mayk looks at how trump is trying to make a splash in the push for pennsylvania. lauren? >> jim, trump campaign hasn't advertised on tv since the primary. but that is expected to change on friday. further taking this race into voters' homes. >> you can see there was blood coming out of her eyes -- >> reporter: ads like this one have already made an impression on voters here. >> i think the one hillary put out with trump where the little kids are watching tv, i think that was tremendously effective. >> reporter: now donald trump is preparing to run his own ads in pennsylvania. >> what you do with the political ads is you establish a presence and reinforce a message. >> reporter: matthew says whether ads are persuasive depends on their message. >> donald trump needs to figure out how he can craft a message that will appeal beyond his core supporters. and in pennsylvania, that means bringing in voters from the philadelphia suburbs. >> reporter: he said he expects to see some voters that have

made up their mind. >> after all of the horrific racist, homophobic, misogynist, you know, seen ohphobic things that that man has said, there's absolutely nothing he could ever do to have me vote for him as president of the united states. >> reporter: but there are undecideds. >> i just am curious, if each candidate goes with their rhetoric. >> reporter: kevin hogan welcomes the ads. >> i guess i'm the anyone but hillary camp. >> reporter: he wants to focus on clinton. >> i think donald trump needs to open up his pocketbook and put out some ads. because just having rallies all the time is not going to reach people. >> now, the professor i spoke with points out traditionally what you say in your campaign speeches and advertising reinforce each other. but trump isn't traditional. we'll be watching to see what message he sends in those tv ads and when he's back here campaigning in person. i'm lauren mayk, nbc 10 news.

>> bigger picture here, lauren, the democrats have clearly outspent republicans on tv ads so far. we've done the math for you right here. in pennsylvania alone, more than $6 million in pro-clinton ads have hit the airwaves. compare that with pro-trump ad spending at $764,000. new developments today out of rio in the robbery of u.s. olympic swimmers including ryan lochte. jacqueline london is joining us live from brazil. jacqueline, a judge actually tried to take away lochte's passport? >> reporter: yes, jim. we can tell you that what's happening in competition is really upstaging the saga of swimmer ryan lochte. today a brazilian judge ordered that police seize lochte and teammate jimmy feegan's passport while authorities investigate a robbery in rio sunday morning. lochte, feegan and two other swimmers say they were held at

gun point while on a taxi ride to the athletes village from a party. but investigators say the swimmers told conflicting stories to police. lochte described the incident in an exclusive interview with today's billy bush. >> these guys came out with a badge, a police badge. no lights, no nothing. just a police badge. they pulled us over. they pulled out their guns. they told the other swimmers to get down on the ground. they got down on the ground. >> reporter: lochte's father said his son returned home from rio yesterday, before the judge's order. a spokesman for the u.s. olympic committee said they will continue to cooperate with brazilian authorities. and an unfortunate update to a heartwarming story we showed you yesterday. the u.s. runner who fell during the prelims of the women's 5,000 meter tore a ligament in her knee and won't be able to run in the final friday. abby and new zealand's runner

we'll see you again in just a few. for now we want to turn to our weather. nice night to head out to the blue cross river race in penn's landing. there are olympic events to celebrate summerfest. we're also keeping an eye on the radar to our west. storms headed our way overnight. nbc 10 first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is tracking our heat wave and some rain on the way. glenn? >> yeah, jim, the heat wave continued today but not as oppressive. we do have a fair amount of rain in west virginia, virginia, even this area in maryland, headed to the east. we're going to have to contend with this during the night. this one is getting a little bit closer, moving just south of the mason/dixon line. a lot of lightning with it. the futurecast shows the blob of rain and thunderstorms approaches about 10:00 tonight. especially chester county, new castle county, berks county.

those will be the first place i affected. by 11:00 to midnight, we'll start seeing some of those heavy showers and storms and heavy rain coming in. there may be lingering showers even into the morning rush tomorrow. the heat wave did continue. today we got up to 91 degrees. but it only felt like 92 because of the lower humidity. that's quite an improvement since yesterday. we'll see even more comfortable air with the rest of the forecast in a little bit. >> all right, glenn. a perfect afternoon for a spectacular air show in atlantic city. today the thunder birds returned, and this year's event had an even more patriotic feel. nbc 10's jersey shore reporter ted greenberg joins urs live from a.c. tonight. ted? >> reporter: jim, organizers tell me attendance this year was better than last year's air show, providing a $22 million economic shot in the arm to the region.

thunder over atlantic city on a day filled with sunshine. thrills and beaches packed for miles. >> an air show like no other. >> i think it's great. low humidity. the weather's great. perfect day for organizers say there was a crowd of between 450,000 and 500,000 people, topping last year's, which took flight in september. >> for all the small businesses, we all flourish and thrive from the air show. >> reporter: absent from last year's show, the headlining air force thunderbirds returned to atlantic city this time. in fact, all five branches of the military were represented here today. >> it's really taken on a patriotic theme. i think it's always been there, but it's even more so this year. >> you feel like you're supporting your country. and this is very enjoyable day.

>> reporter: authorities tell me there were no arrests. but at least a dozen people had to be treated by ems crews for ailments related to spending too much time in the heat. live in atlantic city, i'm ted greenberg, nbc 10 news. >> got to stay hydrated. all right, ted. pennsylvania has a new attorney general this evening, bruce castor replaced kathleen kane who resigned after jurors convicted her of perjury and leaking grand jury documents. castor was sworn in today. the governor must now decide whether to nominate a replacement for kane or leave castor in office until the voters elect a new attorney general coming up in november. as for kane, she is scheduled to be sentenced in october. >> it's bittersweet. i loved my job. i'm proud of the work that we've done. at the same time, it's time for me to focus on other things, and it's time for pennsylvanians to continue to move forward. >> kane would not talk about her conviction or facing possible jail time. the d.a. hasn't said if he will seek a prison sentence for kane.

new at 6:00, a technology company that puts people in our area to work is laying off thousands of employees. cisco systems said it's cutting 5,500 jobs. that's 7% of its work force. cisco's website said it has locations in norristown and wilmington, but not sure how many jobs each facility could lose. today a final farewell for a longtime fire chief in camden county. hundreds of mourners and fire companies across the region paying their respects to audubon's former fire chief, paul price sr., who died last week from a medical condition. price became a firefighter in audubon 46 years ago, in high school. dedicated his entire career to saving others. he was 63 years old. tonight the cause of this apartment fire in south philly remains a mystery. nbc 10 was first on the scene

overnight as flames were shooting from the building. neighbors standing outside watching that building burn. a firefighter was hurt but he is expected to be okay. new at 6:00, philadelphia takes some time to honor its everyday heroes. nbc 10 was at the finley rec center where first responders were treated to lunch today as one of several events held throughout philadelphia as part of the city's inaugural first responder appreciation day. more than 120 restaurants provided food to thank firefighters, police officers, and emts for all the work they do. i'm kind of a jersey shore guy at heart. i think a lot of that attitude. >> meet the jersey shore triathlete going for gold. his story next from rio. also, the eagles have landed. we're in pittsburgh with the team before tomorrow night's game. glenn? i'm tracking storms that will move in during the overnight hours. and the heat's going to kind of stick around for a while longer. weather in your neighborhood, next.

back here live in rio de janeiro. tomorrow is race day for an olympian from our area. his name is joe malloy. he said living down at the shore has him perfectly prepared to go for gold. the legendary beaches of copacabana are 2,400 miles from the jersey shore. but joe feels right at home, a triathlete from wildwood prep. he said something about rio feels familiar. >> open, party scene, and a little bit of that reminds me of growing up on the shore. a lot of the crew was

complaining that the walkway was crowded. i said, this is just like every run i did on the boardwalk. i would get behind the tram car and that would clear my path. >> reporter: as joe sees it, there's only one thing rio is missing. >> there are no free samples they hand out along the walk. i did the fudge, as i ran down the boardwalk. i'm kind of a jersey shore guy at heart. i think a lot of that attitude and i think we all have a little bit of a chip on our shoulder, and i plan to race with that. >> reporter: joe comes from a family of lifeguards. and he says his experience with the wildwood crest beach patrol has really helped prepare him to be a triathlete. all right. let's talk about "olympic zone" tonight. and this sport that is going. we're talking about a combination between volleyball and soccer. and you play it on the beach. it is not an olympic sport, but

isolated shower, if you're going out to see chase utley against this evening. but some of these storms back to the west, they're farther back, they're moving in the general direction of delaware, and extreme south jersey, and may very well get there, let's say after 11:00 tonight. some people may be awakened by thunder overnight. there's the heat wave. it's still going on. 91 degrees today. but nothing like it was over the weekend when it felt like 110. today it felt like 92. that's almost a 20-degree improvement. from what we've seen. now let's see what we've seen at the shore. 93 degrees in ventnor, 91 in summers point, 91 in stone harbor. a bit of a land breeze today. feels-like temperature, some of the suburbs, they were all over 100 yesterday. and now we're seeing some west callon, only 84. birchenville, 83. mal vern, 96.

that's still way better than it was yesterday. we're seeing improvement. newtown 87. doylestown 87 degrees. what's going to happen over the next several hours? 8:00 we're still dry. but remember, that activity is moving eastward. this is a different computer model than what we showed you earlier. they're both agreeing that the bulk of the action comes into delaware, especially camden and sussex counties. midnight or so, it's moving into philadelphia, and into south jersey. still may hold together. and be fairly strong. and then we're left with clouds, and a few lingering showers for the morning rush tomorrow afternoon. well, if we get more sunshine, we could get up close to 90 again. it's going to be a close call about tomorrow. but it's not going to feel that hot. as you can see, somerton 89
