i'm denise nakano. this all happened on roosevelt street in trenton. tim furlong spoke to witnesses who claimed the officer had been drinking and did not identify himself. >> he's our best friend. i met him in this country. >> reporter: james and many others in trenton's liberian community mourning the loss of alfred toe killed last night, shot by an off-duty city cop who a number of witnesses say had been partying with the group all afternoon. >> he was drinking. nobody knows he's an officer. >> not only when a white cop shoot a black guy then everybody's eyeballs should be all over the place. this is like a black on black thing. >> reporter: eyewitnesses tell me after a funeral there was a repast celebration of that person's life. alfred got in a dispute. his brother was shot in the hand wrestling the gun away from him. the officer grabbed that gun and his own service weapon and held

con stan teen to the ground. he grabbed one of the guns. the officer shot him. >> then pow, everybody drop. >> i cannot tell this man is a regular police officer when you don't have your badge on you. how can i tell? >> reporter: while it could be the police officer was trying to end a volatile situation. witnesses say he didn't identify himself as an officer and they wonder if he should have been carrying his weapon at a party he was attending. >> did you make it known to him that you're a peace officer in the city of trenton, new jersey? you did not make it known to him. >> reporter: the police are not naming the officer. alfred toe's friends want to know if the shooting was justified. they want to know if the officer was legally drunk at the time it all went down. tim furlong, nbc 10 news. we're following breaking news at a philadelphia port richmond neighborhood. that's where three people have been taken to the hospital after a krar crash near cumberland and richmond streets.

randy gyllenhaal is live at the scene. some children were among those hurt? >> reporter: two children were hurt plus one other person. police tell us they're investigating this as a possible case of street racing. it happened in this industrial strip just off i-95 in port richmond. you can see that green vehicle which crashed into a stone wall there. it appears it was coming down this back industrial strip. police tell us a 20-year-old male was rushed to the hospital where some serious injuries. also a 15-year-old and an 11-year-old were also taken to the hospital. we just talked with the man who owns this green minivan over here, rather, it was parked here. he said the car crashed into it and then into the wall. again at this point police say three people hospitalized and they are investigating this as a possible case of street racing. much more as we get it from philly police. for now live in port richmond, randy gyllenhaal, nbc 10 news. the reward to find the person who killed an 8-year-old girl in camden now stands at

$50,000. gabby hill-carter was taken off life support friday. the little girl was playing across the street from her home on spruce street wednesday when several men started shooting at each other. she was caught in the crossfire. if you can help find her killer, call police. turning now to the weather. another hot day outside as we take a live look at boathouse row. what a good day to be out. the good news, it was not humid out there. let's go to sheena parveen who has the latest on the neighborhood forecast. we've hit our sixth heat wave. >> yes, so today we hit officially 90 in philadelphia so that does make heat wave number six. we've seen so many of these so far. temperatures still hot outside, but not brutally uncomfortable. our humidity is at a comfortable level. 88 allentown, 86 mt. holly. so here's what it has looked like over the past few days.

we hit 93 friday and saturday. today we hit 90. that makes heat wave number six. tomorrow we'll be around 90 as well as tuesday. now, as we go through tonight, it's still going to be comfortable. clear skies by 10:00 p.m. temperatures dropping in the mid to low 70s. tomorrow morning when i wake up outside, it will be comfortable. temperatures in the low to mid-70s. by 8:30 we won't be that bad with the humidity, but we'll stay hot through the afternoon. we'll take a look at the forecasts through the rest of the week. we have a cooldown coming by the end of the week. that's coming up. >> and now it's decision 2016. preparing for the presidential debates. nbc news has learned that donald trump hosted a debate press meeting at his somerset county, new jersey, home this afternoon. sources say former fox news chairman roger ailes and rudy giuliani were among those expected to attend. trump's democratic opponent hillary clinton held no public

events today, but her running mate is about to make a push for pennsylvania. tim kaine is set to campaign in erie and lancaster on tuesday. then on wednesday he'll het to bethlehem for an organize been event. just last week trump's running mate mike pence campaigned in our area. italian authorities are vowing to investigate whether negligence or fraud in a hearing to building codes played a role in the high death toll in last week's earthquake in italy. today rescue workers continue to clear debris and search for more casualties in the italian town of amatrice. heavy machinery was use to demolish a house in the town center. amatrice was the worst-hit town in wednesday's quake in central italy with 230 deaths. more than 290 people died in the quake. italian firefighters helped displaced survivors recover some

of their belongings from damaged homes. residents were not allowed to enter any unsafe houses. instead, they gave instructions to firefighters to retrieve specific items such as important documents and clothes. a camden county monsignor is headed to italy to witness history. next week mother teresa will become st. teresa. monique braxton sat down with him in collingswood before he leaves for rome. >> she was humble, holy and humorous. >> reporter: for monsignor michael mannion, she was a friend and mentor. her teachings still motivate him today. we spoke with monsignor mannion after his final mass before his pilgrimage to rome for the canonization ceremony of mother teresa. he recalls the miracles that paved the way for her sainthood.

of this week until we start to see that cooldown heading our way. so we are going to stay near 90 to start the week, so we will be staying hot tomorrow. here's a look at the high temperatures for monday. if you're in reading, temperatures will be around 89. pretty comfortable in the morning right around 70 degrees, areas through the lehigh valley, mid-60s. afternoon high 91, if you're in longport 86, dover at 89 degrees tomorrow afternoon. another hot one to start the weekend. humidity on the comfortable side. not too bad. we'll see cooler changes to end the week. big changes coming mostly on friday. our next rain chance, we'll stay dry monday, tuesday, wednesday. this is philadelphia and the jersey shore. if you're heading down to the shore for labor day weekend, it looks pretty good this week. temperatures mid to low 80s. but thursday everyone will have a chance for a thunderstorm. temperatures on friday, philadelphia 81 droes and sunny. that's the bigger cooldown if

you're along the shore right around the upper 70s. so we will be cooler. we were also talking about the tropics, tropical depression number 9 has formed with an active tropics even farther out in the atlantic that we don't have to worry about. but the one we're watching is in the florida straits. between the keys and cuba, that's the one we're watching, tropical depression number 9. what we expect it to do is travel in the gulf of mexico, then it will take a really hard right-hand turn that could put it from the florida panhandle down to ft. myers, not till thursday maybe only is the tropical storm at that point. don't expect it to impact our area. looks like it could be moving out into the atlantic after that. but, of course, this is still very far out in time. we'll keep tracking it for you to see if we can expect any more rain in our forecast. so take a look at that ten-day through your labor day weekend. that's coming up. coming up in sports, just like last year, the eagles are dominating in the preseason. the birds put together another convincing performance last
