>> live from the channel 4 studios in boston, this is wbz news at 6:30. >> and we begin with breaking news tonight. a state trooper is in the hospital right now after being hit by a motorcycle in foxboro. >> the trooper was directing traffic after the patriots game there. jim smith is live in foxboro with l >> reporter: katie and ken, as you can imagine, the investigation is intense right now. authorities say they're just beginning their probe. in fact, this happened right here, just to orient you on route 1, northbound, just south of gillette stadium not too long after the pats game was over. let's take you to video of the scene that we were able to get not long after it happened. about 4:25 this afternoon, the trooper was directing traffic

authorities telling us tonight that he suffered potentially serious injuries. the trooper was taken to boston medical center. again, potentially serious injuries. the exact extent is being analyzed at this point. now, the motorcyclist was also taken to the hospital. he was taken to the medical center. the extent of his injuries are unknown. but police tell us he is expected to face charges. we talked to somebody who came on long afterwards. >> when i got up there, i saw the motorcycle on the side of the road next to a fire hydrant. i assumed he had hit the fire hydrant. but it didn't seem that way afterwards that he was actually before the fire hydrant in the road and the officers were working on him, checking to see if he was all right. it looked like once they found out he was all right, he actually -- the officers sat him up and brought him into custody. >> reporter: once again, just

poppy, david ortiz at fenway park. the theming of the the -- the theme was saying thank you to help win three championships over ten years. he was presented checks for a total of $1 million for children's hospital fund. the rocks announced that the number 34 would be retired at a ceremony next season. ortiz will have a bridge named after him and a street near the t station. and then david solidified members of the winning teams. after receiving the ceremonial first pitch from the president of the dominican republic, ortiz addressed the fans. >> i want to thank all of you, the fans [cheering and applause] >> thank you. thank you so much. baseball's immortal, this was the scene outside of fenway park sunday, two hours before the first pitch. red sox nation lining up to pay tribute to boston's latest legend. >> as soon as he announced his retirement, we knew we had to watch him retire. >> it's a special moment for me, what he has done for the city. >> reporter: the mist in the air matched those in the eyes of many as he stepped up for his final regular season game. >> big clutch moments. the incredible antics on the field, he is just -- hard not to getty motional about baseball. >> reporter: a man who had a front row seat for many of the years made their way back to the scene where so many memories were made. >> we can guess what your favorite moment was. >> yeah. it doesn't get any better than

hoping to get back in the win column. this is not next week. the pats looked awful today. taking on the bills. the bills wasted no time getting on the board. the 7-yard pass for the touchdown. buffalo takes a 7-0 lead. bill belichick looked at the play on his tablet and he thought this is going to be a long game. i hate this tablet. he got the a rough day. 2nd quarter. running. gets popped. loses the ball the bills win 16- 0. bill belichick wasn't happy about it. >> we just have to perform better coach better, play better all the phases of the game. it's that week every week in the national football league. if you don't perform well, you don't do well. every team is good in this league. >> reporter: bill straightforward and a little bit testy right there.

22-year-old caroline liberty was heading west when the two collided. caroline died at the scene. >> seen the vehicle on its roof. all mangled. 22 years old. too young. >> reporter: tom who was a passenger in his wife's car also died. his wife mary was rushed to the hospital with severe injuries. >> pray for the family. they're a wonderful family. great people for the community. and my heart is at a loss. i'm -- i'm in shock worked for tom for five years at the hotel. >> it's devastating. his son is getting married next month. >> reporter: police are investigating to see how and why the two vehicles crashed into one another. we're not clear if speed played a factor. people who live around hearsay people drive down this roadway too fast and this corner is a bit tricky. >> people drive really, really fast down this road. and you know, they just drive too fast. >> my thoughts and prayers go

>> an update to the breaking news that we brought to you the trooper hit by a motorcycle after the patriots game remains at boston medical center with serious injuries. right now the injuries are not believed to be life- threatening. the trooper's name is not being released but the motorcycle operator, jose rodriguez is being treated for injuries at the medical center in boston and will be booked on charges as soon as his medical condition allows. bloomington school

drunk driving charge. >> this is the teched time that a school official there has been in trouble with the law in the last several weeks. state police confirm that the superintendent mary was arrested for oui back in august. the district attorney's office is handling this case. just last month a high school physical education teacher was arrested. the school committee's chairperson issued a brief statement on the latest action situation. we will be meeting in executive session monday night. a statement will be made available after that meeting. well, let's talk about the weather because we keep mentioning that we need the rain. and it actually was a nice change. >> yet it has been upstaged by something way down south, old matthew. >> hurricane matthew. we're watching it. right now it's too early to say what kind of impact it could have late next weekend in new

dangerous storm here. category 4. max winds of 145 miles per hour moving northwest at 5 miles per hour. as it makes its way through the caribbean, towards jamaica and haiti, we have hurricane warnings out in the red with pink areas under a hurricane watch including portions of cuba. the rain threat incredible with this storm. 40 inches of rain possible in southern hatey and the dominican republic and jamaica. it is trending more to the east which is good island. buts potential for flash flooding and life-threatening mudslides for the next couple of days here. here is the track. we expect it to move across the outer portion of haiti here as a category 4 monday afternoon and into tuesday afternoon. landing on cuba and continuing to the north but curving a little bit to the bahamas as a category 3. this will be a category 2 here but off of the southeasterns s. beyond that

the updates when we get them. now we're dealing with the rain and drizzle. most of the heavy rain has moved on. orleans since friday almost 4 inches of rain. nantucket, 3.2. and around boston, we had on either side of an inch of rainfall accumulation. satellite and radar shows no heavy showers now but we still have the clouds in place thanks to an upper level low eventually it will take its time moving out there. here is your hour by hour. we keep the drizzle in overnight tonight. monday morning, areas of patchy fog. mainly dry by the later part of the commute. monday afternoon, maybe a few peeks of sunshine too. that will be wonderful. and we could see an isolated severe storm with maybe the potential for some hail because it is so cold in the upper levels of the atmosphere.

at fenway park today. red sox holding the third and final david ortiz ceremony. honoring one of the best players in franchise history. it was a wonderful sendoff this afternoon at fenway park. the ceremony had it all. ownership announced they would retire his number 34. they donated $1 million to david's children's hospital fund. how about that. there is also a bridge and a drive named the ballpark. and members of the world series winning teams were here, including mike lowell who met with the media after the ceremony. >> i think the story is really good. he came in here as maybe as a favor, we can say. everyone says it was pedro and we see all of the greatness. i don't think it was scripted for him to have all of these at bats. he took advantage of an opportunity and turned it into a hall of fame career. >> reporter: as for the game,

jays to keep their hopes alive against cleveland. down 1-0 and no hit in the 7th. ramirez clears everything left with one swing of the bat. and we're tied 1-1. top of the 8th, jays come right back. troy with the single scores edwin and it's 2-1 bluejays. bottom 9 we go. ortiz with a chance to be a hero. he grounds out. got a huge ovation from the crowd watchi career. red sox lose this one 2-1. >> do you think the last two series have taken away momentum. >> no, i don't. we were in a position to win probably three of these ball games that did get away from us late. but no, this team is confident. we're looking forward to cleveland on thursday. >> reporter: meanwhile the

the tribe gets home field advantage in the series against the sox. so game 1 will be thursday in cleveland. game two on friday. then back to fenway park for game 3 sunday and possibly monday a game 4. so there you have it, the latest. toronto with the victory wins the wild card and home field advantage. they will host baltimore on tuesday and play texas, the winner of that game plays the texas rangers. that's the park. now let's go to more on the patriots. >> talking about the pats, these are the types of games that you're going to have when you have a rookie at quarterback. there will be a couple of mistakes. that will lead to losses much that's what happened to the patriots today. the pats taking on the bills. the bills got ahead from the get-go. shoving and pushing right there. don't push my quarterback.
