this is wbz news this morning. good morning. 5:00. i am chris mckinnon. >> i am kate merrill. it is friday, october 28, and it has been a very messy night. >> the snow is falling on central and western massachusetts. several spinoffs reported in the sturbridge area while closer to the coast, it was heavy rain and the big story today -- this morning -- it will be the winds. danielle niles. it has gusted to 50+ on the cape and i think the core is done but we may see gusts of two 45 miles per hour and the rain shipping out which is od pushing through ryan, portsmouth, new hampshire, along 95 going in the next 40 minutes. still light downpours at the coastline and out over cape cod, long route 6 from -- a stretching east towards brewster, orleans, chatham, and continuing to push off to the north and east. lighter showers all the way from leominster, lunenburg, up to pepperell, into shirley and these are later for the most part but the road to see the roads are damp and it can make it slick current wind -- wind gusts are 30 miles per hour. the strongest was up to 36

on nantucket but we have a wind advisory that is up at the immediate coastline, just a drop to four parts of plymouth and bristol county but the wind may gusted 40, 45 over the next few hours. we will see a lot of clouds sticking around today. there may be a couple of peeks of sunshine but i do not think that they will be widespread. 52 in boston and we will stay steady in the lower 50s today. we are in the 40s right now and we will rebound a bit this afternoon. you may want to have the umbrellas, left over shower, inland shower through lunchtime and then mid-40s with a couple of light showers for the ride home. we have got a weekend to talk about the details. let's take a look at the traffic. happy friday. a live look at traffic into the o'neill tunnel, left-hand side of the screen, things are picking up. no issues getting to the city. it is a quick 10 minute ride from braintree to the pike but remember to use caution. the roads are wet and there are puddles. to the north, all major routes into the city are looking

and swat teams around a new hampshire motel after reports of shots fired. this is at the motel in hampton park the unit leader reports a man was found dead in one of the motel rooms hours after he fired shots at police. the motel was evacuated and police block to the road and told residents to stay away. we will continue following this and bring you updates as soon as we get them. a scare for mike pence. >> an airplane -- with his staff and reporters -- it skidded off of the runway in new york for the 737 eastern airlines charter was landing in cold and rainy conditions at laguardia. the airplane came down hard, overshot the runway, leaving a huge gas before coming to a stop in the grass. the governor pence tweeted his gratitude to first responders saying so thankful everyone is safe. donald trump reassured supporters of that mike pence was okay. >> i just spoke to our future vice president and he is okay. do you know that he was in a big accident with an airplane? the airplane skidded off of the

>> hillary clinton personally tweeted, saying, quote, glad to hear mike pence, his staff, secret service and the crew are all safe. mike pence says he will back on the campaign trail today and the ntsb is investigating. especially designed safety system is credited with stopping the airplane. the cement like that is engineered for the wheels to sink into, safely slowing down and stopping an airplane if it overshoots runway. that is what left the gas on the runway. the system is installed at high risk airports like laguardia and logan airport in boston. part of the nantucket airport was shut down when a private airplane skidded off of the runway. officials say that the landing gear collapsed when a touchdown. no one was hurt and operations

it is about to become a thing of the past. electronic polling begins tonight and the tollbooth will soon start coming down. nicole jacobs is live along the pike in weston with some good news for drivers not ready for the change. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. let's say that getting those ez pass transponders has not been so easy for some commuters as they prepare for the tollbooth to completely go away. mascot is giving -- mascot is giving a six-month grace periods so it should allow some commuters to breathe easier. only a few hours remaining. >> i used to go through the cash lane and i think that they should have it still open, at least one. >> reporter: all of the tollbooth will be no more. it is here. mass. -- they have seen the frustrations so a six-month grace. it has been granted. >> if you are ordering it online today, you will not have a today. >> reporter: the system has

the customer service line has been busy. the website is not working as commuters tried to prepare for the rollout of these gantries. the grace period is saving many who do not have transponders. that pay by plate invoice will be mailed. you pay for the, up five for a transponder and you receive a credit for the difference in price but if you pay late and you will be penalized either way, ready or not, go live, it happens tonight. taking a live look at the westin tollbooth getting a lot of action in the early morning. i can tell you that the call center will shut down this evening and it will start up again next week. this will allow them it to reboot the system, if you will. also they are extending call service center hours. this is to allow people to have a few more days to try to prepare in addition to the six- month period and that extension will happen on saturday and sunday but the good news for those that have maybe procrastinated a little bit, a

moment, the new all electronic tolling gantries go live. more than 100 police -- details along with 100 workers and supervisors will be on the clock for go time. this weekend come on saturday, construction set up continues at existing toll plazas and on sunday night, tollbooth demolition begins. you can expect the drivers to be routed to the right and to the left of existing toll plazas as the center areas are torn down and paved over. these detours will be in place until november 22. phase 2 of the project begins and drivers will be routed through the center as the demolition begins on the side tollbooth >> this entire process is expected to be complete by the end of next year. all that -- on your screen are tips to help you get through this. massdot says that you should slow down inactive construction areas, consider traveling during off-peak hours and allow extra time and use common courtesy when changing lanes and merging. finally, minimize distractions like your cell phone. massdot is putting out more

lot of us. look at the observation, chatham, 1.46 inches of rain, boston picking up 1.21 inches, worcester, lawrence, over 1 inch, norwood under that and most of the steadiest rain is pushing out of the region. there are lingering showers but the heaviest downpours are pushing to the north, out of the new hampshire seacoast going into york county, maine -- maine. stretching along the route 6 you will get ponding of water and big puddles so ca leaves on the ground and the wet areas on the roads, that becomes a little bit slick so be mindful all the way from jasper, and then we have areas of light rain and left upper showers, fitchburg, and most of this -- again it is light for the most part there will be a lingering showers between now

north and we stay mainly cloudy throughout the afternoon. i would not be surprised if on the backside we get a couple of additional showers that fire up. mid to late afternoon. once again, they will be fairly light but it will stay a little bit unsettled during the course of the day. the peak when the gusts -- gusts overnight -- 58 miles per hour, fairhaven, around 50, nantucket, 44 and plymouth , 42. i think that the damaging winds threat is done because the heaviest rain has moved offshore. the wind advisory is up, right at the coastline, still and we might so out over 40 miles per hour. the rest of the day is plain old windy and this is the hour by hour forecast you will notice 20 until 35 miles per hour but -- adding a bit of chilled to the air throughout the afternoon. temperatures in the 40s, low 50s, and that is where we are right now in a lot of spots. boston is at 52 so we are staying steady, partly cloudy tonight, 35 to 40 in the suburbs, 41 downtown, the wind, 10 to 20, and the weekend is looking pretty good. tomorrow i think clouds building and we will have some showers to the north, most of

dry tomorrow and dry on sunday. we start with sunshine and the clouds should building. there will be shower activity but there are signs that it may stay far enough south that most of the weekend is going to be dry with no issues. 55, 62, high temperatures for tomorrow, gusty southwest wind, and then we push 55, 60, and even milder, 61 in taunton, 63 bedford, so sunday is looking like a seasonal day. halloween, we cool off a bit but it will be dry, the 40s for trick-or-treating, and you look at the warm-up, upper 50s on tuesday, mid-sixties on wednesday and we should be around 60, isolated shower later on thursday.

giving drivers a six-month grace period. they say to pay for the bill, apply for the transponder, and you will be credited the difference in price. starting this weekend, the traffic will be routed to the sides of existing toll plaza so that crews can remove the center tollbooths. investigators are trying to figure out what caused a crash in milford. an elderly driver was killed. the car apparently hit a curb, flips, and burst into flames. the police said that they had reports of an erratic driver just before the crash. the victim apparently had a doctors appointment that morning. a man hit and killed on the pike in central massachusetts -- a 38-year-old man parked in the breakdown lane in warren. he got out of his vehicle and he was hit and killed by a tractor-trailer. they don't know why he stopped on the highway or why he ended up stepping into the road. no charges have been filed. details about the uber driver slammed into this building. investigators say that the 50- year-old was involved in another accident minutes before

they think that accident caused him to lose control of the suv. most of the drivers infractions are minor for things like speeding but the license was suspended several times. he and his passengers suffered minor injuries. a special bond growing out of a terrible tragedy. an off-duty sheriff's deputy who helped end a stabbing rampage is naming his canine after one of the victims and striking up a friendship with that man's widow. jon keller has more. >> reporter: good morning. let's take a break from end was a negative news by reflecting on the story of rosemary keep and james crane. two strangers, front together under the worst possible circumstances. they have given us all a lesson in grace under pressure.

fresh from murdering an 80-year- old woman and wounding her daughter, started attacking random customers, including a pregnant waitress in a restaurant. luckily for her, george keith was having dinner with his wife rosemary. he saw what was happening and he jumped in to stop of the rampage. george keith suffered fatal stab wounds, but his intervention gave plymouth county deputy sheriff james creede time to draw his gun and kill the murder. it was a shocking crime at now and that investigation has concluded, the actions were fully justified he and his wife and george keith the widow met with immediate yesterday to share their experience and it turns out that they and heath have become fast friends. rosemary keith has honored her husband's work as an art teacher at new bedford regional folk tech high school by raising money for scholarships in his name. and every time i see her on television, i am florida by her poise and graciousness. the same can be said of the creeds who misses he says have been supremely supportive of

north and west. there may be some showers that impacted the 128,000 the next half-hour. you want the umbrella with the. the showers are not the main event and that was the heaviest rain that came through overnight so we are seeing a drying trend with a lot of clouds this afternoon and i think that some of the showers may linger into the afternoon, so that is why i want to say that you want to have but they will be light for the most part. the wind advisory is until 10:00 a.m. although for the cape and the islands it changed, and it has been extended until 11:00 p.m. even though they damaging wind threat has subsided, it will pick up, particularly this evening as the wind shifts around on the backside of the storm. we may see gusts, 40, 45, that will cause isolated small

down. temperatures and low 50s but i have to say they are falling into the 40s as we go throughout the afternoon. so it does turn cooler, particularly for the second half of the day. what about the weekend? we start with sunshine tomorrow, and the clouds building. there is a warm front most of the showers will be to the north. i cannot rule out a quick shower around early afternoon but most of the day is dry tomorrow, sunday we start with sunshine, the clouds are building in late in the day, and there is a cold front coming in but a lot of the moisture may stay far enough south that most of sunday ends up dry. high temperatures will be above 55, 60 des and on sunday. this is actually fairly normal for this time of the year. the wind, by the way, on saturday will be gusty, 10 to 20, not as strong as today, middle and upper 50s for sunday and the halloween, after that, we have had so many extremes. we are not anticipating many
