[upbeat music] hi, welcome back to "hometime." well, we've been kind of gradually trying to wrap things up here at creekside. well today we finally wrap things up! famous last words. [laughs] it's been a lot of fun exploring all the different techniques, materials, and systems that go into building a new house in the 21st century, but we do have a couple more things to talk about before we wrap it up. the first thing we want to talk about
3:02 am
the 4k tv's that you've been hearing about, as well as some very advanced audio processing and delivery. and you might not realize your home wifi system could be the basis for some new lighting controls, so we'll talk about equipment that can do just that. well, it's gonna be nice to wrap everything up. stick around to see how it turns out. [upbeat music] fios is not cable. we're wired differently.
3:03 am
atson to beat the local sled jump record, fly, gary, fly. ...his friend can download 13 versions of the perfect song... ...his sister can live stream it... ...while his mom downloads how to set a dislocated shoulder. get 150 meg internet with equal upload and download speeds, tv and phone for this amazing price. cable can't offer speeds this fast at a price this good. only fios can. [upbeat music] to finish off our lower level home theater. going to be staging everything here as we get it all set up. and we've been planning for this since the very beginning so we'd have all of our wires and cables all set and ready to go. the last major step was installing the entertainment cabinets which provide space not only for the tv, speakers and processors,
3:04 am
storage as well. you might recall that those cabinets actually turn the corner there and incorporate the family room fireplace. so it's all wrapped together very nicely into a well-designed and very elegant package. all right, well, we left a spot here for a 65-inch led television. we want to go with one that's 4k capable. it should be a nice size given the, what we've got here for a great room. so let's head to the store, take a look and see what's available in televisions today. i think you might be surprised at some of their capabilities. fun looking at these televisions ... so um i gotta, i gotta believe everything you're selling here now is a smart tv, right? they are. most tv's that we sell are smart tv's. what's great about smart tv's is that by the click of a button you can just pull up the smart hub here and then you have access to netflix, hulu, pandora just with the click of a button. so what are some of the advances we've seen in smart televisions over the past few years? well, one of them is that they make it a lot easier to use. better remotes so it's easier to browse so you don't have to you know
3:05 am
bar and stuff like that. and they made everything a lot faster in the means of loading times, the ability to switch the apps fast and all that fun stuff. and just a few years ago a 1080p was the big format you wanted to have. in televisions today, the hot thing is 4k, right? yes. and the reason why is because they have 4 times as many pixels built into them as old 1080p models, and you get a lot better contrast, clarity, motion, color. and you get a lot more definition in those areas that you couldn't see the fi models. and that's what makes them great. are television stations actually starting to deliver 4k broadcasts? yeah, there are actually a lot of companies coming out with their boxes for home use, and netflix has a lot of 4k content to them, vudu, m-go and fun stuff like that. and additionally on top of that, it's easy to be able to upscale any content that you put into it that's not 4k and try to make it look as close as possible to this right here. so what is the story here behind hdr? what hdr stands for is high dynamic range, and what does for it is give you
3:06 am
and lets it be as bright as it wants to be with the same amount of detail and it's not as dull as it used to be. for example if you're looking at the sun, it actually looks like the sun and it's really bright. and then if you're looking at a shadow behind a rock it actually looks like a shadow behind a rock with exquisite detail in that shadow. and from the sounds of it, this must be the king of the cowboys right here, right? yes, sir. this is the best tv that we have in the store currently. and the reason being is because it's an oled tv. and what oled tv's have that most tv's don't is most tv's are lit with led lights this guy, each pixel can be lit up individually so whenever it wants it can turn off individually, too. so you get the perfect black you get the perfect white, and you can hit every single color in between. yeah, the look is incredible, isn't it? oh, yeah. it's going to be pretty interesting what they try to come up with next. it's going to be pretty hard to beat i'd say. i'd say so. so again you're thinking 65 inches is probably pretty good for what we're doing. oh, yeah. that's definitely what
quote
3:07 am
with a stand so we could just attach that and set it in the opening, but it also comes equipped to be able to hang it on the wall which is going to give us a cleaner look and a little bit more flexibility with positioning. now what we're using is a dual-arm wall mount which has two arms with bendable elbows that are in between a very heavy duty bracket that gets attached to the wall and a bracket that gets attached to the back of the tv. the two arms essentially flex in and out to position it. well, we've installed mounts before on smaller televisions but nothing quite this beefy so we thought it would be good to get some help. we have brandy jorgenson ... hi. and duane mcginnis helping us out today. so the first thing we want to do is hook this up to the television, right? correct. so this mount actually has two pieces. first mount is the actual bracket that attaches to the wall itself and then the second part is the actual bracket
3:08 am
to the tv, we're going to take this big guy that actually anchors to the wall, lock it up onto the back of the tv so we can actually get a height measurement. so you want to get this on the back so you know exactly where this goes in relation to the wall and the bottom of the opening. correct. what we're going to actually do is detach the bracket from the tv itself, get that all measured up so we can predrill to make sure the cabinet a, is secure enoughbut b, that we don't damage the cabinet itself. so to secure that mount to the cabinet what do you plan on using? so the manufacturers on all mounts will supply their own lag bolts that they actually prefe throwing that in there, getting it all secured up. okay, so next step: put the tv on, right? you got it. it's kind of the moment of truth. with this style mount what we're going to ultimately be looking for is in the back of their tv we have 4 little silver pins. we want each one of those to lock in. the tv will drop down. when it's in, it's going to come back up, lock it and that way the tv is secure when you're moving it left and right, up and down and all that fun stuff. this does have a cable management system, right? correct. this style mount does have a cut out along the bottom of the arm
3:09 am
and get it nice and clean behind that tv as well. that looks really nice. looks great with the black cabinets, huh? it's awesome, fits in there perfect. well, thanks so much for helping out, guys. i'll tell you, you really make it look easy. well, thank you. we made it work. all right, well, thanks so much. well, so we have it nice and flush here to the cabinetry. i think it really blends in beautifully. the nice thing about this if we want to work on our cables or do any adjustments or ... this all pulls out about 37 inches so you're able to get back in here very easily. and another thing. let's say of the room and you want to watch television, this thing will turn at just about a 90 degree angle so you can do off axis viewing which is very nice. and then when you're all done, slide it back in again, get everything flushed up very nicely and it really is a great look the way it just kind of floats in the space there. i love it. [upbeat music] need help with your project?
3:12 am
[upbeat music] now a new 4k display is going to take care of our video but what about audio, you ask. well, let's start with our speakers. now i'm sure you're pretty familiar with the typical surround sound set up with the center, a left and a right speaker in the front, then speakers in the back for sound effects. now typically appearance takes sort of a back seat to the performance with speakers but not these. these are made in italy and they have beautiful cabinets made of wood and leather. the shape of the cabinets is a synthesis of a couple of classical instruments that you may have seen: the lute and the lyre. you can see what i'm talking about when you look at the ends of the cabinets with this asymmetrical shape.
3:13 am
with varying wall thicknesses which helps control and reduce inner resonance. they also use wood species of different densities with solid walnut on the top and bottom to provide better resonance spectrum distribution. okay, so a couple other things about the speakers. they do have these stands available so you can actually mount the speakers directly on top of the stands. so depending on the size and layout of your room, it gives you a lot of flex of course, we have cabinets on this side of the room so our speakers will actually go inside the cabinet placement. these are left and right speakers. you can see they have vents on either side. there's this perforated metal here. this is part of their stealth ultra-flex system. it guarantees the speed, articulation and extension of the medium to low frequencies as well as reduces the air flow turbulence. so one thing i should point out is you can
3:14 am
toward the inside of the room like i'm doing here. it just kind of narrows the whole field of the sound. or you could place them both facing out and it just makes the sound a whole lot wider. in home theater, the sub-woofer plays a critical role playing all the bass sounds that are typically pulled from all the other speakers and then pushed through a dedicated sub-woofer channel. now there's a compromise with that. that means all of your bass sound and not from left or right like the producer might have intended. this particular sub-woofer has a remedy for that. not only does it have a dedicated sub channel but it also has a speaker level input to help support the left and right speakers. there are volume controls right on the sub to tune both channels in relation to the other speakers. overall that helps you hear more exactly the producer's intended audio mix. now typically the best location
3:15 am
sound waves running across the diagonal. and of course given our situation with the left and right speaker we're creating some pretty good bass sounds there, so we're able to place sounds where the director would like to see them placed in the movie. and then reserve the very deepest bass sound for the sub-woofer. now to play back the really sophisticated audio in tv and movies today, you need a lot of processing power. and this is the brains of our system. it's an a/v processor that's de inputs like satellite, cable, blu-rays, all your streaming devices and the internet itself and send it to your tv and speakers. this is going to handle any 4k input and relay the proper signals to our 4k display. it's also going to take video in the lower resolutions and upscale those to display the best possible picture on that 4k tv. and it recognizes all types of audio, so you can play back all your existing formats as
3:16 am
set up for both hdr imaging and object-based 3d audio for the most up to date systems. now in terms of our processor, we have tons of inputs. we have 7 hdmi. we have digital audio as well as 7.1 multi-channel audio. 3 component video, and we have 4 composite video. there's also wired and wireless connectivity for internet based services. in terms of outputs, again we have hdmi's, including component and composite video as well as both balanced and unbalanced 11.2 channel surround sound. it's also multi-zone capable. in other words, you can set up for video and audio in one room, video and audio in a second room and then audio only in a third room. that's a lot of processing power. on a system like this, it's always recommended that you have a separate processor and amplifier. that's going to limit signal corruption
3:17 am
with the processor delivers up to 200 watts of power to each of the 5 channels that are typically used in a home theater. and it doesn't require any cooling fans which can sometimes be heard during quieter times in a sound track. okay, now we have everything initially set up here. again the processor takes the signal from either like a dvd or your satellite. it to the amplifier. that sound is amplified, sent out to the speakers and that's where of course you get your sound from. now one thing you have to be concerned about with a very powerful amplifier is it can cause harsh clipping on a speaker, and that can cause quite a bit of damage. but this particular amplifier has what they call powerguard technology and what that does is it monitors the volume going to any particular speaker to make sure it doesn't go beyond its power ratings. okay, with our initial setups
3:18 am
3:20 am
[upbeat music] we talked about carpet for the bedrooms upstairs and the master bedroom-- had those installed a couple shows ago. now we want to talk about the carpet runner going up the stairs. just like the bedrooms, that is also 100% wool. it took a little detour though, before installation. we brought it over to a shop where they do the binding and serging that you need
3:21 am
or in this case, a runner. that's gonna put a nice edge on the material, and there are a couple different ways to go with something like that. now this is annette webber. she's the one helping us with the runner and the rugs for our house. there's a difference between binding and serging. do you want to tell us what that is? binding is a piece of cotton materials, maybe an inch and 1/4 wide, inch 1/2 wide, it wraps around the edge of the carpet, leaves about 1/4 inch on the top. serging is an overcasting or a whipstitch that casts over the edge that wraps the edge. and i'm assuming there's a little bit of prep work before you can get started. oh, yes. we have to cut the carpet to size, and we do that on our cutting floor. usually we have tiles that are 12 inches and everything is square on the floor, so we use those as a tool to keep the carpet square. now once you're done with the cutting, how do you get started with the serging? well, the first step is to pick out a good color of yarn. we have a large variety of colors and we have the wools-- we have a polyester line
3:22 am
and the type of carpet used, we try to match it up with the serging. and tell us a little bit about the actual serging machine. how does that work? well, the serging machine has a top needle that carries the thread down through the carpet, and then there's a looper that carries the yarn up over the edge of the carpet, and then the needle catches it on the top and the bottom, and secures the stitch. so as far as turnaround for our rug, our runner-- how long you think it'll take? well, your rugs and runners probably take us about, maybe 30 minutes to get through thete with it today? yes. well, we got our runner for the stairway. it's all serged. and we're ready to move on this one. what's the process for getting carpet on these beautiful sapele treads? well, first, getting the measurements correct. keep the spacing from the walls uniform. kind of go from there. go slow. installing this stuff-- it's a lot of individual pieces. yeah, the bottom section, it is with the curves.
3:23 am
two individual pieces. and then we'll just work our way up slowly, each one, until we get to the straight shot at the top. once you're past the curve and hit the straightaway, 'bout midway up the steps, then it's just one big roll. yeah, correct. no more curvature anymore, so we just follow the side of the wall. so attaching these pieces to the stairs, is it basically like installing regular carpet? it is. it's basically the same motion over and over again. yeah, we just go a little bit slower to keep the measurements correct. same stapling process. same stapling-- probably the kicker to keep everything tight and stretched. so it's good to have you here. so i could probably pick up the basement steps tomorrow then and we can get those things. one more thing that we want to do here is install some lighting controls. we have a wifi system here that's going to allow us to control and program our lights from our smart phone or tablet. all we have to do is replace the standard devices and faceplates with the wifi ready equipment. now we have switches with dimmers along with electrical boxes.
3:24 am
into a standard one or two gang box. then you just attach the existing cables to the back of each device. the device snaps into the frame, and then we have a faceplate that goes right over the top. now what ties them all together is the whole house lighting controller. that allows you to program different lighting scenes as well as operate your lights using your phone or tablet and your home wifi network. good. how are you? good! good! so we have mike jensen here helping us out with the lights. so now installing these devices is really pretty straightforward, right? yes. we're going to go ahead and get your devices swapped out one for one and then we're going to install mud rings on the wall and we will just hook up with a hot and neutral on our load wires and then click our switches right into that mud ring and snap our wall plate on over that. and these operate just like a regular light switch.
3:25 am
and it's going to control your light fixture from there. now as far as style when you're installing these, there's a couple different ways that you can go. yes. currently we've been showing the adorn style but we also have the decora platform as well for our wifi ready devices. and once you get them all installed, then you have a little bit of programming you need to do. yes, we've gone through and assigned each device in the home a name so we know where that light's being controlled at. then from there we can go ahead and select a device and then brighten it up to whatever light level we desire. specific areas that we want it to be set at. now as far as controlling this, you can do that remotely with either your tablet or your smart phone. yes. we have this both for android and iphone devices and right when you pop into the app you can see all your devices listed right here on the front screen. and from there you can click on a device and control it individually if you'd like. and then the scenes that you have set up, can you give us some examples of what people do? so we have 4 popular scenes that we can set up in most
3:26 am
... cleaning ... dining ... and then all off or good night, we call that. well, this is looking really great. i can't wait to see it, especially at night time when you really can see the lights. yes, that's when it all comes to life. yes... i was tough. do i regret -- i mean, i'm sitting here with you now and we're going to do a great job for the country. we're going to make america great again. th w now. there are so many things -- >> no regrets? >> i can't regret. i wish it were softer. i wish it were nicer. i wish maybe it was more on policy or whatever you want to say. but, but, i will say that -- it really -- it really is something that i'm very proud of. it was a tremendous campaign. >> can we talk about yesterday? president obama? >> sure. >> 90 minutes. scheduled for 15? >> 15 max. >> we talked about foreign
3:34 am
>> this was going to bea quick little chat. it lasted close to an hour and a half. it could have gone on for four hours. it was just, in fact, it was almost hard breaking it up because we had so many things to say. and he told me the good things and the bad things. there are things that are tough right now. >> look what? give us some meat? >> look, i don't want to divulge. we talked about the middle east. tough, tough situation. i wanted to get his fuie i got his full view. i got a good part of his view. i like having that because i am going to be inheriting that in a short period of time. i found him to be terrific. i found him to be very smart. and very nice. great sense of humor. as much as you can have a since of humor talking about tough subjects. we were talking about some pretty tough subjects.
3:35 am
victories also, some things that he feels very gadabout. -- good about. >> like? >> what i wanted to focus on? middle east. north korea. obamacare is tough. health care is a tough situation right now. >> oh, i bet he asked you not to undo it? >> no, he told me the merits. and the difficulties. and we understand that. >> you looked pretty sober sitting there in the oval office? did something wash over you? >> no, i think i am a sober person. i think the press tries to make you into something a little different. in my case, a little bit of a wild man. i'm not. i'm actually not. i'm a very sober person. but it was respect for the office. it was respect for the president. again, i never met him before. but we had -- we had a very good chemistry going. and i really found it, might not be that i agree with him, but i
3:36 am
conversation unbelievably interesting. >> i want to emphasize to you -- mr. president-elect that we now are going to want to do everything we can to help you succeed. because if you succeed, then the country succeeds. >> was it at all awkward? at all? given what you have said about each other, you said he was not born in this country. he said you are unqualified. >> it was a very interesting thing. because a few people have asked me from my fame flee what was that first, period of time like. we never discussed what we said about each other. i said terrible things about him. he said terrible things about me. we never discussed what we said about each other. >> there was no awkwardness? >> i will be honest, from my standpoint zero.
3:37 am
and that's strange. i am actually surprise to tell you that. it's, little bit strange. >> thank you. >> do you think that, that your election its a repudiation of his presidency? >> no. i think it's a -- moment in time where politicians for a long period of time have let people down. they have let them down on the job front. they have even let them down in terms of, the war front. we have been fighting this war for 15 years. >> the message of your campaign? >> spent $6 trillion. we could have rebuilt our country twice. you look at our road and bridges and tunnels and all, and airports, like obsolete. and i think it was just a repudiation of what's been taking place over a longer period of time than that. >> we'll have more of lesley stahl's interview with donald trump in two minutes. the "overnight news" will be
3:38 am
3:39 am

3:40 am
president elect donald trump invited 60 minutes into his inner sanctum, trump towe. it was his first television interview since winning the presidential election. here is more of lesley stahl's interview. >> so let's go through very quickly. some of the promises you made and tell us if you are going to do what you said. way? >> are you really going to build a wall? >> yes. >> they're talking about a fence in the republican congress. >> sure. >> would you accept a fence? >> for certain areas i would. certain areas the wall is more appropriate. i am very good at this. called construction. >> part wall/part fence. >> could be some fencing. >> what about the pledge to deport millions and millions of undocumented is grants? >> what we are going to do is get the people that are criminal and have criminal records, gang members, drug dealers, we have a lot of these people, probably two million.
3:41 am
or going to incarcerate. but we are getting them out of our country. they're here illegally. after the border is secured, and after everything gets normalized we are going to make a determination on -- the people that you are talking about. who are terrific people. they're terrific people. but we are going to make a determination at that. before we make the determination. leslie, it is important. we want to secure or border. >> we had a fantastic productive meeting. >> so you were with paul ryan. you met with the republican leadership. what was the -- one thing that you all agreed you want to get done right away? >> well, i would say there was more than one thing. there were three things. health care. there was immigration.
3:42 am
country. we are going to substantially simplify and lower the taxes. >> you have beth houses. >> i have both houses and the presidency. >> you can do things fast. >> long time since it happened. and they gave me a lot of credit. don't forget. i was abused four, five weeks ago. they said, instead of having all three. going to lose all three. that was good. but, those are the three things that we really discussed. >> you said that -- lobbyists own politicians. >> yeah. >> because they give them money. you admitted you used to do it yourself. >> and when you say, lobbyists and special interests. >> you want to get rid of it? >> i don't like it. >> your own transition team. filled with lobbyists -- verizon, oil and gas, food. >> everybody is a lobbyist down there. >> on your own transition team. >> trying to clean up washington.
3:43 am
they're all people that work -- that's the problem with the system. the system. right now, we are going to clean it up. we are having restrictions on foreign money coming in. we are going to put on term limits. happy about. we are putting on term limits. we are doing a lot of thing to clean up the system. everybody that works for government. they leave government and become a lobbyist essentially. the whole place one big lobbyist. >> you are saying you have to rely on them though yowa get red of them. >> i'm saying they know the system right now. but we are going to phase that out. you have to phase it out. >> talk about your cabinet? have you made any decisions? >> yes. >> tell us. >> i can't tell you that. >> come on. >> you know the amazing things. to show you the incredible nature of our country. first of all, every major leader and probably less than major leader has called me. i have spoke tine many of them. i will call the rest of them. and i said, boy this really shows you how powerful our
3:44 am
france. and uk. and, i mean, everybody. all over asia. and -- very, just to congratulate. really shows the the power of our country. >> one of the things you are going to obviously get an opportunity to dupe is name some one to the supreme court. and i assume you will do that quickly. >> yes, very important. >> during the campaign you said you would appoint justices who were against abortion rights. will you appoint, are you looking to appoint a justice who wants to overturn row v. wade. >> looer happen. i am going to, i am pro-life. the judges will be pro-life. they will be -- >> what about overturning this law? >> couple things. they will be pro-life. in terms of -- the whole gun situation, we know the second amendment. and everybody is talking about the second amendment. trying to dice it up and change it. they will be pro second amendment. but, having to do with abortion, if it ever were overturned, it
3:45 am
so it would go back to the states. >> some women won't be able to get an abortion. >> become to the states. >> some states. >> they will have to go to another state. >> that's okay. >> we'll see what happens. a long way to go. you understand. that has a long, long way to go. >> are you in any way? intimidated, scared, about this enormous burden, the gravity of what you are taking on? >> n >> not at all? >> i respect it. but i am not scared by it. >> you're not scared. but there are people, americans, who are scared. and some of them are demonstrating right now, demonstrating against you. against your rhetoric. >> that's only because they don't know me. i really believe that.
3:46 am
campaign. >> i just don't think they know me. >> what do you think they're demonstrating against? >> in some cases you have professional protesters. and we had it, if you look at wikileaks. >> you thing the people down there are -- professional? >> some of them will be professional. >> what about they're in every city? when they demonstrate against you and there are signs out there, don't you say to yourself, i guess you don't, "do i have to worry about this? do i have to go out and assuage them, tell them not to be afraid, they're afraid." >> i would tell them don't be afraid. absolutely. >> that's not what you are saying. i said it. >> i am saying it. i have been saying it. don't be afraid. we are going to bring our country back. but certainly don't be afraid. we just had an election. and -- sort of like -- you have
3:47 am
people are protesting. if hillary had won, and if my people went out and protested everybody would say that's a terrible thing. and, it would have been a much different attitude. there is a different attitude. a double standard here. >> not my president! >> reporter: it has been five full days since election, and anti-trump demonstrations driven in part by hillary clinton's edge in the popular vote, have been significant. when we interviewed him on friday afternoon, mr. trump said he had not heard about some of the acts of violence that are popping of in his name, or against his supporters. nor he said had he heard of reports of racial slurs and personal threats aga african-americans, latinos, and gays, by some of his supporters. >> i'm very surprised to hear that. >> telling muslims. >> i hate to hear that the i hate to hear that. >> you do hear it? >> i don't hart. i saw, one, two instances. >> on social media? >> very small amount. >> do you want to say anything to those people? >> i would say dent do it. that's terrible. i am going to bring this country
3:48 am
>> they're harassing latinos, muslims. >> i am so saddened to hear that. and i say, stop it. if it -- if it helps. i will say this. i will say it right to the cameras. stop it. >> when the "overnight news" returns, we'll get two views of donald trump's election. one from former house speaker newt gingrich. the other from senator bernie sanders. put some distance between you and temptation with meta appetite control. eals. new, from metamucil, the #1 doctor recommended brand. ahh...still sick, huh? i'll take it from here. i'm good. i just took new mucinex clear and cool. ah! what's this sudden
