till death he did part. >> that's all for this edition of "dateline." i'm lester hol right now at 11:00, dmeonal trump and joe biden together. a philadelphia man accused of dousing his girlfriend with gasoline, setting her on fire and leaving her for dead. today outside the courtroom, he said he killed someone he loved when he started that fire. good evening. that arson sparked an evacuation of the lincoln motel in bucks county just after 2:00 this morning. more from the suspect's apparent confession.

>> reporter: bandaged and handcuffed, he showed no emotions. tell us what happened. >> lost it. >> reporter: the 46-year-old is charged with setting a fire at the lincoln hotel that killed his girlfriend. >> people was running down the hallway. everybody was like get out, get out, there's fire. >> reporter: surveillance video from across the street shows small putting gas into a coffee cup. according to the affidavit, he returned to his first floor room at the motel. then it said just after 2:00 this morning, he threw gasoline in her face as she smoked a cigarette. small said because he was angry. >> we believe she reached out to him and yelled his name and he left her in there to die. >> reporter: authorities found small walking in the area. his hands were burned and he smelled like gas. small's family contacted authorities saying he called them confessing to the crime. nbc 10 was there as police were

hauling him away. when we asked -- do you think you should go to jail? >> slide over. slide over. >> reporter: the victim was also 46 years old. we spoke to her family. they said they're not ready yet to go on camera. they want you to know that she's loved by many and will truly be missed. she leaves behind four children and seven grandchildren. two of the biggest names in national politics are celebrating their families in philadelphia tonight. vice president joe biden and donald trump sat in the audience for a university of pennsylvania graduation event. drew smith tracks both big names from university city. ♪ >> reporter: among the penn college of arts and sciences graduates in their caps and

sitting froze spe inting presid rutgers. the president will award robert wilson the third with the public safety officer medal of valor. he was shot and killed during a robbery at a north philadelphia game stop store in march of last year. his family is expected to attend the white house ceremony. tomorrow begins one of the most prominent trials of a politician in our area. opening arguments are set to start in the federal racketeering case against u.s. representative shakka fatah. >> reporter: it was on this exact day nine years ago that his bid for philadelphia mayor ended. he lost the primary may 15th, 2007. nearly a decade later,

allegations rooted in that campaign bring fatah and four others to federal court. >> it's a great day. >> reporter: that's the congressman the day the 12-member six alternate jury was seated for his corruption trial. he is accused of misusing campaign money, misappropriating government funds. among the allegations, that he tried to arrange a federal grant to a consultant through a fake organization to eliminate a campaign debt. >> the defense will spend a lot of time i believe discussing what the prosecution doesn't have. >> reporter: this man is a defense attorney not involved in the case. he says the prosecution will have to prove a direct correlation in what happened. >> this case is going to come down to the prosecutors having to prove mental state. it's not just proving something happened. it's not proving that you gave me something or you did something for me and i possibly did something for you and i did something for you. that's not enough. >> reporter: four alleged co-conspirators face trial. >> it is going to go for a long

time. >> reporter: that's because each defendant's attorney will get to cross examine witnesses. the trial is expected to last for weeks. thousands laced up their sneakers for the anti-defamation league's walk against hate. at the philadelphia navy yard where the walk kicked off with live music this morning. the goal of the walk is to celebrate diversity and equal rights for everybody. the mayor served as this year's grand marshal. now to our first alert neighborhood weather as we take a live look at center city on this chilly sunday night. it's windy out there. in some of the suburbs temperatures are in the 40s and going lower. glen hurricane schwartz is here tracking how long it will stick around. >> it's the middle of may, right? doesn't feel like it. we have frost and freeze warnings in parts of the area

federal authorities will investigate the charter bus crash that killed nine people in south texas yesterday. dozens more were hurt. that bus was on its way to a casino on the texas/mexico border when it rolled just before noon. the county medical examiner describes it as the worst commercial vehicle accident she has seen in a decade. it was raining at the time of the accident. no word yet if that contributed to the crash. tens of thousands of fans were told to leave a soccer stadium in england after a suspicious device was found shortly before the match. turns out it was a life-like but fake training device accidentally left at the stadium in manchester by a private company during an exercise. sniffer dogs were brought in along with a bomb squad which conducted a controlled explosion. police then swept the stadium.

>> got us away from the stadium. they didn't want us being there. >> the premiere league defended its decision to cancel the game saying the safety of supporters and employees must be put first. tonight in montgomery county, a popular clerk is overwhelmed with community support from neighbors helping him recover from a shooting. a we love you charlie event today raised money for charles miller. he was shot when he tried to knock a gun away from a robber last month. tonight, he enjoyed an outpouring of love. the doors opened to the vfw. and people showed by the dozens for beloved store clerk charlie miller. >> never expected anything like this. >> a robber shot miller last month during his overnight shift at the 7-eleven.

>> basically a shadow in front of the door. came out, standing there with a gun in my face. >> a gun shot to his leg broke his bone in several spots. a second shot missed him and hit a wall. the gunman's third attempt to shoot miller failed when the gun jammed. >> the whole community i think was affected by this. >> organizers say the outpouring shows his impact on the community. >> he was there when our kids were little. they could ride their bikes to 7 eleven and get a slurpy. >> with him being shot, the only thing he was concerned about is it didn't happen during summer or during the day when the kids were around. never mind the fact that he had a bullet in his leg. >> police arrested lamar kevin sole for the shooting saying he robbed the same store four months earlier. he is charged with two other robberies. anyone who knows charlie miller knows his smile.

43 in collegeville. milford township, 41. those places are definitely getting down into the 30s and there's going to be some patchy frost. in new jersey, most of these places are not as cold because there's more wind here. normally cold places like millville and vineland are 45, 48 degrees. we have to go north. princeton, 36 degrees. they're probably going to get below freezing as well. we have the frost advisory in effect for lehigh valley and northampton county. there's nothing on the radar close by. but we have activity that's going to be coming in. it's going to take a long time. it's way out to the west. we have that unseasonably chilly weather. it's just unbelievable how cold it has been today compared to yesterday. it was 76. 59 for the high sunday. only 64 for the next couple of

they finish years of hard training and tonight more than a dozen rotc cadets will become commissioned officers. nbc 10 and widener university for the commissioning ceremony. 16 cadets from five local universities were commissioned as second lieutenants in the u.s. army. parents were there to pin the newly earned ranks on the shoulders of their uniforms. an 89-year-old war veteran is riding his harley from coast to coast to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country. bruce hillman served in the marines during world war ii. last month, he set off from california on his way to washington, d.c. he should get there by memorial day. he says his 6,000 mile ride is a way to remember the true meaning of memorial day. >> memorial day is more than hot dogs and marshmallows and that we all should recognize everything we do that our

following this week on nbc 10 news. one year after the deadly amtrak derailment, federal investigators are set to reveal a cause. the national transportation safety board is scheduled to release its findings at a meeting in washington, d.c. this tuesday. eight people died and 200 others were hurt when amtrak train 188 derailed a year ago last thursday. opening arguments are set to begin tomorrow in the case against congressman chaka fattah. the congressman is accused of accepting bribes and misusing funds. several former aides or allies are charged. that trial is scheduled to last about six weeks. also tomorrow, philadelphia officials are set to announce a new homeless outreach strategy for center city. the mayor and city leaders will name four center city locations or hot spots. they will deploy street outreach teams to help the homeless with

fraud is getting worse. the pennsylvania attorney general filed documents related to a case in allentown. nbc 10 investigator george spencer has been looking into the cases around our area. he found a judge's ruling is not always enough. >> reporter: preparing his family's friday night dinner, his chores are similar to those of many american fathers. for him, becoming an american citizen has been a decade long goal. >> i start here every year, taxes. i got everything. >> reporter: that dream has been damaged by the very person who claimed to be helping. this is a lot of money. >> it is. >> reporter: for $9,500 plus fees, he believed this man would file his emigration papers. he says he claimed to be a lawyer and promised to work closely to immigration and bring

the necessary satisfaction. but now two years later, he admitted to us he never even submitted the application. >> i did not. >> reporter: you did not? >> i did not. >> reporter: he paid you more than $9,000. immigration spikes. there have been $39 complaint from our region. there's no way to fully measure how much of the fraud occurs because so many victims never tell law enforcement. this attorney says new victims arrive in her office every week. >> they are preying on people's fears. they are preying on people's hopes and dreams. >> reporter: sometimes the fraud is based on shared heritage. other times like this man's case it hinges on a single word. that word signifies a specialized attorney. but in the u.s., it's a notary public with no authority to

practice law. >> it's a very misleading name. >> reporter: this man, the philadelphia district director of u.s. citizenship and immigration services tells us they may promise to fast track applications or offer legal services they are not qualified to provide. often it damages an immigrant's chance of citizenship. >> it's targeting people who are really not aware of what benefits they are eligible for. >> reporter: potentially have a lot to lose? >> absolutely. >> reporter: the nbc 10 investigators discovered even after the accused go to court, they don't always follow the rules. in february of last year, after finding him liable for more than $57,000 in damages, a judge prohibited soloman from advertising or offer rg ing services. yet when we visited him last month, we found those very words painted right on the wall of his

waiting room. when we asked about it, he suddenly climbed up on to a stool and began cover rg up the painted writing with paper as our cameras rolled. why were they up there? you didn't see that? >> i didn't see that up there. >> reporter: this is the door you walk through every day. he showed us other spots where the words had been hidden from view and insists he never told anyone he is an attorney nor called himself an notario. submitting the application could would have exposed him to deportation, a distraction according to stein. you knew it didn't work like this? >> yeah. >> reporter: the victim says the loss of nearly $10,000 is overshadowed by his loss of

now we're waiting for the next weather system to come in. that is out here in the plains states. it's going to be racing east. it will bring us rain this week. it has been unseasonably chilly over the last 24 hours. it's going to be unseasonably chilly all the way through tuesday. 59 degrees was the high today after a high of 76 yesterday. we don't get close to that average high of 74 over the next couple of days. then as it warms up, the rain starts coming in. here we are 1:00 monday. there's not any rain on monday. monday night, we're pretty much okay. here comes the rain on tuesday. we're not necessarily talking about a lot of rain. but it could be enough hours of it to affect a lot of people. could last even into early wednesday in some parts of the area. that computer model keeping it to the south after early wednesday morning.

here we go with the final round of the players championship. jason day chipping from the rough on 9. looking like a lot of people i know including yours truly. a couple shots way short of the green for day who double bogeys the hole. he gets back in the groove on 10. his first birdie of the day at that point. moves to a three-stroke lead. his son dash is fighting the defending champ rickie fowler who did not make the cup. he watched jason day tap in on 18 for the win at 15 under. dash is done sparring. he is celebrating with dad who became the first golfer with multiple wire to wire wins in the same season as a guy named tiger woods in 2002.

hospital. >> new jersey high school pitchers jason and tyler they will go head to head to raise money to strike out cancer. >> winning the all american day, we visited the children's hospital. it was an eye opening experience. a lot of my family members suffered from cancer. i just want to give them as much money as i can to know i did something right for one of the kids there. >> our grandfather has been good with our team, does background check. just helped the family out. whatever i can do to make that easier for them. >> on june 9, they will probably both by selected in baseball's draft. they have the same adviser. they want to see each other make the show. >> i thought it was cool. a couple days later, he threw a no hitter. you one upped me. it's good. seeing him do well and same with me to success.
