>> the gauntlet has been thrown down. bob costas, michael phelps and company winning the 800 free relay. >> yet again. quick look at tonight's medal count. the united states continues to hold a commanding lead with 26 overall medals and they have pulled ahead in golds, as well, one more than china. the medal count brought to you by mcdonald's supporting athletes on their journey towards olympic gold. michael phelps' own personal medal count is 25, 21 gold, two silver, two bronze, historic tally highlighted by his remarkable run of eight golds in beijing in 2008. if you consider the full arc of phelps' olympic career his performance tonight in the 200 butterfly has to be way up there among the long list of victories because while there were a lot of personal reasons that drew phelps out of retirement,

and good evening. i'm jim rosenfield. we begin with that 6-year-old girl in had critical condition tonight after police believe she was hit by a stray bullet. she was standing outside her home in germantown when she was hit tonight. nbc 10's brandon hudson is joining us live outside st. christopher's hospital in north philadelphia. brandon, how is she doing right now? >> jim, i just spoke to her mom within the last hour. she told me her 16-year-old niece has broken ribs and a collapsed lung. all of this because someone fired 21 gunshots on her street while she was playing outside hitting this young girl twice. an intersection littered with bullets in the germantown section of philadelphia. police discovered at least 21 of them in the street, in two cars and inside a 6-year-old girl. we believe, due to the fact that she was just 6 years old, that

she was struck by a stray bullet. >> philadelphia chief inspector scott small says the little girl was playing in front of her had house when she was hit. our nbc 10 camera was kept at a distance in her home in the 6400 block of north wood stock street. investigators searched the intersection and block for clues and possibly a hoefb. what we know is a gunman or gunman fired two different guns down wood stock street around 7:00 tonight. >> they found a 6-year-old female laying on the sidewalk. she was unresponsive. the bullet went under her left arm, her left armpit area, which is a very bad spot to be hit by gunfire. >> philadelphia police are looking at surveillance cameras at homes and businesses that are nearby. they're also looking at those realtime crime cameras in had that area, as well. live in st. christopher's hospital, brandon hudson, nbc 10 news.

ask, of course, michael phelps had in his quest for his 20th olympic gold medal. and you might think that payback was on the mind of michael phelps. this is why. we'll explain. he was looking to avenge his loss to chad le clos in the 200 meter butterfly. phelps made the final turn in the lead but needed every inch of his 6'4" frame to beat everyone for the gold. he won by .04 of a second. le clos finished fourth. phelps night was not open. he anchored the relay team. the u.s. team won beating out great britain by . 3 seconds. another race, another gold for katie ledecky. she's back in the water wednesday in the 4x200 meter rely.

on the mat, how good was this? simone biles and the u.s. women's gymnastics team took home gold tonight. it was the second consecutive olympic team win for the u.s. women. they finished a full eight points clear of the silver medalist, russia. it was the first gold medal for middlesex county native lori hernanes. and among the millions of viewers watching team usa gymnastics take home the gold were likely a lot of little girls thinking maybe they could follow in the footsteps of the fierce five members. we visit the delaware county gym thinking they may have a lot of new visitors in the coming weeks. >> as simone biles sticks the landing, helping team usa score gymnastics gold, a much smaller team of future olympians are busy learning the basics that jk

new surveillance video shows two cars that appear to be street racing before a 3-year-old girl was killed. one of those cars hit the car esther was riding in.. we spoke to one man who considered her had to be like a niece. >> i used to love to see that little girl smile. she was so precious and so beautiful. she was just a bundle of joy. >> police released this picture of a car they're looking for in that crash investigation. and now to a deadly accident at a gun range in philadelphia. police say a man was trying to clear his jammeded gun at a

range on percy street and spring garden around 7:00 tonight. the thgun went off. he was shot in the chest and killed. for the u.s. women's field hockey team, the road to rio goes right through lancaster county with two-thirds of the team from pennsylvania or jersey. and just as important as where they're from is where they're headed. the road to on rio for much of the u.s. men's hockey team began in the philadelphia area. the team almost exclusively from p.a. excited to have almost the entire team representing the valley. i think there's ten of us from pennsylvania. us pennsylvania kids take pride in the fact that we're the biggest field hockey state. >> moving their training facility from san diego to lancaster means the opportunity

to be home. >> lancaster is the heart of hockey. that is where it is bread almost. california has its perks, but being close to home is something that we really love. we're all family oriented girls and having the support, it's the -- it's the small differences daily that make the biggest difference in the end. >> camaraderie built in with team bonding, the family affair sharing a spot on team usa with her sister. >> i've needed her most probably on those half days of training where i'm just like, i don't want to run any more and she's there picking me up. it's been an incredible experience. >> they're hoping this is their year. the results in london four years ago, this year was determined to turn it around. and so far, so good. they upset australia yesterday and they take on japan tomorrow. of course, we'll let you know

how they do. what's interesting with this field hockey team, there is something they love to indulge in. i won't tell you what it is just now.. we'll tell you that in a few days. >> okay. >> but after competition one love it, these field hockey players do, too. and you can find it in lancaster. i think you would like what they enjoy, too, jill. >> i'm thinking ice cream, but maybe i'm wrong. we'll have to wait and see. okay, jacqueline. thanks so much. see you later. now for a check on our weather. get ready for a hot and humid wednesday. it could feel like triple digits by thursday. sheena, the heat is on. >> yes, jim, the heat is on. it's going to get hotter. the humidity is going to go up. you will feel it. so we have a first alert out for dangerous heat heading our way. and you can see that with the seven day scrolling right at the bottom. for philadelphia, the pen peb suburbs of new jersey and delaware. you'll notice the days outlined in red and that shows you the

first alert days that we expect. so thursday to saturday, that's when the first alert is going to run through. we will be seeing a heat wave and feeling around 100 degrees. some areas feeling close to 110. and with that, we also expect poor iair quality. you want to avoid several hours outside, especially in the middle of the kay. stay hydrated, try to stay cool. it's going to be pretty dangerous heat coming up. by wednesday, tomorrow, highs in the low nirchbts. by thursday, mid 90s as well as friday and saturday, right around 97 degrees. but look at that feels like temperature when you factor in the humidity, possibly 102 on thursday, feeling like 104 friday. maybe even 107 as we go into saturday. we're also watching for possibly a little bit of rain relief. i don't think we'll see much tomorrow, even as we go into thursday or friday. the chances aren't going be very widespread. so here is a look at the radar right now.

satellite radar showing most of the activity off to our west. we have a chance of a couple of showers tomorrow through the area. 91 for the high in somers candidates et. lock port, 8el 3. harrington coming in around 91 tomorrow. future showing us we could see a chance of showers at 8:30 in the morning. it's not going to be an all-day thing. by 5:30 in the afternoon, may sme some showers in the lehigh valley and the poconos. rain will be there north and west of philadelphia most of the activity in the evening. very little rain relief from the heat, especially in the peak hours. by 9:30 thursday evening, we could see rain north and west. by friday, though, we could see, again, the shower activity mainly north and west of philadelphia. but it is going to be very hot, especially for the eagles game. thursday against the bucks at
