superintendent and hearts are heavy tonight. >> i'm trying right now to be strong as mayor, but i intend to go home shortly and have a good cry for my friend. >> thanks for joining us tonight. >> school's throughout robbinsville closed tomorrow following the death of dr. mayer who was out for a jog with his dog this morning when he was hit by a car along robbinsville road. we are live in robbinsville. this is affecting so many there. we understand his wife is a teacher in the school district? >> reporter: indeed, she, jim. she teached the fourth grade, and together, they were raising three sons, two off to college and youngest, a junior at the high school just footsteps from where this terrible accident happened. we understand that loved ones did rush to the scene this morning when he didn't return home on time.

>> dr. mayer was a ball of energy. i mean he was smart, always wanted to be around, the flame that ignited so many things. >> at 52, he was doing what he loved, leading the school district, coaching little league, a pillar of this community and a mentor to young people. >> we're just going to be strong, be there for each other. >> what a wonderful man and how appreciation life is. >> reporter: he and his dog struck and killed near a pile of brush on the tiny shouter of robbinsville road, a senior on the way to high school early for a class trip behind the wheel pulled over. >> i know the family. my heart breaks for them too. this is a tragedy for both families. >> reporter: the mayor broke the news to the girl's family and says this week he spoke to mayer about the dangers of the road. >> it's a dangerous road and talk about preserving the space across the street from the high school this week because of the traffic on this road so it's

what happened. >> a very nice park, never had a problem. >> a lot of basketball players play over here and skate borders. it gets crowded, but i don't come here after, like, 7:00. >> police have not found any witnesses to the crime. if you have any information, they want to hear from you. >> the man accused of shooting a philadelphia police officer sunday night could be arraigned later today. nbc 10 is working to confirm when 23-year-old scott griffin will face a judge accused of shooting an officer sunday night. the officer interrupted a carjacking that griffin allegedly carried out with another man. we learned from court documents that griffin has 14 prior arrests and less than a week ago sitting in jail, but he was let go after a judge cited a lack of evidence because two witnesses did not show up to testify. the police officer is a two-year veteran of the police force and is back home with family this evening. skyforce10 over the scene as

the officer was released from the penn presbyterian hospital last night. a judge postponed a hearing from the man accused of ambushing two pennsylvania state trooper back in 2014 today in pike county. eric frein's lawyers argued his video recorded statement to police after his arrest should be thrown out. a judge asked reporters covering the case to leave the courtroom so he could watch the video, but those roberts objected, and the judge postponed the hearing. frein is charged with opening fire in 2014 killing dickson and wounding alex douglass. they were led on a 48-day man hunt before being captured. the defense is challenging prosecutors' plan to seek the death penalty. new at 6:00, the cash strapped town says they will sue the state of new jersey for the $33 million says it was promised. this, after the city paid back
