story. liberian national is in isolation in newark, new jersey, this morning as doctors wait for ebola results. meantime the cameraman working with nbc in liberia when he contracted the virus is preparing to head home. nbc national correspondent kate snow is at the hospital in omaha, where he was treated. kate, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning to you, matt. ashoka mukpo got a clean bill of health after several tests showing there was no ebola left in his blood stream. later today, he will walk out of this hospital. meanti meantime, as you say, this morning another new scare, this one involving a passenger from liberia. another day, another worry. a sick passenger who landed at newark airport outside new york tuesday sent to a local hospital and isolated. medical workers are evaluating his symptoms out of an abundance of caution. the liberian national had traveled from liberia to brussels before flying in to

newark 1:00 pm tuesday. ashoka mukpo, the nbc freelance cameraman is totally ebola free and no danger when he leaves the hospital today. >> every day walks of life, interacting people at the movie theater, grocery store, he is poses no risk. >> he is not infectious? >> is he not infectious. >> ashoka tweeted, ebola free and feeling so blessed. i fought and won with lots of help. it was, he said, a profound relief. >> it's going to take him a couple three weeks before he feels, hey, i'm back to normal. >> reporter: he tweetd he was still thinking about the two nurses from dallas and looking forward to the day they get the same news. nina pham's condition has improved. no word on amber vinson. texas governor rick perry said the texas that treated thomas eric duncan will no longer handle ebola cases in the state. instead, they're designating two

ebola treatment facilities. >> rival the most advanced units in the world. >> reporter: sales of the protective gear used in hospital sincere through the roof. the most popular full-bodysuits are on a 12-week backlog. and new rules from the department of homeland security kick in today. all passengers traveling from the west african nations dealing with ebola will now have to enter the use through one of five airports that have screening where temperatures and travel history are taken. and today is the first day on the job for the administration's new ebola czar, ron klane. sources say it won't be a showy position, but someone who will work behind the scenes. many, many meetings he has today, including one with the president. matt and hoda? >> kate snow on this story for us. thank you very much. the fbi is going through the online history of three colorado girls after they were stopped in germany. they believe they were on a

journey to join up with islamic militants in syria. nbc correspondent pete williams has latest on that. good morning, pete. >> hoda, good morning. no release of names because these girls are all under 18 and no charges have been filed. they say this is an example of the system working, worried parents sounding the alarm, getting the fbi on the case. the fbi says if the parents of the three girls ages 15, 16 and 17 had not spoken up, the teens probably would not have been stopped, detained over the weekend at an airport in fra frankfurt, germany. they believe they planned to travel on to syria and join up with isis or another group. >> on this particular instance of some young folks who were traveling, we're grateful for germany's cooperation with us. >> reporter: when they didn't come home from school friday evening, the sheriff's office reports he discovered their

passports were missing, too, along with $2,000 in cash. alarmed, he called local authorities, who notified the fbi. that's when officials discovered that the sisters and another girl, the daughter of parents from sudan, who also live in denver, left friday on a flight to chicago, then to frankfurt, and had tickets to fly on to istanbul in turkey. notified by american authorities, german airport police stopped them in frankfurt and sent them home. they told a sheriff's deputy they left for family reasons but refused to elaborate. authorities are checking their e-mails and internet histories to see if others were involved. they're also investigating whether one of the girls struck up a relationship with someone in syria she met online. the prospect that americans would be recruited by the slick propaganda pumped out by isis has been a prime national security worry. >> any time you have even one individual who seeks to join isis, you have the possibility that they will be trained at a

high level, radicalized and then possibly returned to conduct an attack in the united states. >> u.s. officials say they doubt any charges will be filed. prosecuting minors is rare and complicated in the federal system. but authorities say they will keep a close eye on the three girls. matt, hoda? >> all right. pete williams in washington, thanks. last couple of days, this guy here has been talking about a nasty nor'easter taking aim at millions of people up and down the east coast. al, i look out the window and here it is. >> that's right. it is coming down. it is going to continue for at least the next 48 hours as we move up the coast. you can already see that rain spiraling in around that low pressure system. new york city, cloudy, rainy, wet. it's going to continue today. here, we watch this system make its way up the coast. it starts to intensify. you notice those bans. those are bans of pressure. as they get tighter, that means the winds start getting higher. you have strong winds, heavy rain. you're talking winds of 20 to 30

miles per hour. that's going to cause some coastal flooding. and the heavy rain. again, anywhere from two to three inches, especially as you get down east maine. gale warnings, coastal beach flooding. some of this rain up to five inches. and we're keeping our eye on the gulf. there is a 90% chance this thing is going to develop and would become tropical storm hannah. it's already causing big problems for florida. we'll track that in a moment. >> and we'll be back in a few minutes. we've been talking about the defective air bag recall yesterday. federal officials saying even more vehicles sold in the u.s. are involved in that recall over the potentially deadly problem with defective air bags. owners of more than 6 million vehicles are urged to immediately act on recall notices to replace air bags made by takata. the air bag canisters are believed to explode during crashes under certain conditions, sending shrapnel

toward drivers. the defect has been implicated in four deaths and dozens of injuries. for a full list of the vehicles affected, you can go to today.com for more. an american detained in north korea for six months is finally back home this morning. jeffrey phaul arrived just before 7:00 am. he was arrested in north korea back in may, accused of leaving a bible in the bathroom of a nightclub. north korea considers missionary activity a crime. american officials are still trying to secure the release, meanwhile, of two other prisoners, matthew todd miller and kenneth bae. a renewed search for missing malaysian airlines flight 370. the ships are dragging sonar devices with jet fuel sensors to hunt for the wreckage. it vanished with 239 people on board. san francisco gets a giant win in game one of the world

>> i think the league was listening to people and they didn't have all the right voices at the table. >> reporter: as the former head of the new york city d.a.'s sex crime unit, her new charge, deciding when players should be punished, should it be before they had their day in court? >> it won't be upon an allegation or merely upon an arrest but somewhere farther down the process. >> reporter: next month, a new domestic violence and sexual assault policy will be announced, including a formation of a crisis response team with league officials trained as first responders. >> when an incident comes up, they know exactly what to do, make sure we're providing victims with the services they need. >> reporter: and next week, the league will begin giving presentations to players, coaches and team employees on how to identify and prevent future attacks. >> no more boys will be boys. >> reporter: these new psas featuring current and past nfl athletes will begin to air

day. it has been a tough drive on city avenue because of an accident that's still out there, jillian. >> that's right, chris. it's been out there for hours in wynnefield, city avenue blocked in both directions between 54th and 59th streets. check it out. that car just literally looks like it's on its roof and pretty much in half right now. this vehicle lost control. the driver lost control, slammed into a few trees earlier this morning. in the meantime, take woodbine avenue or overbrook avenue to get around it. let's take you to a quick live look at 76. i'll show you delays you're dealing with this morning. really heavy at city avenue, especially westbound. drive time westbound from the vine to the blue route is almost 40 minutes, chris. well, a fast-thinking neighbor helped people escape from a fire that damaged several homes in philadelphia this morning. it broke out around midnight on park avenue in hunting park neighborhood. you can see the flames there. the fire started in an end unit. one neighbor driving by in his car stopped to help rescue people. 18 people were displaced by that fire. we'll be back in half an hour with another local update. i'm chris cato. have a great morning.

charges and now suspensions of the team's coaching staff are being extended. national correspondent craig melvin has more on that. good morning, craig. >> hoda, good morning to you. at a sometimes heated school board meeting here in sayreville last night, board members approved five suspensions for football coaches, including the head coach who has been here roughly two decades. this, as we learn more about what may have happened inside that locker room. late tuesday, sayreville board members approved the suspension for the head coach and other coaches as many in the community passionately defended the coach. >> we are showing our support to coach najar because of his character. >> he is one of the biggest impacts in everybody in this community's lives. >> reporter: one player insists the allegations against his teammates are not true. >> the accusations are all false. to me, it's a lie.

i've been in the locker room and nothing has ever happened. >> reporter: you've never seen anything that's been described? >> no, sir. >> reporter: seven players 15 to 17 are facing criminal charges, including aggravated sexual assault and criminal restraint. according to a report in "the new york daily news" all of those accuse rd minorities, causing further controversy since the majority of the team is white. four freshman players were victimized during a ten-day period in late september. news reports say in one case upper classmen allegedly pinned a freshman player down before sexually assaulting him. "the new york times" interviewed some of the alleged victims and witness with his different accounts of what happened in the locker room. >> of the alleged victims that we spoke to, both of them said that they thought this was just a part of team bonding, a part of camaraderie, but witnesses said what they say was very upsetting to them.

>> reporter: the allegations and media attention, they say, have taken a toll on their client. >> he's a child and not only the magnitude of the charges but just the magnitude of the attention. it's a very daunting, sobering experience for him. >> reporter: the coaches are suspended with pay until the investigation is complete. i'm told by a school board official that that is likely to take at least several more weeks. hoda? >> craig melvin, thanks so much. let's get a check of the weather now from mr. roker. >> you could hear it raining pretty good there. west palm beach, some areas picking up to nine inches of rain. don't drive in this high water. your car is not equipped for it. it causes big problems. it's just a real mess. luckily, it's sandy soil. it drains pretty quickly. we're looking at a repeat of that again today. here is what we're also watching. tropical depression number nine, 120 miles west-southwest of

good morning, everyone. i'm chris cato. 7:56 on your wednesday. let's get your first alert forecast now with meteorologist bill henley. bill, some people seeing rain out there, right? >> yeah, most of the area's seeing wind, but rain has been on and off, and the rain is coming down in center city. that's a live view from the mellon bank building. showers are pushing inland. there are heavier downpours that are starting to take a break in new castle county. and while philadelphia is seeing some light rainfall, steadier rain in the trenton area this morning. it's all keeping our temperatures in the 50s. we're at 57 degrees right now in philadelphia with clouds taking a break at times and showers. we'll see temperatures a little bit warmer this afternoon but not by much. we don't know if the rain played a role, but we have just learned that someone died in that accident on city avenue that we've been following all morning. nbc 10's first alert traffic reporter jillian mele is in now.

jillian, is city avenue still closed at this point? >> it is still blocked off between 59th and 54th streets as a result of that accident. you can take woodbine avenue or overbrook avenue if you need to get around it. we also just got word of an accident on the northeast extension, northbound right as you approach lansdale. we have the right lane blocked in that area. and normal volume on the majors for drivers in chester county. route 30 bypass stacked up on the eastbound side in the normal spots. some employees at philadelphia international airport say not enough is being done to keep them safe from the ebola virus. employees who clean the planes, including the restrooms, they say need more than latex gloves for protection. at 3:00 this afternoon, those workers will gather at terminal "b" and "c" to ask the airport to enforce better health and safety standards. i'm chris cato. we'll have a full update in 25 minutes. you can always get the latest at nbc10.com. now back to the "today" show. have a great wednesday.

providence, rhode island, where, as you can imagine, they are playing a huge family celebration. >> look forward to that. kate snow in omaha for us. thank you, kate. investigating whether three teenage girls from denver were on their way to join isis when detained in vegermany last weekend. 15 and 16-year-old sisters along with another 16-year-old left denver friday and had tickets that would have taken them all the way to turkey. they agreed to fly home voluntarily and no charges have been filed. the sisters' parents called police after they discovered the passports and $2,000 in cash were missing from their home. accusing the agency of pulling agents from their assignment near the white house and sending them to the home of a secret service employee involved in a personal dispute with a neighbor. the report by homeland security says the agents went to the private home in rural maryland on at least two days when president obama was at the white house. it calls the conduct problematic. it comes just as congress is

investigating a string of secret service scandals and security breaches. and an update now on a story we told you about earlier this week. toys r us is now pulling four dolls based on characters from "breaking bad." after a florida mom started a petition, demanding the company stop selling the drugs. the figures came with a fake bag of drugs. now to a miracle escape caught on camera. a little girl lucky to be alive after part of a stadium collapses, missing her by just inches. this happened in donestk, ukraine. you can see her walking toward the stadium. a huge part of the stadium crashes down right in front of her. the stadium has been shelled in

stress disorder wasn't recognized. and, according to leaming, she received no professional counseling. >> if you have ptsd, you are constantly -- and jackie certainly was -- constantly waiting for the next attack. when is it coming? it's a hideous way to live. by the time bobby was killed, jackie was completely numbed, she said she was existing in a trance. >> she found security in a second marriage in 1968 to aristotle onassis. after his passing, she moved to new york. and leaming says this time with the help of a psychiatrist, she started gaining control of her fears and her life. >> somebody asked her, what would you say was your greatest accomplishment? and i think he clearly expected her to say paris or renovating the white house or something like that. and without hesitation, she said, i kept my sanity. >> obviously, the events of that day really destroyed her world. and i don't think that is

retirement. >> right. and we're going to start over here with social security. so, people need a social security strategy. if you take social security as soon as you're able at age 62, you're missing out on $180,000 if you're single, $300,000 if you're a couple. wait until you are 70 years old if you're single. and if you're married wait until the higher earner is 70 years old. >> annuities. people think they're for rich people. what is an annuity. >> you take a sum of money and use it to essentially buy yourself a paycheck. annuity payouts go up as interest rates go down and as you get older. it's a really good idea to take a sum of money as you retire, use it to cover your fixed expenses and annuitize over time. >> let's move over here. >> sure. >> the strategy you want people to remember, withdraw as little

money as you can to keep them intact but also to allow them to keep growing. >> right. in the early years of retirement especially, you want to keep those withdrawals to about three-ish percent. we were relying on this 4% rule that said you could pull out 4% of your money and it would last 30 years. didn't work when the market dropped. you still have to make sure you still have money in stocks as you are through retirement. >> you mention that. you mention the markets. a lot of experts tell you, you get close to retirement age, you start to run away from the stock market to reduce your exposure to risk. you want people to think a little differently. >> right. money that you need to spend in the first five years or the next five years should not be in the market. but beyond that, retirement is still a long term. we're talking about 20 years, 30 years. that means you need exposure to stocks. take 100. subtract your age. that's about the percentage that you want to stock.

>> so take 100 minus 44, 54% of your money should be in stock? >> yes. >> my retirement dream is to be able to stop working early enough to enjoy life, travel and help family. again, i'm sure that's so relatable to a lot of people. jean, what's the advice? >> i hear the word early and i think save more, save more, save more. make sure you are fully funding your 401(k). if you're not working and you have a spouse in the workforce, you can make a full ira contribution. >> tamron, something else? >> one more here from princess. she wants to live it out in the florida keys in her camper, enjoying life, as she put it, on the rock. #get a plan. jean, what's the plan? >> sounds great. whatever you're going to live in, in retirement, i want you to pay it off before you retire. pay off the mortgage on that camper or your house or wherever you are. it will make life in retirement a lot easier.

good morning i'm tracy davidson. an accident is calling problems in delaware county. jillian mele has details. >> this is fhappening at newtow square. we don't have too many details just yet.

we'll have that information for you in a minute. also, to note, an accident here blocking the right lane on the blue route northbound at i-30. clouds where the showers are not coming down, we'll see on and off rainfall throughout the day today. the wind, you see the clouds blowing past center city. those are strong winds that are gusting to more than 20 miles per hour. the rainfall continues especially into the leighhigh valley. a fire started overnight on park avenue and spread down the block. one neighbor driving by stopped to help rescue people from one of the burning houses. more than a dozen people in all are out of their homes. the employees at the

philadelphia international airport say they have not seen enough done to ensure they stay safe from the ebola virus. this morning many employees say they want more than latex gloves. the workers will gather at terminal b and c and ask for better health and safety standards. i'm tracy davidson, we'll have another update in 25 minutes. now back to "the today show."

important topic to hit on. look, injuries impact everyone. i'm sure we could go around this circle right now and talk about an injury that we've had to struggle with in the past. when it happens to you, it is the most important thing in the world. all you want to do is get better. once you get past it, you tend to kind of forget about t as we're talking about today, these injuries are gone. but they shouldn't be forgotten. they can sneak up on you and can come back to you. there are three things i really want people to remember as we go over everything today. one, don't ignore an injury. act on it. when you get that signal of pain from your body, that's impetus to do something about t a small tear can become a big tear. two, see the proper authorities. come up with an action plan. three, don't forget about it. make sure your body stays strong in the future so that injury doesn't come back to you in the future. >> herniated disks. >> we'll talk about low back pain, second most common reason

people visit the doctor. it comes in many different shapes and sizes. we're talking about a herniated disk, otherwise known as a slipped disk, sciatica. what happens here, your lumbar vertebrae, the bones in the lower vertebral spine. this little cushion right here is actually the disk. a herniated disk happens when the outer ring of this disk becomes torn and the disk material can actually slip through, hit on the exiting nerve and cause shooting pain down the leg. that's the classic symptom of a herniated disk. that is low back pain radiates to the buttock. shoots down the leg. >> how do you treat it? it is the worst. >> warning signals, numbness, bowel or bladder problems. management can include a topical or oral anti-inflammatory, pain patches like lydoderm. you go for an epidural.

>> a lot of moms -- it happened to me after picking up my toddler. >> right. good question, natalie. before the age of 40, it's some inciting thing. it can be a heavy sneeze, cough or a twist or lifting or a fall. as one gets older, there can be just degenerative tears of that outer ring and it can happen out of the blue. a lot of people remember a trauma, a lot of people don't. >> i had a rotator cuff. i ignored it. it got worse and worse to the point where the three tendons tore and my biceps detached. >> and then you needed surgery at this point? >> right. >> rotator cuff, very popular word. sort of in the nomenclature. they're a group of tendons that sit with the cuff and with the deltoid are responsible for all the ranges of motion of the shoulder. pain with a certain maneuver.

oh, when i try to attach my bra or brush my hair, it hurts. what actually a rotator cuff injury is actually tearing of the rotator cuff tendons, that's tendonitis. small tears can be managed conservatively, physical therapy. full tear will require surgery otherwise you'll lose complete function of the shoulder. >> and the knee, the acl. >> common injury as well. >> extremely common injury. acl or anterior cruciate ligament is basically stabilizing your knee. a lot of people hear that popping sound when they actually have a tear. >> popping pain. >> and pain, unfortunately. unfortunately. and that is an injury that can come back and haunt you. it can come back as arthritis. you want to make sure you're strengthening that part of your knee. >> great, hi, i'm jay farner, president of quicken loans.
