several years ago. guests at a hotel woke up to smokeñfilling their rooms this morning. the grape leaves diner caught fire and sent the smoke into the hotel around 3:00. no one was hurt, everyone evacuated and they went back a short time later. house in south philly, philadelphia police saying someone threw an object soaked in gasoline at this house at the corner of wolf and beechwood. it hit a window and bounced off. police found a second molotov cocktail on the sidewalk. neighbors saw it happen but no one's been arrested. >> police in chester county released a new photo of the mask worn by a robbery suspect when he broke into a woman's home and tied her up at the foot of her bed. this robbery took place early sunday morning. police are for the man you see here in this video on the right. he made off with jewelry, a car, and an atm card.

philadelphia. workers are celebrating a win for a great cause today. the medford store raised more than $25,000 during shoprite's partners contest. that's mor money to fight hunger and that means three workers here are going to be featured on the back of a limited edition boxch cheerios. well, today looked and felt a lot like yesterday, one exception in the poconos, actually seeing some sunshine. that's in the french manor now. it's been damp and chilly again today. we have warmer weather coming in tomorrow, as soon as we see a little bit of sunshine and get out of that east wind, the temperature will jump. but it's still not too late for tiouqz have some in the seven-dy before the weekend is over. we have cloudy skies around the area now. but at least we can see the tops

of the buildings unlike yesterday. 51 degrees, cloudy skies. the wind north-northwest at 8. so we are getting away from that easterly wind. that will allow the temperature to go up. so, 51 degrees today but into the 60s tomorrow. then back down. look at those temperatures. as we head toward the weekend and then sunday should be even colder than saturday. so, yeah, the winter coats may be needed by the end of the week. and over the weekend. not so much in the next two days. it's warmest at the poconos which again is unusual. 55 degrees in dover. 48 in pottstown. is the cold spot, 49 degrees in mount holly. look how close we are to some really warm air. 72 in cincinnati. 86 in nashville. so just a little west wind and the temperature shoots up there. so we're going to get warmer, but we're not going to quite get

into this extreme record warmth like we did last week. a little bit of a change in the pattern. the area of rain continues to shrink. and that means less and less of us getting wet as we go through the evening rush and drier air coming in from the west. that's only temporary. because there's another small system coming in, we're not talking about big storms here as we go through the rest of the week. kind of nuisance type things. through the night tonight it's pretty mild. temperatures in the 40s. at this time of the year, at night is pretty mild. then by tomorrow with a little bit of sunshine we're not talking about a bright sunny day but temperatures still go well in the 60s. we get enough sunshine, could get into the upper 60s. then here comes showers tomorrow afternoon and into the earning hours. it's not going to be a steady type of a rain. and then we start looking toward the weekend and this is the

latest european model. most accurate in the world overall. and by sunday evening it has a storm developing along the qpáu coast t nor'easter, and starting off as rain, during the daylight hours. on sunday. and then here's the white turning into some snow or mixture. as the colder air starts to come in. some of the other models also show some sort of a storm that would perhaps lead to a mixture of rain and snow. it's not that unusual to get it this time of year. but after we got a couple of days of 80-plus, maybe a little bit unusual. mostly cloudy and mild for march, overnight tonight, 46 degrees for the low in philadelphia. 42 north and west. during the day tomorrow, we get a little bit of sunshine, again that pushes the temperatures into the 60s. mid-60s on average and late day showers. late in the afternoon and into

new at 4:30, philadelphia's bed bug epidemic, the nbc 10 investigators reveal the true cost, records show philadelphia is one of the most infested cities in the country. >> and now we learned how

expensive it is to try to stay ahead of that problem. even in their own buildings. we sent george spencer from the investigators to find out. >> reporter: from the streets of crowded row homes to the skyscrapers of center city and at city hall itself, offices like joyce's. >> they found in a cushion, on a stool that i never used like what they said was a sign that a bed bug had been there. >> reporter: bed bugs are a philadelphia problem that all city residents are paying for, whether they found the pests in their own homes or not. >> you've got areas where they can go and hide. >> reporter: bob has been exterminating the bugs since the early 1990s. >> they are hitchhikers. they take a ride on anything they can attach themselves to. >> reporter: the nbc 10 investigators found the bugs hitchhiked into city buildings at least 29 times between august and december last year, each

time demanding taxpayer funded cleanups. confirmed bed bug activity in and around the 311 call center a total of $6,500 to treat. more activity in the city hall records room, $7,000 to treat. in police headquarters, at this streets department property near the airport, and the nurse's station at the city's river view home just before christmas. >> there has been seems an increase in the last two or three years. >> reporter: tom manages 139 city-owned buildings. his toughest properties are the busy buildings near city hall, especially the 16-story municipal services building. we got records showing confirmed bed bug activity there in late september, and three times in early october. that's when the city shelled out more than $78,000 in, quote, preventive maintenance. but just 18 days later, employees discovered each more confirmed activity, still more

the day after that, and once again in early december. >> can you stay ahead of a problem like this or is this kind of costly maintenance that doesn't end up stopping anything? >> no, i think you can stay ahead. >> reporter: dave believes education is key to protecting buildings visited by thousands every day. because any one of those could potentially carry in bed bugs on clothes or in bags. >> the introductiontion comes in could come in daily. on the way to work. >> you could have this building done in the beginning of october and by mid october there could be new bed bugs here. >> there could be. yes. >> reporter: the crew who spend the days vacuuming and freezing out the pests say they can end up in chairs, carpets, even cubicle dividers. so far we're told the city's confirmed sightings have been one or two, not full on infestations but these crews say bed bugs may still be in city

properties even now, meaning taxpayers extermination bills will keep coming. >> you need stay on top of it. it can get off, it gets up and running it can really just roll like you would not believe. >> george spencer, "nbc 10 news." the investigators tells us grand total of philadelphia taxpayer dollars battling between august and december of last year, more than $113,000. last week the city sent out a letter reminding employees what to do if they encounter a bed bug. breaking news now out of washington, d.c., d.c.'s metro subway system will shut down entirely for at least 29 hours, it's to inspect electrical components, this will happen at midnight and remains closed until at least 5 tomorrow morning, the fire on the tracks led to major delays there throughout the system on monday, and that fire was caused by the same kind of electrical component and malfunction last

sunshine like at mount pocono up to 56 degrees. gives you an idea of how warm it would be in the low elevations if we had sunshine. now we're going to be jumping up in the next couple of days, 62 degrees by thursday. look what happens as we head into the weekend. and by sunday it's going to be cold enough to have a combination of rain and snow in the forecast. right now it's just rain, some very light rain, patchy light rain and drizzle out there. and some clearing starting to take place around washington, d.c. area, and eastern maryland. some of that starting to come in during the night tonight. whatever rain is out there now is going to be moving out. and we're going to be seeing improving conditions. talk more about that chance of snow and the cooldown that is coming over the weekend with the 7-day in a few minutes. >> some delaware high school students are getting recognition and a lot of personal satisfaction from their latest

if you are thinking about quitting smoking, research suggests cold turkey is the best method. a british study assigned smokers to quit abruptly or gradually. patients in the cold turkey group were 25% more likely to quit in the short-term and still be smoke free six months later. hospitals may be cracking down on hand washing but they are missing a big source of how super bugs spread. the culprit, patients. researchers found close to a quarter of the patients had some sort of drug resistant germ on their hands.

with the drizzle and the clouds and the fog and the wind. we've got wednesday warm-up, a little sunshine to go a long way this time of year. and we also have the possibility of some snow by sunday, especially sunday night. the commute this afternoon a little better than yesterday. visibility is a little better and the drizzle is pretty much moved out. 51 degrees now and the wind is shifting more into the northwest. that's the reason that the visibility is better and the rain is ending. and we've had a little bit of sunshine in the poconos that put the temperature higher there than any part of the area. 55 in mount pocono, as low as 46 in westchester where we've seen the clouds in all day. 55 degrees in dover, delaware. the temperature change, the last 24 hour, the poconos, 18 degrees warmer but some places only a

couple of degrees warmer. so, the atmosphere overall is much, much warmer all you need is the sunshine. to make a huge difference. 51 today, up to 64 tomorrow with a little bit of sunshine, then 62 thursday. before we see the temperatures plunge as we head toward the weekend. there's the latest, sprinkles and clearing behind it. then we wait for the next systems to move in. one after another because they are weak, they can do this. you can see here is the one coming in tomorrow, showers late tomorrow. then much of thursday is dry. but we get another disturbance with some possible showers on thursday. then another one that's going to come down on friday. than one is a little more significant, a legitimate storm. this would be a potential nor'easter, developing near the north carolina coast on sunday. perhaps starting off as rain
