but as history is made, hostility is building. dnc day two. nbc 10 has behind-the-scenes all access with our team of reporters, as philadelphia readies to what should be another extraordinary night. good evening, everyone. i'm jim rosenfield coming to you live from soufd philadelphia, looking at the podium right now where nominating speeches are under way here at the wells fargo center. second day of the democratic national convention, under way right now. here are the headlines we're following today. history, of course, will be made tonight, as we've said, when the roll call vote is complete. hillary clinton will be the first female presidential nominee from a major party in u.s. history. on the speaking front, the person to watch tonight is going to be her husband, former president, bill clinton. the only major speaker in the last house. nancy pelosi will precede president clinton. we want to bring in lauren mayk,
5:01 pm
with me live here at the wells fargo center on the floor. and the delegates fired up where you are, lauren. >> reporter: they certainly are, jim. we just heard a huge cheer for bernie sanders. we're going to hear cheers both for bernie sanders and hillary clinton, probably for the next hour or so. because this roll call vote is getting under way. they will go through each of the states, and each will get a chance to have their say. now, unity is something that those running this convention is -- they are really working hard toward right now. i got a chance to talk to both someone who is working for the clinton folks and trying to get a handle on that. and also a bernie sanders supporter. take a listen to how they are feeling today. >> ever since he's endorsed her, he's been having a consistent message for us. so nothing he said last night came as a surprise. he's been asking us to support what's best for our country.
5:02 pm
it was certainly a proud moment. >> we all have the same interests. making sure we address the issue of affordable housing, making sure we have universal health care. as you go along, we all want of us to be unified hillary clinton for president. >> reporter: a city councilman from philadelphia is also acting as a whip here on the convention floor. sort of trying to keep a handle on all of the delegates, and get everybody together to vote. things are going to get louder from time to time. but she's going to try to keep things together here. and that is not an easy job tonight. jim? >> hillary, bernie, hillary, bernie, just a few moments ago. you'll be in the thick of it. we'll check back with you. good luck to you. back here live inside the wells fargo center, temperature here
5:03 pm
is pretty good. they could crank the a/c a little more. but outside is another story. another dangerous day of heat. let's check in with meteorologist krystal klei. >> you're exactly right. inside is the place to be. we're still looking at the heat on the high side of things. take a look at your feels-like temperatures here. 94 is what it feels like outside philadelphia. we're looking at temperatures on the hot side. 91 allentown. coatesville at 90. dover 100. what it feels like outside. atlantic city 93 for you. and 90 in mount holly. these temperatures are going to drop a bit into the evening. and here's the good news. your temperatures are a little above the actual temperatures, but not nearly the extreme as yesterday. because less humidity. we're dealing with a little bit better forecast not just today, but into the days to come. and this evening actually looking like it should be fairly nice. your planner, philadelphia 89 by 8:00. we drop down to 81 by midnight.
5:04 pm
into the early morning hours, upper 60s in the lehigh valley. looking at a temperature of 85 delaware 8:00 p.m. along the shore a little lower as well, into the early-morning hours mid-70s. we'll talk more about if we break this heat wave by your work week, your weekend and the possibility of showers coming up. all right. krystal, thank you. back live at the wells fargo center here behind me. bernie sanders spoke to delegates from wisconsin this morning. the group cheered him as he took to the podium. he told the crowd to channel that support to hillary clinton. and when sanders spoke to california delegates, he was hit with boos when he mentioned electing hillary clinton. sanders, he had a quick comeback. >> it is easy to fool, but it's harder to look your kids in the face if you're living under a
5:05 pm
donald trump presidency. >> sanders called trump a demagogue who does not believe in the constitution of the united states. tim furlong is tracking sanders supporters a bit, the delegates all day long. live at city hall with the situation where you are. looks quiet behind you at this point. >> reporter: for the next few minutes at least. it's hard to figure out who's protesting what anymore. as you look up there, way in the distance, you see all the flashing siren lights, that is the coalition for real justice. they're getting ready to march down here to meet up with the black lives matter group. then they'll meet up, walk down to the wells fargo center. but the biggest organized one-time event happened over here in front of the municipal services building today. a protest, organized rally with sanders supporters who say their candidate might be out, but their progressive agenda is certainly going to live on.
5:06 pm
bernie sanders asked his supporters to support hillary clinton. many of these people aren't going to do it. they believe the dnc stole the nomination. >> she and the democratic party are out of touch with how desperate and angry people in this country are. >> reporter: these sanders supporters not happy with sarah silverman today. she spoke directly to them. >> to the bernie or bust people, you're being ridiculous. >> i do think it is ridiculous for sarah silverman to start calling bernie or bust, because she was previously saying the same things that his supporters have been saying. >> reporter: as this rally wound down, this march came down broad street to take its place. on a very hot day, the coalition for real justice walked to city hall from temple university. they, like so many others this week, making sure their voices are heard during the dnc.
5:07 pm
and as you come back live, you see a huge group of people, hundreds of people from the coalition for real justice, marching down broad street. they're going to meet with the black lives matter organization on the other side of city hall. we're told they will walk down to wells fargo center. they haven't made any arrests or citations today. they made a few yesterday. basically saying they put people in cuffs, walk them away for a few minutes, give them a ticket and bottle of water and send them on their way. that's what police are telling us at this point. so at this point, though, i will say this, it's not too crowded down here. it's going to get crowded. but if you're in a car, you don't want to be anywhere near this, because that big group here, they're going to start shutting down this street to let them walk through. not a good place to be in a car, jim. >> okay, tim, thanks. good advice. we're keeping a close eye on traffic as a result of changes in place because of the convention. first alert traffic reporter jessica boynton again with us this evening. how are things looking out there
5:08 pm
overall, jessica? >> overall we're seeing a little bit more of a delay in volume than we would see in those particular spots through the center city area and from broad street around city hall headed towards south philadelphia where the wells fargo center is. also we're seeing more delays on those security checkpoints. we have them on 95 northbound around the philadelphia international airport. between the nine-mile stretch between that point and the other checkpoint around 95, at girard avenue, lane restrictions because of the five-ton commercial vehicle restriction for that nine-mile stretch. that's why we're seeing some of the big delays there. this is what it looks like when you pass through one of these security checkpoints. if you're heading to the airport, you may have some problems. headed northbound, you can see the lane restrictions there. all traffic really crawling right now. down to one lane at one point. so we are seeing delays on 95, in both directions in or out of center city. the broad street line is providing extra service.
5:09 pm
jim? >> jessica, thanks so much for keeping an eye on things on the roads. appreciate it. the dnc's women's caucus today packed it room at the pennsylvania convention center. not just delegates, but everyday women there. they were inspired by leader nancy pelosi to donna brazille with the democratic party. the key issues, gun control, health care, and equal pay for women. as delegates get ready for how they will lobby their interests at the convention, they are also lobbying to inspire undecided voters to join team hillary. >> women are complex and we have economic issues, we have reproductive issues and we have family issues. she would be wonderful as our president. >> pelosi told women's democratic voters not to give up on stopping trump.
5:10 pm
tim kaine was in virginia this morning. he stopped at a diner in richmond and was greeted with hugs right there. kaine regularly meets friends at this diner every tuesday and joked with the media to tell them to put down the cameras and get something to eat. he's expected to introduce himself to the nation here at the dnc tomorrow night. donald trump, he was at the vfw convention in north carolina. trump and mike pence took to the stage in charlotte. the large applause there, trump praising veterans and accusing hillary clinton of trying to sweep the problems of the va under the rug. trump announced a plan to fix the varks, which included a provision to have a hotline directly to the white house. we have much more from the democratic national convention coming up. our political punchout team joining us to discuss all of tonight's headlines. that's ahead at 5:15. but for now, we toss it back to denise nakano in the studios. >> jim, thank you.
5:11 pm
nbc 10 has extensive coverage of the dnc all week long. our live broadcast from the wells fargo center continues this afternoon and this evening. we'll also bring you a special at 7:00 p.m. get the free nbc 10 app for instant updates and behind the scenes footage of the democratic national convention. our other big story tonight is the weather. it's been another day of scorching heat. coming up, first alert meteorologist krystal klei will tell us when we can expect some relief. taking a toll. we head to the shore for a firsthand look at the effects the heat is having on the coast. why some people there aren't getting the relief they had expected. and going green, the birds are back on the field in south philadelphia. john clark has our eagles training camp field pass coming up on nbc 10 news at 5:00.
5:14 pm
5:15 pm
thanks for being here. roll call is going on right now. we expect this will go smoothly, mark? do you think they're going to behave, the sanders delegates? >> they are fired up. >> they are fired up. it is a great opportunity to show their enthusiasm. but i think they're going to behave. i think michelle obama last night set the tone for the rest of this convention. and you have to remember, it is a moving picture, not a snapshot. you can't just look at any particular state's roll call. they're moving from him to her. it happened in 2008. it will happen again. >> this is sort of part of the process. it gets noisy. people weigh in. they want their voices heard, right? >> that's right. no matter what window dressing the dnc and hillary clinton's camp put on this, it's going to go anything but smoothly. we've heard time and time again the bernie chants out here today. we saw it down in center city
5:16 pm
today. it's infectious around the city the support for bernie. people are mad. last night giving their tears when bernie sanders sold out to them to hillary clinton and her cronies at the dnc that have been here for some time now. and tim cakaine, a former dnc chairman. >> it's hard not to rally behind hillary clinton, unless you want donald trump -- >> it will happen, takes a little time. hard to let go. i think we're 80% of the way there. we're never going to get a hundred. >> tonight is bill clinton's big night, as we know. he speaks on behalf of his wife, the nominee. a lot of pressure on him. how do you see it tonight? >> this is an historic couple. we have the first woman nominee of a major party. and we have the first former president as the spouse of the
5:17 pm
nominee. not his first rodeo. he's been here before. he knows what his job is. his job is to be strong, but supportive. i expect more nancy reagan than ronald reagan. >> bill clinton is going to try to make this about bill clinton, support his wife, of course. but he's going to make his points. but there's no doubt, this is one person's convention. it isn't hillary's convention, this is bernie's convention. >> do you agree with that? >> couldn't agree less. if it is anybody's convention so far, it's michelle obama's. we haven't heard from the former president, sitting president, vice president. >> nobody's talking about her today. more to come, guys. >> i believe you just did. >> yeah. more to come. we'll check in with you guys through the evening. thanks so much for the political punchout. >> thanks for having me on. >> yeah. now, your nbc 10 first alert weather. we're beginning with a live
5:18 pm
look outside center city here in philadelphia. a beautiful shot. some of the high-level clouds outside. but otherwise, no showers in today's forecast. a little different from what we saw yesterday. instead, we've actually felt a bit of a drying effect. so now temperatures, not feeling like they're at 108. instead, we've been seeing temperatures in the 90s, feeling like mid to upper 90s outside. overall, much better day than yesterday. philadelphia 89. lehigh valley and in delaware. out by the shore, 90 for that temperature currently. these temperatures going to slip this evening. very nice evening ahead for us. then tomorrow, right back to the 90s. not yet breaking out of that heat wave. a little closer to your neighborhood. mount vernon 90 degrees. we're at 87 in coughlinville. across the board, these temperatures not bad as we move into your evening commute here. 89 in warrington.

looking at your radar and satellite, some scattered clouds out there. mixing in with the sunshine as we get ready for sunset. we do have some of the showers that are sitting off to the southwest of us. not really going to be affecting us today. and in the days to come it looks like for the most part we should hang on the dry side. but that may change as we move into your weekend. the focus is still the heat. in fact, the longest heat wave this year, what we are looking at, here's the seven-day heat wave. that temperature trend for us. we started off friday at 94 degrees. staying in those mid to upper 90s right on through yesterday where we had a feels-like temperature of 108 in philadelphia. today looks like a high of 92. and we are forecasting the same for your wednesday into thursday at 94. remember, the average 87 degrees. this is much warmer than is typical for us this time of year. it does mark the third heat wave just for this month. here's your neighborhood for tomorrow. 92 fair mount.
5:20 pm
we're looking mostly at the lower 90s through philadelphia, as well as the suburbs. berlin, 90 degrees with the scattered clouds and sun outside. lehigh valley as well. jumping over to parts of new jersey, robbinsville at 93 degrees. gallo galloway, 90. atlantic city at 87. it looks like, again, maybe a stray shower late in the day wednesday. if you're looking farther south, we're talking more in the delaware area, but mostly shower activity we'll reserve for late thursday into parts of your friday. let's check in on the weekend forecast. that's when we're talking more storm development. more moisture moving in, humidity potential. around 87 saturday, sunday in philadelphia. mid-80s for the suburbs as well. even through the lehigh valley. the shore even, mid-80s. relief in temperatures, but the possibility of thunderstorms by your weekend. denise? >> thank you. up next, royal regret.

protesters. i under there's one under wait right now where you are now, tim. >> reporter: we're actually in the middle of it. this is the coalition for real justice. a whole bunch of different groups walking around city hall. this group started up near the university. basically the chant they have been saying a lot is to this point is don't elect hillary, she kills black people. they changed the chant now. we'll try to keep you away from the profanity. i don't know if you can see, we're sort of in the middle back of the pack. and there's still at least a couple hundred people going that direction. up front here, i'd say, i don't know, guys, about 300 people here? basically, they're blocking off the area around city hall. it's very orderly. in fact, police are all along the sides of the route. everything's very peaceful. everybody seems to be getting along okay. it's really a peaceful protest. the message is getting across.
5:30 pm
but it is a lot of people. and they're all going down broad street, around city hall at the same time. try not to get into this area with your car, certainly. this is not where you want to be right now. hundreds of people, jim. we'll keep walking with the group. they'll meet up with the black lives matter organization on the other side of city hall, then they will continue on down to the wells fargo center. that is the plan. a long walk with these people here to talk about police brutality and terror in the neighborhoods and things like that, white silence is violence is what they're saying at this point. a police helicopter flies overhead. so far, peaceful demonstrations walking around center city. just a place you don't want to drive your car right now. >> meantime, here at the wells fargo center, big night here at the center. these people inside the arena from all over the country, of course. and businesses throughout our

area, they've been really anxious for their arrival. the dnc expected to bring in big bucks to the region. so today, one r we wanted to find out if our visitors are actually spending. deanna durante went to the tourism officials in montgomery county. >> reporter: they touted the fact they spent about a year trying to get the delegations here in montgomery county. more than 20 of them are staying here in the county at a number of hotels who say they are the clear winner here, because their rooms are booked. but zoos and parks and shopping destinations say they're making some money, too. >> we had a wonderful meal there. we shopped a couple of times. and it's been really fun being here. we've had a good time. >> reporter: the king of prussia mall was predicted to be a major hit with dnc visitors. >> i've been over to the mall. looked at it. beautiful mall. king of prussia is beautiful. >> reporter: the delegates finding time to do anything else in the area. >> i'm so immersed with the convention that i haven't had
5:32 pm
time to even look at what's out here. >> there are things i want to check out. i don't know if i'll have time. we drove all the way here. we kind of have to leave on friday. >> reporter: some of the schedules are packed too tight. some delegates came in before the convention. >> i was able to take in the historic park. >> reporter: the park is making out well despite the heat. trolley tours have been booked by families from puerto rico, south dakota and virginia. the double three hotel is hosting six delegations. it's sold out. many are staying through the weekend and shuttles have been running nonstop to the mall and local restaurants. inside the mall, typically it's slow. >> we're kind of just in general trying to attract as many people as we can. >> reporter: many of the hotels say the guests have been hanging out at pools, eating at restaurants, hotels staying open late. the eateries after the delegates

come back after the convention. some delegates say they'll skip the next two days of the convention because they're bernie sanders supporters. so that's when they'll doing a little shopping in the area. deanna durante, nbc 10 news. >> the pool behind you looks great right about now in this heat. big story is the heat. another day of dangerous temperatures out there. let's check in with first alert meteorologist krystal klei. >> jim, that's exactly right. being inside. the best option for everyone. still for a few more days, because we're still talking 90s in the forecast. in fact, we've cooled some of the high temperatures. but still squeaking in the 90 degrees. winds about 10 miles per hour. light breeze out there. most of the rest of our temperatures on the board, right at 89 degrees. just dropping below the 90-degree threshold, which is something that we'll have to wait late parts of the day for. friday is looking to be the day we finally drop off.
5:34 pm
you can see that at the bottom of the screen with the scrolling seven-day forecasts for your neighborhood. on top of that, mostly sunshine out there. winds around 10 miles per hour. and those temperatures will be staying in the 90s for the days to come. a look at your satellite and radar here. what we've got are some scattered clouds in place. not expecting rain today. very different scene from yesterday into the late afternoon and early evening hours. and for the next several days, that continues. but as we move forward into your weekend, that's when we start to see the possibility of showers. so here's your hour by hour through the rest of your tuesday. the clouds move through. but we keep the shoirs down to the south. wednesday we could see a stray shower moving by parts of delaware. maybe right along cape may. but otherwise, it does not look likely the storms on our wednesday. as we move into thursday and friday, we start to see a different story. more on that coming up in just a bit. >> krystal, thank you very much.

5:47 pm
he's so happy to be here playing for his hometown team. >> i think it drives me more being on my home team, and a team i want to be great and get a super bowl. i've got a little extra drive being a philly. >> reporter: you could see a lot of wendell this year not only running the ball, but catching it out of the backfield. coming up at 6:00, we'll hear a lot more on jim schwartz. i'm john clack for csn. we're just 16 days away from the eagles preseason opener against tampa bay. the game can be seen live on csn, and coverage starts at 6:30. kickoff is set for 7:00. now we put you over to the live look outside wilmington, delaware. you see blue skies. some of the clouds out there. good shot for us. and if we've got to still have the heat, at least it's paired with the lower humidity today.
5:48 pm
