video in chester, police hope that someone recognizes this van. that you can see roll up on the victim before a passenger opens the side door. this happened yesterday along west third street in chester. the victim died at the hospital. if the you recognize the van or the suspect in the video call chester police. >> also just in to the "nbc 10 news" room the spca is investigating a suspected dog fighting case that leaves six puppies and a dog dead. the spca found the bodies at a home in germantown. two other dogs were rescued. this is the second time the spca executed a search warrant at the home. nbc 10 deanna durante is headed to the neighborhood. she'll have a live report. >> new video from sky force 10 shows barns and other buildings flattened in lancaster county. those are thousands of chickens there and this afternoon we learned a tornado caused the destruction you see. the national weather service

confirms a twister with winds of up to 100 miles per hour touched down in salisbury township right across the chester county line. tim furlong is live in lancaster county. >> what are you seeing this afternoon, tim? >> reporter: i'll tell you what. i'm seeing pretty extensive damage here behind this is as close as we're allowed to get. i got scolded for trying to get closer. what we're also seeing is a lot of people coming together, amish and non-amish working together to rebuild after that tornado tore through this beautiful piece of earth. sky force 10 gives the best view of the damage over 50 properties destroyed by a powerful tornado that stretched over five or six miles, thousands of chickens killed in a barn, homes ripped apart, two amish schools damaged, one completely leveled. >> it's amazing there's no injuries. there was no even minor injuries that i'm aware of. might have been bumps and bruises but nonrequired hospitalization. >> the national weather service took a ride in a chopper to look

at the damage. they saw the barn ripped apart while 200 amish were inside with no way and no devices to monitor the incoming weather condition. a tornado like this is very rare in pennsylvania in february, the national weather service had trouble looking at some of the debris fields including the area near the school because this morning the amish were already rebuilding. >> that can be a challenge when they are cleaning up the damage before we even get to see it. >> the head of the emergency management tells me he believes no lives were lost because folks in town got alerts on tv's and cell phones and went over to tell their amish neighbors who don't use technology. >> they said that neighbors took the time to come over and tell them in minutes prior to the storm hitting which i think in this day and age is something very commendable. >> reporter: back live you can see they are pulling live chickens out. i'm told there's about $8 million in damage but that could go up. it was about a quarter mile wide this tornado.

this is in the western portion of chester county right now. coatesville getting snow now, the visibility not reduced a lot, indication that it is on the light side. not accumulating and melting. and lehigh valley seeing light rain, there may be some light snow up toward the poconos as we go through the evening. this is going to race through over the next few hours and as you can see the temperature still well above the freezing mark even in pottstown at 37, lancaster at 38, 43 in philadelphia. but the wind has been an issue this afternoon. the wind gusting up to 39 miles per hour right now in philadelphia, we have gusts over 40 and most other places gustings over 30. as we go into the evening, these are the wind gusts, still pretty substantial. even to 9:30 tonight. the temperature still above freezing in philadelphia and even the middle of the night we still have wind. so this wind is going to be with us all night and all day

tomorrow with even colder air coming in. tell you about those temperatures and then how much it's going to warm up over the weekend with the seven-day in a few minutes. >> philadelphia's district attorney says there's no time table other than justice when it comes to the lasean mccoy case. nbc 10 spoke with seth williams today. his meeting with mccoy and his attorney earlier this week to discuss the case is a common practice ahead of filing charges. mccoy is accused of assaulting two off-duty philadelphia police officers february 7 but he reportedly told the d.a. and investigators tuesday that the incident was not his fault. williams says he's committed to taking his time to get it right. >> they are impatient or want to bully my office into doing something we're not going to do that. do what we think is right, make the decision when we have enough evidence zbrxt williams says his office is in touch with mccoy's attorney and they know where

insight into the impact of primaries. the discussion part of the centers headed to the white house exhibit. the republican governor of nevada says he's not interested at this time in being considered to replace justice scalia on the u.s. supreme court. sandoval is a former district court judge and state attorney general. he says the consideration is beyond humbling. republicans controlling the senate say they won't schedule a vote or even hold hearings on whomever president obama may name. but the president vowed again today to select scalia's successor before a new president is sworn in. antonin scalia passed away filling the vacancy is considered crucial, whomever replaces scalia, republican or democrat, could change the balance of the court. >> a judge in westchester declared a mistrial last night for a man accused in the death of his father. edward o'brien iii is accused of withholding medical fair from his father resulting in his

death. his father was covered in bed sores and feces when he was found. jurors deliberated but could not reach a verdict. >> a lot of us do this, leave your car unattended and running to warm up. police warn that this habit creates a crime of opportunity for thieves. officers here in the 22nd district say these are some of the 41 vehicles that were reported stolen since january. and look at one of the crimes in action. a business owner left his van running outside and that's when two men looking to take shelter from the cold drove off. officers say they will crack down on this preventible crime. >> auto sales shop owner is behind bars this afternoon after police say he sold cars to customers without giving them the car's titles. tony miller sold cars, he bought the cars using loans but never paid the loans off so the company kept the car titles. customers were then unable to register their vehicles and

there was no record of the sale. anyone having titling issues who bought a car from miller is asked to contact winslow township police. >> police arrested one man and looking for another after two burglaries happened around christmas time. dustin hults was charged. electronics and tools found stolen from the homes. donald schiavello is still on the loose, he is wanted on dlaer and theft. >> two are suing the president of the allentown teachers union because they say she's being paid to teach even though she is not teaching. they claim that debra treader hasn't taught in a classroom in seven years. the lawsuit contends that she earn as full time salary and benefits though she works on union issues and does not teach. treader has declined to comment. >> police say a ukrainian national posed as a pennsylvania high school honor student after his visa expired.

in research and clinical applications for tumors, some patients with lung cancer. prostate cancer, that is not been as successful yet. >> why not? >> we don't know. it's one of the areas where more research is needed. >> he calls it an opportunity for researchers to figure it out. lauren mayk, "nbc 10 news." >> now to the spread of the zika virus. three pregnant women in florida have tested positive for zika, all three believed to be travel-related but officials won't say which countries the women traveled to. scientists are studying the virus's possible connection to babies born with unusual small heads. >> a u.s. coast guard boat capsized in new york city responding to a call for help from a fishing boat. take a look here. five members of the coast guard were on board at the time. all eventually made it to shore safely. the crew on the fishing boat initially called the coast guard when the boat started taking on water. all seven in that boat also made

it safely to dry land. philadelphia district attorney seth williams shared a message to school students. williams spent the morning at andrew jackson elementary in south philadelphia to encourage students to take a stand against bullying and stay in school. he says he believes reaching kids at an early age can have a life long effect. >> we come and talk about bullying because really it's a vehicle to talk about crime prevention, and a way to begin a discussion with kids in elementary school or middle school about crime and how to stop it and how to be safe. >> he has visited more than third schools to bring awareness to the bullying and crime prevention. >> back to the video showing chickens caught in the path of a tornado in lancaster county. the national weather service this afternoon confirms it was a twister that caused what you see here. nbc 10's denise nakano with a close look at that. of >> no one was hurt in the tornado that hit salisbury township but you see the

destruction as a rescue task force tried to save chickens trapped under this chicken house. sky force 10 gets a bird's-eye view of the work to remove tens of thousands of chickens from two collapsed chicken houses. amish and others sifted through the debris of scraps and wood, they passed live chickens down the line into the bed of a truck. a wider view of the destruction in salisbury township shows the building blown down looking more like match sticks. it's not clear how many of the 16,000 kickens can be saved or how many are trapped under debris. >> and the farmers are trying to add up the damage but overall the town of white horse, salisbury township is looking at $8 million in damage. >> what's amazing is the wind speed, the speed of the storms yesterday. glenn, have you seen anything like that before? i know you've seen a lot. >> not in this part of the

country, outside of a hurricane, to see storms moving at 75 to 80 miles an hour. and a little bit amazed there weren't more tornados and even more damage than what we saw. that was an incredibly powerful system that came through last night. then it caused flooding as everything slowed down. we have light rain and snow moving through the area now. pales in comparison to yesterday. colder winds moving in tonight and into tomorrow. but we've got some weekend warming on the way. temperature is 43 degrees. been cloudy about all day. look at that, 31 gusting to 39 miles an hour. feels like 32. it's 21 degrees colder than it was at this time yesterday. now, some of these folks are happy about that in blue mountain. they got messed up yesterday. heavy rain and they had warm weather. and they are going to get a chance to make snow over the next few days until more warm

weather starts coming in. it's not so warm now. 33 in mount pocono. it's 43 in philadelphia. 37 in pottstown. 39 in reading. so even in the areas of seeing the snow the temperature is well above the freezing mark and just melting. it is windy everywhere, that's for sure. gusts of 36 miles an hour in atlantic city, 38 in northeast philly and the wind isn't going to die down a lot tonight as we showed you earlier. we have light rain and snow moving in from the west. this is with an arctic front. we have cold air coming in behind it. we're going to see some snow here. this is western chester county, it's not progressing eastward because it's elevation-related. the higher up you are, the better chance there is of it snowing rather than raining in a situation like this. so, it's going to about coatesville but hasn't made to the westchester even though everything is moving west to east. because westchester is at a lower elevation than the western portion of the county.

there is more back to the west. it's going to be moving through pretty rapidly. now speaking of moving through rapidly these are the storms that developed last night. and as we look back on the radar in lancaster county, there's coatesville and chester county, there's that notch in the radar indicating where the tornado was. ef-2, 125-mile-an-hour winds, about 5 miles long. extremely rare for any tornado in february, let alone an ef-2. that was really freaky situation here. as we go through the night tonight, the temperature drops into the 20s, it's still windy so it's going to feel pretty cold when you get up in the morning, it's still going to be windy. we're not getting out of that four little while. we got early light rain and snow, then turning windy and colder, by morning 30 at philadelphia, 26 north and west. and then during the day tomorrow a windy cold day.

temperature is going to go back up with the seven-day in a few minutes. >> all new at 4:00, late this afternoon we learned what caused the u.s. air flight to crash at philadelphia international airport. this is passenger video taken march 13, 2014, when this crash happened. the ntsb report now details the actions that the captain and his crew, the nbc 10 investigators were first to tell you about what happened inside that cockpit and also on the ground. >> harry hairston broke this story, he joins us with the official findings. >> first off let me say this is the faa report, we first showed you nearly two years ago. the ntsb report released a short time ago, it supports this. the ntsb report details the moments before take-off, describing what appeared to be some confusion in the cockpit. as we first told you the captain initiated takeoff, realized it was necessary to reject after becoming airborne. the ntsb report says the captain stated he had only done a

the hill it's snowing, the bottom of the valley it's raining. that's what's happening in chester county right now. still snowing in coatesville and a little more in the higher elevations. not really going to accumulate, this is going to race through and that will be it for the night. as we go through the night, the temperature continues to go down. the wind stays up, so remember, we've got temperatures in the 20s here, it's still going to be windy so may be feeling like the teens by day break. in areas north and west. during the afternoon it may not even get to 40 degrees, and it's still windy all day. okay. that's a cold day. then tomorrow night it's cold too. down into the 20s. but then the warm-up begins. and by sunday you're not going to be cold. early light rain and snow, windy, then turning colder, 30 by morning in philadelphia, 26 north and west. during the day tomorrow a lot of
