we're watching breaking news in west philadelphia. fire crews battling that large church fire. we're live with an update on the damage. and a false alarm prompts panic at l.a.x. we'll look into how it still could be impacting travel nationwide. nbc 10 breaking news. >> right now at 11:00, breaking news. a fire at a local church reaches four alarms. this is a live look from sky force 10, where smoke could be

seen for miles. good morning. this fire broke out around 9:00 a.m. this morning and it quickly burned through the roof of the building. nbc 10's monique braxton is live there. i know you spoke with the minister of the church. what are you learning? >> reporter: that's right. in just a few moments, the deputy fire commissioner jesse williams is going to update us on their status of battling the blaze. let me get out of the way while i show you what's going on. as many as 150 firefighters are here on the scene at the good shepherd presbyterian church at lands down and 65th. we just learned that 47 pieces of apparatus are fighting the blaze from above, including the fire trucks, the ladder trucks that you see here in the distance. i see 41 and i also see 24. we did speak to minister reverend adams. he told us that two people were inside the church at the time. one on the third floor, one on

the second floor. when the lights went out. and they ran out. the minister also tells us this church is more than 100 years old. he says they just celebrated that commemoration. he told us that they rent the church to as many as five different congregations. when i asked him where they believe the fire began, he told me that it appears it started in the basement, but of course, the cause is unknown. i also just checked with the fire marshal. they have told us the cause is unknown as well. but we can tell you that the winds are shifting into our direction, which means that only can -- the fire fighting status at this point. so we're going to be joined in just a few seconds by deputy commissioner jesse williams. deputy commissioner, are you ready? okay. we're live, so please share with us what you can. >> hi, my name is jesse wilson, deputy fire commissioner. we just placed the fire under control at 11:02.

when they responded this morning, they started with a fairly aggressive interior attack that in short order transitioned to a defensive attack once we were unable to control it on the interior. the companies did make one rescue and did a tremendous job of doing that. the individual that we rescued is in good shape now and did not need medical attention. for more of the details on the actual firefight and the transition from the offensive attack to the defensive attack, i want to turn it over to the commander, robert cardin, who assumed command at about the second or third alarm. bob? >> good morning, everybody. companies did a great job. church fires are notoriously difficult to fight the fire. they have a lot of void bases and fire can travel. initially, fire companies were in service with two engines and two ladders with medium smoke. they were told that the fire was in the basement. they proceeded down to the basement and engaged the fire with water lines. while that was happening, they were able to go to the second

floor and find somebody who was not aware that the church was on fire and they were able to bring him out unharmed. as the firefight progressed to the basement, there wasn't really enough water power to be able to put the fire out. it was so the commander ordered them to evacuate. there was an orderly evacuation and we transitioned to what we call from offensive to defensive. at that point, we knew that everybody was out of the building, and our primary focus was to protect the houses behind the church. we were able to successfully do that. there are no injuries at this point. >> talk about the equipment that you all used. >> the equipment? >> yes. >> water lines. 33 apparatus and 120 personnel responded. i want to thank all of our partner agencies, too. typically, we can depend on the red cross. we can depend on red cross, lni, the water department, gas works to come out and help us. reach of them did that today.

i can't say enough about our partner agencies today. >> commissioner, can you tell us more about what you saw in the basement as far as the origins go? >> there was a heavy volume of fire. they went down there with hose lines and they were attacking it, but they weren't making any headway, which is an indication that we need to evacuate. once the rescue was made, they were able to withdraw. >> the specific area in the basement? >> yeah, the specifics of that are under investigation. >> is there a boiler in the basement, air-conditioning unit? >> that will all be under investigation. >> was anything going on activity-wise? i'm sorry, i'm joining this late. as far as any activity inside before the fire? >> it's under investigation. we're not aware of that yet. >> and we also understand that some cats were missing. how many cats have been located? how many cats are you still looking for? >> we don't have information. >> so there's a homeless shelter and a daycare that operates out of this church. were any of them there at this time? >> our information is that there was one person present at the time and we were able to get them out. >> thank you, both of you, we appreciate it. >> okay, thank you.

>> reporter: the four-alarm fire has been brought under control. we're going to get some more information and be back with you at 11:30. live for now from west philadelphia, monique braxton, nbc 10 news. >> thanks, monique. let's see how this fire is affecting traffic in the area. nbc 10 first alert traffic reporter jessica boyington has been keeping an eye on that. what are you seeing? >> i'll explain exactly where the fire is. it was a four-alarm fire. taking out a portion of landsdown avenue. haddington street is also closed for a portion around 65th street. additionally, there's some random side streets that are closed on and off and there's a lot of traffic and backup around the area, because all of this is being diverted around the scene. right now, you can see a little bit of a slowdown. this is landsdown avenue. a little bit of a slowdown.

you can take haverford avenue as your alternate, but be prepared to watch for those closures and more congestion throughout it. >> thanks, jessica. we'll continue to follow this story. right now, three teens are recovering after being shot in a shootout overnight. police tell us at least 12 bullets went flying on the corner of 27th and tasker. police were there for hours collecting evidence and trying to piece together what happened. philadelphia police say a 16 and a 17-year-old were both shot in the legs. another 16-year-old was shot in the back. all three are expected to be okay. a woman is facing charges after being accused of vandalizing cars outside the home of the philadelphia district attorney. delaware county officials are handling the case, so there's no potential for conflict of interest. last year, tires were slashed on two cars outside of seth williams' home. stacey cummings surrendered to police and is facing federal charges. new this morning, a

23-year-old man from lehigh county died this weekend after complications from heatstroke. john mccourty had been running a half marathon in montgomery county on august 21st when he collapsed. he was taking to lehigh valley hospital where he died on friday. a memorial service is being held thursday at pembridge high school. panic at l.a.x. last night, all from a false alarm. >> reporter: during the panic here and chaos, thousands of passengers flooded into the streets and on to the tarmac at l.a.x. looking for any way out of the terminal they could find. a loud noise mistaken for shots fired inside at least three terminals, triggering a wild, mass evacuation at the nation's second largest airport, just before 9:00 p.m. >> why are we running? >> security said to run. >> reporter: there was confusion on the ground and uncertainty in

the air. >> ground, this is united 488. apparently there's an active shooting in the neterminal. can you please advise us what's happening? >> the airport shut down for more than an hour. gridlock on the road and in the sky. >> you're not going to be able to get into terminal 8 because there's a situation going on. >> reporter: our own lester holt was there. arriving at l.a.x. during the incident. reporting live on facebook. >> we're about to walk up the stairs. when the door opened, people began flooding out. passengers, security people. i heard shots fired or active shooter, run 678 people didn't really know what to do. >> reporter: lester spoke to witnesses inside the terminal. >> what did you hear? >> i heard shots. >> we just saw people start to run and we started to run also. >> reporter: adding to the chaos, police, guns drawn approach this man dressed as zorro. no clear connection. he was later released. the frightening lockdown at l.a.x. comes two weeks after a

similar scare at jfk. police sweeping that airport after a similar report. this morning back at l.a.x., the all clear, but only after this terrifying scene. >> that was miguel almaguer reporting. police say the reports of shots fired, that was simply a loud noise. all of this comes three years after a gunman shot and killed a tsa agent there. two men are on the run after robbing a cell phone store in lawn crest last tuesday. police say one man went into the metro pcs store on adams avenue, while the other stood watch outside. the one who went inside demanded money. then the two ran off. if you think you recognize these two, you're asked to call police. from our south jersey bureau, as many as 20,000 dead fish have washed up in little egg harbor. officials say it is the second largest fish kill in less than a week. officials believe the fish died because of low concentration of

dissolved oxygen in the water. last week, more than a million dead fish appeared in creeks and waterways in monmouth county. we're continuing to monitor break news out of the overbrook section of philadelphia this morning. flames devoured a church there more than 100 years old. we'll have an update just ahead. plus, a dramatic rescue on the train tracks. this morning, we're hearing from the heroic officer who had to think and act fast. and right now, sitting in the mid 80s in philadelphia, but we'll be heading become to those 90s later today. we'll talk about heat wave number six, coming up.

we continue to follow breaking news. a church on landsdown avenue has been on fire this morning for several hours. that fire is now under control. it started around 9:00 this morning, was burning for about two hours. these are pictures from about an hour ago from sky force 10. they blew the front door right off. at least 150 firefighters were called to this fire. the philadelphia fire department told us they had to make one rescue, but that person is okay. nbc 10's monique braxton is near the church gathering more information, and she'll have an update in about 15 minutes. a new jersey transit officer is being hailed a hero for a dramatic rescue. victor ortiz made a split second

decision that saved a life. but as nbc's tamron hall reports, he says it is his job to protect and serve. >> reporter: an act of heroism just in the nick of time. victor ortiz putting his life on the line, saving a man laying on the tracks seconds between life and death. >> i was bracing for the worst. you know, but hoping for the best. >> reporter: blracing for an oncoming train, its headlights approaching fast. >> in my mind, i'm thinking, this is not going to happen. i'm going to do my best to pull this guy through. >> reporter: it was a struggle. the man, significantly larger than him, wasn't cooperating. but ortiz found the strength to pull him off the tracks with no more than two seconds to spare. >> that last pull, had it not worked, we already know what would have happened. >> reporter: this morning, people are calling ortiz a hero, but he hopes others would do the same. >> had i just stood there and done nothing, again, i wouldn't be able to bear that thought in

my mind. >> reporter: a humble and proud cop, ortiz says the man later apologized and thanked him. >> he goes, i didn't mean to do what i did, and i told him at that moment, i said that's my job. my job is to, you know, protect and serve. >> tamron hall reporting. the man's identity and his condition have not been released. right now, officer ortiz is on a well-deserved and pre-planned vacation. two united airlines pilots from north jersey are accused of attempting to fly drunk. the men were arrested by scottish police on saturday. both were in a scottish courtroom this morning. the veteran pilots, one 35 and one 45, were taken into custody at glasgow airport minutes before their flight was scheduled to leave for newark with 150 people onboard. >> these people have a huge responsibility. they have so many lives that they have to be responsible for. >> flight 162 finally took off with a new crew nearly ten hours later, though. faa rules prohibit pilots from

drinking alcohol within eight hours of a flight, but most airlines have a 12-hour rule. the faa also conducts random spot checks of pilots. united has fired the pilots. decision 2016. donald trump will visit detroit on saturday to reach out to african-american voters. the republican presidential nominee plans to speak at a predominantly black church in the heart of that city. democrats and others have criticized trump for asking for african-american votes in front of mostly white audiences. this week we'll find out donald trump's plans on immigration. last night, he tweeted that he'll speak about it on wednesday in arizona. on "meet the press" yesterday the head of the republican national committee outlined what he thinks trump will say. >> you're not going to have a pathway to citizenship with donald trump. that's off the table. there is no method by which

90s yet again, making it yet the sixth heat wave of our summer. very hot august that we've seen. and we're heading to those 90s again today. in philadelphia right now, we're at 85 degrees. everywhere seeing 80s. low 80s for parts of the pennsylvania suburbs and 83 in delaware. now on the shore at 80 and south jersey at 83. mostly sunshine, a few of those clouds out there hanging overhead throughout your afternoon. but otherwise, not expecting a lot of activity in today's forecast in terms of rain. we'll get to that in a second. here's your neighborhood temperatures. brewtown in the mid 80s. andorra at 85. if we shift along, fox chase at 85 degrees. so very consistent across the board here in the mid 80s as we head into your lunch hour. heat wave number six, though. that's what we've been talking about. it started the tail end of last week. 95 friday. yesterday, we hit 90 degrees

we now know at least 120 firefighters are on the scene here at good shepherd presbyterian church. we've also learned more than 30 pieces of apparatus are being used to fight the blaze on the ground and from above, including the ladder trucks that you see. we grabbed reverend adams, the minister of the church. >> my brother was in the basement. when the lights went out, he knew something untoward had happened. so he went around looking for what had happened. jacqueline saw something, the fire, and called me and i was out here in five minutes. >> reporter: jacqueline lives on the first floor? >> she lives on the second floor of the rectory. >> reporter: and your brother lives on the third floor? >> yeah. >> reporter: and they were both inside? >> yeah. >> reporter: are they injured? >> no, everyone is fine. >> reporter: no one was injured when this structure ignited. the fire marshal is on the scene

police are looking for two men who robbed a cell phone store in lawn crest last tuesday. police say one went into the metro pcs store on adams avenue, while the other stood watch outside. if you think you recognize these men, you're asked to call police. the reward in the killing of an 8-year-old camden girl is up to $50,000. gaby hill carter was taken off life support friday. the little girl was playing across the street from her home wednesday when men started shooting at each other. she was caught in the crossfire. now to the latest in that shooting death of nakia aldridge, the cousin of nba star dwyane wade. she was gunned down as she pushed a baby stroller on chicago's south side. her tragic death is drawing attention to the city's ongoing problem with gun violence. as we learn the two men now charged in her murder had a long criminal history. nbc's kevin tibbles reports. >> reporter: a unanimously heartbroken. >> this is my baby girl.

>> reporter: as the city of chicago is once again caught in the cross hairs of senseless violence. 32-year-old nakia aldridge, a mother of four, shot and killed friday while pushing her 3-week-old baby girl in a stroller on the city's south side. >> this senseless killing needs to stop. what is it doing to us? >> reporter: two brothers charged with her murder on sunday are being held without bail. police say they were allegedly gunning for someone else. a man who was targeted simply because he came from a different neighborhood. >> these two offenders are the prime example of the challenge we face here in chicago with repeat gun offenders that don't care who they shoot, don't care whose life they take, and clearly, clearly don't fear the consequences of their angsts. >> nakia aldridge's first cousin, three-time nba champ and hometown hero dwyane wade, used

social media to speak out. my cousin was killed today in chicago, another act of senseless gun violence. four kids lost their mom for no reason. unreal. enough is enough. in an awful twist just a day before the shooting, the nba star addressed the plague of gun violence in chicago on espn. >> this is something that didn't start today. it's something that's not going to end tomorrow. it's something that we can start a conversation, we can start the work today. >> this was personal. it hit him. >> reporter: wade's mother jolinda wade is a local pastor. >> i just keep hearing unity. we need to unite. we need to bring all parties to the table. >> that was kevin tibbles reporting. according to the cook county sheriff's office, both brothers are due in court today. already this year, the "chicago tribune" has reported at least 464 homicides. now your nbc 10 first alert

weather. the heat continues on this monday. as we know, we are now in day four of our sixth heat wave. this is a live look at the museum of art in philadelphia. so, when will things cool down a bit? nbc 10 first alert meteorologist krystal is here. >> it is a while before we see the temperatures start to drop. we're already in upper 80s in some locations. philadelphia at 85 degrees. parts of pennsylvania suburbs 87 degrees right now. and 85 in new jersey. a little better off for the lehigh valley, at 83. and in delaware, mid 80s. you see these live cameras looking outside. plenty of sunshine out there again. in fact, just a few spotty clouds that we're noticing live over the lehigh valley. otherwise, it's just blue and sunny in the forecast. thing is, today, the humidity will tap up a bit compared to yesterday. meaning it will feel a little more humid and hotter in the

expensive fees for consumers. >> it can add 2% to 3% on top of every transaction that you make. >> reporter: that are also the most profitable for the credit card companies. but they're being dropped, and other charges like interest rates and late fees, are being reduced. because of competition in the credit card industry. >> a lot of times, when one of the big boys of the credit card industry makes a move to reduce a fee, if that works well for them, it's only a matter of time before one of the other competitors does the same thing. >> reporter: that's why he says now is the time to shop around for credit card deals that are good right now, but might even get better. new rules to track eyes in the sky are in effect today. the faa's new drone rules went into effect at midnight. some of the regulations include a weight limit, 55 pounds, and a

with josh huff making a play. so we don't take too much of that because we knew what happened last year. beckham with that big catch of the top. the eagles' offense had its most impressive showing of the off-season. and the defense has been really solid throughout the preseason. they've come with a lot of pressure. they've played very well taking the football away. i think everybody feels maybe a little bit better about this team than a couple weeks ago. it's the preseason. we learned last year that what happens in the preseason doesn't translate into the regular season. carson wentz had a ct scan on his ribs. the one rib is 100%. the second rib is only 60% healed. still not sure if he'll play thursday night. >> i want to ask you about some of these new fan initiatives that the team has going. one specifically for teachers. explain that to us. >> we want to finds out all of the middle school teachers out there. all of the high school teachers out there. the all-pros and the eagles are

are to talking about our tropical outlooks. we have been keeping our eye on this system. this is now what is being called tropical depression nine, and it looks like by thursday, this system may wrap around into tampa, bringing heavy rain, regardless of exactly where it hits. two parts of florida. the system more likely to affect us, this is tropical depression 8. so what we're looking at right now, just off the coast of the carolinas. what we're looking at is that this system wrapping around this direction over the next few days may be affecting our delaware and jersey shore beaches. so what we're looking at here is a possibility of some dangerous conditions. rip currents dangerously high. so that's something that you need to know about, especially if you're going out mid this week. tuesday, wednesday, but possibly even through to your labor day weekend. might be a dangerous situation and something that you need to check in with your local areas about. talking about your labor day. here's the outlook for philadelphia. saturday, 83 degrees. sunday at 85. and monday at 88.

so we will be warming. but the good news is, at this point, sunny to mostly sunny. so we are staying dry. if you've got plans outdoors, you'll be all right. then we're talking the shore. if you're getting that last shore day in before we head into fall, this is what we're expecting. 78 in avalon saturday. 81 sunday and still in the low 80s monday. we are tracking mostly sunny to sunny conditions throughout that three-day period. margate upper 70s to low 80s as well. that's really similar across the board. rehoboth beach at 78. 80 on sunday. and 81 by your monday. let's talk about the ten-day forecast now over the next ten days. we see a bit of up and down here. we're at 91 on your monday, and then we go to those upper 80s. still hot tuesday, wednesday, even your thursday. wednesday night into thursday, increase in the humidity here, with chances of storms through thursday. if we extend this forecast out, there's the dip.

friday at 81. saturday at 83. and then picking back up as we move into your next next week. we'll be right back.

control in the overbrook section of philadelphia. take a look, this is what the fire looked like just a few hours ago. flames shooting through the roof and blowing out the windows and the doors. the fire started around 9:00 this morning and it burned for about two hours. 120 firefighters worked on this. they were able to get that fire under control. they rescued one person inside who is okay. investigators are now trying to figure out the cause of that. krystal is back with us. >> it's still hot. we had the 90s like we were expecting and today we're forecasting 90s again outside. this will be the fourth day that we see those 90-degree temperatures. we drop below the 90s, but we are still hot in the upper 80s through thursday and humidity will be bumping up wednesday into thursday as well with that chance of storms moving in. >> i'll take the 80s as good news. after all those 90s. thanks for watching nbc 10 news
