moisture drawn up from matthew, giving us that rain today, but it's shifting offshore now. the heaviest rain over southeast massachusetts today, but we had some beneficial rain around boston, and the line is pushing into boston overnight, and the temperatures fall into the 40s. in the morning the rain has moved out, and we'll have a drink northwest wind, and the clouds part, and the afternoon will have temperatures in the upper 50s, and tomorrow we'll have a baseball game. it will be night, but the sky will be clear, and 54, go sox. the rest of the forecast is coming up. and more news tonight, police in vermont say a wrong way driver crashed head on into another car on interstate 89 killing five teenagers. here's more from the satellite center now with the investigation. >> reporter: ken, vermont state police say a man stole a police cruiser moments earlier he crashed his own car into a car

them ages 16 and 15 have died, and their high school community is filled with grief. students, parents, and teachers weep and console each other at harwood high school after learning four of their students died in the crash saturday night. >> it was a tragedy. >> reporter: the fifth student grew up in the went to a private school. >> these students have been together, many of them since kindergarten. >> reporter: friends of the teens killed said they were leaving a concert when a wrong way driver crashed into their car, bursting into flames. paul swan witnessed the whole thing. >> wish i had some way i could help somebody because standing there seeing a car full of people go up in flames was

crashing into the teens stole a police cruiser and caused a second crash of eight cars on a second stretch of highway. no one died there. this 11th grader last saw his class mates on friday. >> it's numbing. it's numbing. >> reporter: and counselors will return to the high school tomorrow. the driver meanwhile has not yet been formally charged. live in the satellite center, witness stand news. two people are dead in nashua, new hampshire after a car went off the ro line last night no. names have been -- night. no names have been released. and one person is dead after hit by a commuter train in new york. they were trespassing. foul play is not suspected. >. and police are looking for the person that shot a 9- year-old girl. the victim will survive. still ahead on the program tonight. >> remembering two police officers shot and killed in california.

after a woman called saying her son was causing a disturbance. one officer that died was a 35- year veteran of the department, and. working an extra shift. the other had just returned from maternity leave. >. travel trouble for a student after hurricane matthew hits south carolina. >> jim smith reports on why a family is so upset with an airline. >> reporter: when hurricane matthew struck south carolina severe flooding, heavy and high winds took a toll. emily's family acted quickly and got her home from college booking her on spirit airlines. she was supposed to return monday morning, but conditions are campus are so bad the university is not yet allowing students back. emily's family tried to get the flight changed, but they say spirit refused saying flights after sunday do not fall under their hurricane matthew policy. >> we don't know when it's safe yet for her to go back because

can't return to campus. so i can't rebook her a flight and spirit's saying that they won't help me out with the situation. >> reporter: emily says if she took the flight monday she'd have no place to say. >> they won't have power or anything right now down there. there's a lot of debris. the campus is very green, it's got a lot of trees and stuff, so there's no a lot of branches down. >> reporter: at airport getting on a flight back to south carolina, the only question is how much it will cost the family. at logan airport, jim smith, wbz news. >> we reached out to the airline, and they say they're looking into this. and we got a lot of much needed rain, but the red sox not appreciating that probably. >> yes, all systems go though

>> just have to get rid of a little more rain. and just a quick look at matthew. such a powerful storm, cat 3 along the carolina coast, they were battered along the florida coast and along the carolinas here with tremendous rains and now matthew is weakened, and pretty much off the charts. it's weakening moving out, and the hurricane center says no more advisories likely this, but it did produce mammoth amounts of rain. 17-inches in georgia, buford, south carolina, 14 inches. virginia beach 12 inches. orlando 8 inches. and some of the tropical moisture right up into new england. not much in central massachusetts, just a few tenths of an inch, but plymouth

half to three and a half inches of rain, so it really was quite beneficial. the most rain that some places have had in one day since september of 2015. had a lot of wind right along the coast as well. some places up to 50 to 60 miles per hour. 50 at rockport and cape anne. and there's a wind advisory especially at the cape and islands today's high in boston was 65, but that was just before dawn. several years ago we had days into the 80s this time of year, but that was not the case today. we have cool days ahead, and the rain is just about out of here, moving off, and becoming much lighter on the cape because we had the tropical moisture, and matthew is still

rain fall, but for us high pressure is in control over the next several days, but we're watching the cold that's now a -- nicole that's now a strong tropical storm and destined to become a hurricane. there's bermuda, and the tomorrow is going to take a track bringing it really close to bermuda, and it could be a category 2 hurricane here as it gets close to the island late wednesday or thursday, so we'll be watching that closely. meantime thanks to greg for this beautiful photo. the foliage is dynamite across the area. look at the highs. upper 50s tomorrow. bright sunshine. clouds on the cape early in the morning, they'll disappear. there's a gusty winds, and nice days tuesday, wednesday, and thursday. partly cloudy, nice pleasant afternoons, light wind in the morning on tuesday. pretty cold, but just a slight chance of a shower on thursday. that's all the rain we get after all the really good rain today. that's it. back to you guys.
