the man that the two children he had seen were both dead. >> reporter: the police found both of the children dead here last night. >> what. >> reporter: and according to police she admitted to smothering them to death with a bed sheet. >> oh god. oh god. >> that man says the woman told him she was stressed out because she could only stay in florida until friday and didn't have any money to get back to philadelphia. as you heard earlier some relatives think the woman may have shown simple tomz of postpartum depression. it impacts about one in seven mother. d it is the most common complication of childbirth. sadnesses and hopeless innocence and difficulty bonding with the

baby. it begins a week to a month after delivery but can began outside of that window as well. we have posted more information about warnings signs and treatment on the nbc 10 app. decision 2016 coverage now in the past two hours president obama endorsed hillary clinton to succeed him as president. >> i don't think there's ever been someone so qualified to hold this office. >> the president released this three minute youtube video endorsing hillary clinton this afternoon. he called on the party to unify behind the former secretary of state. the president's announcement came a couple of hours after he met with clinton's challenger bernie sanders at the white house. the two spoke in the white house about the future of sanders' campaign. the vermont senator saying he'll work with clinton to defeat donald trump in november but stopped short of dropping out.

>> i look forward to meeting with her in the near future to see how we can work together to defeat donald trump and to create a government which represents all of us and not just the 1%. >> sanders still planning a rally for tonight in washington, d.c. which holds its primary next tuesday. a school bus crash officials say the bus was driving northbound on broad street when it struck a parked truck. both the bus and truck jumped the cush. several children on that bus were taken to the hospital. they are expected to be okay. no other injuries have been reported. officials are working to find out what caused this crash. new information into nbc 10 right now. police saying the man who fired a shot while driving down i-95 during rush hour is off the street. police leading the 33-year-old man here just a short time ago.

he's accused of firing the shot at another driver near the bridge tuesday morning. no one was injured. gilbert claims the shooting was accidental. a 92-year-old man known to his neighbors as b.b. who fought in world war ii died today when his home caught fire and he could not get out. neighbors called 911. it happened around 12:30 this morning. the firefighters tried to save the man but they couldn't get to him in time. >> he had one leg but he used a wheelchair and walker and he got that thing to go up and down the steps. he was a very nice person. >> investigators are still trying to figure out how the fire started and if there were working smoke detectors inside that home. now your nbc 10 first alert neighborhood weather. here is a live look at the scene from our campus camera. look at that beautiful shot of city hall. cool and sunny day.

it's going to get cooler tonight. our meteorologist is here now with a look at the forecast. >> it was windy out there today too. >> a little breezy. >> a chilly night ahead. once the sun goes down the temperature is going to go down with it. we're at 75 degrees in philadelphia. that's the warmest we've been all day. it's only 70 despite sunshine in the lee high valley and northern and western suburbs also in the 70s. barely into the 70s. look around the philadelphia area. it's only 72 in chestnut hill, 74 degrees in fox chase and 75 in summerton. we've had sunshine across the entire area. there are no clouds headed our way for tonight or tomorrow. so look what happens with the clear skies overnight. look how cools it gets in the morning. a 5 in philadelph5 in philadelp. lee high valley 45 degrees. do you think you're going to

need a coat in the morning. jersey shore at 57. we're going to be seeing a big warm up as we head to the weekend but another round of thunderstorms. i'll have the timing on that in a few minutes. >> see you soon. soda tax deal that could change how much you pay for sugary drinks in philadelphia. city council will vote on that plan next week. it passed the committee last night but with changes to the original proposal. we are live in center city to explain the changes and what it means for you at the checkout counter. >> reporter: this is a tax on distributors but if passed down get ready to pay more for things like soda, flavored water and sports drink. council learned the money won't go to benefit children. some will be used to boost the city's bank account. a tax on sugary drinks is expected to become a reality in

philadelphia. it's a compromise to the mayor's initial plan that despite the majority of support still comes with plenty of concern. >> had we known that the balance was going to be funded out of this particular tax there would have been a different level of discussion. >> reporter: in addition to raising money for schools and improving recreation centers the tax will be used to help the city's depleted fund balance, a change council was made aware of in the 11th hour. the mayor responded to criticism about the late notification. >> it's 4% of the money expected to be raised so it didn't seem like it rose to the level of any type of discussion. >> reporter: clark says after expected passage next week discussions will continue on how the money will be spent. residents will continue to take sides. >> there will be more money out of their pockets just in taxes, not just so much the small businesses which could hurt restaurants and all that. >> i think it's a good

compromise. we have to get the money from somewhere. >> reporter: the money will be diverted to the fund balance for three years. he says the criticism that he's received is coming as being magnified by the soda industry still trying to stall his plan but he expects to discuss with the administration and talk with them about transparency. the final vote is expected next thursday. nbc 10 news. hundreds of new jobs are am cooing to the valley after fedex breaks ground. it will employ about 600 people and process 6,000 packages an hour. construction will begin later this month and is expected do be finished by september 2018. exclusive video showing a crash involving a philadelphia

police cruiser overnight. you can see at the top of the screen the driver throws his car into reverse, hits the police cruiser and then speeds away. this happened during a traffic stop at 21th and carpenter. the officers weren't hurt but police are looking for the driver who took off. a search for an escaped inmate in delaware this hour. he scaled the fence at the correction center sunday night. the center houses offenders are who transitioning back into the community. roberts had been serving time for theft. a former delaware high school teacher and coach who admitted having sex with a student apologized in court today. today richard learned he will spend seven years in prison. in february howell pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a girl. authorities say there were several encounters at the school

and his home two years ago. it's been an emotional day in louisville, kentucky where muhammad ali is being remembered today. some 14,000 people gathered for a traditional muslim funeral for ali. the boxing great passed away last fright. friday. former president bill clinton will deliver the you olg there. you can watch the services live tomorrow afternoon. the israeli military says it has revoked most permits for palestinians to visit israel during the holy month. that comes after two men killed four israelis yesterday. thousands of police officers are expected to fan out across the old city tomorrow to keep the peace during prayers. probably heard about that

stanford swimmer who was sentenced to six months for sexually assaulting a woman. many were outraged by that sentence and now he may get to leave jail earlier. he will only serve half his sentence if he keeps a clean record. he was convicted of attacking the woman january much last year. memos obtained shows turner lied to the court about his drug use and drinking. prosecutors had asked turner to be sentenced to six years in prison. this afternoon it's illegal for teenagers to buy cigarettes in california. a new law raising the smoking age to 21 took effect in the state today. military personnel with identification can still buy tobacco products if their 18 but they have to show an id card. the smoking age is 18 in pennsylvania and delaware. it's 19 in new jersey. lawmakers are considering a bill to raise the smoking age to 21.

looking less likely that you'll be able to enjoy a cold beer on the hot board walk in atlantic city this summer after all. the council is delaying a vote to allow open containers on the board. it was expected to consider the idea last night but it can't consider it until the july meeting at the earlest. the city of easton is so desperate to collect money for unpaid parking tickets that it's giving drivers a discount. drivers with unpaid fines can clear their record if they pay at least half of the fines owed within two weeks. the city hasn't been able to collect about $767,000. new walking and biking trail will help build bridges between some of philadelphias neighborhoods. the mayor and several city leaders broke ground on the trail today. that path will be just over one mile long and starts in the park and running along the same spot

of the former railroad. when it's finished it will connect the neighborhoods. >> we're committed to continuing another administration's efforts on open space. green space is important. access to the river. >> parks and rec expects the trail to be finished next year. philadelphia has a new strategy to try to protect cy e cyclists from getting hit by cars. the city wants to create a lane for cars to park in between the road and bike lane. the parked cars would act as a buffer 14 feet from the curb. they're testing it out on ryan avenue. if it works the city could expand the model to other streets. families in one montgomery town will have to find somewhere else to celebrate independence day. the fireworks are cancelled this year. we have the fallout from pottsto pottstown. >> reporter: the main streets are decked out for the summer

holidays but come this july 4th it's going to be business as usual. this year the hail bails will be empty with no spectators. >> it's a big loss. >> reporter: ever since this man moved his sandwich shop to downtown he's been waiting on july 4th. >> people lose money. it brings everybody together and you can advertise the town. >> reporter: the kofers of one group have run dry. fundraising efforts have collected next to nothing forcing the cancellation of the event. >> that's bad. why did they do that. >> reporter: the news a surprise to some but not all. >> it's a lot of work and without having volunteers and social media, everybody saying we're blaming everybody but the reality is if you're not coming

we're going to have that again on sunday. in the meantime we do have a warming trend that is going to be coming in here. 75 so far today. 78 tomorrow. 88 on saturday and then 86 degrees on sunday. so temperatures go back above normal but we do expect some weekend thunderstorms. we're not talking about hours and hours worth of rain but here we go into saturday. saturday morning is dry. and then here comes a line of storms. not bad. that's not what we're so concerned about. it's this line with the pretty strong upper air system and look at that, that is 4:30 saturday afternoon with some thunderstorms right across parts of our area. but not at the shore where the delaware beach is. it looks like it's really dry at the beach all day and then they get the thunderstorms at night. there they go.

there's saturday evening and it's out of here. so it's only lasting for a certain period of time. however, there is a chance that some of those storms become severe and the highest risk does include part of the philadelphia area and northern and western suburbs and delaware, strong gusty winds possible with those thunderstorms. not so tomorrow. tomorrow is bright and sunny. a chilly start to the morning. allentown 45 and then we go into the upper 70s to near 80 degrees. 48 in galaway and in the 50s for much of delaware. what about the weekend? it's going to be warm just about everywhere every day except for the jersey shore on saturday

it's a sea breeze that's coming in but i'm holding off the rain until saturday night. i just added that right there because it's going to be dry saturday and sunday and just the storms on saturday night. look at the temperatures here. 88 in philadelphia on saturday and 86 on sunday. the storms come in early on saturday so the temperature doesn't get nearly as warm as it does in philadelphia and then we have partly cloudy skies on sunday but it's going to be very windy. i'll be back with the 10-day forecast in just a few minutes. president obama will pay a visit to the "tonight show" tonight. fallon asked the president about the candidates who could take his place in the white house including the presumptive gop nominee. >> do you think the republicans are happy with their choice? >> we are, but i don't know how

we have new video of a kitten found in a garbage bag in delaware county. a trash collector discovered the animal after tossing the bag in his truck on monday. the staff at the animal center where she's staying has named her grungetta. as you recall -- i didn't remember this -- is the girlfriend of oscar the grouch. oscar lives in a trash can.

>> of course. >> no animal in the world is a throwaway animal. there's no disposable animals. >> authorities are looking for whoever put the kitten in the bag. she's doing well but needs to gain weight before she is ready for adoption. every weekend nbc 10 news tries to help clear the shelters. tune in on 9:00 on saturday mornings that you can see adoptable animals. a woman in louisiana set up a surveillance camera because she noticed someone kept sneaking into her garage. it was a boy sprintsing into her garage to hug her dog before running off. she posted the video online because she wanted to find this mystery boy and she wanted to let him know it's okay to stay and play with her dog.

a neighborhood mom recognized the boy as her son josh. josh just lost his own dog. so now josh is allowed to visit the dog any time and he does as you can from these pictures. stealing some hugs. >> i bet the dog enjoyed that visit just as much as the boy and looked forward to it. >> they loved the hugs. so a local father had to rely on the post office to get his son's christmas gift to him but it never made. >> after months of calls he had no resolution so they called nbc 10 responds. see how harry was able to help finally complete their christmas. ditching the doctor, researchers say they know the real reason some men refuse the check ups and office visits. ♪ what are you doing? sara, i love you, and... in today's nbc 10 responds a father says the united states post office let him down twice. >> he reached out to nbc 10 responds. >> reporter: a burlington township father says he just wanted to give his son a special present. he says his troubles with the post office started last november. he tells us he asked his son a simple question. >> what would you like for christ moss. >> reporter: his son picked this lamp. he says he ordered it online and had it shipped through the united states post office to his son's home in fort worth, texas but it never got there. >> i felt bad that he couldn't get his christmas gift. >> reporter: he contacted the post office several times over five months. he says they promised to call him back but never did.

after waiting five months he decided to call nbc 10 responds. >> i was sitting here and watching the evening news and i saw about your investigation team and they said please let us know if you're having a problem, whatever the case is. >> reporter: after we reached out to the post office it got back to him with some answers. >> it was delivered to the right house number on the wrong street. >> reporter: plus the post office admitted it was all its fault. >> i finally received a letter of apology with a check for the amount of the item plus shipping and handling. >> reporter: he says he's glad he got us involved. >> if i never would have contacted you, i never would have received the check. >> reporter: now he's going to send the money to his son to buy a belated christmas gift and he wants us to have this message. >> thank you harry and nbc response. i got my money back.

questions so tune in for that tomorrow at 4:00. a woman is dead after being hit by a wind blown umbrella. this happened in virginia beach. the witnesses say the umbrella was anchored in the sand when wind carried it away yesterday and that umbrella struck a woman killing her. police are investigating but say there's no evidence anyone did anything wrong. wind gusts were about 25 miles an hour at the time. we were over the scare of at the philadelphia international airport today. hazmat crews were called in after a worker got sick over fumes. it's not clear where the fumes came from. philadelphia police want your help finding a man who tossed something through the window of the district attorney's window office. surveillance video shows the guy wiendsing up and shattering the

window with something he had in his phands. this happened around 2:00 so no one was inside but if you recognize the man call the philadelphia police. 21 states want delaware to return more than $150 million in uncashed money orders an they're suing to get it back. texas's attorney general announced the lawsuit today. it involves uncashed money orders from a texas based company. the other states argued that the money should go back to the state where it originated. twitter is denying a report that passwords were stolen. there were more than 30 million records including passwords. the website says the breach is malware that infected browsers but twitter says the systems

from our delaware bureau comes welcome news for people who enjoy fishing. the state is eating advisories on eating fish from seven waterways. the state says it's easing the advisories because fish are showing fewer signs of pollutants. the findings are one of the most significant improvements since it started testing 30 years ago. most anti-depressants do not work for children or teens and some may be unsafe.

that's according to new research. doctors studied 14 prescriptions and found only prozach seemed to be useful. fewer high school students are smoking but e-cigarette smoking has not dropped. 24% of high school students reporting using e-cigarettes during the most 30 days. a new certify view reveals why men avoid seeing the doctor. the top excuse is they're too busy for their annual check ups. the fear of hearing bad news and dread of uncomfortable exams were the top reasons. philadelphia is about to be in the global spotlight as tens of thousands of people flock to the area. >> tim is live in south filphil

humidity. it's not hot and humid as it can get this time of year. 70 degrees in lehigh valley. let's check out delaware and see if we can find any place up to 80 degrees. how about further to the south. it is 80 degrees and the warm spot is on bethenany beach. the beaches are as warm as the inland areas. it's not warm today, 75. a little bit warmer tomorrow and then we jump a bit on saturday. the humidity jumps as well. we have a lot of sunny and warm weather over the weekend just some brief weekend thunderstorms so let's not have it ruin anybody's weekend. we can plan around this.

as we go into saturday there's a brief shower possible at the lehigh valley but this is the main area that's coming down. 3:00 in the afternoon the computer models still don't have the rain toward philadelphia and nowhere near the shore. so the beaches should be okay but look at that. that is some pretty strong activity coming down between 4:00 and 7:00 and then it moves offshore quickly and then we're dry on sunday. there's the possibility of the risk that some thunderstorms could be severe with gusty winds and potentially hail. at the shore for example wildwood beautiful tomorrow. 79, saturday 72 with the nighttime thunderstorms and then sunday is warm and sunny. beautiful sunny day tomorrow but kind of cool.

the family can't wake up from. his baby boy will never celebrate his first birthday. his wife is accused of killing their infant son and her 3-year-old daughter. >> why did she hurt my dad like this? why? he couldn't even go in his room and go to sleep because of the memories, the crib, the baby stuff, he couldn't go in his own room to go to sleep to try to get peace of mind. >> reporter: peace of mind will be hard to come by. according to police the mother took the children to florida to visit a relative. investigators say it was yesterday in this house where they found the children lying next to each other in the master bed room. she held a sheet over their mouths until they were no longer breathing. >> we don't know how florida popped in her brain. when we found out we were like what were you doing in florida. you were supposed to come back
