vest and armed with an assault rifle. the gunshots ringing throughout the neighborhood. >> it was rapid, it wasn't like one at a time, separated by seconds, but it was like pop, pop, pop, pop. >> we've got shots fired. i need every officer available to make their way 136 gladstone street. >> reporter: officer cintolo was shot twice, officer morris hit in the leg, a critical artery severed. police say responding officers dragged them to safety while returning fire. an their lives. >> i've got to commend the officers for rushing into that building with no fear whatsoever to rescue two fellow officers. >> reporter: this cell phone video shows the frantic rush to get the men to the hospital. police say figueroa was shot and killed in the exchange of gunfire. he's a boston constable who runs his own security business. his vehicle towed from the

deadly force. but officer morris told the commission he is grateful to his fellow officers. >> i want to thank this particular officer. he saved my life. and so he knows how close he was to death. >> reporter: police remain outside the home here. they say figueroa was not licensed to carry a firearm in massachusetts and they don't know why he armed himself. officer cintolo and morris remain in the intensive care unit. commissioner evan says expected to recover. reporting live from east boston i'm beth germano wbz news. >> the two officers shot weren't the only officers who needed help. others put themselves in the line of fire to rescue their wounded brothers. we have live pictures for you right now. it is outside the precinct in east boston where many people have gathered for a prayer vigil for the injured officers. both of those officers would work in that building there. liam martin has more now on how

tonight. >> those officers risked their lives to save their wounded comrades as you said. seconds counted with both of them just bleeding badly. >> reporter: matt morris a 12- year vet was shot in the leg. apparently the bullet hit his artery. richrich cintolo was shot in the throat and arm. >> it is an instant shock. your thoughts, your hopes, you're praying for everything to go well after the fact. >> reporter: the former transient cop nearly lost all of his blood when he was shot in the leg during the watertown shootout with the tsarnaev brothers. >> it definitely rings true. but from what i hear up to this point that it looks like some of the things, the changes, the training, the tools that went into effect after the marathon and after my shooting. hopefully it helps to save the officer's lives. >> reporter: donahue spoke to

conference in san diego to talk about his recovery after the marathon bombing. in donahue's presentation, it about their life-saving critical injury and their recovery as the timing of that presentation in san diego given this shooting, it is chilling. paula? >> liam, thank you. billboards along highways tonight are broadcasting support for police. like this one, which says that our thoughts are with the boston police department. boston police and mayor community to give blood. they say the officers needed transfusions. if there is one thing you can do to help, it is to donate blood. tonight governor charlie baker is also giving his support to the police department saying that the state's police officers are leading the nation with their training programs. >> the best way we can protect officers is to make sure that they are very well trained and very well schooled in what it is they need to do when they're

this one are infrequent and few and far in between. >> we're learning a lot more about the suspect. kirk figueroa was just sworn in recently as a boston constable. he served in the army reserve and was a bounty hunter. jim smith is live with a look at the suspect's details. >> reporter: kirk figueroa does not appear to have any close relatives living here in boston says that he hasn't even lived here for very long. the question tonight is how could this have happened? >> reporter: very shocked, yeah. i couldn't believe it. >> reporter: neighbors here in this east boston neighborhood say they can never imagine that kirk figueroa would be involved in a shootout with police. investigators say there's no evidence this was an ambush, but his facebook page does include postings of videos dealing with various police shootings and other incidents involving african american

country. still neighbors are stunned that he would be involved in a bloody scene like last night. >> i was surprised when hi seen his picture on the news, you know. i was trying to figure out who it could be. >> reporter: does that seem to square what you know about him that he could be capable of something like that? >> no, not even close. >> reporter: according to his bio, he says that he founded figueroa who was an army reserve veteran who spent eight years in the military police battalion calling himself a californiant mixed marshal arts practitioner. figueroa was also a constable in the city of boston with some police power. >> this is ridiculous, you know, he is working almost like an officer of the state. and shooting at other officers. >> reporter: but what would have lead him to put full body armor on and arm himself to the tee last night. neighbors say it was an argument with the fellow tenant over heat. >> my husband happened to run

that lives in the house when she said that it started over the heat that it was too hot and turn it down and that is how it happened. >> an argument over heat? >> yeah. >> reporter: back here live in's boston you're looking at the home where all of this happened where you can see all these hours later, they're still on the scene. police crime tape are still blocking the streets here as authorities try to gather clues. live in east boston tonight jim smith wbz right now we are looking live once again at this vigil, which is being held. officers are gathering there. the video is frozen right there for a moment, but these are officers that are gathering outside the boston police department where those officers served. we'll have more on the suspect's past. we also have an eye team investigation on how he became a constable despite red flags. also tonight some breaking

here in massachusetts. he could get out of prison sooner rather than later. federal officials are now calling for his early release. he's battling tongue and prostate cancer. he has served five years of his eight-year sentence. dimasi was convicted of steering state contracts in exchange for kickbacks. a judge, however, must approve this recommendation before it happens. well a cruise ship here in town hit a snag. >> it is the brush with the local bridge. we have the video next. and bengals will certainly have their work cut out for them on sunday when the patriots will be there at tight end. we have sports next. a couple of rain showers this evening with a big cool down tomorrow. we will top 70 today.

court paperwork like lawsuits and evictions to the public. they must be approved by the city council. but the eye team ryan kath is here with some -- the i-team ryan kath is here with some of the details that he discovered. >> reporter: constables do have the power to make an arrest. -- a divorce about the history on figueroa. they wrote that "he gave me black eyes, choked me, pulled out my hair, verbally humiliated me, and abused me on several different occasions." there was an indictment in 2010 when figueroa faced a felony for setting his own car on fire to collect insurance money. he was also charged for impersonating a private detective. on multiple occasions on recorded telephone conversations, he held himself

private detective. despite some of the red flags, boston police still gave figueroa the green light to get his constable license. >> nothing that would prohibit us from issuing him a constable license. again, we didn't have the legal right to check on the constable license. because again that only civiles service process. he did have a record, but from what i understand nothing in massachusetts. >> a felony should have been a disqualification in boston. but a spokesperson told me as a first-time offender figueroa was able to remove that blemish from his record after completing probation and that is why he could truthfully answer that he was not convicted of a felony on the constable application. for the i-team ryan kath wbz

a cruise ship passing through the cape cod canal. >> yes, this is the viking star cruise ship sailing under the buzzer bay railroad bridge when you can hear it there, it clipped a part of the bridge. no word on any injurieses. the passengers and onlookers say they could definitely hear the scrapes. it's one thing to have a truck go under the bridge, but you think ships would know. >> how does that happen? is there you could have? don't you have to measure? >> you would think. >> it doesn't make any sense. a lot of people go to bermuda at this time of the year, not a good day to be there today. >> when you look at the hurricane that they are showing you, it passed right over bermuda. >> exactly. they were inside the eye late this morning. i was looking at one of my facebook memories, it was on bermuda celebrating my anniversary this date last year. if we went this year we would have been there for a category

amazing. there is damage for sure, but they build two hurricanes out there. they have very strict building codes. you can see the center as they went right over bermuda this morning. there is some damage, but it wouldn't be the same type of what we would see here in the united states with the similar storm. this is a category 3 major hurricane. there's only been seven since 1851 that have come this close to bermuda. now it will move off to the east and weaken as they encounter cooler waters. 'v scope and the damage over the next 24 hours. here at home we have the sunshine to start. a few rain showers are moving through with a couple of sprinkles. that'll be about it. this front is sweeping through. behind it, clearing skies. we'll also have those falling temperatures and increasing wind overnight tonight. temps right now in the 60s are going to start to drop. there's the air that we're watching. those 40s that we see now will be the overnight lows tonight.

city. that wind will switch around to the northwest about 10 to 20 with some stronger gusts. so it will start to feel a lot colder. tomorrow morning a pretty brisk start to our friday. bright and chilly with the winds out of the northwest with those temps in the 40s. they will feel more like the 30s. towards the rest of the day, bright blue skies and the puffy cumulus clouds with a brisk breeze, but all told it will be a pretty nice autumn day, which is really on target for this time of the year, which is where we should be in e 60s to the lower 50s. but the winds will feel colder. the coldest temps will be across the highest terrain in the mid-50s. tomorrow night the wind will go slack. with that a very cold friday night is expected. weathers services put out a freeze watch here. the only issue for areas that have not had a frost yet, but it looks like a widespread killing frost or probably the first of the season for many towns. in the coastal communities and far southeastern mass will likely avoid the coldest of the temperatures, but this will

if you want to extend it a little bit, tomorrow night will be the night to cover your plants. after that the high pressure will be in control for this weekend, making it a cool and beautiful saturday with a little more cloud cover on sunday, but a warmer day as the winds move southwesterly. saturday's sun with less winds and the highs near 60. sunday we will have a chance for topping 70. the clouds will be on the increase, but a dry and pleasant day and great for the patriots as tom brady returns home. 69 degrees at kickoff with no r across must of massachusetts, definitely northern new england with a great color right now. and even into westbrookfield some nice colors from steve there. thanks for sending in the pictures there. all told that northern new england is where you will have the best color and a great weekend for the road trip and the weather is certainly cooperating. here is your accuweather seven- day forecast, rain showers are arriving into monday with a mild start for next week and
