a new national poll shows hillary clinton expanding her lead over donald trump to 13%. >> but as we know, this race will be won or lost in the battle ground states. according to quinnipiac polls just out this morning, trump is now leading in florida, 42%-41%. that's a big reversal. clinton was up big in that poll just a month ago. in pennsylvania it is 43%-41% and it is a tie in the battleground of ohio. we have a lot to get to this morning, including our interview with bernie sanders. but let's start with the republicans. nbc's hallie jackson is in cleveland where the republican convention gets under way in about five days. hallie, good morning. >> hi, matt, good morning. before that convention here begins, we should know who donald trump's vice presidential pick will be. top trump insiders telling nbc news trump will appear publicly with that person on friday with one source close to the campaign telling me right now, no decision has been made, and

until trump definitively settles on who he wants as his vp pick, that source says don't go printing the yard signs just yet. today with try-outs over -- >> how's your governor? >> reporter: -- decision time now for donald trump. >> i'm supporting donald trump because -- >> reporter: indiana governor mike pence, wrapping up his whirlwind vp audition. but even after a private meeting, a fund-raiser, a rally, f no clues from the candidate. >> i don't know whether he's going to be your governor or your vice president. who the hell knows. >> reporter: sources familiar with the process tell nbc news trump's talking over options with his inner circle. newt gingrich and chris christie also serious contenders, as trump promises his pick will probably be predictable. >> i'm not doing this for surprises. i'm doing this because i want -- >> reporter: he's looking for an attack dog that can take on hillary clinton, maybe even other critics, too, like ruth bader ginsburg. even for the outspoken supreme

court justice, an unusually candid political outpouring, calling trump a faker who says whatever comes into his head at the moment. trump firing back in a tweet saying, in part, "her mind is shot. resign!" and elsewhere predicting this supreme spat would energize his base. many of those supporters headed to cleveland where we're getting a clearer picture of who will take their turn on the convention stage. majority leader mitch mcconnell now revealing he will speak. along with trump's family, former rivals, and house speaker paul ryan, insisting now he doesn't regret endorsing the candidate. >> if i had not done that, i believe i would have contributed to basically cutting our party in half and thereby, by default, granting the presidency, giving the presidency to hillary clinton. >> reporter: meanwhile, trump is under fire this morning from the naacp after declining an invitation to speak at the organization's annual convention

of student debt, climate change -- >> so you were negotiating over these past 35 days to make sure she adhered to some of your core principles. >> well, it was a question of bringing the party together around the progressive agenda. what ended up happening is the democratic platform turns out now to be the most progressive platform the democratic party's ever had. i'm proud of that. we didn't get everything we wanted but it is a progressive platform. >> senator sanders, let's be blunt br about it. is this an enthusiastic endorsement of hillary clinton or is this your way of saying donald trump really ought not to be president. in your mind is this really the choice of the lesser of two evils? >> no. this is a choice about making sure that the middle class of this country which has been in decline for 40 years gets rebuilt. >> so it is sounding like you're firmly on hillary clinton's team. in your speech yesterday you said you intend to do everything you can to make sure she is the next president of the united states. what exactly does that mean? are you two going to campaign side by side? will you speak at the

convention? >> well, i suspect that i will speak at the convention, and i suspect that i will be running all over this country. look, i think the election of donald trump as president will be a disaster for this. country. this is a man who does not have the, in my view, temperament to be president of the united states. i don't think the people of this country want to see somebody proposing hundreds of billions of dollars in tax breaks for the richest .2% when you cut back on programs for working families. that is not what this country needs. >> senator, sorry to interrupt. last week the fbi director came out and said that hillary clinton was extremely careless with highly sensitive e-mail information, that in fact many of the explanations she's given about her e-mail practices turned out to be not true. did any of that from director comey give you pause before you endorsed her? and if not, why not? >> well, look. hillary clinton is not a perfect human being. bernie sanders is not a perfect human being. and you know, that's the way

life is. but i think what we have to focus on is not -- this is what i said yesterday in my remarks. it's not donald trump as a person, not hillary clinton as a person. it is the needs -- let me finish. it is the needs of the middle class and working families. which candidate is going to do more for ordinary americans? and i think that the answer to that is very, very clear. if you're talking about creating jobs and rebuilding our infrastructure, expanding health care, making college affordable for all people, i think that that is hillary clinton's agenda. if you want tax breaks for billionaires, if you want a candidate for president in 2016 who thinks that climate change is a hoax, despite what the entire scientific community is saying, well, i guess donald trump is your guy. if you want somebody who divides us up by insulting muslims or mexicans or women, donald trump is your guy. but i don't think most americans want that type of person to be president. >> during the last couple of days or weeks, senator, have you

had direct discussions with secretary clinton about who you would like to see her choose has a running mate? >> i have had discussions with secretary clinton but that subject did not come up. >> do you hope to serve in a clinton administration if she were elected? >> that issue has not yet come up. i am very, very happy, very proud to represent the state of vermont in the united states senate. >> who would be number one on your wish list for her to choose as a returning mate. >> she won the primary -- she won the nominating process. >> but can you have an opinion. >> this is what i think, and it doesn't surprise anybody. we need somebody who is not attached to wall street. we need somebody who has a history of standing up and fighting for working families, somebody who believes that health care should be a right of all people, and that we should make college education, public colleges and universities tuition-free. so i would like to see the most progressive person possible. >> senator bernie sanders, senator, we appreciate you spending time with us this morning. >> thank you. >> thank you very much.

moving to other news now, this morning investigators in louisiana are searching for more suspects in what they describe as a chilling plot to kill police officers. it comes as we learn more about the gunman behind the shooting rampage in dallas. president obama leading tuesday's emotional memorial to the five officers who were killed there. nbc's gabe gutierrez is covering the story again for us. gabe, good morning. >> savannah, good morning. as the city tries to heal, the president insistent that the country is no the as divided as it play seem. but today police in louisiana say there is a credible threat just days after the shooting death of alton sterling. this morning in baton rouge, authorities are franticly searching for a missing suspect in a chilling plot to kill kos. >> because we had credible threats against the lives of law enforcement in the city. >> reporter: police called to this pawn shop early saturday morning for a burglary in progress. >> y'all be advised that there are multiple weapons moved around in here. >> reporter: investigators say eight handguns were missing, one

17-year-old suspect caught trying to escape, telling police -- >> they were looking for bullets for these particular weapons to kill baton rouge police officers. >> reporter: four people are now in custody, including a 13-year-old. the worry -- one suspect remains at large and two guns are missing. >> look what happened in dallas. we can't take anything for granted any more. >> reporter: one of the weapons used in dallas by micah johnson, according to law enforcement sources, was an ak-74 similar to an ak-47 assault style rifle. >> i was shocked. >> reporter: former army sergeant gilbert fishbox says he was michael johnson's squad leader and helped train him in combat techniques before johnson deployed to afghanistan. >> he just didn't seem to be motivated or that enthused about it. he was a little clumsy. klutzy. goofy sometimes. >> reporter: but on thursday johnson used those techniques to maximize the bloodshed. corporal brian shaw and officer john abbott are the two el

centro college officers injured in the rampage. >> he shot what? seven, eight times. and i barely got grazed. i mean if god hadn't been watching over mere i wouldn't be here. >> reporter: at an emotional memorial, president obama and president bush honored the five fallen officers, the president bouncing praise for police officers with an blunt acknowledgement of racial bias in the criminal justice system. >> but even those who dislike the phrase black lives matter, surely we should be able to hear the pain of alton sterling's family and that we have to do what we can, but do better, to prevent another life like his from being lost. >> reporter: later today at the white house, president obama is expected to meet with law enforcement officials and civil rights activists. here in dallas, another somber day with funerals for three of the fallen officers. matt, savannah? >> gabe gutierrez, thank you. overseas, britain is getting new leadership today. prime minister david cameron

received, what people are going to take away from it. but it started. we screened it at the south by southwest film festival about a year-and-a-half ago. from that point on it's been an exciting ride. >> christian, we've known you for many years, but rami, this is like your real first break-out role. what has that been like for you to go through this? >> been pretty wild. >> yeah? >> yeah. i mean life changing, of course. to get on a show like this, like you said, we thought it might be a cult hit. but to be garnering the attention that it has and hit people the way it has has been huge. so yeah, certainly changed my life. >> no one will accuse this show of not taking on the big topics. you have cyber security. you have corporate greed. you have. mental illness. i mean is that what makes it interesting every week? >> there's definitely something in there for everyone. besides being like a ridiculously cool, fun, exciting slow to watch, there are deep

layers that affect people socially. we create this like global pandemic that removes people from financial debt and it's also entertaining to watch. >> it is a show obviously about technical issues and all these relevant subjects. but at the same time, it is about human beings. sam ishmael, the genius creator, was adamant about making sure that these characters were all extraordinarily flushed out and relatable. >> it is complicated in terms of the plot. but, it is interesting because one of the key threads is this relationship between mr. robot and elliott. we learned in season one there is a little more to it than suspected. am i giving anything away if i say the true nature of the relationship? >> you are, i guess, to people who haven't seen it. >> it's crazy. >> i don't want people lining up with torches and throwing things

at me. no, but fair to say -- >> but there is a depth to the relationship that is -- yeah. very fascinating. >> there is also some great chemistry going on. >> yeah. we enjoy each other. >> okay. you mentioned the cyber security angle of it. has it made you -- either of you think differently about what you do online when using your phones and all that stuff? >> yeah, right? >> i think so. it certainly raised our -- hey, look at her jumping in the background. but, yeah, it certainly raised our levels of awareness with the dangers that are out there with the internet. look, the internet is a phenomenal, amazing tool but it can also be a very powerful weapon. >> you changed your password from password to something else. >> constantly. >> we know your password is password. >> that's right. that's right. >> i change my e-mail like every two weeks now. >> wow! >> because i'm so worried about it. i just think i'm -- i assume that my life is hacked, right? and then go from there.

best according to that magazine. nice to see you. let's start at the beach. it's hot. you need some protection. you love an umbrella. how do you get the umbrella to stay still? >> this is critical. what's the scariest thing the a the beach? a flying umbrella. you into ed to anchor this and this is called the dig-it umbrella, half shovel, half stand. you loosen it up after you dig, then you can anchor it. according to "consumer reports," this was the hardest one to pull out of the ground. >> you've got to anchor it pretty far into the sand. >> gragain, you could weight it with a cooler. we'll get to that in a bit. but it can go with almost any umbrella. >> do we have a price? >> $40. >> non-alcoholic, by the way. tell me about the cooler. >> this is the 18-quart coleman cooler. this is great. this will keep your drinks cooled in 100 degree heat. one thing that's really nice -- hoda, kathie lee, i hope they're listening -- you can actually

"consumer reports" thankfully reviewed them all. this got a 98 out of 100 from "consumer reports." this is pure sun defense. you can get it for $6 at walmart. spf 50, unscented, water resistant so great for kids and ideal for sensitive skin. >> all right. >> this is the big winner. a 100 out of 100. this is trader joe's spray. i'm a little bit lazy, i don't actually like to get in there with the lotion. spray this all over, oil-free. spf 50 and also a little bit of aloe. on this one, an 85. this is more of a face lotion so it is even for more sensitive skin. it absorbs quickly, no white residue, which is nice on the

face. >> let's take a look at some of these other items. bug spray. something everybody needs in the summer. >> everybody's particularly worried at a barbecue. right? this is a sort of natural. it got a 96 out of 100 from "consumer reports." it is effective for up to eight hours and it is deet free. deet is something a lot of people are very worried about. >> and this one? >> this is actually my favorite. this is the lemon eucalyptus insect repellant. this is a pump spray. it got 87 out of 100. it lasts maybe six, seven hours but it did get an excellent rating. >> tell me about the speakers. >> don't you like these? they're sort of throwback. >> they look like amplifiers from rock bands. >> these are from marshall. they have the cool leather guitar strap thing going. they have these nice analog dials. portable, bluetooth.

one of the loudest. >> "consumer reports" loved this. we've got two different grills to talk about. this is a very portable grill. >> are you more of a tailgater or more of a cook at home? >> more of a cook at home person. >> if you were actually a tailgater, this is what you want to look at. the weber 1000 portable grill. button push start, stainless steel burner. $170 is a pretty good price for a portable grill. best of all, it comes fully assembled out of the box. >> and this one back here comes with carson doing a little cooking. >> happy summer, everybody. >> who knew carson can cook? >> that's delicious. great grill. >> this is the next grill $270 from home depot. this is a relatively cheap mid size propane grill. this got the highest score from "consumer reports" among their mid size grill. it also features this nice side burner which i like over here. >> what do you like to do on the side burner? >> it is great for sauces. you could do chili over here.

on her blog, the tig. megan, nice to see you. welcome back. >> thank you. >> we're making something unusual here. people don't think of this. we are talking about salad on the grill. let's start with this. well, here's the ingredient panel. >> really simple. we're just talking about -- we'll do a nice grilled romaine salad with grilled shrimp. italian seasoning, red pepper flakes. toss a little bit of olive oil, some lemon, some salt. all of our seasonings here. >> how long in advance do you do this? >> you can do it an hour in advance. put it in the fridge and let it sort of marinate a little bit. infuse that flavor in there. really simple. >> before you actually cook the shrimp, what temperature do you like them to be at? >> if you keep it in the fridge, i would say let it rest a little bit. you don't ever want to put any cold protein on a hot surface. it will just make the meat tougher. >> little bit of room

temperature? >> yeah. let it come down just a little bit so it is not too cold. we'll pretend like the magic of tv. they've been marinating a bit. but then the lettuces. this is what i love. you can grill lettuce and it has the most amazing flavor. >> i've never heard of that. >> it holds up. you can grill radicchio, kale, whatever you want. half it length wise so it ends up still keeping that base on there. because ultimately you can end up holding it like a hand-held salad. you can take the creases out of the middle to create a bit of a boat to put our ingredients in. we'll put that there. >> very happy about grilling lettuce. >> exactly. do a little bit of olive oil, get them ready for the grill, a little bit of salt. and then we can take this with our shrimp over to the grill. >> we don't need tongs, i guess. >> just in case. >> let's do the shrimp boat. >> exactly. thank you.

so you're going to let those grill. shrimp cook up so quickly. maybe a minute or two each side. and at the same time on low heat you can have your lettuces, olive oil side down. put those on there. they're going to cook really quickly. but again because it is a sturdy lettuce it won't break down. you'll get a nice char mark. >> here's what it looks like. we'll put these together in a second. you like croutons. you've got some bread on grill. >> we'll let our bread grill up. we'll pound that down so it is almost more like breadcrumbs. >> do we have the finished products over here? >> we do. i think we're good. so from our toasted bread we're now going to of course use your mallet, get that a little bit smaller. i think it is nice to make homemade breadcrumbs. >> can we look at our tasters for a second? carson, you like anything you can eat with your hands. >> taco style. delicious. >> that's what i think is so

fun, too. it is great for kids as well. at a barbecue people have a hot dog or hamburger. people who don't want gluten, you can have a hand-held salad. we'll take some shrimp that's already been chopped a little bit. we can put some of that on there. >> you make sure you cut the tails off those. >> exactly. obviously they're peel and deveined. it makes this little boat shape so it is really easy to fill in. then we can give it a little squirt of lemon. we have two dressings, balsamic or caesar, whichever you prefer. then a little sprinkle of breadcrumbs. yep. >> not a lot, right? >> no. exactly. especially if you're going to hold it. you don't want it spilling everywhere but still get all that good flavor. and if you'd rather, just use a fork and knife, you can do that, too. >> these look really good. they look really good. >> and so easy! >> exactly. >> let's join the party. >> megan, thank you so much.
