roofing shingles and waterproofing products. you can see how close it is to other tanks and machinery. fortunately, the firefighters were able to keep it from spreading. it could have been a whole lot worse. if you were wondering in northern delaware where the smoke was coming from today, it was right along the delaware in northeast wilmington. tim furlong, nbc 10 news. to the other breaking story we've been following this afternoon now. >> new evidence in a hit-and-run that injured a philadelphia police officer right on main street this morning. nbc 10's randy gyllenhaal joins us live from near that scene in mant yok where the new video paints a picture of what happened. >> reporter: that surveillance camera was rolling at this pizza shop across the street. the philadelphia police sergeant you mentioned was thrown some 15 feet down this street after he was struck. police say he was standing right about here when a car speeding down main street hit him, and again the entire thing caught on

brand-new surveillance video. it's 1:00 in the morning and police have their flashing lights on conducting a simple traffic stop on main street. a police sergeant is standing out on the road speaking with another officer, when out of nowhere, police say a drunk driver plows into the sergeant, sideswiping him and tossing his body down the street. take a look one more time, with the camera zoomed in. the officer's hat and shoes go flying. he suffers a broken collarbone and head injuries, while police say that drunk driver hits the gas and tries to run away. this just in from philadelphia police. they have made an arrest. that alleged drunk driver identified as collin murphy, a 21-year-old, charged with aggravated assault, dui, criminal mischief and other offenses. coming up at 5:00, the incredible story about the good samaritan in the right place at the right time who helped philadelphia police make that arrest. next at 5:00.

84 in wilmington and mount holly, trenton, atlantic city. so all of the areas are a little bit cooler than, of course, they would be if these clouds weren't there. but that's all it is, just cloud cover. there's no rain. until you get way up to the north and west. that stuff's going to go to our north and miss us. we're not expecting any rain during the night tonight. but look how warm it is in the mornings, 6:00 a.m., 75 degrees in philadelphia. even in the suburbs, lehigh valley, it's going to be warm. that's a sign of a steamy air mass. and the start to ha very, very hot day. we'll see how long that lasts with the rest of the forecast coming up. >> we'll see you shortly. thanks for that, glenn. new details now about the 8-year-old girl who was shot in the head as gun violence erupted in her camden neighborhood last night. cydney long has been following the story today. she joins us live at what's been an active scene in camden.

first, cydney, tell us how the little girl is doing. >> reporter: we know the little girl's name and we're told she is still in extremely critical condition at cooper trauma center. her family by her side. this as police have literally been canvassing every nook and cranny of this neighborhood throughout the day today. with new information about a $5,000 reward in the case, and the search for multiple shooters. one neighbor said it sounded like the gunmen were inside her home. >> it was an 8-year-old baby. she didn't have a chance. >> reporter: she witnessed the horror outside her doorstep last night. and she can't erase the images. >> i seen the woman. i still see her. >> reporter: the 8-year-old, her granddaughter's friend and playmate were shot in the head. gabby was playing across the street from her own home. >> we have multiple shooters in this. she was not the intended target clearly.

we have it caught on video. >> reporter: scott thompson said it's video they're not ready to release of a suspect jumping into a car, driving south on 9th street. they combed an alley for clues today as officers handed out fliers asking residents to speak up. thompson said last night's shooting is gang related and now the fbi, new jersey attorney general and u.s. attorney are involved. >> we're going to put a laser-like focus on these individuals. we're using everything in our power to make sure they never walk the streets as free individuals again. >> i heard the screaming. keep pressure on it. >> reporter: she said the shootings here are an everyday noise. her twin sons are the same age as the victim. >> they don't want to come outside and play anymore after last night. their hearts are broken. >> my heart is hurt. i just hope y'all find who did it. >> reporter: camden has had 30

homicides so far this year. the chief said the time to ditch the no-snitch attitude is right now. they need a partner in this community to solve this crime. he called last night's crime cowardly. and incomprehensible. cydney long, nbc 10 news. >> thank you, cydney. new at 4:00, today a man learned the price he'll pay for raping and robbing a business's owner. in philadelphia's chinatown, a judge today sentenced brandon menley to 35 to 55 years in prison. menley was caught on surveillance video walking into an art studio on north ninth street back in october 2014. he then attacked and raped the studio's owner. and she opened for the day. he ended up taking $600 from the victim before leaving. we have new details about a woman killed while ziplining at a delaware state park. the operator of the zipline now says the woman disconnected herself from a safety system before falling to her death. she was standing on a platform about 35 feet in the air waiting

to get on a zipline when she fell. it happened yesterday at go ape tree top adventure in bear. police have identified the woman as 59-year-old tina werner of felton. her daughter posted a photo on facebook wednesday of her mother kissing her cheek. this is on her wedding day. she said ziplining was on her mother's bucket list. the company said the crew inspected the entire course and platform where she fell and found it was safe and nothing was broken. the course is currently closed now out of respect for the victim. developments in the septa slowdown. septa is making more changes as it works to get all of its trains back on the tracks. it is adding express blue service -- or express bus service, i should say, starting next month, more than a month after they pulled the third of their fleet to fix an equipment problem. the cars are expected to become more packed next month with

people back from vacation and students returning to school. so starting september 6th, there will be bus service along five regional rail lines. we are getting a new look at the devastation in italy as more aftershocks rattle the region hit by the deadly earthquake. this aerial footage shows the extent of the damage. new drone video also shows flattened homes on a hillside in one of the hardest hit towns in central italy. the death toll stands at 250, and counting. the 6.2 magnitude quake struck early wednesday morning. today an aftershock with a magnitude of 4.3 caused the collapse of more buildings damaged by the initial tremor. rescue crews and search dogs are searching around the clock to find survivors. but the aftershocks are making it even more difficult to look for signs of life. officials say they are still in the phase where they hope to find people alive. in fact, firefighters pulled a

10-year-old girl from the rubble just last night about 17 hours after the quake struck. back stateside, we're getting a bird's-eye view of the damage left behind by a tornado outbreak in indiana. this is from the town of kokomo, where one of the twisters touched down wednesday. crews from throughout indiana are headed there now to help restore power, and clean up a lot of that debris. indiana governor and republican vice presidential candidate mike pence toured the town of kokomo. at least 12 tornadoes touched down in indiana, and ohio wednesday. amazingly, no one was seriously hurt. take a look at one of those tornadoes tearing through ohio. at one point you could see it blast a mobile home to bits. no one was in there, though, thank goodness. thousands of homes were damaged or left without power. but no serious injuries here either. louisiana's governor says he will be asking congress for more

money to help people recover from the floods in the southern part of the state. he toured the baton rouge area today. meanwhile, louisiana native now living in delaware is organizing an effort to help people in her home state. michelle is filling a trailer in newark to take supplies down to louisiana. her family members lost their homes in baton rouge. a friend lent her the trailer, and she put the word out she's gathered things needed for flood victims in her home state. the donations of cleaning supplies, rubber gloves, money, food and water are pouring in from both friends and strangers. she begins the long drive to louisiana on sunday. >> i knew that i was part of a good network of good people. it's heartwarming to see the overwhelming response coming in. >> flooding killed at least 13 people in louisiana earlier this month. tens of thousands of others lost their homes. the water is gone in many of those parts, but the piles of

debris keep getting higher and higher. coming up at 5:00, nbc 10 is live in louisiana. we followed volunteers as they helped these communities clean up from the devastating floods. ryan lochte certainly wants to forget about what did, or didn't happen at the gas station in rio. but brazil's justice department apparently does not. nbc news has confirmed that the swimmer has been summoned to testify before brazil's justice department over his claim that he and three teammates were robbed at gun point earlier this month. brazil's civil police hope to get their case to state prosecutors by the end of the week, they will then send their findings to u.s. federal law enforcement who will then notify lochte. now to decision 2016. donald trump says he will outline his immigration and enforcement policy in the coming days. this after a town hall yesterday in which he seemed to be open to allowing undocumented immigrants to remain in the country.

today the republican presidential nominee was joined by dr. ben carson as he met with young african-american and hispanic conservatives from the new york area. they are members of a republican fellowship program. trump told reporters he will continue to emphasize his outreach to the black community, arguing that they have been taken for granted and let down by hillary clinton and democratic policies. >> they've been very disrespectful, as far as i'm concerned, to the african-american population of this country. and we are making it a very important part of our speeches, and of our thought process. and it's having a tremendous impact. >> at this meeting, trump did not repeat his charge that he made last night in mississippi, claiming that hillary clinton is a bigot who sees minorities only in terms of votes. a lot of klan members like donald trump, because a lot of what he believes, we believe it.

>> clinton released this new campaign ad today which suggests donald trump is an ally of white supremacists and ku klux klan. it also shows trump's refusal to denounce former kkk grand wizard david duke in a tv interview. clinton's running mate, senator tim kaine, will campaign in pennsylvania next week, in erie and lancaster on tuesday. kaine will also visit the lehigh valley on wednesday. but details of that visit have yet to be released. after a slew of recent criticism, the maker of the epi pen is lowering the cost of the device. it will expand programs that will lower epi pen costs by as much as half. but it's not budging on the price. the company has come under fire for the skyrocketing costs. they're used to ward off potentially fatal allergic reactions. a two-dose package cost under

$60 nine years ago, and it's now up to $600. the ceo said she's as frustrated as everyone else. >> this isn't an epi issue, or a company issue, this is a health care issue. pharmaceuticals, the irony is that the system incentivizes higher prices. >> patients will now also be able to order epi pens directly from the company to help lower costs. the ceo is the daughter of u.s. senator joe manching. he released a statement today saying in part, quote, i am aware of the questions my colleagues and many parents are asking, and frankly, i share their concerns about the skyrocketing prices of prescription drugs. pennsylvania is clamping down on dr. shopping. that's when drug abusers go from doctor to doctor for prescription painkillers. starting today doctors can check the prescription history of firsttime patients. the online database tells health care providers if someone is

getting opioid painkillers from more than one doctor. it's an effort to reduce the abuse. today in philadelphia, pennsylvania dpomp nor tom wolf said too many people in the state have died from drug overdoses. >> 2014, 2,500 people died in pennsylvania of drug overdose. that's how many people we know died. last year, it was worse. i think 3,500. that's almost ten every day. >> critics of the database fear that it could lead to an uptick in illegal heroin use. from our south jersey bureau, camden officials tell us they're close to reaching their goal of demolishing nearly 600 blighted buildings. officials at the final phase of the project. 60 more abandoned in unsafe houses throughout camden will come down. the mayor called the demolition project the largest of its kind in the state of new jersey. >> it is my hope that with these units gone, our residents and our children can fully enjoy

lot higher humidity. so it's really going to feel a lot more uncomfortable tomorrow. feeling like 100. over the weekend, humidity is down a little bit, the temperature's down a little bit, but it's still kind of hot. and this is going to continue into next week. so by the time we end the month, it's going to be the hottest august ever recorded. in philadelphia. by a good bit. almost a full degree. to beat a record by even a tenth of a degree is significant. more clouds coming through. the lehigh valley is the area we were talking about for any kind of shower chance today. they're going to go straight to the east. they won't bother us tonight. the clouds, watch them go away and set us up for a lot of sunshine tomorrow. that's going to allow the temperature to go up. obviously you can see those temperatures for your area at the bottom of your screen here for the next seven days. and there will be a lot of those

this letter out of the blue. >> they had extended the warranty to 120,000 miles because they realized between 2011 and 2014, their vehicles were having crank shaft and bearing issues. >> reporter: but there was a catch. the dealership service manager said kia corporate needed two years worth of oil change receipts proving chapman properly maintained the car before it could make repairs under the extended warranty. chapman did not have the receipts. without them, the dealership told chapman he would be responsible for $5,130 for repairs. chapman says he started doing what he could to come up with the money. >> i started working a lot of doubles at my job. >> reporter: he tells us after working 30 days of double shifts, he decided to contact "nbc 10 responds." >> i have been seeing your program on tv, and i thought maybe you can help me resolve this issue. >> reporter: we reached out to

we've had a lot of clouds this afternoon. but looking west from the aquarium in camden, we can see brightening of the skies. the clouds are thinning out and we'll be seeing some sunshine before too long. the clouds kept the temperature down a little bit, even in delaware. 84 in newark. 82 in greenville. 82 in wilmington. 84 in odessa. 83 in middletown. as we head toward southern delaware and the beaches, 85 in millsboro, 86 in georgetown, and 84 at dewey beach. pretty warm there. clouds are coming through, but it's drier back to the west. that drier air is going to come in tomorrow. those showers going well north of the area, not going to bother us. it's going to be hot, and mainly dry for the rest of the month. take a look at these numbers. friday, 90. but as we go through the rest of

the month, we're pretty close to 90 degrees. and this sets us up for finishing the hottest august ever recorded in philadelphia. and here are the rain chances as we go into at least tuesday of next week. philadelphia, not much of a chance until tuesday. same thing with dover. atlantic city doesn't have much of a chance even through tuesday. so it's a terribly dry pattern, along with the hot weather. tonight we're seeing the temperature not really going down very much. the humidity is really going to be a factor as we go through the night. by tomorrow morning, it's still 72 in allentown. 75 in philadelphia and wilmington and atlantic city. and trenton. those are really warm temperatures for that time of the morning at that time of year. an indication of how humid it is. by noontime, we're pushing 90 degrees in philadelphia. and by afternoon, we're well into the 90s. maybe even mid-90s in philadelphia. now, in the tropics, there's one

storm way out. this is the one that we've been watching. and you can see all the thunderstorms right there. that's over land. and they diminished. but on this visible picture, you can see the circulation right there. so there is a low pressure center. once you get the thunderstorms around it, it has a chance to develop. but it's more likely to develop, all the possible tracks here. the general direction is south florida, and into the gulf of mexico. that's where it has the best chance of being -- of going into a tropical storm or hurricane status. over the next five days, look at the sunshine through sunday. next chance of thunderstorms tuesday. and at the jersey shore, we're talking about 90 degrees tomorrow, and then more comfortable over the weekend with that nice sea breeze. when life hits a snag, sometimes you need a little bit of help to get back on track. >> that's the story playing out

take a closer look. his hat and shoes go flying into the air. and police said his body was propelled 15 feet down the road. employees at the late night pizza shop heard the collision, then saw the sergeant lying in the middle of the intersection. >> when they came out, they seen the police officer on the ground screaming. >> reporter: the impact so powerful, his shoes went flying. he suffered a broken collarbone, and head injuries. police said that drunk driver then hit the gas and might have gotten away if it weren't for a good samaritan, a local tow truck driver, saw the hit-and-run happen, followed the suspect and helped the police make the arrest. 21-year-old collin murphy now charged with aggravated assault and dui. >> he did appear to be under the influence of alcohol. so he was taken into custody. >> watched what happened. >> reporter: here on maintr
