this afternoon. several vehicles involved, trucks, cars, pickup trucks and traffic was just backing up at 430. this crash involved, in fact, five cars and truckings. we know that two people are hurt and one of those injuries is minor. again, one lane of 76 west just reopened, however, the traffic trouble is forcing some people to detour into nearby king of prussia clogging up smaller roads as well. it's not clear how long this problem will last, but are keeping a close eye on the backup, and you can always monitor the situation by logging on to nbc10.com or the app for realtime updates. >> it's very, very hard right now. sadness and disbelief tonight after a south jersey school superintendent is hit and killed by a car while out for a jog. behind the wheel was a 17-year-old student on her way to school. >> dr. steven mayer was

superintendent and hearts are heavy tonight. >> i'm trying right now to be strong as mayor, but i intend to go home shortly and have a good cry for my friend. >> thanks for joining us tonight. >> school's throughout robbinsville closed tomorrow following the death of dr. mayer who was out for a jog with his dog this morning when he was hit by a car along robbinsville road. we are live in robbinsville. this is affecting so many there. we understand his wife is a teacher in the school district? >> reporter: indeed, she, jim. she teached the fourth grade, and together, they were raising three sons, two off to college and youngest, a junior at the high school just footsteps from where this terrible accident happened. we understand that loved ones did rush to the scene this morning when he didn't return home on time.

>> dr. mayer was a ball of energy. i mean he was smart, always wanted to be around, the flame that ignited so many things. >> at 52, he was doing what he loved, leading the school district, coaching little league, a pillar of this community and a mentor to young people. >> we're just going to be strong, be there for each other. >> what a wonderful man and how appreciation life is. >> reporter: he and his dog struck and killed near a pile of brush on the tiny shouter of robbinsville road, a senior on the way to high school early for a class trip behind the wheel pulled over. >> i know the family. my heart breaks for them too. this is a tragedy for both families. >> reporter: the mayor broke the news to the girl's family and says this week he spoke to mayer about the dangers of the road. >> it's a dangerous road and talk about preserving the space across the street from the high school this week because of the traffic on this road so it's

always been a concern, and, you know, something that we, we do worry about. >> reporter: right now, they are just focused on pulling the community together to remember the positive. >> he never gave up on any single student. >> in honor of dr. mayer, we'll find our way back to normal as appropriately as possible. steve always put the students' needs first. >> reporter: dozens, if notes, too big advantage of the grief counselling at the high school today. >> he did a lot in the town, and his wife is a teacher at the same school and everything, so it's very, very hard right now. >> reporter: police so far have not issued any citations in the fatal crash. all families knew one another in the tight-knit community, some showing up now, but hundreds gather to lean on one another an hour from now, a vigil set here for fox moore park at 7:00 p.m. nbc 10 news. happening now, a traffic

alert if you're headed into delaware, road crews are doing repair work on the delaware memorial bridge as you see here. we are overhead this afternoon only one southbound lane is open. crews are pairing several suspender cables. the work is expected to be finished by tomorrow morning. and to decision 2016. voters are headed to the polls in new york today in that state's crucial primary. polls don't close for another three hours there, but some candidates are already starting to focus on the keystone state. pennsylvania primaries are exactly one week from now. april 26 is the day. the push to win pa is reaching a fever pitch. bernie sanders is campaigning in pennsylvania holding this rally in erie this afternoon. meanwhile, he has star backing in the first state. nbc 10 bureau reporter is live in wilmington. >> lauren, two big names are scooping up support for sanders there today. >> reporter: yeah, you know, guys, it is not uncommon for

candidates to send out celebrities or folks to help them because they can't be everywhere. ice cream superstars ben and jerry who just left the post here, but look at the crowd that gathered for some sweet politics. it's an ice cream social not just for kids. voters are who they are after to support bernie sanders. >> jerry and i have never in ours before campaigned for a presidential candidate, but this is finally a candidate worth voting for, worth campaigning for, worth going out there and doing whatever you can do to get him elected. >> reporter: that's ben of ben a and jerry. jerry in the blue. they are dishing out ice with a chocolate disk on top representing the wealth. fans are encouraged to whack it with a spoon. >> mix it and put the money back to where it's supposed to be in the hands of the people who really created it.

new york primary results tonight. we met a family who happened to be in town visiting. they heard about this event, and they wanted to see the gop hopeful in person. moments before senator ted cruz's big arrival at the national constitution center, we met a family trying to get last minute tickets to see him. did you know this would be here today? >> we didn't. we were actually just checking out the museum, and noticed all the cameras, and we're very excited about seeing cruz tonight. >> reporter: the family visiting from boston, while in town checking out the museum in old city, they heard about the watch party. it's a chance for amy russell and her family to be a part of a rare opportunity. >> it makes it all come alive, really, i mean, we're looking at the constitution and how it all got put together, and now we're going to see a live event. >> reporter: amy russell said although her sons are not old enough to vote, they are invested in the presidential race. we expect to hear from senator

what happened. >> a very nice park, never had a problem. >> a lot of basketball players play over here and skate borders. it gets crowded, but i don't come here after, like, 7:00. >> police have not found any witnesses to the crime. if you have any information, they want to hear from you. >> the man accused of shooting a philadelphia police officer sunday night could be arraigned later today. nbc 10 is working to confirm when 23-year-old scott griffin will face a judge accused of shooting an officer sunday night. the officer interrupted a carjacking that griffin allegedly carried out with another man. we learned from court documents that griffin has 14 prior arrests and less than a week ago sitting in jail, but he was let go after a judge cited a lack of evidence because two witnesses did not show up to testify. the police officer is a two-year veteran of the police force and is back home with family this evening. skyforce10 over the scene as

the officer was released from the penn presbyterian hospital last night. a judge postponed a hearing from the man accused of ambushing two pennsylvania state trooper back in 2014 today in pike county. eric frein's lawyers argued his video recorded statement to police after his arrest should be thrown out. a judge asked reporters covering the case to leave the courtroom so he could watch the video, but those roberts objected, and the judge postponed the hearing. frein is charged with opening fire in 2014 killing dickson and wounding alex douglass. they were led on a 48-day man hunt before being captured. the defense is challenging prosecutors' plan to seek the death penalty. new at 6:00, the cash strapped town says they will sue the state of new jersey for the $33 million says it was promised. this, after the city paid back

remaining $4.2 million in taxes it owed schools today. the $33 million it says the state owes would have come from a rescue package stalled in the legislature today. at a hearing, the state argued atlantic city has duty to turn over money to the schools once it gets it from next month's taxes. >> additionally, the schools have a net. they have a constitutional safety net, and that's one of the things the judge had to consider in making his decision. >> even after today's payment, the city still owes the school district $25.5 million by july 15th. next on nbc 10 news at 6:00, fans under fire, a tribute turning into an embarrassing event on the ice. today's fallout that followed straight ahead. plus, dry and warm today, i'll let you know when to expect our next chance of rain. is katie mcginty. she came from a working-class family. she was ninth of 10 kids. she gets it. she'll fight for equal pay for equal work.

that's the flyers's public address announcer urging fans to show class. the fans under fire tonight for tossing bracelets on to the ice during last night's loss to washington. the bracelets were handed out to memorialize the late owner, ed snider. with the flyers on the brink of elimination, the fans are front and center tonight.

the area. let me show you an example of the detail we can show you. 60s north and west, 70 in the philadelphia area, and cooler at the shore. you see the winds, the sea breeze meeting the land breeze, and what a different it makes when the temperatures. it got up to eight in atlantic city earlier, and now 58. mays landing at 72. huge contrast, and we can see the sea breeze moving hour by hour with all the new data we have. it's been warm and dry over. we've gone a week without any rain, and 82 degrees yesterday, and 78 today, and 70 tomorrow. even though we cooled off tomorrow, it's still above average. with all the dry weather, the pollen continues to build and can't get washed out until we get rain, and maybe on friday, that's why we may drop a little bit when that pollen meter then goes right back up over the weekend because they are not

expecting a lot of rain on friday. let's see where the rain is. you can see there's certainly none around here. you have to go far back, still west of chicago before we can see any kind of rain and we'll how fast it moves in, so we go through time, by 8:00 on wednesday, there's nothing. it is sunny all day tomorrow, and by thursday, we're starting to see some clouds come in, and as you can see by the evening, the showers are getting sba central pennsylvania, and by friday, now we're seeing the showers get closer and maybe even some briefly heavy showers that could be useful in knocking the pollen out. here's the neighborhood forecast, pick your spot, you can see your neighborhood's forecast. you can also see your neighborhood's seven day down at the screen. all the time, every weather cast. temperatures down into the 60s.
