. live from the channel 4 studios in boston this is wbz news this morning. good morning. thanks are for joining us. >> it's thursday, october 27th. right now at 6:00 smoke fills an orange line train, passengers have to kick out windows to get off the train. >> a cab slams i about the man driving. he works for uber, what witnesses say he was doing before the crash. >> andelman elderly woman missing for 3 days found alive, the surprising clue that led an off duty firefighter to find her. >> and new numbers from our poll in the presidential race. but we want to start off with danielle niles this morning. and we've got some weather moving in too. >> a little bit of everything

boston colder than this time yesterday, 22 in keene, 31 in worcester, another cold and a bit of a frost start. clouds will be on the increase, quiet start this morning but notice i'm tracking areas of snow and rain back to our west through new york. we may get a stray shower inside of 128 between now and myth day that will come in off the ocean otherwise the clouds thicken and snow in the bushing insurance and the hills of connecticut develop through mid-day. we see rain fill in between 2 and 4 p.m. it's steady rain after that. going to pour overnight tonight with rain tapering off between 6 and 8 a.m. tomorrow morning. so the morning commute will feature improvement tomorrow, otherwise clouding up with an isolated shower this morning, coastal showers through lunchtime and the rain fills in, again that mix with 1 to 3 inches of know in parts of the berkshires. we've got some slow downs south of the city right now.

happening on route 24. it makes it's way all the way up as you approach 128. also slow on 128 and route 3 in braintree and the expressway is stop and go. to our north we have slow traffic on 93 south and on route 3 south in lowell. panic on the orange line as smoke fills the train, passengers smashing out windows to escape. the mbta says an overheated motor is to blame. >>re station where all the chaos happened last night. . >> reporter: that chaos unfolded when the train was full of people heading home from work at the time they had no idea what was going on creating a lot of fear and panic. . >> the actual car i was on jerked. it smelled like brake smoke. >> reporter: passengers capture moments of panic as a train begins to fill with smoke during

so the first thing on my mind was getting out of there. >> reporter: the mbta says a motor likely overheated but with no announcements and no understanding of what was happening fear set in. >> people started to panic. the doors wouldn't open. so people tried to get the men in the front to pry the doors open. they wouldn't budge so somebody smashed the window. >> reporter: according to officials the door didn't open because the train had moved away from the platform. >> i saw people panicking and i just went into -- when you're a first responder you don't think you just do and you're trained and my thought was we need some fresh air. >> reporter: once safe back inside the station first responders treated several people for smoke inhalation, 3 were taken to the hospital for further evaluation. service on the orange line is back to normal this morning. the mbta says they're investigating what caused that

. and the t is continuing to investigate that incident on the orange line saying that passengers safety is its top priority. a similar situation happened in january 2015, a system failure filled a train with smoke. passengers had trouble getting out of one of the doors and some did have to kick out the windows. the mbta does hold training drills respond to these kinds of emergency evacuations one is scheduled for this saturday. a damaged suv pulled from a home and we've learned the driver worked for uber. he had a passenger in the car at the time. we're live this morning with all the details. . >> reporter: boston police say that uber driver was trying to make a left turn when he collided with another vehicle before slamming into this home. even with the impact and

but able to walk away. a witness saw this entire scene take shape. >> i heard a boom down that end which made me go to the corner. >> reporter: he asked not to be on camera but only his words to tell the story. >> i seen a white car flying up here doing like 70 with no brakes smack into the wall. >> reporter: a crash at the dead end of grove street. >> didn't even try to stop. he was going too fast. >> authorities the damage is likely easily repairable as only a renovated pantry was impacted but much is still under investigation extra innings investigation including what may have happened minutes before. >> i heard there was an accident further down and residents of this area said they believe this vehicle struck another vehicle. >> reporter: no one was inside the home at the time and the driver and passenger were said to be conscious and alert even

witnessed it. >> i thought he was dead. he was going so fast. i'm surprised they both got out of the car. . >> reporter: taking a live look here at this home you can see the damage is quite impactful. authorities were initially concerned that the wall just on the right side of that vehicle might collapse in but they have said at this point there is no structural damage in terms of the integrity of that bin as for charges involved in this crash that is not -- has not yet been released. a box truck driver cited after his truck slammed into a home causing significant damage. police say the driver was putting something in the back of the truck when it started to roll. it continued rolling for about 150 feet. the homeowner was not home at the time.

3 days after she went missing. an off duty firefighter volunteering in that search found her in the backyard yesterday. he spotted a bowl on the ground and remembered that she had been eat ago bowl of ice cream before she disappeared. officials say she may have been using a boat and camper as shelter during the cold nights. >> the fact that a 75-year old woman at 100 pounds survived what, 3 nights now at 30-degree temperatures the >> she was taken to lowell general hospital. authorities say they are hopeful she will make a full recovery. to campaign 2016, a new poll shows hillary clinton leading donald trump by 9 points nationwide. both candidates will be in key battleground states today. hillary clinton will campaign with first lady michelle obama in north carolina. yesterday clinton's campaign announced she'll host

pennsylvania. that arrives by mid-day. the clouds thicken for the rest of us with rain moving in as well. 46 our high. hour by hour through lunchtime r possible inside of 128 coming in off the ocean. at the same time areas of snow will pick up through the berkshires. we may get covered surfaces through the afternoon especially with elevation if you're traveling in western massachusetts keep tha roads will become slick in spots. otherwise rain fills in between 2 and 4 p.m. becomes study through the evening hours, snow changes to rain in the berkshires and pours late this evening overnight tonight. this is the map at 3:30 in the morning tomorrow. areas of heavy rain could be an area of isolated thunderstorm in there. between 4 and 6 a.m. a lot of rain will be tapering off. 6 a.m., downpours on the cape.

of that wraps up so there will be improvement for the morning commute tomorrow. how much snow is going to fall? i wouldn't be surprised to see a couple flakes in the very beginning, places like worcester county, no impact, 1 to 3 inches of accumulations up into vermont including the berkshires especially above a thousand feet. rainfall half an inch to an inch and a half. overnight tonight into early tomorrow morning. the wind may be an issue too. it's going to start to ramp up this evening overnight tonight into early tomorrow morning. this is the map at 6 a.m. gusts 40 to 45 miles per hour at the coast. we may see gusts exceed 50 miles per hour on the cape. so isolated pockets of wind damage may occur. otherwise the rain ends some breaks of sun in the low 50s, clouds on saturday

possible by sunday, halloween still looking dry and quiet falling to the 40s or trick or treaters. most of the slow spots are south of the city 124 north to 128 is a tough ride right now. there's also heavy traffic on 95 to 128. your stop and go at the split on 128 and also route 3 in braintree and the expressway is stop and go. it our north we have slow traffic on 93th over on route 3 south in lowell. well if you're flying out of logan airport anytime soon you'll see a new addition to the security force and she is really cute. this is jazz and she and dogs like her are now screening passengers at logan for the first time. they're trained specifically to detect explosives by sniffing the air around a person as they walk through the airport. and you can see jazz's behavior change when she picks up a suspicious

a frightening attack to tell you about. 3 men in clown masks went after a woman in are. police say they showed up at her house, called out her name and when she opened the door they attack her. she fought them off and only suffered minor injuries. one massachusetts town tried to keep teen-agers from getting into trouble this halloween. police are asking stores not to sell them items used in the list includes toilet paper, soap, shaving cream, eggs and spray paint. the ban is voluntary, it's been in effect for more than 10 years and it seems to work. >> let's the kids go out and have fun not the pranks the little kids go trick or treating. >> right. another local senator taking on donald trump. >> the message he wants to send to the nominee. >> and early voting kicking off in massachusetts some communities making it easier to

. welcome back. changes at the top of the mbta after $600,000 in mistakes. according to the boston globe the t replaced 6 of i resource managers when consultants determined that 20% of t employees were incorrectly billed for health and retirement benefits. the t says several of those managers resigned and at least one retired. dining hall workers at harvard will return to work today after a 3-week strike all but one worker voted yesterday to approve a new contract. it includes a minimum annual salary of $35,000, and no increase to health care costs. it's reported that normal dining hall

u.s. women's open should not be held on a golf course owned by donald trump among them massachusetts senator ed markey. he sent a letter to the u.s. golf association this week saying the trump brand degrades women and they have a chance to accepted a message that those attitudes will not be tolerated. trump's star often the hollywood walk of fame will have to be repaired. somebody vandalized it yesterday. crews say it will tse fix. early voting is off to a strong start in massachusetts. election officials say 130 people have voted by yesterday afternoon. this is the first year early voting has been offered in the state. this weekend hundreds of towns and cities will be open for early voting on saturday and a few dozen will make voting available on sunday. and new this morning, a message for new hampshire voters from actor ben affleck. >> new hampshire is just like

i just want what's best for my kids. when i hear arguments that massachusetts needs more charter schools, i think: what about the students in all of our schools? every new charter takes away more money from the existing public schools. we can't afford to drain even more money from our kids' schools because they're already losing so much. i'm not just standing up for my own kids; i'm fighting for yours, too.

the mary cburke elementary school 32 degrees. 34 at logan right now, 22 in keene. increasing clouds already but the sun is coming up just over 40 minutes from now. there may be a spot shower in eastern massachusetts through mid-day and we wait for rain to arrive as showers first but it really fills in between 2 and 4 p.m. so even though it's a dry start this morning y going to want to pack the umbrella or the raincoat because by the evening it's raining a lot of spots. it's going to be mixed with snow in the berkshires and the rain comes down hard. overnight pouring between 6 and 8 a.m. the rain is going to wrap up. i'm going to break down the damaging wind thread for tonight and tomorrow coming up in a few.

moments as that orange line train began to fill with smoke during rush hour wednesday evening. the mbta says a motor likely overheated but with no announcements and no understanding what was happening fear began to set in. panic started to grow when the doors would not open. the mbta says that's because the train had already left the platform. so people began breaking windows to escape. >> people started to panic. the doors wouldn't open. people tried to get the men in the they wouldn't budge so somebody smashed a window and we all jumped out. >> reporter: several people were treated for smoke inhalation and 3 people brought to the hospital for further evaluation. service on the orange line is back to normal this morning and the mbta is investigating what caused that motor to overheat. . an uber driver slams into a home with a passenger in the car.

crash. wbz is live with what those witnesses had to say. >> reporter: police say this driver was trying to make a left turn when he slammed into another vehicle just before crashing into this building. you can see the extent of the damage here no one was seriously injured which is certainly a miracle when you see the damage. witnesses say the small suv involved was driving incredibly fast and authorities are look nothing whether he was involved in a hit and run before this grove street crash. the homeowner was not at home at the time. and we're told the uber driver and the passenger were not only conscious and alert but also walking around after this crash. . >> i thought they was dead because he was going so fast. i'm surprised they both got out of the car. . >> reporter: taking another

integrity of this building is sound. they were initially afraid that the inside of that garage area was going to collapse over into that garage, that did not happen. they were able to shore it up in a way to prevent that from happening. as to charges in this case this morning we've not been told whether or not the driver will be charged. . 6:35 hundreds attended a vigil for the 4 young when a wrong-way driver hit them on 495. people held candles and balloons in memory of the 4. family members thanked the crowd for their support and remembered the boys. . >> looking at these guys right here that's craig stanley right here. he was doing positive things. he said i love

he'll see me soon. >> police say they're still investigating what caused the 31-year old driver to enter the highway in the wrong direction. today police will be patrol ago popular trail after a woman says a cyclist exposed himself and then tried to grab her. this happened on the old rail trail. a stretch of the trail was closed for several hours as police searched for the suspect. >> people use it all for walking, jogging, walking dogs, biking. they use it pretty much every day. >> beads things can happen anywhere. >> the victim told police the man was about 5-6, 5-7. she says he was wearing a gray winter hat with a ski mask. . the victim of an attempted break in now in trouble with the law. new hampshire police say a homeowner grabbed a gun and fired a shot when someone tried

the wood for the suspect but didn't find him. they say they did find a marijuana growing operation inside the home, however. no word yet on what charges the homeowner might face. 2 cape doctors say patients with terminal illnesses should have the right to die on their own terms. this week they filed a lawsuit blocking criminal prosecution of doctors who prescribe lethal doses. the statute attorney general and the cape and islands district attorney as defendants. the marine corps is blaming pilot error for a mid-air collision that killed 12 marines the marines were on a night time training mission at the time of that crash. and new underwater video this morning of that crash site. this is the wreckage that investigators were taking a closer look at. they say poor light, a lack of training also

damaging after shocks in central italy 2 months after a deadly earth quake there. the mayor of one town says their church and other buildings were heavily damaged by the powerful after shocks. one man even died of a heart attack possibly brought on by the shaking but there are no other reports of any serious injuries. in august nearly 300 people died when a major quake struck 2 neighboring towns. donald trump heads to ohio after reignite ago feud with spotter. >> head high captain kahn would be alive today. >> reporter: in an interview with abc news donald trump used the memory of a fallen muslim soldier to once again attack hillary clinton's support of the iraq war. >> we made a mistake in going in and barack obama and hillary

we do have some clouds but a couple of spritzs of rain. there's going to be a couple of showers that come in off the ocean, the clouds are going to thicken up and rain arrives 46 for a high today. there will be areas of snow that develop first check it out through mid-day berkshires hills of connecticut, that will shift e between 2 and 4 p.m. rain will advance into southern new england. it may be mixed with a couple wet flakes in the very beginning impact in worcester county and that's why you want to have the umbrella and raincoat with you this morning even though it's a dry start because your evening commute is going to feature a lot of wet weather. 1 to 3 inches of accumulation. it is going to rain and rain hard overnight tonight tomorrow predawn to 3 to

heaviest rain comes through maybe a few rumbles of thunder. 6 a.m., notice most of the rain is shipping out of here although north and west of boston still some pockets of rain and the cape and islands as well but between 6 and 8 we're all drying out. so improvement for your morning commute but an active 24 hours of wet weather, a few flakes may change to rain no impact in central massachusetts one to 3 inches ofum mid-afternoon get snow-covered roads in the berkshires especially with elevations so use caution. rainfall amounts half an inch to an inch and a half for most of us. there may be a few locally higher elements where any thunderstorms develop. localized flooding ponding water on the roadways may result but most of that overnight tonight. swindled going to be an issue too. it's going to ramp up tonight from 11 p.m. until 10 a.m.

we have a wind advisory for all of eastern massachusetts includes the city of boston where i think we could see gusts of over 40 miles per hour. strongest winds will be focused on the cape gusts to 55 will be possible very early tomorrow morning before the sun comes up that may be strong enough to cause isolated pockets of damage, otherwise just breezy in the afternoon with the sun breaking out, upper 50s on saturday, sunday a couple of showers possible halloween still looking dry and quiet falling into the treating time and looking pretty quiet too through mid-week with temperatures rebounding. here's the reason for all of that back up on 24 north, a disabled vehicle right here at the top of 128. traffic is backed up down to avon and also backed up on route 3, another disabled vehicle as you make your way to the split this morning. we have more traffic as we head out west an accident
