breaking news at 11:00, an officer shot on the streets in west philadelphia tonight. >> a dangerous city and a lot of guns out there. >> the 24-year-old officer tackled the suspect and then was shot. we're live on the scene. >> the officer, a two-year veteran of the force is expected to be okay and police say two suspects are in custody. the shooting happened just before 9:00 tonight. a few blocks from 60th and spruce where an officer was shot at point blank range inside his car back in january.

we're bringing you live coverage. we're live at the hospital where the officer is being treated t this hour. but we begin with drew smith and break down what we know right now. >> reporter: well, denise, right now this is a very large crime scene. i'm going to show you where investigators have been focusing their attention right near the 60th and market station which remains closed. from what we know, what investigators just briefed us in the past hour, it was shortly before 9:00 when this started. an officer and his partner were on routine patrol. a woman had flagged them down and the police commissioner says two men were trying to steal from that woman. they were breaking into her car. one of them had a gun and when the officer went to tackle him he shot first. that's according to police and it hit the officer in the leg. the officer returned fire and that man got up and started running. he shot three times.

it's unclear where those bullets ended up. a large police response followed and his partner rushed him off to the hospital. they did make two arrests. we have spoke to a witness who watched all of this happen. listen. >> somebody else was getting mugged over here by the l entrance and that's where all the cops were at at first and everything started happening all crazy. the guy that ran, he started shooting first, turned around and was shooting at the cop and the cop retaliated across the lot. >> reporter: that was a large search that went on and even after they made those arrests the helicopter continued to circle over this area just to be safe and police remain here. they've got market street shut down. there are surveillance cameras up and down market street. we know they were reviewing that footage. there are also businesses that

have cameras. those will play a role in this investigation. we now continue our team coverage with nbc 10 andrea where the officer is getting treated right now. >> reporter: well, the officer is in stable condition with a gunshot wound to his left thigh. he actually applied his own tourniquet to stop the bleeding. the officer is 24 years old. he's only been with the police department for two years and served in the 18th district. within minutes of arriving at the hospital there was a large police presence. they arrived with blaring sirens to check on him and this is how the mayor described his condition. >> he looked good and he's very strong. had a strong hand shake and a strong conversation, so you know, it's a dangerous city and a lot of guns out there.

>> the officer has a two-year-old daughter. he's engaged a and we're told his fiance is by his side right now. his mother is in route. hart net was shot in the line of doughty earlier this year, so we asked police commissioner what this means for officers in that district specifically. we'll have his answers coming up in about 30 minutes. reporting live from the hospital, nbc 10 news. and as she just mentioned the shooting happened in the same area where another philadelphia police officer was shot back in january. officer jesse hartnet survived an ambush near 60th and spruce street. edward archer shot the officer in his police cruiser at point blank range. the shooting was caught on surveillance video. he managed to get out of his car and stop the alleged gunman. he attacked officer hartnet in the name of islam.

we continue to follow breaking news out of west philadelphia tonight. that's where a police officer was shot while trying to stop a car break-in. we're live on the scene with the latest. >> reporter: and two hours after this has happened you can still see there is still crime scene tape set up and invest guyer torrs are down there in the spot where they say the officer was shot in the leg. they're trying to gather some evidence down there. a gun still has not been recovered in this case. it was two officers on routine patrol. they were driving down here on market street. they saw a woman, she flagged them down saying two men were trying to steal her car. so when the officer went over to confront those men they began to run off. that officer, we're told, tackled one of the men and that's when he was shot in the leg. he got up and the officer returned fire three times.

for example, it's where i grew up. 57 degrees. i got my own weather conditions now. graduate hospital 58. fox chase at 60. now a couple of big weather stories, of course it's a warm start to the week, but we have pollen problems. let's start with the warm stuff. first of all, it was only in the 60s, the average high of 65. we got to 67 yesterday. 73 today. 80 degrees tomorrow a my prediction for the high temperature in philadelphia and also in some areas north and west as you'll see, but the pollen, that's bothering a lot of people who have allergies and you're not going to get any relief from this because we go through the next several days you're not getting any rain to wash the pollen out of the sky. not everybody is happy with this weather pattern.

is in the hospital right now by his side. reporting live, nbc 10 news. thanks, andrea. let's go live to drew smith who's live at the crime scene. >> reporter: i just got confirmation that this was indeed captured on surveillance video clear. they saw what happened here. there are city owned cameras up and down market street here as well as a camera on the corner store here right where that shooting happened. it was about 9:00. we shot some video out here of the police search that followed, but this all went down quickly because police had arrived on routine patrol when they saw a woman flagging them down telling them that two people were trying to steal her car. listen to commissioner ross explain what happened next. >> officer actually tackled the one male and he shot immediately and then he gets up, the suspect runs northbound and the officer attempting to chase him.

he can't do it because he's shot in his left leg. he then fires three times. >> reporter: and back here at the scene, i'm told this will be cleared in the next 60 minutes. now, besides that video that shows this clear shooting happening, that evidence will be used when they try to get these two people to trial and they release the official charges that they will be facing. there was some belongings to the suspect and there was that ballistic evidence from the shots fired. three from the officer and one from the suspect to the officer. >> new tonight from the nbc 10 trenton bureau. authorities say a driver nearly hit a pedestrian, then shot the man in the knee after they started to fight. a 20-year-old trenton man was walking near south clinton avenue when a vehicle nearly hit him. after the two men started arguing the driver got out, fired one shot at the victim and then drove off.

the pedestrian was treated at a hospital. a robbery suspect is dead after getting shot by police in cumberland county. authorities say around 1:00 this morning officers were chasing two men who they believed had robbed a person at 7th and cherry streets. during that chase investigators say one of the men shot at the men who then returned fire. the officer was not hurt. the other alleged robber got away. a school is coming back to life this week. officials from the school district will take part in a ground breaking ceremony tomorrow. cedar brook middle school has been vacant for the past two plus years after it was forced to close due to mold issues. the school will be rebuilt from the ground up and it's set to reopen september of next year. now for a look at some of the stories we're following this week. the pennsylvania attorney general has been ordered to appear at a pretrial motion set

to take place wednesday morning at the montgomery county courthouse. he's facing perjury and obstruction charges. she's accused of leaking secret grand jury information to the media and lying about it under oath. a ruling is expected wednesday for a local nun accused of driving drunk in gloster county. miller was arrested last november. this is dash cam video of her arrest. after an event at a bookstore she went back to her north philadelphia convent and took an ambien to help her sleep. she has a history of sleepwalking and an arthritic condition that she takes medicine for. the penitentiary is taking a hard look at mass incarceration in america. the new exhibit questions in the age of mass incarceration opens next month. it will include a criminal

let's go to chief meteorologist glen hurricane schwartz for the latest. >> even on a night like this with clear skies, we have some significant differences across the area and with the neighborhood weather we're able to show them to you and forecast them, area by area. neighborhood by neighborhood. right now it's 55 degrees. but in south jersey, 44 degrees. clear and calm. 60 degrees in lehigh valley. not usually that warm up to the north and west but the valley got the warmest during the day today. by tomorrow morning when you get up, 52 degrees in philadelphia but south jersey is going to be a little bit warmer than it is right now. so it's going to vary across the area. we can go into individual towns and give you a specific hour by hour forecast. coatsville for example in chester county starts off at 50 degrees. get into at least the mid to

underground. one of the first internet weather sites and one of the most respected in the entire world. well, we've got a very warm day coming. if you think it was warm today, wait till tomorrow. and then, it's just plain warm. the average high is 65 degrees for this time of the year and we're going to get warmer. here's some specific neighborhood forecasts. ever see a forecast in quaker town? it's sunny, but there's differences in the temperatures as we go through the day. it's certainly going to be cooler in atlantic city at 60 degrees. later in the afternoon, everybody's got sunshine during the day, then tuesday morning it's still relatively mild for this time of the year and then the afternoon, temperatures not quite as warm tuesday afternoon as what we're going to be seeing monday afternoon. we've got no rain anywhere. we don't have much in the way of clouds. we really have to go way back to the west to see anything.

that's in the middle of the country and even that's not going to be coming here any time soon, but if you're an allergy sufferer you want some rain to wash the pollen out of the sky. the pollen levels extremely high all the way through thursday. your only hope is friday when we get some rain. and you can see that in the 10-day forecast. we were the first station to bring you the 7-day forecast. that was way back around the turn of the century. well, the science has improved since then and we can produce some value all the way out to day ten. so for day one, 80 degrees in philadelphia. then a weak front comes through. it's only 71 on tuesday. that's still way above average. 66 wednesday, that's the cool day and it starts warming up again and stays dry through thursday and there's the rain on friday.
