day. we want to get to steve patterson, in mississippi this morning, where one of the two tornadoes touched down. steve, good morning. >> good morning, willie and savannah. welcome to columbus, mississippi. this is the epicenter where one of the tornadoes touched down. power lines strewn everywhere. trees toppled over, revealing roots taller than i am. despite all the damage here, this is part of a larger system causing devastation now for days. >> reporter: multiple tornadoes touched down in mississippi thursday. >> not coming this way. >> reporter: sending many running for cover. >> when we come running out of the shop, there was some tin flying off the top of the shop there. nothing i've ever seen or been in. >> reporter: overnight, blinding rain battered residents in alabama. high winds toppling the roof of this gas station. in oklahoma, a community worked together to clean up the damage after a twister caused widespread destruction in the

tulsa area. >> telephone poles can fall. let's stay out of the way. >> reporter: a heavy hailstorm reeking havoc in arkansas. toys were tossed in this mobile home park in kentucky. the roof torn off in this gymnasium while students and staff were huddled inside. >> we decided not to load busses. everything happened very, very quickly. >> reporter: back in mississippi, first responders worked overnight to clear debris-scattered roads of trees and power lines. >> despite all the damage, no major injuries reported. here in columbus, little in the way of damage even to homes. people here waking up pretty thankful this morning. >> steve patterson, thank you. >> that storm threat stretches all the way up to the northeast today. dylan is in for al. what are we looking at? >> we'll see more storms in the southeast. each day gets a little better. we won't see a big outbreak

today. more flooding rain will be an issue today. we have flooding warnings south of atlanta. the storms will weaken as they move eastward. we are still looking at the damage from yesterday. a lot of wind damage reports and four reported tornadoes. nothing causing too much damage on thursday. today, our threat stretches from virginia all the way back to new orleans. again, large hail, damaging wind gusts and isolated tornado is possible. it's really the risk of flooding rains. this cold front is going to sag to the southeast and not move eastward all that quickly. as the lines of showers and storms develop, we will see the potential of possibly flash flooding through southern georgia and northern florida. we could see as much as a widespread 3 inches of rain. some areas could end up with 6 to 8 inches of rain. that could lead to flooding. >> dylan, keep us posted on that. we move now to the presidential race and the battle for wisconsin. new polls have the front runners trailing. nbc national correspondent peter alexander is following the

latest. peter, good morning. >> good morning. four days till wisconsin and donald trump is looking make up ground this weekend in the badger state. he leads the delegate race. his campaign has been consumed by controversies, exposing real vulnerabilities for the billionaire. >> reporter: off the trail and behind closed doors, donald trump trying to regain his footing. huddling with foreign policy advisers in person for the first time. then with the rnc and its chairman, discussing convention rules and delegates. >> they're very good people. actually, terrific meeting, i think. it's really a unity meeting. >> reporter: the party remains divided, setting up a showdown in wisconsin next tuesday. perhaps the stop trump movement's best opportunity to do just that. with ted cruz building a double digit lead. >> there's no doubt that donald trump is the kim kardashian presidential candidate. he sits on twitter and makes a lot of noise, but he has no solutions to fixing the problems. >> reporter: for trump, the

defeat would be stinging, his biggest setback since iowa. under fire on right ring radio for clumsy comments on abortion this week. >> the ammunition that gave democrats, i can't tell you how it's rejuvenated them. >> reporter: trump's backers offering support. >> you know what? i want to protect my family. >> reporter: kasich's allies taking a cue from trump. >> if ted cruz's mouth is moving, he's lying. >> reporter: kasich himself taking on the front runner. >> as commander in chief and leader of the free world, you don't get do-overs. you need to be able to get it right the first time. >> reporter: just as the billionaire showing weakness in wisconsin, so is the former secretary of state, trailing bernie sanders there by four points. hillary clinton's aides bracing for a possible loss. clinton losing her cool after a shouted question from an

environmentalist. >> will you act on your word? >> i am so sick of the sanders campaign lying about things. sick of it. >> reporter: earlier, brushing off both rivals. >> i have one million more votes than donald trump, and i have 2.5 million more votes than bernie sanders. >> still, sanders has the energy and the financial fuel to extend this race as long as he likes. after raising more than $43 million in february, the sanders campaign announced yesterday it beat the total in march. the money keeps pouring in. 97% of the cash they've raised has come from donations online. savannah and willie? >> peter, thank you. chuck todd is nbc's political director and moderator of "meet the press." good to see you. >> morning. >> take us inside the room in washington, in a week where donald trump said he wouldn't support the nominee necessarily, and a week he had to defend his campaign manager against battery charges, the comments to chris

matthews about abortion. what was it like in the room? >> also, in a week he was going to do the loyalty pledge. >> we only have so much time. >> i know. it's been one of those weeks for trump. it was a meeting scheduled last week. the timing, of course, because of everything that's happened this week, gave it, i think, added value and added interest to a lot of people. it was about the trump campaign trying to get a better handle on the rules. remember, they're just learning. i think what happened last week in louisiana, this is a state that he won and it turned out ted cruz, after the fact, at the state convention, ends up with more delegates out of louisiana than trump. it was a wakeup call to the trump campaign. they have a lot to learn about the rules, and they need to stop trashing the rnc and start learning and working with them if they want to have a shot at winning this nomination and uniting this party. >> let's talk about wisconsin. new poll out showing trump

trailing badly, double digits. is this potentially a sign of trump coming back to earth, or is that establishment fantasy? >> we'll see. i hesitate to say this might be the week that you finally see the establishment striking back. there's a couple things different about wisconsin that make you think, these polls are real and trump is in trouble. number one, it's a conservative movement that's successful in wisconsin. they're not as divided, not as unhappy. scott walker has been a two-term governor. they have the speaker of the house in paul ryan. chairman of the rnc is a wisconsin guy. they're not fans of trump. the other factor, civility. wisconsin, very similar to its neighboring states of iowa and minnesota, they expect a certain decorum when you conduct yourself. trump doesn't fit it very well. guess what? he lost iowa. he lost minnesota. i wouldn't be shocked if, because ofsivi civility, he los

wisconsin. >> hop over to the democrats. bernie sanders within a small lead or tied with hillary clinton there. looking ahead to new york down the road. that's probably tighter than clinton would like it to be right now. what is the level of concern, despite her advantage in delega delegates, about this race? >> you can judge her concern by her schedule. three days ago, he wshe was goio spend her time in new york. she and bill clinton added events saturday in wisconsin. they're afraid of getting blown out. they know they might lose, but they want to lose like michigan. they don't want another new hampshire situation. there is an outside possibility of that. wisconsin's electorate fits bernie sanders. madison, the heart of the progressive movement in the midwest. he could do very well. a big win for him there, and he boom ee

boomerangs and may get new york. clinton wants to make sure they don't get clobbered in wisconsin. >> you'll be chewing on this on sunday on "meet the press." we'll be watching. >> thank you. a state trooper shot at a bus station in richmond died from his injuries. the gunman was killed by other officers and the investigation is underway. justice correspondent pete williams is following this story. good morning. >> authorities are saying this was not an act of terrorism, but it was a sudden outbreak of violence in richmond, the capital city of virginia. the city councilwoman called it one of the saddest days she's ever seen there. >> reporter: a burst of gunfire ran rang out mid afternoon in the bus station in downtown richmond. >> mass casualty. >> reporter: travelers ducked for cover or turned and ran. >> i heard two gunshots go off. i didn't think they were

gunshots. then there were five or ten more after that. i could see the muzzle flash through the tinted door, so i ran out of there. >> reporter: law enforcement officials say state police were conducting a countcounter-drug training mission, including talking to people. chad dermyer, age 37, approached a man to ask routine questions. >> the subject pulled out a handgun and shot chad multiple times. the male subject continued firing his weapon, as two other state police troopers returned fire. >> reporter: the gunman ran but was shot and killed. >> the shooter is down. area is secure. >> reporter: the wounded trooper was rushed to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead. two women inside the terminal were wounded by gunfire, though not seriously, and hospitalized for treatment. police are not revealing the gunman's name. they say he had a criminal record and was not from virginia. some officials say he had mental problems. >> greyhound says the richmond

station will be closed today and service in and out of the city has been cancelled. trooper dermyer leaves behind a wife and two young children. >> so sad. thank you very much. back to the video we showed at the top of the show. a whale watching ship slamming into a dock. joe fryer has details on this one. >> good morning. the coast guard is investigating what happened. an apparent malfunction, as the cruise ship smashed into the pier, jolting everyone on board and scaring those who watched it unfold. >> reporter: the largest whale watching ship on the west coast, the adventure horn blower, approaching the pier, horn sounds frantically not slowing down. people on the pier run for cover. the elderly lady just makes it to safety. 150 feet of steel meets brick. seven passengers injured. none of those injuries life threatening. some of the injured holding ice bags. a few needing skretretchers to

off the ship. a man from wisconsin was on the walkway. >> it came fast. she skirted the side, hit the side. yelled something, i heard something. we were coming in fast and hard. >> reporter: passengers said the crew were yelling, "brace yourselves," or "hold on to something!" the horn blower combines sightseeing and whale watching. the 144 people on board saw more than they bargained for. one passenger said it was exciting, definitely something new. the ship's throttle apparently was stuck in the forward position. there will be another cruise today, but on a different ship. >> of the seven people injured, only three went to the hospital. all the injuries are considered minor, bumps and bruises. no doubt this morning, some passengers are waking up with some aches and pains. willie? >> glad the injuries weren't more serious. how would you like to be walking down a pier and seeing the ship

court, asking the court to allow him to release records from the d.c. madame else sort sscort se names tied up in the civil order. without offering specifics, sibley stirred up speculation with this cliff hanger. >> the records contain information relevant to the 2016 presidential election. >> reporter: in this online video posted last month, sibley asks for donations for his mounting legal fees, after lower courts denied his request. >> i must continue this fight. >> reporter: this started in 2007 when the d.c. madame scandal broke, rocking the nation's capital, even bringing down louisiana senator david vitter, linked to the prostitution ring. >> i want to, again, offer my deal, sincere apologies to all those i let down and disappointed with these actions from my past. i am completely responsible, and i'm so very, very sorry.

my face? how do i do that? >> reporter: california state assemblyman, mark levinlevine, hoping to end moments like that. proposing a bill to have health standards for models, including check-ups and health counseling. model agencies would have to be commissioned by the labor commission. >> we're trying to protect women in the fashion industry. up to 40% of fashion models have eating disorders. as many as 50% of girls in 5th to 12th grade think they're not thin enough because of the images they see in magazines. >> reporter: sarah, founder of the advocacy group, model alliance, began her career at age 14. she says more protection is needed, especially for younger models in an industry she calls largely unregulated. >> i'd like to see basic workplace health and safety standards in the fashion industry across the board.

when you look at actors and actresses, they have union protection. they have labor laws that protect them. models don't have anything like that. >> reporter: the california measure is similar to recent legislation in israel, france, spain and italy, which require a doctor's okay to work. designed to keep models at a healthier weight. the difference is felt. >> it's liberating. it is a phycology in society, if you look too thin, you won't book work. >> reporter: a mindset mark levine is hoping will make its way back to the u.s. >> i have a 7-year-old daughter. i know these images impact them. there is a societal benefit for resetting expectations of what women are supposed to look like. >> if signed into law, the bill would go into effect in january. the talent agent industry opposes -- i want to make sure i get the legal wording correct --

looks like them. for them to see women having fun together, making music together and making money together, too. so it creates this great sense of rcamaraderie. we have two girl groups. little mix, which i put together, and fifth harmony. both groups -- >> you think about that, do you miss destiny's child? >> i miss -- i don't miss the fact that -- i miss everything. i miss everything. the truth is, i don't in a sense, because we see each other all the time. >> yeah. >> so i miss, of course, us being on stage. i don't miss the ladies in that way. i see them all the time, you know what i mean? >> still family. >> we are. those are my sisters. i call them with great news, bad news, okay news. i love them to death. they're my gems. the gems of my life. >> you've had such a successful solo career post destiny's child. that doesn't always happen for

then the phone calls started. you know, people tried to get us together, so we could figure out how to do it. yeah, short ten years later, they were able to actually have a film come out. >> you know, i told you before we started the interview, you've given a gift to the world with this film. musicians, if you love movies. when you're playing someone like miles davis who has such an imprint in our mind, both his exterior and what we think we know about his interior, how do you channel through that, so you're not playing miles, you are miles? >> you know, i tried to really tell a story and create a narrative with the team. steven co-wrote the film with me. it felt like a miles experience, as opposed to trying to check all the boxes off his life. i just wanted to have a film that was experiential and felt innovative and was exciting and,

you know, kind of gangster. felt like what miles' music and the experience i have with miles is for me. >> you zeroed in on a time period. you didn't try to cover miles davis' entire journey. you said, this short period of time, with his first wife, that's important. why did you focus in on that? >> well, it's sort of framed and a bifurcated telling. there was a present time, and then there were these flashbacks that we always refer to. he is in a moment in his creativity where he's not playing. he's sort of stuck. that, for me, when you go through the research and you go, this prolific artist for all these years, so impactful, and now he goes silent for five years. what's going on there? why did that happen? how does he get out of it? does he get out of it? what does he say when he does get out of it? those were the questions that were the jumping off point for me. i thought, this is a good place to start the story. >> your directorial debut. emma, you're now co-starring

with your director. what is that dynamic like? >> it was exciting. it was different for me. that was a first, you know. i really felt protected, you know. when someone like don cheadle, who already knows what he's doing as an actor, and as a director, he brought the same skill. i felt protector in that sense. he was very present and very giving. it was my first experience, so it was a good one, thankfully. >> your wife has said you can never do this again. directing, starring. >> yeah. >> she put down the hammer. >> yeah. it was a lot. it was a lot to do. something i tried to give away about five years ago, you know. had it all gone away, i probably would have been relieved. a part of me would have been disappointed. just the task ahead of me was so daunting, i was like, i have to try to slough one of these gigs. ultimately, it was the only way we were going to get it done, is if i just, you know, strapped it on my back and did it all. that's what i did. i survived.
