rainy weather yesterday amp. monique braxton is following the stoi story for us, and seat belts were a factor in the crash? >> reporter: that's right, jim. we can tell you so much of this investigation remains a mystery. it's still very active. now, investigators are here trying to determine exactly why a car going northbound here on henry would lose control and veer into the southbound lanes. we've learned of nine people involved today, two of them have passed away. >> so you can imagine it was a horrific scene for the first responders. >> reporter: investigators say before 4:00 sunday, two offduty police officers rushed to the scene moments after the deadly accident. they could only do so much. three of the seven crash victims in the car that police say caused the crash were ejected. two women in their 20s seated in the front. >> two adult females up front were ejected from the vehicle

upon the collision, and the little 6-year-old was ejected halfway out the back window, and that's the one who did not survive. >> reporter: the 6-year-old who died was one of the four children in the backseat of the car. a seven week old baby was in a car seat in the back along with his 20-year-old father, wilson, who has also passed away. everyone surviving is in critical condition. investigators say no one was wearing a is the, and only the baby was in a car seat, but they are not sure that it was properly restrained. >> clearly, if it was proper, there would be less severe injuries or maybe not anybody killed. we still don't know because you can get an internal injury from a crash like that, but so important for seat belts, especially children like that. >> reporter: investigators tell us that this part of henry avenue was wet when the accident happened, and they say witnesses tell them they don't believe drugs or alcohol or even

within the last 15 minutes. day one of jury selection wrapping up in the federal corruption trial and four of his associates, and the federal government alleges they all took part in a racketeering conspiracy, and we have been at federal court all day. joining us live with a firsthand account of what happened inside court. deanna? >> reporter: seconds ago, the congressman left through the sixth street entrance here from the federal court house, walk past the cameras, and did not say anything. 255 people brought in in morning sitting here all day long seeing if they would be part of the jury. just. the last ten minutes, about half of the jury pool was sent home. >> this congressman has not shied away talking about the political record or innocence in the past when discussing the federal indictment dependence him. as he prepares to come face to face with the jury to decide the outcome of the case, his

comments are brief. 250 men and women gather at the federal courthouse this morning, answering questionnaires, answering to all lawyers representing defts, and now they are in a pool to judge the congressmen and four alleged co-conspirators. they will sect 12 people to sit through six weeks of testimony and talk about fake contracts. the congressman is the most famous, and all five sit through the same trial and the single jury will decide the fate of each. the others, you may not know, herbert, worked for ed rendell for mayor. if alleged, he contacted president obama for an ambassadorship. they believe he tried to bribe the congressman and the wife, former news anchor, prosecutors say that they kept the car and used the money for a pocono vacation home. another accused of fake

contracts to hide how grant money was used. bowser alleged to be part of the plot to violate laws in the failed run for mayor. she had a nonprofit, and it's alleged she spent educational grant money. two other individuals have pled guilty in connection with the case. it is expected that they will testify, again, about half that jury pool sent home. the other half told they'll need to come back tomorrow and need to answer questions posed to them by the lawyers and judge in this case. reporting live outside the federal courthouse, n b.c. 10 news. >> before you go, the five defendants in court together? have they interacted add all? >> reporter: it was an interesting day. it was not a traditional court hearing. the congressman was in the courtroom with his attorney, and then the co-defendants with their attorneys, and another co-defendant on the side, and two others spent the morning away from that courtroom.

they all came together, though, when they were in front of that massive jury pool all sitting in a line of tables, a line of rows, but separated by attorneys so none of the co-defendants sat next to each other. >> all right, thanks for that explanation. coming up at 4:45, a defense attorney joins us live to break down what the lawyers are looking for in a potential juror. jerry sandusky's lawyer tried to get the child molestation convictions thrown out. the lawyers want to question witnesses about whether he was unfairly convicted. today, the judge voiced doubt that kind of questioning is legally allowed. the judge did not say when he would make his decision. the 72-year-old ex-coach is receivering 30-60 years in state prison. 20 minutes of nonstop news continues with breaking news in burks county where a school bus and car collide in spring township on schillington road.

we just arrive on scene. lauren, what can you tell us? >> reporter: well, thankfully, no serious injuries here, 17 children taken to the hospital. this is where it happened here. this is schillington road here behind me, where the bus was, taking a left here when they were hit from behind. let me show you just when we arrived on scene, pulling the bus out of here. this is what it looked like. you can see the bus was hit from behind. now, i'm told the driver of the vehicle that hit the bus was also injured and taken to the hospital. there were 36 children on that bus from southern middle school. they were headed back to the middle school after a school trip. 17 of them taken to the hospital, two taken in ambulance for some minor injuries, perhaps some bumps and scrapes, and then 15 of them were taken by another bus to the hospital to be checked out. also for minor things, some of them shake p up, as you can imagine from this accident.

now, they were going back to southern middle school after the trip to berks career and technology center, an opportunity for the kids to see that center and then head back to their school. that's what they were doing when this accident happened. no word at this point from police whether anyone, the driver of the other vehicle, will be cited at this point, but, again, parents are now being notified if they should head to the hospital to kick up their children today. live in spring township, nbc 10 news. >> a frightening call to get, thank you. a missing 4-year-old boy found dead in a swimming pool. the boy accidently drowned in egg harbor township saturday night. his parents told police the boy had gotten out of their home, and the boy has not been identified, but police have not said if charges would be filed. two lehigh county based missionaries who dedicated their lives to ministry were murdered.

they were killed on the way to work on a home they were building for a family in need. they were working with teams for medical missions. the state department tells nbc 10 the u.s. ambassador is working with security officials there regarding the investigation. running on fumes. that's how at lap tick city's mayor describes the city's financial picture this afternoon, but ac was able to scrape together enough money for a major bond payment. the mayor says the city made the payment this morning after considering the effects on cities around the state if they did not pay up. the city says they are teetering on the edge. >> the saturation of casinos in the northeast, four closing here in atlantic city, and massive, inherited legacy debt from years of bad decisions by all levels

of government. >> state lawmakers continue to argue over potential takeover plan for the city that the governor supports. pen-dot gives drivers a break, allowing them to step off the gas on pennsylvania turnpikes. the crews will begin installing new 70 miles per hour signs for areas where the speed limit is 65 right now. toll plazas and a stretch of the bensalem interchange remain at 55 miles per hour. another historic day in cuba for the first time in four decades. the first u.s. cruise ship crossed straits from miami and docked in havana this morning. more than 700 passengers made the cruise ship. back in march, they got the okay to offer cruises between the ports twice a month. ♪ philadelphia celebrates mexican culture this week.

the celebration began outside city hall this morning. the mayor helped raise the mexican flag here. events continue throughout the week to celebrate mexico through diverse art, food, music, and traditions. decision 2016 coverage, the party front runners for president hope a big win in indiana tomorrow gives them cake walk right to the nomination. donald trump is predicting a knockout blow in tomorrow's republican primariment he says a win for him equals the end for texas senator ted cruz. trump cannot win enough delegates tomorrow to actually clench the nomination, but indiana is a win or take all stake, and a trump win gets him much closer. here's a live look at the trump rally in indiana. he has not taken the stage just yet. we can tell you, though, that the latest nbc news wall street journal has trump with a 15 point lead in the hoosier state.

end of the weather, it's not a philadelphia seven-day anymore. nothing on the ray door close by, but there's a lot of moisture coming, and it's coming real fast. not fast enough to get here in the next few hours, but it is going to get here rp, and we'vet heavy rain tonight. that's the top story here in weather. obviously, by 6:00, not much here, but real amazing increase as we go through the evening. 8:30 we see activity coming into chester county, and by 11:00, you're going to have showers and storms all over the place. some of it very heavy. more coming through the middle of the night, so it's just going to pile up. there's going to be a lot of ponding on the roads by tomorrow morning's rush. look at that. 4:30 in the morning, we're stil day tomorrow, we see the rain taper off, but we're going to stay cloudy and get some fog as well.

how much rain? well, the computer models show a lot of it. this is just overnight tonight, 3 inches in newkaszle, 3.1 in newark, and so a lot of rain in delaware, a lot of rain in chester county, too, westchester, 1.7, delaware, 2.7. 2.1 in cherry hill. we're not going to hit those exact numbers. this is a computer projection. they are not perfect. the temperature forecast out of the computer model is not perfect either which is why we make these forecasts. these are not straight out of computers like on most mobile devices. 60 different forecasts, we make every single day. westchester, 60 degrees tomorrow. it's not going to rain all day. it's not necessarily going to be heavy, but another not real pleasant day here. haddonfield at 61 with some

he says he was never asked to move the vehicle, and the construction company blames a sub contractor for the move and says the owner is compensated for the damages. women in new jersey may be able to get birth control without a doctor's prescription. a bill in the state senate allows pharmacist to prescribe them directly to women. lawmakers who support the legislation say it makes getting birth control more violent and less expensive than seeing a doctor. >> too hot, now too cold. the latest controversy in starbucks accused of using too much ice in the coal drinks. an illinois woman is suing the giant for $5 million claiming customers end up with half the amount of drink because of the amount of ice used in iced beverages. the spokeswoman tells us the woman's claims are without merit. glen? well, get ready for more rain. not much in the next few hours, but tracking heavy showers moving in tonight. when it's going to hit your neighborhoods next in the first alert forecast.

a week after losing the congressional seat, off to court. >> jury selection underway in the federal corruption trial of the 11 termed congressman. joining us now is defense attorney, and thank you for joining us. first of all, tell us what his attorneys are going to be looking for in a juror? >> well, you're looking for a very fair and impartial jury. in a high case like this, that's difficult. you're allowed to ask the jury certain questions when picking them out. for instance, you can ask them questions like, are you aware of the former trial where he was found guilty? did you follow that trial? have you read things in the media about this case? do you have an opinion in reference to that? you ask things in reference to, are you politically involved with maybe something that's against him or any kind of

political opponent. it's very important you find a fair and impartial juror who has a free and open mind and listens to the facts in the case. >> what kind of defense is there for bribery and racketeering charges like these? >> well, these are intent base cases. they have to show he intended to do certain things. now, just because, you know, you have to remember politicians are people too. they know people. just because a person or a friend or somebody does something for a politician and this politician independently was going to do something for that person doesn't mean it's bribely. there has to be a direct correlation between i did something for you and i now do something for you to repay what you did for me. that's bribery. just because things are done for people they know or friends or affiliations doesn't mean there's bribery. there's defenses for, you know, for political accounting or things of that nature. also, necessarily mean he did

different things. he runs a big organization. people might have done things on his behalf he was not aware of. >> what about family history? you mentioned the past case involving his son convicted. do you think the jury would be swayed by that fact? >> that's why you ask that question. i mean, that was a case that was highly publicized, information came out, and his name was used in a lot of the publications and different things that came out about his son's case. you don't want that to be something that sways the jury. it's definitely something you want to poll the jury for and ask if they have any kind of bias in reference to the former case. >> thank you for your time and insignificant. >> you're welcome. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with chief meteorologist glen "hurricane" schwartz. yeah, one of those days with wild variations in the area. a cloudy, chilly day in parts, and warm in other parts. we're still at 59 degrees in
