amen. >> 20 minutes of nonstop news continues with a toddler's family coming face to face with an accused killer in a south jersey courtroom. zachary is now being held on $1 million bail for the death of his girlfriend's 2-year-old son. prosecutors say he got into an argument with his girlfriend over a grocery shopping trip. >> the little boy was at the wrong place at the wrong time. nbc 10 south jersey reporter cydney has that story for us. >> reporter: his name is jamil basterville jr., he was just 2 1/2 years old. and dozens of his loved ones and relatives showed up in court today, having to hold back their tears and emotions as they learned that little jamil lost his life defending his mother. zachary stood with his head down as prosecutor christine shaw

detailed the final moments of 2-year-old jamil baskerville jr.'s life. the little boy cried after witnessing his mother get hurt. it happened saturday night inside their apartment. the mother was shoved by zachary, who was upset because she didn't buy food she liked. >> the defendant punched him in the chest. so hard that he went back against the wall and struck the back of his head. >> reporter: shaw went on to say zachary egged the toddler on to put his hands up to fight. he suffered a crushed liver. a medical examiner ruled it homicide by blunt force. >> he should be put to sleep because he killed my grandson. >> reporter: baskerville's family sickened by what they heard. they spoke out, saying they wish new jersey still utilized the death penalty. >> he shouldn't be sitting in no cell for the rest of his life, eating, getting phone calls and writing letters. he should be dead because my grandson is dead. >> reporter: little jamil's mother was at the courthouse

today but she could not bear to be in the courtroom during the arraignment hearing. zach wriary said he has a publi defender for offenses which include drug trafficking and hindering apprehension. he did not enter a plea. cydney long, nbc 10 news. breaking news. a u.s. official says the fbi is investigating a cyber attack targeting reporters from "the new york times." and it's looking into whether russian intelligence agencies are responsible. the newspaper's network was not compromised. the news comes as federal authorities investigate a breach of a democratic national committee. outside cybersecurity experts have attributed that breach to russian intelligence agencies. to louisiana now, where president obama got a firsthand look at the destruction left behind by historic flooding. the president surveyed areas left reeling by floodwaters while meeting with officials and

going to be another cool one with temperatures dropping into the 50s by tomorrow morning. similar numbers to what we saw this morning. lehigh valley, 58 degrees. clear skies all night. and temperatures will be going up a little bit more tomorrow. but the humidity is still going to stay nice and low. it's not going to stay that way. i'll tell you when the heat returns coming up. >> thanks, glenn. as college students head back to class, senator bob casey is calling on the universities to step up the reporting of campus crimes. deanna durante is live on the campus of temple university in north philadelphia. and deanna, you spoke with both students and their parents about concerns of campus safety. >> reporter: yes, school is getting back into session. some students are starting to move in here. and the senator is the sponsor of a new law that went into effect last year. now, school officials say the challenge for them is keeping up with technology, as well as providing the resources that that law asks for.

offenser jerry sandusky. conflicting statements from a man who settled the child sex abuse claim with penn state didn't testify at the kril. he gave his opinion during the 2012 trial. sandusky hopes the judge will dismiss charges or give him a new trial. the judge is expected to make a decision within a few weeks. sky force 10 over a mess at a montgomery county mall. this is the result of a water lane break. a water line broke around 6:30 this morning. water flowed across the parking lot at the mall. a stabbing in south jersey leaves a woman dead and her husband charged with murder. >> the attack happened last night inside a high-rise. sources identify the victim as jocelyn perez. her husband was charged with her death. they're both in their 30s, and

were separated. neighbors heard them arguing last night. one neighbor described the scene. >> the elevator actually stopped on the second floor, and she saw the maintenance cleaning up the blood, and, you know, she said she must have just missed it. >> mormon is at cooper university hospital. the couple's three children were inside the apartment at the time of the stabbing. they were not hurt. philadelphia police need your help tracking down a guy who tried to rob a cvs in society hill. this video released today shows him walking into the pharmacy on south 2nd street late tuesday night. now, he gives the clerk a note telling her to hand over the cash. but when a customer comes in, he gets nervous, he grabs the clerk's phone and then runs off. call philadelphia police if you recognize this man. a woman and a 17-year-old girl are recovering after jumping to escape a fire in philadelphia's peterbrook neighborhood. the two had to leap out a

second-floor window around 3:00 this morning. they're being treated for broken bones, but are expected to be okay. no word on what started the fire. friends, family and colleagues are remembering former philadelphia police commissioner john t timmeney today. he was laid to rest at st. patrick's cathedral in new york city. he passed away after a battle with lung cancer. among those in attendance was former philadelphia mayor and pennsylvania governor ed rendell. timmeney was 68 years old. the price of life-saving ep i pens has skyrocketed 400% in recent years. now congress wants to know why. today several lawmakers asked for a hearing with the company that manufactures epi pens. they've written to the company asking for information why prices have gone up so much.

epi pens are used to ward off potentially fatal allergic reactions. the cost is close to $400. grace meng asked for a hearing on the issue wrote thousands of america americans, saying they rely on epi pens. from our jersey shore bureau, state police say this duo teamed up to swipe a woman's purse in atlantic city. one removed her wallet from her bag while one distracted her. a hero's welcome in the early-morning hours for a local olympian. 100-meter silver medalist ali returned home after a successful summer games in rio.

suburbs, new jersey, lehigh valley and in the state of delaware. at the shore, we've got some places in the 70s. a bit of a sea breeze this afternoon as we told you yesterday. 70-degree ocean. ventnor, holgate, stay in the 70s. ocean city, avalon at 79. stone harbor 76. cape may point 78 degrees. while it's 84 degrees in mays landing. the temperature trend, it's going to start going up. so far we're in the low 80s. tomorrow 85. thursday 89. friday 94. with high humidity on top of that. so it's going to feel like it's closer to 100. nothing on the satellite radar close by. we see some clouds near st. louis. a couple of showers. not very impressive. as we go into the future during the day tomorrow, we just don't see anything. but we finally see a couple of

showers by thursday afternoon in central pennsylvania. they could possibly get up toward the lehigh valley and poconos later in the day. tomorrow, no showers anywhere. hardly any clouds anywhere. 66 in fairmont is the low temperature. but 60 in elwin and suburbs. another cool start. your own seven-day is right at the bottom of your screen. you can see that at any time, of course. 57 in robbinsville. warmer near the beaches. and even in delaware we have temperatures down near 60 degrees in the morning. the tropics, pretty active. we have gaston way out in the atlantic. this one may be named in the next day or two. and this is the one to watch out for. at least for a portion of the country. because the computer models are in pretty good agreement that it moves to the northwest, toward

the bahamas by friday. and then as we go towards saturday and sunday, there's a lot more disagreement. but it's still a potential threat to some part of the united states. some point early next week. or maybe even as early as sunday. over the next three days, we see the temperature go up. the humidity will really jump on friday. we're still not predicting any showers, you can see, in most places. except there's the one for the lehigh valley, for late thursday and thursday night. you saw that disturbance approaching on thursday. so that's the only place i have any showers in for the next several days. near 90 degrees in new jersey, delaware, up to 92. we'll get into an even deeper look at the next week a little later. >> glenn, thank you. great story now. he receives a new lease on life thanks to his doctors at the children's hospital in philly. >> a young boy is recalling his historic surgery one years ago.

find this hard to watch. it's important to remember no one was seriously hurt. you see people gathered around the counter. then the truck, you see it, entering the screen at the top, plows right through the front window. people inside the store tossed every which way. the glass display shattered to bits. police say the driver accidently hit the gas instead of the break. the worst injury was a fractured ankle. that's it. thankfully. a man's attempt to impress his girlfriend didn't go quite as planned. >> he ended up getting trapped trying to jump from one rooftop to another. it happened early this morning in pittsburgh. the man fell three stories into a narrow debris-filled space between two buildings. he was trapped there for about four hours. emergency crews had to cut through the walls of one building to reach the man. he's expected to be okay. he'll never do that again. almost back-to-school time.

here's a look at some of the stories making headlines on nbc 10 news at 4:00. mike pence is making a push for pennsylvania. you're looking live at worth and company, where pence is set to speak soon. it's a mechanical contractor in bucks county. earlier this afternoon, the indiana governor visited a manufacturer in king of prussia and got his hair cut in norristown. a man is charged with killing his wife. police say timothy mormon stabbed his wife to death in her apartment. the couple's three children were inside the apartment at the time of the attack. sources say the two were separated. mormon is at cooper medical center in critical condition. today pennsylvania senator bob casey met with campus safety directors from several local universities. representatives from u penn, lasalle met with casey at his

center city office today. they talked about sexual assault on campuses. threats of gun violence and the dangers of technology. turning now to the dangers on the road. >> we want to bring you up to speed on a study that shows you that traffic deaths are on the rise nationwide. the surge began two years ago, as the economy improved, gas prices dropped and travel increased. travel deaths were up 9% in the first half of this year, compared with the same time last year. more than 19,000 people killed. 18% increase from two years ago. one of the main culprits, people texting behind the wheel. really dangerous behaviors, people know it. 46 states have laws that ban texting behind the wheel, yet people are still doing it. >> at the current pace, the u.s. could reach 40,000 traffic deaths this year. the worst total in nine years. the national safety council is urging everyone to buckle up. they say 50% of all fatalities

positive thinking could reduce side effects in breast cancer patients taking hormone therapies. that's according to a new german study. scientists questioned a group of women about what they expected as they began taking tamoxifen or a similar medication. those with a more negative outlook had twice the number and severity of side effects than those who did not anticipate any problems. most new brothers breast-feed their babies, but few stick with it for an entire year. a new survey from centers for disease control and prevention revealed 81% of babies born in 2013 were breast-fed from birth. while just over half were being breast-fed at six months, and a third were still breast-feeding by their first birthday. many working mothers find it difficult to continue nursing. making football safer for children. a new study finds reducing the amount of time tackling drills
