, and how the storm could impact us here in new england. >> yes, still a hurricane, 80 miles per hour winds, and

hour working northward. about due south of tallahassee is where it's coming on shore, and now it's a classic looking hurricane. see the bands rotating ashore. numerous tornadoes in the bands, and then the eye itself will move up into the coastline within the next hour or so. hurricane warnings out there around the big bend of florida, but looking to the east coast, tropical storm warnings all the day down into coast of florida, and tropical storm watches extending as far north as new jersey and the jersey shore, so it's going to impact the whole east coast. updated track just in from the hurricane center. moving just off the shore of north carolina into saturday. but then the same track we've seen over the last 24 hour, a big circle at the end. what does the circle mean? it means the storm essentially stops, and slowly drifts

so bottom line for us. tomorrow? beautiful day. saturday is a nice day. dry, increasing cloud cover, but no weather concerns. sunday a dry day for most of us, and the wind increasing. the highest impact day is expected to be labor day itself. high seas, rough surf, minor coastal erosion, winds gusting to 45 miles per -- periods of heavy rain coming off the ocean. more coming up in a little bit. all right, thank you so much. here's what it looks likes in florida tonight. right now folks along the gulf coast bracing for the high winds, torrential rains, and threats of tornadoes. don champion is in panama city beach. >> reporter: good evening. the downpours ended here

the city. hermine is battering other parts of gulf coast. the storm surge chew add way at roads in alligator harbor, florida, and this is been the idea of storm made land fall. >> now we buckle down and play. >> reporter: those stays tied up boats and home, and boarded up high wind, 20 inches of rain, and 20 feet of storm surge. >> i have shutters on the front and east side, and coming down and checking the dines and making sure the boat is secure. >> reporter: in the city of saint mark, the water started rising hours before the storm appeared. florida's governor says hermine is life threatening, and urging everyone to take extra cautions. >> >. remember, remember,

during a storm. >> reporter: watches and warnings are up along the gulf coast and atlantic coast as far north of new jersey. it had been 1,081 days since a hurricane was in the gulf of mexico. schools and universities still closed here because of the storm. also a major three-day star studded music festival was canceled because of the storm. >> our weather team hermine, and share updates through the cbs boston weather app, on facebook, twitter, and our website. and developing news from millford. the driver of this truck accused in a hit and run crash that killed a woman turned himself in.

me you can see a small memorial, a little example of the big impact constable barbara clement had on this town. >> i was in a meeting, and my son call med. >> reporter: they rushed to main street to find a scene they never wanted to see. traffic blocked, police lights flashing, and a beloved friend, the maid of honor as their wedding, gone. >> we are celebrating anniversary on tuesday, the day after labor day. so this is a very tough news that we received. >> reporter: on thursday afternoon police say the 65- year-old was walking to her car when she was struck and killed almost instantly by a tractor trailer. then police say the driver took off. >> video surveillance gave us the vehicle description and we

surveillance images helped, and they pleaded with the public for help. the driver turned himself in. >> i think they said it looks like your truck and he went and turned himself in. >> reporter: the woman's death is more than just a tragic accident for the community. fondly known as sarge she was a town constable and served in the national guard for 30 years. >> people are sad because it's sarge. >> i'm shaken, just shaken, because i knew her all >> reporter: close with the phillips for four decades. >> >. she loved everybody. she didn't care. she'd help you no matter what happened. >> reporter: now investigators are currently questions the driver to figure out what he knew and when. no word if he'll be charged. she leaves behind two brothers, niece, nephews, and a long time partner. >. also tonight a

under arrest. police say she was drunk and high, and stumbling to the wrong house with a little toddler in toe. katie brace is live in arlington, and we know the boy's mother hired her through a popular online service. >> reporter: that's right, the family chose this website to find them a trusted care giver, but police say the care giver, the babysitter was found with the toddler in the street, and in no condition to take ca anyone. arlington police say she was drunk and high on prescription drugs while taking care of a toddler. police arrived for a report of a woman stumbling in the street with a 3-year-old boy. >> it didn't look right. >> reporter: the 51-year-old seen tried to get into the wrong family's house. empty alcohol containers were in her car. >> they used her before, and didn't see anything like that. >> reporter: they found her on

five years of experience. she's familiar with police for motor vehicle and stolen property crimes. >> >. we're trying to find out exactly what care.com did in this case i know they provide an initial check into people. >> reporter: this woman is a nanny in the same neighborhood, and using a similar site that yups background checks. >> it's scary. it makes us all look a statement saying this is disturbing, safety is paramount importance, and when this occurs it hits us very hard. the family of toddler says he's okay. the woman was taken torte hospital, and now -- to the hospital, and now faces a charge of reckless endangerment of a child. katie brace. new at 11:00, scary moments for pilots at logan airport.

airlines jet both reported green laser strikes about 9:00 last night. all planes landed safety. state police and -- safely. state police and the faa are investigating. and two children put on the wrong plane and sent to the wrong cities. tonight neither family is happy about it. julie loncich is live at logan airport with the story. anything, one of these families just wants answer, but legal action could soon follow. two weeks ago this woman's 5- year-old son flew alone for the very first time. his mother says it will also be the last time. >> when i went to pick up my son, my son wasn't there. i was given another boy. >> reporter: cell phone videos

the boarding gate in santiago. he was supposed to land in new york. >> i said oh my god, where did you put him? >> reporter: his passport was mistakenly switched with another 5-year-old. >> she goes to see him. it's not her child. another child with her son's passport. 5-year-old boy. for three hours she believed her son is kidnapped. >> reporter: three at logan, and allow him to call his mother. >> he says i was placed on another airplane. >> reporter: eventually he makes it back to his mother. >> he cried, and then i had him in my hands, thank god. >> reporter: despite the refunded ticket and credit she says she never got an explanation or apology. her attorney is calling for a federal investigation.

fall here, and much more impressive storm developing over the course of the afternoon as it was approaching the florida cost line, so here you -- coastline, so here you see the eye due south of tallahassee, making land fall within the next hour, and then the west coast of florida really looking at a threat for tornadoes which is always a problem with a tropical landing. the friction helps spin up the tornadoes. so it's coming up the coastline, and exiting in north carolina, then moves out tot sea east of new jersey, and then it will stall there, drift around a couple of days. slowly weaken over time, it will be a slow process, and because of hanging out it's really going to churn up the surf. and the reason it's stalling, big ridge of high pressure building over the northeast

could drift sunday, monday, tuesday, wednesday, even into thursday next week just offshore. so the time line, tomorrow beautiful day. 70s. feels like september. dry air, bright skies. wonderful. then saturday gorgeous day, crisp, comfortable sunny. and we stay dry all day. then sunday the drifting northward at this point. increasing cloud cover, especially across far southern new england, and maybe some rain band late in the day, even at this point northern massachusetts into new hampshire, maine, and vermont may all still be dry. monday is the day we have the highest chance of seeing rain. this is also where we'll see some of the strongest wind, and roughest surf. so looking at winds gusting about 20 to 40, maybe 45 miles per hour, and some periods of heavy rain fall.

focuses towards southeast massachusetts. so the best chance of really denting the drought is the cape, islands, areas south of boston. once you go north and west, the totals should drop quite a bit. increasing clouds saturday, sunday a chance of showers developing, especially toward the south coast, and monday is the most wet, damp, and cool day in the 70s. certainly high surf, ri currents, and coastal floodings, but it should be minor. and in terms of wind gust, 20 to 45 miles per hour peaking sunday into monday, and out of the northeast. kind of rooting on rain fall, i know bad timing, but the latest drought update this morning ex- trending the extreme count -- extending the extreme drought down to taunton. so look at the cape, if your plans are here, that's the highest impact, especially late

welcome to met life stadium. the patriots pre-season is over. they end apuleiusing to the giants -- up losing to the giants 17-9. jimmy garoppolo didn't play, but tom brady played the entire first half. he played the whole first half, who knew that was going to happen, and his first time playing a pre-season finale since 2011. first drive, he's picked. but he not a big game for the patriots defense. perkins on the hand off, and he's popped by coleman causing the fumble. take a closer look. mingo there as well. patriots does a turnover, and speaking of mingo he made his debut, and he was all over the field making plays, fighting for a spot.

>> bittersweet kind of feeling. i think everyone is ready for the regular season, but these guys you grow close with, you grow as a team, and the numbers cut down is a tough time, but it makes it exciting, you know, we're all ready for the regular season to go out there. the games really real now. >> coach bill belichick does a great job of getting the team prepared, and they understand what they need to do. i'll be cheering like i don't know how much it helps us win, but that's what you do when you're watching. >> i knew i needed reps to get the feel for the offense, and just get comfortable for everything. felt good to be out there with the guys and getting defense. >> reporter: 22 cuts have to be made on saturday by 4:00, and the patriots have tough decisions.
